Reuters: Kerry makes direct apology to troops
Democratic Sen. John Kerry apologized directly to U.S. troops on Wednesday for comments about Iraq that had prompted a firestorm of criticism from Republicans and President George W. Bush.
“I sincerely regret that my words were misinterpreted to wrongly imply anything negative about those in uniform and I personally apologize to any service member, family member or American who was offended,” Kerry said in a statement.
Kerry said earlier in the day he was sorry for a “botched joke” about Bush that was interpreted as a slam on the U.S. military. Republicans demanded a more direct apology and seized on Kerry’s comments to students as a sign of Democratic weakness on national security.
About damn time…….
The statement is here:
As a combat veteran, I want to make it clear to anyone in uniform and to their loved ones: my poorly stated joke at a rally was not about, and never intended to refer to any troop.
I sincerely regret that my words were misinterpreted to wrongly imply anything negative about those in uniform, and I personally apologize to any service member, family member, or American who was offended.
It is clear the Republican Party would rather talk about anything but their failed security policy. I don’t want my verbal slip to be a diversion from the real issues. I will continue to fight for a change of course to provide real security for our country, and a winning strategy for our troops.
Allah’s got the story:
The White House statement:
Sen Kerry’s apology to the troops for his insulting comments came late, but it was the right thing to do. Our military is the best and the brightest, the most courageous and professional or an military in the world and the President is honored to be their Commander-in-Chief
Was this really an apology?
Not really……more of - “well the DNC made me do it and it is right before an election - so……”
Others not accepting this statement as an apology:
Mark Steyn
Mark Levin
Mitt Romney

US Senator John Kerry (R) and Democratic congressional candidate Patrick Murphy (L) address supporters at a Vote For Change rally in October 2006 in Newtown, Pa. Kerry said he is pulling back from campaigning ahead of next week’s midterm elections to avoid the continued distraction created by his remarks that Americans who neglect their education would “get stuck in Iraq.”
Reuters: Kerry apologizes for “botched” Iraq joke
Democratic Sen. John Kerry said on Wednesday he was sorry about a “botched joke” that drew election-year fire from President George W. Bush and other Republicans who accused him of insulting U.S. troops in Iraq.
Kerry reiterated the target of his joke was Bush, who immediately seized on the senator’s remarks to rally Republican supporters ahead of Tuesday’s elections, in which the party’s control of Congress is at risk.
Kerry said he was returning to Washington from a trip campaigning on behalf of Democratic congressional candidates because he did not want to be “a distraction.”
A “BOTCHED JOKE” my ass.
The Quote:
“You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.”

Kerry responds
Sounds like a whole lot of spinning going on at the DNC.
And a distraction?
How about Murtha or Hillary disavowing what Kerry said? Or do THEY think this is a VAST RIGHT WING CONSPIRACY and merely a “BOTCHED JOKE?”
Inquiring minds want to know?

Some Dems Join GOP Seeking Kerry Apology
A few Democratic candidates joined Republicans Wednesday in pressing John Kerry to apologize for a comment critics said appeared disrespectful of U.S. troops as several Kerry campaign appearances were canceled.
“Whatever the intent, Senator Kerry was wrong to say what he said,” said Democratic Rep. Harold Ford Jr., running for Senate in Tennessee.
“Sen. Kerry’s remarks were poorly worded and just plain stupid,” said Montana Senate President Jon Tester, a Democrat trying to unseat GOP Sen. Conrad Burns. “He owes our troops and their families an apology.”
“I’m sorry he did what he did. But I think the issue … we want to make sure it doesn’t confuse the subject of the war in Iraq,” Democratic Rep. Ben Cardin, running for Senate in Maryland, said on CNN.
UPDATE:
And even Hillary NOW says Kerry needs to apologize. Murtha?
Sen. Hillary Clinton, speaking at a Kingston campaign stop this morning, joined the chorus of Democrats criticizing Sen. John Kerry for what the former presidential candidate has called a joke gone awry.
“What Sen. Kerry said was inappropriate,” she said.
Asked if Kerry should apologize, President Bush and other members of both parties have said, Clinton said “I heard he said he was sorry.”
Clinton tried to deflect attention from the controversy by saying “elections are about the future,” and “we don’t have to be re-fighting the 2004 election, as much as President Bush would like that.”
Stay tuned…….

Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, left, speaks in support of gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides, who is joined by U.S. Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., at a rally held at Pasadena City College in Pasadena, Calif., Monday, Oct. 30, 2006.
Hot Air: John Kerry on America’s lazy, uneducated military
The Quote:
“You know, education, if you make the most of it, if you study hard and you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, uh, you, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.”

All Flap can say is MORON.
Now, Senator John McCain is calling on Kerry to apologize.
Senator Kerry owes an apology to the many thousands of Americans serving in Iraq, who answered their country’s call because they are patriots and not because of any deficiencies in their education. Americans from all backgrounds, well off and less fortunate, with high school diplomas and graduate degrees, take seriously their duty to our country, and risk their lives today to defend the rest of us in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere.
They all deserve our respect and deepest gratitude for their service. The suggestion that only the least educated Americans would agree to serve in the military and fight in Iraq, is an insult to every soldier serving in combat, and should deeply offend any American with an ounce of appreciation for what they suffer and risk so that the rest of us can sleep more comfortably at night. Without them, we wouldn’t live in a country where people securely possess all their God-given rights, including the right to express insensitive, ill-considered and uninformed remarks.
And Kerry should apologize……..
Update:
The White House Slams Kerry:
The White House accused Sen. John Kerry on Tuesday of troop-bashing, seizing on a comment the Democrat made to California students that those unable to navigate the country’s education system “get stuck in Iraq.”
“Senator Kerry not only owes an apology to those who are serving, but also to the families of those who’ve given their lives in this,” White House press secretary Tony Snow said. “This is an absolute insult.”
Update #2:
Senator Kerry’s response:
Kerry, who is considering another run for the White House in 2008, angrily fired back.
His statement called Republicans “assorted right-wing nut jobs.”
And at a hastily arranged news conference in Seattle, Kerry said: “I apologize to no one for my criticism of the president and of his broken policy.”
Kerry said the comment in question was “a botched joke about the president and the president’s people, not about the troops … and they know that’s what I was talking about.”
Update #3
American Legion to Sen. Kerry: Apologize Now
The National Commander of The American Legion called on Sen. John Kerry to apologize for suggesting that American troops in Iraq are uneducated.
“As a constituent of Senator Kerry’s I am disappointed. As leader of The American Legion, I am outraged,” said National Commander Paul A. Morin. “A generation ago, Sen. Kerry slandered his comrades in Vietnam by saying that they were rapists and murderers. It wasn’t true then and his warped view of today’s heroes isn’t true now.”
Update #4
AMVETS Calls on Senator to Apologize to Troops
AMVETS’ National Commander expressed disbelief and disappointment in the comments by Senator John Kerry Monday.
“For the Senator to suggest that today’s United States military is made up of uneducated men and women who didn’t ‘study hard’ or ‘make an effort to be smart’ is ridiculous and appalling,” AMVETS National Commander Thomas C. McGriff said Tuesday. “The men and women in uniform today make up the most advanced, highly-educated force ever seen. To suggest otherwise is a slap in the face to every soldier, sailor, airman, Marine and Coast Guardsman who has spent countless hours working to better him or herself. This is also an insult to every person and organization who has worked tirelessly to provide our troops and their families with education benefits.
“Senator Kerry should retract his remarks and apologize immediately,” McGriff said after listening to comments made by Senator Kerry at a political rally in Pasadena, Calif., Monday. “It is especially outrageous coming from a member of the U.S. Senate.”

