Obama: $ 787 Billion Economic Stimulus “Has Worked As Intended”

    Obama It's Working

The President might try a different embellishment.

President Barack Obama said his $787 billion stimulus bill “has worked as intended” as he pushed back against Republican criticism that his recovery program has failed to rescue the economy.

“It has already extended unemployment insurance and health insurance to those who have lost their jobs in this recession,” Obama, who is traveling today in Ghana, said in his weekly Saturday radio and Web address. “It has delivered $43 billion in tax relief to American working families and business.”

Were it not for the stimulus program, the president said, “state deficits would be nearly twice as large as they are now, resulting in tens of thousands of additional layoffs — layoffs that would affect police officers, teachers, and firefighters.”

In the weekly Republican response, House Minority Whip Eric Cantor of Virginia said the stimulus bill was “full of pork- barrel spending, government waste and massive borrowing cleverly called ‘stimulus.’”

“The plain truth is that President Obama’s economic decisions have not produced jobs, have not produced prosperity, and have not worked,” Cantor said.

He said the Republicans want reductions in tax rates that he said would help middle-class families.

In asking for public patience, Obama said the recovery act “wasn’t designed to restore the economy to full health on its own, but to provide the boost necessary to stop the free fall.”

I thought the economic stimulus pushed by the Democrats and Obama was all about JOBS? You know, like in putting people back to work.

Not to bailout bloated state governments, like California, who refuse to live within their means without more and more taxes.

The spin is not going to play too well and the polls reflect the public’s displeasure. But, to spin results and ask for patience?

This is not going to fly, Mr. President.

Listen to Republican Congressman Eric Cantor from Virginia:

House Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) delivers the weekly Republican address on the economy, the Obama Administrations trillion-dollar “stimulus” spending bill that isnt working, and Republican efforts to offer better solutions.

Oh That Joe: Biden Defends Economic Stimulus Plan in Ohio

    Joe biden 9 17 2008

    Vice President Joe Biden

    Another Biden gaffe?

Vice President Joe Biden said the Obama administration’s efforts to rebuild America’s economy are working and he expressed frustration with those who say progress is too slow.

“Remember, we’re only 140 days into this deal. It’s supposed to take 18 months,” Biden said in a speech after touring a redevelopment project in Cincinnati.

Biden ticked off the programs funded through the $787 billion economic stimulus measure enacted in February. Thousands of jobs a day have been saved and interest rates have been kept low, saving middle-class families $1,200 to $1,600 a year in mortgage payments, he said.

Ohio’s economy has been hit hard by the recession. The state’s unemployment rate in May was 10.8 percent, up from 10.2 percent in April and higher than the national average of 9.4 percent. The state lost 4.9 percent of its jobs between May 2008 and 2009, and manufacturing jobs plummeted by 16.7 percent during that period, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The vice president’s trip follows a poll that found that President Barack Obama’s approval rating has dropped by 13 percentage points from two months ago in Ohio, traditionally a critical swing state in presidential elections.

The survey by Quinnipiac University released July 7 showed 49 percent of Ohio voters approved of Obama’s job performance, down from 62 percent in a May 6 poll. The disapproval figure for Obama in the new poll was 44 percent, up from 31 percent in May.

Ohio “has been hard hit through no fault of your own,” Biden told the crowd today. So far, $4.4 billion in Recovery Act funds have been set aside for Ohio, including $2 billion for education, $1 billion for health care and $445 million for transportation, he said.

“These investments are already lifting up Cincinnati,” he said.

Biden toured the site of the American Can Company, an abandoned factory on the city’s north side which is being converted into a complex of apartments, offices and stores. Stimulus funds will pay $1.6 million of the project’s cost and create as many as 100 jobs, Biden said.

No, just an embellishment of the truth which is worse.

There has been NO economic stimulus in Ohio or anywhere from the ridiculous spending in the Obama Porkulus bill that passed with only three Republican Senate votes (one of which then defected to become a Democrat).

Biden and the congressional Democrats need to take responsibility for their poor performance and patience in this case is just another excuse.

How about a real economic stimulus and cancel the rest of the pork spending, Mr. Vice President?

PORKULUS Watch: Early Road Aid Leaves Out High Unemployment Areas

Ridgway, the seat of Elk County, Pa., is seen nestled amid the green of the Allegheny Mountains, Wednesday, May 6, 2009. Officials and residents of the struggling manufacturing community are learning that they will receive no immediate money from the economic stimulus plan despite the 13.8 percent unemployment rate. Counties suffering the most from job losses are receiving the least help so far from President Barack Obama’s plan to spend billions of stimulus dollars on roads and bridges, an Associated Press analysis has found

Why, of course and why many said the Economic Stimulus or PORKULUS Bill was JUST government spending and really not an economic stimulus.

