California GOP Assemblyman Chuck DeVore’s Solution to California Budget Woes: Drill Baby Drill

California GOP Assemblyman Chuck DeVore speaking on the floor of the California Assembly, February 14, 2009

Today, California GOP Assemblyman and U.S. Senate candidate Chuck DeVore addressed a group of energy lawyers in San Francisco. His prescription for increasing California tax revenues: Drill Baby Drill.

Besides slicing and dicing Boxer during a red-meat speech to the California Republican Party convention last weekend, the state senator from Irvine let it be known that he will push a plan to get dollars flowing into California’s coffers without soaking average state taxpayers.

    His plan: Drill, baby, drill.

DeVore says there are 9 billion barrels of oil waiting to be had beneath California’s coastal waters. He calls for an aggressive off-shore oil exploitation program, using slant drilling technology. He says tax revenues produced by increased oil operations may well grease the way to balanced state budgets.

“Those are state waters,” he says. “That’s our oil.”

This solution is almost too simple. But, the “Save the Whale” types in Santa Barbara and Monterey will continue to block drilling – even the slant drilling type because they fear oil spill and the despoiling of animal habitats.

Now, new technology may alleviate the concerns for any oil spill mishaps but it will be a hard sell to these environmental zealots.

Barack Obama Watch: Inflate Your Tires or Drill?

Barack Obama’s answer to meeting energy demands

Remember when Barack Obama downplayed the idea of domestic offshore oil production and recommended Americans simply “inflate your tires” or have regular car tuneups?

Remember how he was ridiculed by John McCain, Rush Limbaugh and the GOP?

Motorists could save more than 1 billion gallons of fuel a year, right now. But expanded offshore drilling would eventually produce even more.

But we also figure that expanded offshore drilling is projected to produce far more oil eventually than can be saved by proper tire inflation – nearly three times as much even by the conservative estimate of government experts, and more than 10 times as much if an industry-endorsed estimate is correct. And even taking into account additional fuel savings from tune-ups, which Obama also mentioned, he greatly exaggerated.

Americans want (as demonstrated in the polls) more domestic oil production. It is a national security issue.

Barack Obama’s energy solutions are naive and simplistic.

There is little doubt that America will need to increase domestic oil discovery and production if America wishes to maintain its quality of life. The facts are facts.

Debunking “Snake Oil” and Offshore Oil Drilling

    elixir-ad

The “Snake Oil” Ad from the NRDC

The Washington Post debunks the ad running in their own newspaper. Jim Geraghty over at National Review has a summary.

    The “DEBUNKED” points:

    • Drilling is pointless because the United States has only 3 percent of the world’s oil reserves
    • The oil companies aren’t using the leases they already have
    • Drilling is environmentally dangerous

There is little doubt that Americans WILL support MORE domestic oil and gas production if they want to preserve their lifestyle of today’s big vehicles either commuting, tourism or towing their boats to the oceans, rivers and lakes. Truck transport will continue to require fuel for the business community.

The increasing economies of China and India will bid up the price of offshore derived oil.

So, what does the United States do?

Americans WILL support environmentally friendly domestic oil, shale oil and natural gas production while the market develops alternative and renewable fuels. The waiting game and stall of the radical environmental movement has been exposed and is not credible. Beating up on President Bush with a caricature may make the radical Lefties feel good about themselves and their BDS, but is irrelevant.

It is time to move forward with a comprehensive energy plan that maintains the American economy and our quality of life.

Barack Obama Watch: Flipping on Offshore Oil Drilling

Barack Obama ridicules offshore oil drilling to solve America’s energy problems

Barack Obama’s former Pastor Jeremiah Wright:

“He’s a politician, I’m a pastor. We speak to two different audiences. And he says what he has to say as a politician. I say what I have to say as a pastor. Those are two different worlds. I do what I do. He does what politicians do. So that what happened in Philadelphia where he had to respond to the sound bytes, he responded as a politician””He’s a politician, I am a pastor. We speak to two different audiences. And he says what he has to say as a politician….”

Well, Jeremiah Wright certainly had that correct because less than a week after the Springfield, Missouri speech where he called offshore oil drilling a scheme Obama is now embracing it.

U.S. Sen. Barack Obama said today he would be willing to open Florida’s coast for more oil drilling if it meant winning approval for broad energy changes.

“My interest is in making sure we’ve got the kind of comprehensive energy policy that can bring down gas prices,” Obama said in an interview with The Palm Beach Post.

“If, in order to get that passed, we have to compromise in terms of a careful, well thought-out drilling strategy that was carefully circumscribed to avoid significant environmental damage – I don’t want to be so rigid that we can’t get something done,” Obama said.

Flap supposes Barack Obama reads polls and the latest ones, including the latest Florida poll, say that American voters DO support some offshore oil drilling.

But, this was NOT Barack Obama’s position less than a week ago. Flap realizes people can change their mind. But, sheesh…..