The Australian: Sheik al-Hilaly ‘will be voted out’
TAJ al-Din al-Hilaly is set to be stripped of his title of mufti on the grounds that Australia’s 300,000 Muslims do not need a national leader.
The Australian: Sheik al-Hilaly ‘will be voted out’
The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, which appoints the mufti, will vote to abolish the position at coming elections.
AFIC spokesman Haset Sali said yesterday that the new executive board, expected to be elected in February, would work to remove the position of mufti from the council’s constitution because it was not relevant to Australian society.
Mr Sali said Australia did not need a mufti, nor was there anyone qualified to fit that post.
“I don’t believe Australia needs a mufti,” Mr Sali told The Australian.
“It needs a mufti like a hole in the head.
“And I just don’t think that there is someone who would be not only an eminent scholar but also capable of communicating in a constructive and positive way with the English-speaking community in Australia.”
In other words spin, finesse and lie about the Islamic teaching to the infidel Dhimmis of Australia. What a joke.
But, the Shiek apologized? Damn it seems the Muslims are learning from Democrat politicians in the United States.

The Australian: Sheik apologises to ‘cherished pearls’
While he expressed some contrition to the women of Australia, he attacked the “dubious media” and “devious groups” which he says have slandered and defamed him.
Australia’s most senior Muslim cleric collapsed with chest pains and was taken to hospital today following widespread calls for him to quit after delivering a sermon in which he compared immodestly dressed women to uncovered meat eaten by cats.
In a written statement given to the media at Canterbury Hospital in Sydney today, he admitted the metaphor was inappropriate for western society.
But he said the comments were made in a private lesson at Lakemba mosque during Ramadan and were not meant for the general public “and particularly not the general women of our Australian society”.
It was inappropriate for the general public and women of Australian society because they are “infidels” and Dhimmis anyway. Note how the Senior Muslim cleric of Australia really did not say what he said about “UNCOVERED MEAT” was MORALLY WRONG or not the teachings of Muhammed.
Maybe the Sheik is stepping down because he fancies the politically incorrect football team?

We all know why the Sheik MUST go. He was exposed teaching that which is taught throughout the Islamic World - the subjugation of women.
Oh Horrors!
Any comments from the feminists or Islamophilic Dhimmis?
Stay tuned………

Alberto Fernandez
Washington Post: Fernandez Apologizes for Al-Jazeera Remarks
The State Department official in charge of public diplomacy for the Middle East apologized Sunday for telling the Arabic language Al-Jazeera television station that the U.S. had displayed “arrogance and stupidity” in Iraq.
Alberto Fernandez, director of public diplomacy in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the State Department, made the remarks in an interview that aired Saturday on the Qatar-based channel, which is carried by satellite and is closely watched in the Arab world.
The QUOTE:
“We tried to do our best,” he said during the interview, which aired late Saturday. “But I think there is much room for criticism because, undoubtedly, there was arrogance and there was stupidity from the United States in Iraq.”
Now, Fernandez has apologized. A HIT AND RUN attack?
The State Department should review this character’s work and determine if he is best serving the United States. IF Mr. Fernandez has policy differences with the United States State Department under President Bush then he should resign his position.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice needs to bring Fernandez in for a WOODSHED TALK.
Flap continues to await a return call to interview Mr. Fernandez.

