Dentistry Technology Watch: FDA Approves TMJ Total Replacement System

The Food and Drug Administration has approved the Total Temporomandibular Joint Replacement System, manufactured by Walter Lorenz Surgical, Incorporated.

    The approval letter is here.

What is it? The Total Temporomandibular Joint Replacement System is a prosthetic jaw joint.

How does it work? The device is a ball and socket joint with one side mounted to the jaw and the other side mounted to the head in front of the ear. A surgeon implants the joint after removing any old devices, unsuccessful grafts, and badly damaged bone.

When is it used? The device is used for patients who need a total jaw replacement due to one or more of the following conditions:

    • severe arthritic conditions
    • fused joints
    • previous multiple surgeries
    • severe fractures
    • tumors
    • severely degenerated joints
    • severe developmental abnormalities that cannot be treated by other means

What will it accomplish? The device may reduce jaw pain, reduce interference with eating and increase the ability to open the mouth. Patients who have had many previous jaw surgeries may have more complications during joint reconstruction.

When should it not be used? The device should not be used for partial TMJ joint reconstruction, or if the patient:

    • has an active or chronic infection
    • has insufficient bone to support the device
    • has a systemic disease with increased susceptibility to infection
    • has an allergy to any materials used in the device
    • has mental or neurological conditions, and is unwilling or unable to follow postoperative care instructions
    • is skeletally immature
    • has severe hyper-functional habits (e.g. clenching or grinding teeth).
    • has a foreign body reaction due to previous implants

Additional information: The Summary of Safety and Effectiveness and labeling will be available at: http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/pdf2/p020016.html

The Lorenz Surgical site is here.

For the individuals who need total joint replacement there is now another solution.

Stay tuned for more developments in this area of TM joint replacement and/or modification.

Bill Maher DumbASS Moron Watch: Bush is Drinking again

    Time to CANCEL HBO.

Look at the latest from DUMBASS Bill Maher.

    Crooks and Liars has it.

Bill Maher has some fun with President Bush, using the National Enquirer article that states GWB is drinking again as his spring board.

Morons: Hitchings, Kay and Galloway join Maher in the fun on Maher’s HBO program Real Time, including the OT photo of a facially battered/ abused and black-eyed Laura Bush from a beating presumably from a drunk President Bush.

    NOT FUNNY – Maher!

    What a DUMBASS!

The National Enquirer has BUSH’S BOOZE CRISIS

Michelle Malkin wonders if any women’s organizations like NOW will make a comment about the light hearted fun of abusing and battering women?

Flap wonders if the senior executives at Time Warner who own HBO are also so cavalier as to the issues of alcoholism and the abuse of women?

Who gave this DUMBASS another program……after he was KICKED OFF the air at ABC?

Did THIS have anything to do with Friday’s show?

Moonbat Cartoon Watch: A Bombin’ Nation

This poster evolved out of charting Dick Cheney’s increasingly apoplectic addiction to oil and World Domination. As his frustration grew over the embarrassing search for fake reasons to invade Iraq—phantom WMD’s, for instance—I could just see his inner Enronergizer Bunny popping out of his skull and, in a form of karmic payback (known mostly to old stone cold hippies like myself and the mushrooming members of Hip-Hop Nation), dropping bunnyshitbombs all over him. After all, his vision of America is A BOMBIN’ NATION!

    From the Moonbat LEFT.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Watch: Bulworth v. Terminator – The QUOTES

Actor Warren Beatty addresses members of the California Nurses Association on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, in Oakland, Calif. Beatty, a Democrat who has been mentioned as a possible challenger to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger next year, has in the past few months emerged as one of the governor’s most visible and vociferous critics.

Flap previously had Arnold Schwarzenegger Watch: Bulworth Rips Arnold a New One.

Will Warren Beatty run against Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger?

    Probably NOT.

But, the immature sandbox type quotes make interesting reading. Well maybe…..

Schwarzenegger to Beatty: “You’re a Crackpot”

Beatty to Schwarzenegger: You are a “right-wing spokesmodel” with “dictatorial … reactionary, union-busting” ways.