Counties suffering the most from job losses stand to receive the least help from President Barack Obama’s plan to spend billions of stimulus dollars on roads and bridges, an Associated Press analysis has found.

Although the intent of the money is to put people back to work, AP’s review of more than 5,500 planned transportation projects nationwide reveals that states are planning to spend the stimulus in communities where jobless rates are already lower.

One result among many: Elk County, Pa., isn’t receiving any road money despite its 13.8 percent unemployment rate. Yet the military and college community of Riley County, Kan., with its 3.4 percent unemployment, will benefit from about $56 million to build a highway, improve an intersection and restore a historic farmhouse.

Altogether, the government is set to spend 50 percent more per person in areas with the lowest unemployment than it will in communities with the highest.

The AP reviewed $18.9 billion in projects, the most complete picture available of where states plan to spend the first wave of highway money. The projects account for about half of the $38 billion set aside for states and local governments to spend on roads, bridges and infrastructure in the stimulus plan.

The very promise that Obama made, to spend money quickly and create jobs, is locking out many struggling communities needing those jobs.

Flap is certainly NOT seeing any benefit of the PORKULUS Bill here in California. Taxes have gone up, as the unemployment rate soars.

Mr. President, where is the hope that is on the way?

Poll Watch: 67 Per Cent Say They Could Do a Better Job on the Economy Than Congress

    ramirez toon020909

    Political Cartoon by Michael Ramirez

There has been a “Deal” in the Democrat/Obama Economic Stimulus bill in the House Senate-Conference Committee and the bill with ONLY three Republican Senators supporting it is scheduled to clear the Senate Thursday with the President signing it into law on Friday.

But, that is contrary to the latest polling that says Americans are more confident in their own ability to affect the economy.

When it comes to the nation’s economic issues, 67% of U.S. voters have more confidence in their own judgment than they do in the average member of Congress.

Nineteen percent (19%) trust members of Congress more, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Fourteen percent (14%) aren’t sure.

Republicans and unaffiliated voters by double digits have more confidence in themselves than Democrats do, but even a majority of the party that controls Congress trust themselves more than the average legislator.

Forty-four percent (44%) voters also think a group of people selected at random from the phone book would do a better job addressing the nation’s problems than the current Congress, but 37% disagree. Twenty percent (20%) are undecided.

The new Congress fares worse on this question that the previous Congress. Last October, just 33% said a randomly selected group of Americans would do a better job than the Congress then in session.

Although an $800-billion-plus economic rescue plan has now passed both the House and Senate, the overwhelming majority of voters are not confident that Congress knows what it’s doing with regards to the economy. Fifty-eight percent (58%) agree, too, that “no matter how bad things are, Congress can always find a way to make them worse.”

Well, the American voting public has what Congress wanted for them – all $789 Billion worth. And, will have the pleasure of paying it back.

Sen. Joseph Lieberman, an independent from Connecticut, predicted the bill “will be the beginning of the turnaround for the American economy.”

Reid said the legislation would create 3.5 million jobs.

The Democrats and President Obama OWN this STIMULUS law because it is their creation. When the economy does not rapidly improve and 1970’s style inflation/stagflation reappears.

Don’t say the GOP didn’t tell you so.

Obama Economic Stimulus Bill Health Care Scare – Stealth Provisions Will Ration Senior Care Applying a Cost-Effectiveness Standard for Medicare

    health-care-scare

Flap doubts the three GOP Senators (Specter, Collins and Snowe) that signed off on this “COMPROMISE” even realized these health care provisions were in the bill.

Republican Senators are questioning whether President Barack Obama’s stimulus bill contains the right mix of tax breaks and cash infusions to jump-start the economy.

Tragically, no one from either party is objecting to the health provisions slipped in without discussion. These provisions reflect the handiwork of Tom Daschle, until recently the nominee to head the Health and Human Services Department.

Senators should read these provisions and vote against them because they are dangerous to your health. (Page numbers refer to H.R. 1 EH, pdf version).

The bill’s health rules will affect “every individual in the United States” (445, 454, 479). Your medical treatments will be tracked electronically by a federal system. Having electronic medical records at your fingertips, easily transferred to a hospital, is beneficial. It will help avoid duplicate tests and errors.

