Giuliani raps Clinton on Iraq, Iran

Republican Rudy Giuliani said Saturday that Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton has not stated clear goals for dealing with the Iraq war and Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

The former New York mayor also criticized Clinton’s health insurance proposal and her suggestion that every child born in the U.S. should get a $5,000 “baby bond” from the government to help pay for future costs of college or buying a home.

Based on Clinton’s answers in recent debates, Giuliani said during a town hall meeting that he cannot figure out her position on Iran.

The Money Quotes:

  • “We’re dealing with a level of ambiguity that I don’t believe is a good sign in a would-be commander in chief in a time of war,” said Giuliani, who has positioned himself as the one Republican able to thwart another Clinton presidency.
  • “If you listen to Democrats and some people in the press, the whole reason we’re in Iraq is to figure out how to withdraw,” he said. “That’s all they talk about. I don’t know if they realize how counterproductive that is. I don’t know if they realize how strategically irresponsible that is.”
  • “Americans solve problems, not the government,” he told the several hundred people who came out for his appearance in the Fort Myers area in southwest Florida.
  • “Government gets out of the way. It creates an atmosphere of safety and security. It creates an atmosphere of fairness. Other than that, it doesn’t try to plan your life for you. It doesn’t try to become nanny government,” he said.
  • “I think it’s seared in the minds of all Americans how important Florida is,” he said.

Rudy continues to attack Hillary Clinton and the Democrats (not other GOP Presidential candidates) in a state that he and the GOP MUST win in order to win the Presidency. He currently leads in the polls for the GOP nomination and in general election match-ups in Florida.

Update:

Rudy also slammed Hillary Clinton on her George McGovern-like Baby Bond:

He also slammed Clinton’s recent suggestion that every baby be given a $5,000 savings bond, saying the idea “comes from George McGovern,” the liberal 1972 Democratic presidential nominee who lost 49 states to Richard Nixon.

Giuliani said the “baby bond” idea would cost more than $20 billion a year for the bonds alone. Then, he said, “you’ve got to hire people to print the bonds — which I believe are going to include Hillary’s picture.”

Florida voters were high on the prospect of Giuliani electability over Hillary Clinton:

Giuliani is part of a crowded Republican primary field, but the focus on Clinton was shared by many who came to hear him Saturday.

“The main thing I like about him is I think he has the best chance of beating Hillary Clinton,” said Dottie Brown, who is active in Lee County Republican politics.

“We think he can beat Hillary,” said Susie Hilty, who along with her husband was visiting from Ohio.

“I think he’s got a lot of charisma and a lot of appeal, so I think he can bring in a lot of non-Republican voters,” said Thomas Pear, a college professor who lives in Fort Myers.

“I like his stance on terrorism. That’s the No. 1 issue I’m concerned about — Iran not getting a nuclear weapon,” said James Kerr of Fort Myers Beach. Kerr said he doesn’t think Clinton and other Democrats are strong enough on the issue.

Giuliani was making his 16th visit to Florida today. Republicans have campaigned vigorously in advance of the state’s Jan. 29 primary, while Democrats have stayed away because the early date violates party rules.

“You were critical in the 2000 election. You were real important in the 2004 election. This time, you’re going to be even more important because you’ve got a primary on Jan. 29,” Giuliani said. “And unlike the Democrats, I’m not going to boycott Florida.”