Moayad Ahmed, a policeman, is comforted by his mother in Baqouba hospital, 60 kilometers (35 miles) northeast of Baghdad, Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006. Ahmed was attacked by unknown gunmen while off duty in the town of Khan Bani Saad, just outside Baqouba, Saturday.
AP: Envoy: U.S. showed ’stupidity’ in Iraq
A senior U.S. diplomat said the United States had shown “arrogance” and “stupidity” in Iraq but was now ready to talk with any group except Al-Qaida in Iraq to facilitate national reconciliation.
In an interview with Al-Jazeera television aired late Saturday, Alberto Fernandez, director of public diplomacy in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the State Department offered an unusually candid assessment of America’s war in Iraq.
“We tried to do our best but I think there is much room for criticism because, undoubtedly, there was arrogance and there was stupidity from the United States in Iraq,” he said.
“We are open to dialogue because we all know that, at the end of the day, the solution to the hell and the killings in Iraq is linked to an effective Iraqi national reconciliation,” he said, speaking in Arabic from Washington. “The Iraqi government is convinced of this.”
What the hell?
Alberto Fernandez does he speak for the President or the American people? Since when does a career foreign policy officer speak to an enemies’ propaganda organ and criticize the United States. If Mr. Fernandez does not agree with American policy, he is free to resign and perhaps he should.
Maybe he can run for office? And, of course, write a book.
Mr. Fernandez’s biography is here.
A profile from MSNBC is here.
His telephone number at the State Department is 202-647-4199. Give his office a call and tell him what you think of his comments. Flap has, and will interview him if and when he calls me back. Flap will publish what he says.
Flap’s best guess is that Mr. Fernandez will be transferred as of Monday morning. Before then Mr. Fernandez should explain to the mother in the photo above why her son was wounded supporting a democratically elected government in Iraq.
Update:
Michelle Malkin has al Jazeera’s pet State Department mouthpiece
If this is “the face of the United States in the Middle East,” we need to withdraw all State Department bureaucrats from the region, find out what else Fernandez and his Arabic-speaking colleagues have been telling the Arab media, and boot them off the airwaves. Permanently. If showing “politeness” towards suicide bomb-embracing jihadi clerics and showing contempt for our country on enemy airwaves is how we plan to win “hearts and minds,” we’re screwed.
As of Sunday morning, Flap has NOT had a return call from Mr. Fernandez for an interview.
Update #2:
Apparently, Mr. Fernandez is saying he has been misquoted.
The State Department — which has long been at odds with the Pentagon over Iraq according to several recent books — had said earlier that a translation of the comments posted on Al Jazeera’s English language Web site had misquoted its director of public diplomacy in the bureau of Near Eastern affairs.
“What he (Fernandez) says is that it is not an accurate quote,” State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said. Asked whether he thought the United States would be judged as being arrogant, McCormack said “No.”
Al Jazeera’s English language Web Site also quoted Fernandez as saying Washington was ready to talk with any Iraqi group except al Qaeda in Iraq to end violence.
How about a transcript of his remarks in English?
And, Mr. Fernandez how about an interview? Hugh Hewitt has told Flap that he would welcome you on his radio show tomorrow, Monday.
Stay tuned……..

North Korea’s top leader Kim Jong Il, right, shakes hands with Chinese special envoy Tang Jiaxuan during their meeting in Pyongyang, capital of North Korea, in this July 13, 2005, file photo. A Chinese envoy met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Il and delivered a message from Chinese President Hu Jintao, the Chinese foreign ministry said on Thursday October 19, 2006. Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said he had no details of the message conveyed by State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan, who flew to Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, on Wednesday.
AP: Report: N. Korean Leader Regrets Test
North Korean leader Kim Jong Il expressed regret about his country’s nuclear test to a Chinese delegation and said Pyongyang would return to international nuclear talks if Washington backs off a campaign to financially isolate the country, a South Korean newspaper reported Friday.
“If the U.S. makes a concession to some degree, we will also make a concession to some degree, whether it be bilateral talks or six-party talks,” Kim was quoted as telling a Chinese envoy, the mass- circulation Chosun Ilbo reported, citing a diplomatic source in China.
Kim told the Chinese delegation that “he is sorry about the nuclear test,” the newspaper reported.
Kim Jong-Il without a doubt is a MORON.
North Korea has agreed to United Nations Security Council Resolutions to end their nuclear program. They should do so now prior to any suspension of UNSC sanctions.
Also, Flap asks: How much of Kim’s change of heart will cost the American taxpayer?
It sounds to Flap that someone either China or North Korea or both were bought off.
