GOP Debate Watch : Who Won Tonight’s New Hampshire Debate?
Republican presidential candidates former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) pose for photographers before their debate at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, New Hampshire September 5, 2007.
Winners:
John McCain reasserted himself in tonight’s debate as an experienced politician. Remember McCain beat George W Bush in New Hampshire in 2000.
Rudy held his own (despite Fox’s Frank Lunz’s New Hampshire focus groups) made NO errors and looked Presidential. He remains the national frontrunner. There is NO DOUBT that Rudy has the executive leadership that will keep America SAFE.
Mike Huckabee schooled Ron Paul on the Iraq War and American resolve.
Losers:
Mitt Romney looked befuddled and indecisive. The question about his sons not serving in the military was devastating. Flap will be surprised if the race doesn’t tighten and Romney loses his lead.
Fred Thompson for not being present.
This should be the last debate for the remaining candidates unless they poll more than 5% in any national poll.
What are others saying?
Marc Ambiner – The Atlantic: “My gut instinct: Mike Huckabee and Rudy Giuliani won. John McCain did very well, too.”
National Review’s Kate O’Beirne: “[G]iuliani scored a hit … by raising importance of executive experience.
National Review’s Rich Lowry: “[Giuliani] is so good in these debates.â€

South Carolina GOP Debate Watch: The Second Debate
Former Mayor of New York city Rudy Giuliani waves as he arrives at the Koger Center to perform checks where the Republican Debate will be held in Columbia, South Carolina May 15, 2007.
Flap will write comments about the canddiates as the debate happens live.
The candidates take the stage.
The War in Iraq is the first topic and first question to McCain. McCain looks wooden and uneasy.
Next, Tommy Thompson. Malaki Iraq government must stand up.
Mitt Romney – any circumstance to pull out from Iraq? Answer rambles about Islamic radicals and talking points.
Brownback – his stand favoring Iraq Study Group and reaching consensus.
Format is much easier to follow………
Rudy – Congressional GOP must find success by September. Timetable for defeat? Corrects quote and says he was referring to Democrats. Agrees with McCain and calls him correct. Fort Dix example. Facing an enemy who wants to kill us and the worst thing to do is to show them weakness.
Tom Tancredo – supports troops as his role as Congressman
Ron Paul – in the wrong party?
Duncan Hunter – Chairman of Armed Services Committee, served in Vietanm, calls on other canddiates to lay out their credentials to be commander in chief.
Huckabee – need to listen to Generals
Gilmore – switch to question about Iran
Would you launch a pre-emptive strike against Iran to prevent them to achieve a nuclear weapon? Dialoge with American people when in fact we need to strike.
Second round of questions – domestic issues and economy
Mitt Romney – Flip Flop Mitt – Now take no tax pledge whereas before he would not. Says Washington is broken.
McCain – President Bush tax cuts. Opposed tax cuts. Spending is out of control. Did not lose 2006 on Iraq but on spending. Drunken sailor analogy.
Huckabee – alternative minimum tax. Eliminate tax? We have spent more money than John Edwards at a beauty shop. Much applause and laughter.
Rudy – killing line item veto. NYC spending rose. Spending actually decreased. Lowered taxes 23 times. PLedge to not fill 50% of retiring government employees. Also supports Regan-like across the board budget cuts – 5-25%. Quoted Club for Growth.
Chris Wallace opened up Rudy McRomney and questions Gilmore on why he thinks that some of the other candidates are not conservatives.
A round of questions on abortion and stem cell research
Fourth Round of questions on illegal immigration

GOP Presidential Debate Watch: Let’s Get Ready to Rumble
Chuck Todd and Mark Murray over at MSNBC have a good set of links for a pre-debate read:
The AP previews tonight’s debate: “Giuliani, McCain and Romney all kept their public campaign schedules relatively light over the past few days, opting to spend as much time as possible huddling with aides to rehearse their responses to expected questions on top issues such as Iraq, immigration, taxes, abortion, gay marriage and terrorism.†More: “The Reagan library [is] a fitting setting. Most, if not all, of the Republican candidates have embraced Reagan’s legacy and called for their party to return to the small-government, low-tax, strong-military ideals he espoused.â€
But the New York Times wonders if the contenders will want to embrace another Republican: George W. Bush. “Do they embrace him as a means of appealing to the conservative voters who tend to decide Republican primaries? Or do they break from him in an effort to show that they will lead the nation in a new direction? Do they applaud his policies or question his competence – or both?â€
The New York Times also focuses on Giuliani, who hasn’t debated since 1997, when he faced off against mayoral challenger Ruth Messinger. It asks which Rudy will show up: “The hard-hitting prosecutor? Or Mr. Nice Guy? Mr. Giuliani has played both in his short debate history.â€
Flap has his own links:
