Mike Huckabee Targets Iowa Christians – Plays Mormon Card?

Mike Huckabee discusses what he believes in this new ad.

The Iowa television airwaves are heating up with the latest Mike Huckabee ad: “Believe”. This ad targets Iowa Christian GOP voters:

The ad, titled “Believe,” goes up today in the early nominating state. In it, Mr. Huckabee uses his speech at the October Values Voters Summit to spotlight his anti-abortion position and his strength as a Christian leader.

“I don’t have to wake up every day wondering, ‘What do I need to believe?’” he says.

Marc Ambinder suggests that Huckabee is PLAYING THE MORMON CARD:

Is Huckabee playing the Mormon card, even unwittingly? Hard to say. His campaign says absolutely not. And intent matters, of course. But this being a postmodern political world, so does reception: it depends on the extent to which the targets of his television ad are aware that Romney is Mormon and are prone to object to it.

Now, watch the ad again.

Is Ambinder RIGHT?

Dean Barnett over at the Weekly Standard thinks Huckabee is being “SLICK” with the Mormon issue.

What’s most disturbing about this spot is it hits the Mormon angle with the same kind of elusive slickness that John Edwards used to go after Dick Cheney’s daughter. The Huckabee campaign has the same kind of plausible deniability with this ad that Edwards had after his debate with Cheney.

Will Mitt Romney EVER address the MORMON ISSUE?

Perhaps, the Huckster should rename it, “Believe in My Pipedreams”

On 2/12/95 an article Ralph Z. Harlow from the Washington Times wrote under the caption “Conservatives Hold Fire On Abortion” the Huckster said this:
“In the spirit of federalism, the proposed GOP revision also would replace the abortion amendment with a statement saying the issue should be left up to the individual state legislatures to deal with as each sees fit. ‘That’s exactly what we have looked for, and if it’s left up to the states, more of them are going to put some restrictions on abortion,’ Arkansas Lt. Gov. Mike Huckabee said in an interview after appearing on a conference panel yesterday.”

On 4/ 2006 in an interview with John Hawkins on RightWing News the Huckster was talking the same talk: http://www.rightwingnews.com/interviews/huckabee.php

“It would please me because I think Roe v. Wade is based on a real stretch of Constitutional application — that somehow there is a greater privacy issue in the abortion concern — than there is a human life issue — and that the federal government should be making that decision as opposed to states making that decision. So, I’ve never felt that it was a legitimate manner in which to address this and, first of all, it should be left to the states, the 10th Amendment, but secondly, to somehow believe that the taking of an innocent, unborn human life is about privacy and not about that unborn life is ludicrous.”

    BUT then on 11/19/07;
Huckabee Rejects Letting States Decide Whether to Allow Abortions
    http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,312107,00.html

“If morality is the point here, and if it’s right or wrong, not just a political question, then you can’t have 50 different versions of what’s right and what’s wrong.”

“For those of us for whom this is a moral question, you can’t simply have 50 different versions of what’s right,”he said in an interview on Fox News Sunday.”

“But my surprise was nothing compared to the surprise of people across America who had been faithful supporters of right to life, said Huckabee, who is challenging Thompson’s claim that he is the most reliable conservative in the GOP field.

The Huckster is a con man but, not a conservative…are you the next victim??

He states the taking the life of the unborn is wrong. If you are taking the political view to the question, then it would be a states issue. But if you are talking a moral issue here, then it is federal. Let the Nation vote if it should be states or National. But,it’s wrong to kill unborn babies in all the states, every day of the year. It is just a fact. Wrong-Wrong-Wrong! Now if we are given a choice to vote about it, then the states should vote. But it is still wrong to kill unborn babies! Now if the states vote to make it legal in certain states then the people of that state have spoken. I think there should be strong laws as to how this would be handled! And it would be still be wrong. If we are talking about the risk of the mother’s life or some cases the condition of the fetus, then I think that has already been passed. But if we are talking about a new life, to end just because that life is in the way, not wanted, a opps, somebody made a mistake during a fit of passion, I’m sorry, but that is not right. Or wait until the child is 12 and ask it if it wants to die? Let the unborn decide if it should be here or not. And is this really word for word from Mike? I have my doubts! The Mike Huckabee I know and love has ALWAYS BEEN AGAINST ABORTION!!

Mike Huckabee has been consistently pro-life and Mitt Romney has NOT.

