Presidential Primary Election Calendar Watch: New Hampshire Sets for January 8 and Michigan January 15

The Jan. 8 date will put the primary five days after Iowa’s Jan. 3 caucus. Iowa scheduled itself so early because other states, notably Michigan and Florida, decided to move their primaries earlier.

Michigan’s primary had been ruled unconstitutional earlier this month because of a portion of the law that allowed information from the publicly funded election to be used for private purposes. Wednesday’s ruling allowed it go forward, although Michigan clerks said earlier in the week that they would not be ready for a Jan. 15 primary.

So, here is the tentative breakdown for January and February 2008:

• Iowa: January 3rd
• Wyoming: January 5th
• New Hampshire: January 8th
• Michigan: January 15th
• Nevada & South Carolina: January 19th
• Florida: January 29th
• Maine: February 2nd
• Super Tuesday (AL, AK, AZ, AR, CA, CO, DE, CT, GA, IL, MN, MO, MT, NJ, NY, ND, OK, RI, TN, UT, WV): February 5th

Who are the winners and losers in this announcement?

WINNERS:

• Rudy Giuliani – adds Michigan and Nevada as “Firewalls” before Florida

• Mike Huckabee – Iowa momentum (he is now tied with Romney) could propel him in South Carolina.

• Ron Paul – more opportunities to spend campaign cash before Super Tuesday.

• Fred Thompson – Michigan is only 4 days before South Carolina “Firewall” where he is now tied with Romney.

LOSERS:

• Mitt Romney – early Iowa state momentum is diluted with more elections to contend.

The 2008 race for the Presidency is afoot……
