Arnold Schwarzenegger Watch: More Money for California Schools

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger answers questions during a news conference at Gompers Middle School in San Diego, Calif., Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005. Schwarzenegger announced plans to allocate an additional $3 billion for California schools.

Yahoo News and the SanDiegoChannel.com have Governor Visits San Diego School.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was in San Diego Tuesday to mark the opening of Gompers Middle School, which was converted into a charter school after years of failing to meet standards for academic achievement.

“This was a struggling school,” Schwarzenegger said. “Test scores were down. Students were falling years behind their grade level. But the people here didn’t give up on the kids.”

“They wouldn’t accept the status quo,” Schwarzenegger said. “They fought for this charter, walking door to door to gather petitions and taking their case to the school board. They put students first and let everyone know that failure is not an option.”

Flap supposes Charter Schools are better than the bureaucratically run plain vanilla public system, like most of the Los Angeles Unified School District which started class today.

Vouchers are better but try to get around the California Teachers Association…. well ask the Governor.

Schwarzenegger also took the opportunity to discuss the $3 billion extra he said the state has budgeted for education this year.

“My education budget for this year provides funding for new initiatives designed to support students and recognize excellent teachers,” Schwarzenegger said.

Great….. more money for a failed public school system.

How do you spell DOWN A RAT HOLE?

Who is running the Governor’s media campaign?

    Predicting Oral Cancer: Toluidine Blue

Study participant Gail Coe (left) is given a toluidine blue screening test by Dr. Michelle Williams of the B.C. Cancer Agency in Vancouver, Thursday.

The Candian Press has Painting mouth lesions with blue dye can predict risk of oral cancer: study.

A simple blue dye used by dentists to detect cancerous lesions in the mouth can also aid early diagnosis by identifying suspicious-looking patches at high risk of becoming malignant, a Canadian study has found.

Researchers at the B.C. Cancer Agency found that abnormal areas of tissue in the mouth that absorb the dye, known as toluidine blue, are six times more likely to become cancerous than those that don’t take up the blue stain.

A press release from the American Association of Cancer Research is here.

A team of Canadian scientists may have discovered a way to use a simple dye as a litmus test to identify abnormal areas of the mouth that may become cancers.

According to a study published in the September 1 issue of Cancer Research, the scientists found that lesions that took up the dye known as toluidine blue were six times more likely to become oral cancers.

The team also discovered that the dye-staining lesions contained molecular alterations that are linked to high risk of oral cancers — even at early stages.

“In oral cavity lesions, tissue that stained positive with toluidine blue were more likely to advance to cancer than lesions that did not stain with the dye,” said Miriam Rosin, Ph.D., Director of the BC Cancer Agency’s British Columbia Oral Cancer Prevention Program and Professor, Simon Fraser University. Rosin is the senior author on the study, funded by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, of the National Institutes of Health.

Toluidine blue is an accepted indicator of oral cancers, Rosin said. The current studies, however, demonstrate that the dye accurately predicts which pre-malignant lesions are likely to advance toward disease. Those lesions appear as white or, less frequently, red patches.

“The vast majority of those white patches are often from minor inflammation and irritation,” Rosin said. Some, however, are inclined to become cancer—and are the ones targeted by this simple imaging technology.

An interesting diagnostic test for the dentist that will aid in the early detection of oral cancer.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Watch: Gay Marriage Veto

Gay News from 365Gay.com has Schwarzenegger Mum Ahead Of Gay Marriage Vote.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is refusing to tip his hand ahead of Tuesday’s landmark vote in the Assembly on legislation that would allow same-sex couples to marry.

The Senate passed the bill on a 21 to 15 vote last Thursday. (story)

The measure failed by four votes in the Assembly earlier this year when a quarter of the Democrats voted with Republicans to reject it and a handful abstained from voting. (story)

This time, Equality California, the state’s largest LGBT rights group, believes it has the votes to pass the bill. The organization has been focusing its lobbying effort on the four assemblymembers who abstained.

Called the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act, the bill would require local clerks to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples but allow people opposed to gay marriage to refuse to conduct weddings.

If the bill makes it through the Assembly, California would be the first state to pass gay marriage equality legislation. In Massachusetts, the only state where same-sex marriage currently is legal, it was the state Supreme Court that made the decision.

Whether Schwarzenegger will sign it into law is another matter.

    Flap can tell you.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will NOT alienate his conservative Republican base.

How many ways can you spell VETO!

    Ben’s Law explains the legalese.