With a politician like Obama who has a thin resume, lacks extensive government experience and voting record, Americans will ask:

    • What are Obama’s “TRUE” positions on the issues?
    • On what other issues will or might Obama flip-flop?
    • “Can we trust a FLIPPER Obama with the Presidency?”

Barack Obama flipped on Iran being a threat to the United States and negotiating with Iran’s President Ahmadinejad without any pre-conditions. Now, it is offshore oil drilling.

    What will come next?

The Iraq War and the Surge?

The Obama Energy Policy of the Future

    ramireztoon062508

Michael Ramirez with apologies to Jed and his kin

If American voters think today’s oil and energy policies are grand with soaring prices and the dependence on countries who do not like the United States, then they will love the “NEW” policies of a President Obama.

The Democrats have blocked meaningful domestic oil exploration and development for decades. They have blocked the development of nuclear power plants. They have blocked the development of shale oil.

They have been good at regulation, taxes and demagoguery about oil company CEO’s.

The Democrats and Obama have stayed in the nihilistic past and will lead America into gasoline shortages reminiscent of the Jimmy Carter years.

    Just wait……

President Bush Asks for End to Offshore Drilling Ban

    Political cartoon by Michael Ramirez

President Bush today has called for an end to the offshore oil drilling ban.

President Bush, reversing a longstanding position, will call on Congress on Wednesday to end a federal ban on offshore oil drilling, according to White House officials who say Mr. Bush now wants to work with states to determine where drilling should occur.

There really is NO reason to delay new oil and natural gas exploration unless the American people wish to change their lifestyles.

If America had taken these steps ten years ago we would not be having the problems with $4 plus gasoline today. And, who is to blame? Guess who?

The Congressional moratorium was first enacted in 1982, and has been renewed every year since. It prohibits oil and gas leasing on most of the outer continental shelf, 3 miles to 200 miles offshore. Since 1990, it has been supplemented by the first President Bush’s executive order, which directed the Interior Department not to conduct offshore leasing or preleasing activity in areas covered by the legislative ban until 2000. In 1998, President Bill Clinton extended the offshore leasing prohibition until 2012.

It is time for the Democrat controlled Congress to do SOMETHING. The GOP in Congress and now the President have made concrete proposals.

    Over to the the Democrats.

    Think they will do anything?

John McCain Watch: OK for States to Permit Oil Drilling Offshore

    Michael Ramirez on Oil Exploration

In a policy change, John McCain now says states should be allowed to permit oil drilling off of their shores.

He said that in the coming weeks, he would be focusing on “America’s energy crisis” – the country’s dependence on foreign oil. Tomorrow he will call for the lifting of “the federal moratorium on states that choose to permit exploration.”

“We must embark on a national mission to eliminate our dependence on foreign oil… exploration is a step toward the longer-term goal.” The candidate repeated his advocacy of a federal gas tax holiday.

Asked about the offshore drilling, McCain responded, “Right now there’s a moratorium, and they have to be lifted. I’m not dictating to the states that they drill for oil. I’m saying the moratorium should be lifted so states can choose that option if they want to.” He added that the situation might require “additional incentives… in terms of tangible financial rewards” to states that permit drilling. He said he didn’t have a particular position at this point on an appropriate distance from the coast for offshore drilling.

    But, what about ANWR?

Campaign Carl Cameron: Is lifting moratoria a way of addressing conservative irritation with your position
    on ANWR?

McCain: “I believe ANWR is a pristine area… but I also believe lifting the moratorium on offshore drilling for oil and natural gas is a very high priority.”

    Not so much…….

John McCain MUST change his position on oil exploration. IT is a national security issue and his thinking like the Democrat’s and Obama’s is anachronistic.

America would NOT be in the mess it is in regarding dependence on foreign oil if there had been REAL leadership over the past few decades.

Senate GOP Blocks Oil Windfall Profits Tax

Michael Ramirez on oil and gas prices

Michael Ramirez on Congress and Oil

United States Senate Republicans today blocked an attempt by Senate Demcorats to impose a windfall profits tax on American oil companies.

But the Democrats had to try to overcome staunch Republican opposition to any new taxes on the oil industry. The five largest U.S. oil companies earned $36 billion during the first three months of the year.

Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., needed 60 votes Tuesday to proceed with the oil tax legislation in the face of a threatened GOP filibuster.

A Republican energy plan, rejected by the Senate last month, calls for opening a coastal strip of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to oil development and to allow states to opt out of the national moratorium that has been in effect for a quarter century against oil and gas drilling in more than 80 percent of the country’s coastal waters.

The Democrats including Barack Obama who supports this taxation are a pathetic bunch. Why do they want to go back to Jimmy Carter days and tax big oil to increase supply and relieve gasoline prices?

Did not work then and will not work now.

Flap remembers the gas lines, the shortages and the rationing.

Earth to the Democrats: Drill for oil and build new refineries while pushing conservation and alternative energy sources.

If the Democrats had NOT blocked drilling in ANWR eight years ago when President Bush and the GOP proposed it, we wold be receiving oil today from the site.

But, the Democrats control Congress and what have they done about HIGH gasoline prices?

    NOTHING but tax……..