Mitt Romney ONLY changed to the pro-life position when he decided to run for President.

  • Ian from Ann Arbor

Courage is what Huckabee has! Abortion is murder. Last I knew, murder was against all state laws. Huckabee understands, also, that if single mothers, or young couples, are to have what they need to raise the child, we must not confiscate the fruits of their labor from their paychecks. And courage is what Huck has in audaciously advocating the end of theIRS.

But, my my, the wisdom of FairTax naysayers who, like Rich Lowry, Robt Novak, and Pat Toomey, contend that HR 25 amounts to a pipedream! Might I suggest that they take a look at the growth in the numbers of co-sponsors over the last eight years? Fact is, Mr. Huckabee has shown himself to be astute as to the ramifications of what FairTax means, not only to middle America, but to the United States’ trade and manufacturing position, globally. Further, because the income tax system affords politicians political cover to hide taxes in prices – by increasing costs to business, passed through to consumers, taxpayers will never be aware of the actual tax load they’re carrying. This, Laurence Kotlikoff contends, does not support adequate taxpayer pressure on congressional spending, but rather distracts taxpayers against each other (poor against rich), and individual against corporation.

Yes, both the FairTax and a national referendum on abortion, need to be sold to the public. Mike Huckabee is best-suited to do that job because, like Reagan, he has the ability to communicate to the people and accelerate progress on both fronts.

The problem is Huckabee has directly insulted my faith. He is capitalizing on that. He knows what he’s doing and so does everyone else. Just like Clinton and the drugs with Obama. I just can’t tolerate that kind of behavior. To be fair to Huckabee he was at a conference in Utah helping rally members of his faith to convince mormons to change religion. So him stating he doesn’t know much about mormonism is absurd. And to be fair mormons go on missions to convert others.

Huckabee is running for president. His responsibility is not only to christians but to all people in the U.S. He has intentionally discriminated against mormons. This causes me to believe he will discriminate against others, such as Catholics and other non-christian faiths. Believe me this will hurt him in his elections. I won’t vote for him and most of Utah and mormons won’t. Though I live in California. He’s putting down my faith to gain votes from other christians who have issues with mormons. I don’t think it’s wrong to have different opinions and differences in beliefs. And yes if you don’t feel comfortable electing a mormon then that is your decision. Though I must admit I think you’re naive, mormons have voted for several republican christians to become president. So obviously we share the core values as most “faith voters.”

But Huckabee is intentionally using another religion for his on gain to be elected president.

If Huckabee is the chosen republican then you will see Utah and many mormons nation wide vote for either an independent or if he wins the democratic seat “Obama.” And for the first time in many years Utah will come out as a Democrat vote instead of Republican. If you don’t believe me just wait and see. Glenn Beck has stated that if Huckabee is elected the presidency will go to the Democrats. I’m confident that’s exactly what will happen in that scenario. I believe that the key to being a president is respect for others personal beliefs as a President. If our president is not uniting us together then we are in big trouble as a nation.

Let me get this straight; Faced with the direct evidence of an obvious switch from Federalism to a pro-life amendment which he KNOWS will never, ever pass not only do you try to deny it while offering mindless twaddle inwhich you don’t have the first clue as to what you’re talking about…no more catnip for you ma’am.

    There are honest and intelligent people who the Huckster has fooled but, I’ll let them tell you all about it;

“I would like to extend an apology everybody who has been patiently warning me about supporting Mike Huckabee. Today on the Laura Ingram show, I heard in Huckabee what all of you have been saying all along.

    1. She asked about vouchers since the teachers union supported him. He evaded by saying that it was “A states rights issue”. (SUBVET Insertion) Really? What about all the non-state (federal) funding there Mike?

    2. She asked about him supporting the consulate passing out ID cards to illegals so they could establish themselves in the community. He evaded answering the question with jaw dropping political ease.

( Names withheld ) and others, you were right. This guy is a liberal who doesn’t like abortions. You know what? I don’t like abortions either but I sure as hell don’t like liberals.

Huckabee is now below McCain in my book. To dodge and evade direct questions is Clintonesque and perhaps that’s fitting due to where he’s from.

I am embarrassed and disgusted with myself for not seeing this when it shown to me in black and white.

If anybody from the Huckabee camp reads this, tell the Pastor he fooled a man for about 5 months so he should feel good about that. But also tell him that the same man he fooled is now going to work against him. I got a feeling I won’t be alone.”
