Caroline Kennedy responds during an interview, Friday, Dec. 26, 2008 in New York
If Caroline Kennedy was running in a contested Democrat Primary election in New York state for Hillary Clinton’s soon to be vacant U.S. Senate seat, she would be in deep trouble. But, she is not.
Even so……
The latest polling has has New York voters preferring New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo being appointed to the seat by 15 percentage points.
The tides of support have changed in the contest over who voters think should fill Hillary Clinton’s vacant U.S. Senate seat. 40% of registered voters in New York State say Governor David Paterson should appoint New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to the position while 25% believe Caroline Kennedy should assume the role. That’s a marked difference for Cuomo from just one month ago when the Marist Poll showed him and Kennedy in a tie with each receiving 25% of New Yorkers’ support. Kennedy’s backing remains at a standstill.
Cuomo’s allies span party lines. 39% of New York Democrats say Cuomo is the right person to succeed Clinton while 31% report that Kennedy should replace her. GOP members in New York are pulling for Cuomo 40% to Kennedy’s 16%. Non-enrolled voters follow suit. Cuomo receives the support of 42% of New Yorkers who are not enrolled in a political party while 24% favor Kennedy. Geography doesn’t play a big role either. Cuomo is the favorite across the state. However, the margin is tightest in New York City where Cuomo has the backing of 36% of voters compared with Kennedy’s 31%.
Cuomo and Kennedy aren’t the only contenders in the running to succeed Clinton. Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi places a distant third with 6% of New Yorkers saying he’s the right fit for the job. Long Island Congressman Steve Israel and New York City Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney are close at his heels. Each receives 5% of voters’ support. 3% of New Yorkers think Hudson Valley Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand should be picked.
New York Governor David Paterson will soon make his selection of Hillary’s replacement. In light of today’s poll and yesterday’s, Caroline Kennedy may be a risky choice for the Democrat Governor.

Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, seen here in August 25, 2008, addresses the Democratic National Convention. Voters in New York state are not excited by the idea of Caroline Kennedy entering the Senate, but believe she will be picked anyway, a poll released Wednesday shows
In the latest Quinnipiac Poll, Caroline Kennedy has cooled with New York State voters and now more voters prefer New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.
The poll:
- N.Y Attorney General Andrew Cuomo – 31%
- Caroline Kennedy – 24%
- U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney – 6%
- U.S. Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand – 5%
- U.S. Rep. Steve Israel – 2%
- Somebody else – 18%
- Undecided – 14%
From January 8 – 12, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,664 New York State registered voters, with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percentage points.
However, New York voters continue to say that Governor David Patterson WILL appoint Kennedy 38-33%.
Cuomo leads Kennedy 31 – 20 percent among upstate voters and 36 – 22 percent in the suburbs, while Kennedy gets 31 percent of New York City voters to Cuomo’s 29 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. Men back Cuomo 32 – 23 percent while women back him 31 – 25 percent.
New York State voters say 48 – 37 percent that Kennedy is not qualified to be a U.S. Senator and 40 – 37 percent that she would not be a good Senator. Democrats say 47 – 35 percent that she is qualified, while Republicans say 65 – 24 percent that she is not qualified. Independent voters say 51 – 34 percent that she is not qualified.
The bloom is definitely off the Caroline Kennedy rose by her disasterous early campaigning in upsate New York. She tried to strong arm the Governor and still MAY succeed to the benefit of the New York GOP.
Want to wager that Sarah Palin hopes Kennedy is chosen?
Stay tuned….

New York Gov. David A. Paterson and First Lady Michelle Paterson toast each other prior to receiving visitors during the annual open house at the Executive Mansion in Albany, N.Y, January 1, 2009.
The language from Paterson does not heart Caroline Kennedy but a number of other candidates are receiving serious consideration.
Now that the date has been set for Hillary Clinton’s secretary of state confirmation hearing (next Tuesday), the pressure is on for Gov. David Paterson to finally make a decision on who he will tap to replace her in the US Senate.
But since he’s not even done vetting candidates yet, it’s unlikely his choice will come anytime soon.
Speaking today on WOR-AM’s “The Joan Hamburg Show,” Paterson addressed the argument being made in favor of Caroline Kennedy by people like Deputy Mayor Kevin Sheekey, who say her relationship to President-elect Obama is the ultimate trump card.
“Caroline Kennedy obviously does have a tremendous relationship with the president and that’s certainly a plus,” Paterson said. “She does not have much political, I mean legislative, experience which is a minus…She has pluses and minuses.â€
Flap bets Paterson backs away from Caroline Kennedy and appoints New York Democrat Attorney General Andrew Cuomo which then clears the field for a Paterson re-election effort for Governor in 2010.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, center, stands beside Caroline Kennedy as they field questions during a news conference outside the famed soul food restaurant Sylvia’s in Harlem, New York, Thursday Dec. 18, 2008. The late President John F. Kennedy’s daughter acknowledged Wednesday that she is seeking to be appointed to the Senate seat held by Hillary Rodham Clinton, who has been nominated by President-elect Barack Obama to be secretary of state
Caroline’s popularity with New York voters has been in a nosedive in the polls but it may all be moot for a number of reasons.
Caroline Kennedy‘s popularity has suffered a “clear hit” as a result of her public campaign for Hillary Rodham Clinton‘s Senate seat, while Attorney General Andrew Cuomo’s positive ratings have shot up, according to a new poll.
According to Public Policy Polling, of Raleigh, N.C., 44 percent of New York State voters now say they have a less favorable opinion of Kennedy than they did before she started vying for the position. Thirty-three percent say it’s made no difference, and 23 percent report now having a more favorable opinion of her.
Cuomo now leads Kennedy 58-27 in a survey of the preferences of state voters. Among Democrats, Cuomo is ahead of Kennedy 54-34 percent; a month ago, the survey found Kennedy ahead of Cuomo by 44-23 percent among Democrats.
- Will Caroline Kennedy, despite her wealth for a self-funded campaign, be of sufficent stature to defeat former New York Governor George Pataki or Rudy Giuliani, both Republicans?
- Will New York Governor David Paterson defuse a possible Democrat Primary election for himself by appointing New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to the Senate?
- And, it ALL may be MOOT should Hillary Clinton run into confrirmation problems on the Hill.
Stay tuned……

Day By Day by Chris Muir
As Barack Obama spiritual advisor Jeremiah Wright said, “The chickens are coming home to roost.”
First, it was Hot Rod Blagojevich and his corrupt appointment of Roland Burris to Obama’s U.S. Senate seat along with the interference by Democrat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.
Second, the NEPOTISM of a possible Caroline Kennedy appointment to Hillary Clinton’s U.S. Senate Seat.
Third, the apparent win of Al Franken, who is an incompetent a pol as Jesse Ventura and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
And, now, there is the withdrawal of New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson from his Obama appointment to become Secretary of Commerce because of corruption charges.
But, what do you expect from a MSM who did not properly VETT the Democrat Party or Obama during the last election cycle.
Chickens coming home to roost, indeed.
