Arnold Schwarzenegger Watch: Endorses SON of Paycheck Protection

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger speaks during a meeting with Mexican Undersecretary for North American Affairs, Geronimo Gutierrez in his office in Sacramento, Calif., Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2005. Later in the day the Governor held private interviews with various news organizations. In that interview Schwarzenegger discussed a wide range of matters pertaining to the special election and his own decision to pursue a second term next year.

Anthony York at the Capitol Weekly has Schwarzenegger signs off on shareholder protection.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said in an interview Tuesday that he would support a ban on corporations using shareholder money for political purposes without the expressed written consent of company shareholders.

The ban on such use of corporate dollars is similar to the governor’s call to stop the use of public employee union dues without written permission from union members. That measure, Proposition 75, was endorsed by the governor at the Republican state party convention this weekend, and will be on the special election ballot in November.

“It’s not right to force people to do that,” he said when asked about the use of corporate money for political purposes without consent. “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander … I support anything [that prohibits political spending] where people are not asked. People must be asked.”

    This makes sense to Flap.

However, corporate contributions are already prohibited and illegal in federal elections.

Supporters of the idea have already submitted a measure that would place those restrictions on corporate political activity to the attorney general’s office. The measure prohibits corporations from “making political contributions or expenditures for political activities except with shareholders’ prior informed consent by means of majority vote and reports to shareholders.”The measure needs 373,000 signatures by the end of the year to qualify for the June 2006 ballot.

If Proposition 75 fails this November, Flap handicaps a combination measure including Paycheck Protection and the Son of Paycheck Protection will appear in November 2006. Schwarzenegger can run on this……but what about Angelides? or Westly?

Is this a Paycheck Protection box that the Governator has put the Deomocrats?

But the governor said he was not endorsing a specific proposal “It’s all hypothetical, but I’m all for it across the board,” he said.

Backers of the idea were skeptical at best. “If you believe that, then I’ve got a bridge,” said Democratic consultant Gale Kaufman who is leading the campaign against some of the governor’s initiatives on the November ballot. “This is what he does. He promises one thing and turns his back on his promises.”

    Stay Tuned……..

Judge John Roberts Watch: Democrat Senate Minority Leader Reid Says NO!

Judge John Roberts, left, meets with Sen. Saxby Chamliss, R-Ga., on Capitol Hil,l Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2005 in Washington, to discuss Roberts’ confirmation as Chief Justice of the United States.

The ASSociated Press has Sen. Reid Says He’ll Vote Against Roberts.

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid said Tuesday he would oppose confirmation of Chief Justice-nominee John Roberts, questioning Roberts’ commitment to civil rights and accusing the Bush administration of stonewalling requests for documents that might shed light on his views.

At the same time, Reid readily predicted Roberts will win Senate confirmation, coupling the forecast with a warning of sorts to
President Bush as he considers candidates for a second vacancy on the Supreme Court. “No one should think that just automatically they’re all going to be easy like this one,” he said.

Reid is one of four senators invited to a White House meeting with Bush on Wednesday to discuss the vacancy created by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s decision to retire.

Senator Reid has not one good argument to oppose Judge Roberts and since he will probably retire and not face Nevada voters again he can do as he pleases.

Judge Roberts will be confirmed as Chief Justice.

Even the Los Angeles Times has endorsed Roberts
…….what is that freezin’ sound……in HADES.

If a majority of Democrats in the Senate vote against Roberts, they will reveal themselves as nothing more than self-defeating obstructionists.

    Indeed.

Beyond that, Reid said he would view it as a “poke in the eye with a sharp stick” if Bush were to nominate any of the 10 appeals court nominees that Democrats blocked in recent years, including some who were later confirmed. He declined to say whether Attorney General Alberto Gonzales falls into the same category.

One White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said at least some of the contenders on the president’s list fall into the category that would draw Reid’s ire.

President Bush poke away with your nomination of Appeals Court Judge Priscilla Owen.

Cindy Sheehan Watch: NYPD Pulls the PLUG

Cindy Sheehan speaking out in Union Square with Al Zappala, who also lost a son in Iraq.

The ASSociated Press has NYC Police Shut Down Cindy Sheehan Speech.

Police cut short a speech by anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan and arrested a rally organizer, saying he hadn’t obtained a permit for use of a loudspeaker.

Sheehan, the grieving mother whose 26-day vigil near
President Bush’s Texas ranch sparked anti-war protests around the country, had nearly finished her speech Monday when police intervened.

Supporters ushered her away from the rally at Manhattan’s Union Square park as onlookers yelled at police and chanted “Let her speak!”

And they said the Texas officers were bad?

Now watch out for the lawsuit New York.

Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan said Tuesday she was hurt slightly in a scuffle that erupted when police broke up a rally as she was at the microphone.

“I think their use of force was pretty excessive for someone that didn’t have a permit,” Sheehan said.

More of the Sheehan nonsense is reported here.

Has Sheehan met with Hillary yet?

SCOTUS WATCH: Priscilla Owen Front-Runner to Replace Sandra Day O’Connor? REDUX

President Bush participates in a Homeland Security Council meeting, Monday, Sept. 19, 2005, in the Cabinet Room of the White House. At right is Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld.

The ASSociated Press has Who Will Bush Tap As Next Court Nominee?

President Bush’s supporters want him to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O’Connor with a rock-solid conservative jurist, but Bush’s low poll numbers have given liberals hope he’ll nominate a moderate to avoid a raucous fight in the Senate.

PLEASE. Do you really think Bush wants to give the LEFT any hope with SCOTUS nominations. The President will appoint HIS nominee not someone who Slow Joe Plagiarising Biden or Water Under the Bridge Teddy Kennedy approves.

The White House won’t discuss the selection process, but some legal experts who talk to Bush administration officials regularly say the president is interviewing new prospects. On Wednesday, Bush meets with top senators from both parties about who should be picked for the lifetime appointment.

Regardless of his choice, the wrenching recovery from the hurricane that hit the Gulf Coast will serve as the backdrop for Bush’s next Supreme Court nomination.

Ironically, a lot of speculation about who will be named is focused on New Orleans, the seat of the 5th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. Five judges on that bench — Priscilla Richman Owen, Edith Brown Clement, Edith Hollan Jones, Emilio Garza and Edward Charles Prado have been floated as possible Bush picks.

Mentioned most frequently in recent weeks is Owen, a former Texas Supreme Court justice who is well known to the Bush family but has been a federal appellate judge only since June. Owen was the subject of a filibuster for the appeals court seat, yet she was confirmed, along with four other controversial judges, under a compromise filibuster agreement crafted by seven Democrats and seven Republicans in the Senate.

Flap handicaps the President’s nominee will be Appeals Court Judge Priscilla Owen.

    Robert Novak agrees.

The American Specator is not so sure.

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s meeting and the leaks.
