Grover Norquist of the Americans for Tax Reform

New York Times: Christian Right Labors to Find ’08 Candidate

A group of influential Christian conservatives and their allies emerged from a private meeting at a Florida resort this month dissatisfied with the Republican presidential field and uncertain where to turn.

The event was a meeting of the Council for National Policy, a secretive club whose few hundred members include Dr. James C. Dobson of Focus on the Family, the Rev. Jerry Falwell of Liberty University and Grover Norquist of Americans for Tax Reform. Although little known outside the conservative movement, the council has become a pivotal stop for Republican presidential primary hopefuls, including George W. Bush on the eve of his 1999 primary campaign.

When Rudy Giuliani wraps up the GOP nomination, the KINGMAKERS of the Evangelical Christian Right MIGHT turn to a third party candidate.

The only question is how marginalized and irrelevant will they become. No GOP Senator, Governor or Congressman will foresake their political career to become a GOP spoiler in ‘08.

Flap’s bet is that these folks will splinter and divide. Some will covertly support Giuliani and some will support the third party candidate.

Will it matter in the Electoral College of Rudy vs. Hillary?

Probably only in the Red States that are already going GOP against Hillary.

But, guess what? In those states it is winner take all and the electoral votes will go to Rudy in any case.

But, if Rudy were to choose former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee as Vice President, they might find an excuse to support/vote for the “Redemptive SINNER.”

James Dobson of Focus on the Family on John McCain: “I pray that we don’t get stuck with him”

So, what will Norquist, Weyrich, Dobson, Falwell, Robertson’s role be in the presidential campaign of 2008?

To drive East and West Coast center-left independent voters to the GOP, of course……

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., talks to journalists outside the CBS studio in Washington after being interviewed on ‘Face the Nation’ Sunday, Washington Sunday, Jan. 14, 2007.

AP: McCain to make amends with Dobson

Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record) said Tuesday he hopes to patch things up with conservative Christian leader James Dobson, who recently said he wouldn’t support the Republican’s presidential bid under any circumstances.

In a radio interview with KCBI, a Dallas Christian station, Dobson argued that McCain didn’t support traditional marriage values and complained that the campaign finance legislation he co-authored hurt Christian broadcasters.

“Speaking as a private individual, I would not vote for John McCain under any circumstances,” Dobson said on KCBI.

The 2002 McCain-Feingold campaign finance legislation stifled “Christian radio” and “kept us from telling the truth right before elections,” Dobson contended. “He is not in favor of traditional marriage and I pray that we will not get stuck with him.”

Flap supposes McCain calling Jerry Falwell and other Evangelical Christians AGENTS OF INTOLERANCE during his 2000 campaign against President Bush may have had somethng to do with the snub.

You think?

James Dobson of Focus on the Family on John McCain: “I pray that we don’t get stuck with him”

WorldNet: Christian leader rejects McCain

Dobson says he couldn’t support senator ‘under any circumstances’

A prominent Christian leader whose radio and magazine outreaches are solidly in support of biblically-based marriages – and keep in touch with millions of constituents daily – says he cannot consider Arizona Sen. John McCain a viable candidate for president.

“Speaking as a private individual, I would not vote for John McCain under any circumstances,” said James Dobson, founder of the Colorado Springs-based Focus on the Family as well as the Focus Action cultural action organization set up specifically to provide a platform for informing and rallying constituents.

Dobson, who always is careful to note that he’s not speaking for the non-profit ministry, which cannot advocate for or against candidates legally, also doesn’t hesitate to state his personal opinions on social or political issues and agendas.

Several times he’s talked to Republicans, the traditionally conservative political party, about the need to maintain the values of that large part of the U.S. population, or lose the support of those people.

His most recent comments came during an interview on the Jerry Johnson Live program on KCBI 90.0 FM.

The audio is here.

So, who will Dobson and the Focus on the Family folks support of the “BIG THREE” of Giuliani, McCain and Romney?

This statement has to be a BOOM for Romney and a devastating blow to McCain.

However, Romney has Flip-Flopped on abortion and Gay Marriage. And Romney is a MORMON - hardly compatible with Evangelical Christians.

So?

Are Dobson’s litmus tests for support dooming him and his Evangelical Christian followers to irrelevance in 2008 Presidential primaries?

Possible

Stay tuned……..