But the bill goes further. One new bureaucracy, the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology, will monitor treatments to make sure your doctor is doing what the federal government deems appropriate and cost effective. The goal is to reduce costs and “guide” your doctor’s decisions (442, 446). These provisions in the stimulus bill are virtually identical to what Daschle prescribed in his 2008 book, “Critical: What We Can Do About the Health-Care Crisis.” According to Daschle, doctors have to give up autonomy and “learn to operate less like solo practitioners.”

Keeping doctors informed of the newest medical findings is important, but enforcing uniformity goes too far.

Read the entire piece and pay particular attention to the cost-effectiveness standard for senior’s Medicare.

Medicare now pays for treatments deemed safe and effective. The stimulus bill would change that and apply a cost- effectiveness standard set by the Federal Council (464).

The Federal Council is modeled after a U.K. board discussed in Daschle’s book. This board approves or rejects treatments using a formula that divides the cost of the treatment by the number of years the patient is likely to benefit. Treatments for younger patients are more often approved than treatments for diseases that affect the elderly, such as osteoporosis.

In 2006, a U.K. health board decreed that elderly patients with macular degeneration had to wait until they went blind in one eye before they could get a costly new drug to save the other eye. It took almost three years of public protests before the board reversed its decision.

    Hidden Provisions

If the Obama administration’s economic stimulus bill passes the Senate in its current form, seniors in the U.S. will face similar rationing. Defenders of the system say that individuals benefit in younger years and sacrifice later.

The Democrats slipped into the Democrat/Obama Stimuls Bill a path to UK type socialized medicine standards.

    Surprise.

Great transparency from the Obama Administration and Congressional Democrats – NOT.

The House and Senate GOP Caucus should insist that these provisions be stricken from the final bill in Conference Committee. If the provisions are NOT removed, the GOP should expel Susan Collins, Olympia Snow and Arlen Specter from the Republican Party IMMEDIATELY.

Poll Watch: 62 % Want Economic Stimulus Bill to Have MORE Tax Cuts and Less Spending

    No-on-the-Obama-Economic-st

The latest Rasmussen poll on the Democrat/Obama Economic Stimulus bill says American voters want MORE tax cuts and less government spending – echoing the GOP.

With the Senate poised to vote Tuesday on an $827-billion version of the economic recovery plan, 62% of U.S. voters want the plan to include more tax cuts and less government spending.

Just 14% would like to move in the opposite direction with more government spending and fewer tax cuts, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Twenty percent (20%) would be happy to pass it pretty much as is, and five percent (5%) are not sure.

Republicans and unaffiliated voters overwhelmingly want to see more tax cuts and less government spending. Democrats are more evenly divided: 42% agree with the Republicans, 32% want to pass the plan as is, and 22% would like to see more government spending and fewer tax cuts.

Most conservative and moderate voters want to see more tax cuts. A plurality of liberals say the plan should be passed pretty much as it is.

This is not surprising since Americans traditionally support more of their own money to spend the way THEY want.

Overall, 37% of voters favor the stimulus plan and 43 % are opposed.

The latest Rasmussen Reports poll – showing that 62% want more tax cuts and less government spending – is similar to a CBS News poll taken last week. That poll found that 62% said that reducing taxes will do more than increased spending to end the recession.

Bait and switch with a $9.7 Trillion government bailout?

Chilling Thought of the Day: We Are All Socialists Now

    we-are-all-socialists-now

The new Newsweek Magazine Cover for the week of February 9, 2009

The subheading lede: In many ways our economy already resembles a European one. As boomers age and spending grows, we will become even more French.

So, does the Washington Post and Newsweek know something that Americans do not know?

    We are French?

The Newsweek writers are conflicted on what conservatives who deplore an ever increasing role of government in the economy are actually saying – channeling Bush. Remember Bill Clinton’s pronuncement that the “era of big government is over?”

It is but the LEFT wants to try to reimpose it by fear-mongering the current economic crisis and passing a bloated $1 Trillion plus economic Stimulus spending bill.

As a taxpayers revolt is mounting against the Democrat/Obama Economic Stimulus bill, S.1, the specter of increasing socialism is not a fait de comple.

PORKULUS: Feeling UNSTIMULATED About the Democrat/Obama Economic Stimulus Bill?

In his book “Capitalism and Freedom” (1962) Milton Friedman (1912-2006) advocated minimizing the role of government in a free market as a means of creating political and social freedom.

An excerpt from an interview with Phil Donahue in 1979.

If conservatives (Via Instapundit) are feeling unstimulated or down about the apparent passage of a $1 trillion government spending spree, watch the above exerpt of Milton Friedman and remember why a limited government role in free market capitalism creates more political and social freedom.

    Definitely food for thought.
