Rudy Giuliani Watch: The Big State Strategy

Republican presidential hopeful, former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, answers a question during a town hall meeting, while campaigning in Mount Vernon, Mo., Monday, Nov. 12, 2007.

The Rudy Giuliani “Big State” campaign strategy is well known and has been articulated for months.

However, with Mitt Romney’s resurgence in the New Hampshire polls, Michael Duhaime, Giuliani Campaign Manager went to the media yesterday to rearticulate it.

In a nutshell Rudy is banking that Florida and other “big states” (including California, Illinois, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania) will give Giuliani the majority of delegates by mid-April 2008 – DESPITE election losses to Mitt Romney in “early states” of Iowa and New Hampshire.

There are a number of variables and especially questions:

1. Will Mitt Romney’s poll leads in Iowa and New Hampshire hold up?

2. How will a resurgent Mike Huckabee campaign in Iowa divide votes away from Romney in Iowa?

3. Will Fred Thompson be able to mount a campaign against Romney in Iowa and South Carolina and Giuliani in Florida?

4. How will John McCain who won New Hampshire in 2000 against President Bush hurt Rudy there?

5. Would Romney wins in Iowa and New Hampshire generate sufficient MOMENTUM to propel him to victories in states where he is presently polling in third or fourth place?

Campaigns are run on money resources and there are a finite number of them with multiple elections throughout January, February, March and April 2008. How each campaign marshalls them and applies a targeted media campaign in the states where they “might” win will determine the GOP nominee.

Watch where Rudy is campaigning in the next few weeks prior to the Christmas holidays and where he launches his first television commercials. This will give the viewer insight as to where the battleground for race 2008 is.

Stay tuned…….