    Well….. you get the idea……

    Warren Beatty:

“I have always preferred not to run for public office, and I still prefer not to run for public office. … I believe if a private citizen is able to affect public opinion, he doesn’t have to be an elected public servant to perform a public service,”

“Arnold says he’s not in this for the short run. We have to show him – neither are we!”

He hailed the politically active nurses for giving Schwarzenegger’s administration “the massive enema it deserves … and exposing his policies for what they really are.”

“Governing by show, by stunts, by cosmetics, by photo ops and fake events and fake issues and fake crowds and backdrops – that’s a mistake. … That concept of reality should be saved for action movies and show business.”

    Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger:

The former Mr. Universe hurled a slew of new insults at Beatty just days ago, calling him “starving for attention … jealous … silly.”

And to twist the knife, Schwarzenegger threw in the ultimate Tinseltown dis. “Look, he’s not working and he just feels like maybe he should get involved in politics,” the governor told The Associated Press.

School yard politics…..stay tuned for more……..

President George Bush Watch: Post-Disaster Plan

President Bush participates in a briefing on Hurricane Rita at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas., Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005. Military officials told President Bush on Sunday that the U.S. needs a national plan to coordinate search and rescue efforts following natural disasters or terrorist attacks

The ASSociated Press has Bush Told U.S. Needs Post-Disaster Plan.

Military officials told President Bush on Sunday that the U.S. needs a national plan to coordinate search and rescue efforts following natural disasters or terrorist attacks.

Bush said he is interested in whether the Defense Department should take charge in massive national disasters.

“Clearly, in the case of a terrorist attack, that would be the case, but is there a natural disaster — of a certain size — that would then enable the Defense Department to become the lead agency in coordinating and leading the response effort?” Bush asked. “That’s going to be a very important consideration for Congress to think about.”

The President in time of emergency should have executive authority – as Commander in Chief.

Under the existing relationship, a state’s governor is chiefly responsible for disaster preparedness and response. Governors can request assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. If federal armed forces are brought in to help, they do so in support of FEMA, through Northern Command, set up as part of a military reorganization after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

    Obvious…..DO IT!

California Iraq War Protests Generate Strong Turnout?

A demonstrator, in a U.S. President George W. Bush mask, holds up his hands smeared with mock blood during an anti-war march in downtown Los Angeles September 24, 2005. Thousands of protesters flooded Los Angeles on Saturday to stage demonstrations against the U.S.-led war in Iraq and to demand that Bush bring troops home.

The ASSociated Press has Thousands of Californians protest Iraq war.

Drums pounded, voices boomed and whistles shrieked as thousands of demonstrators marched in the shadows of downtown skyscrapers Saturday to protest America’s involvement in Iraq, one of several California demonstrations on a day of protests across the country.

The crowd, a mix of people ranging from mothers pushing baby strollers to spiky haired punk rockers, chanted for an end to the bloodshed and waved signs that said, “Who would Jesus have bombed?” and “War is not the answer.”

Police closed a downtown street to accommodate the protest, which they said drew an estimated 15,000 people.

The estimated crowds in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and San Francisco are contrived higher than actual numbers.

In any event, 15,000 people turning out for any event in Los Angeles cannot be considered strong. For example, the Los Angeles Marathon in which Flap participated last March had over 20,000 participants.

Actor Ed Asner takes part in a protest against U.S. involvement in Iraq, in downtown Los Angeles Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005. Drums pounded, voices boomed and whistles shrieked as demonstrators, some 15,000 by police estimates, marched in the shadows of downtown skyscrapers Saturday, one of several California demonstrations on a day of protests across the country.

    In San Francisco………

The San Francisco Chronicle has Peace marches draw thousands in S.F., D.C. Bay Area: Largest war protest since Iraq conflict started

It was a sunny day in the Bay Area, a picture-perfect day to cheer for the A’s, enjoy a blues festival, take part in a parade celebrating electronic music, or join peace marches in San Francisco and Walnut Creek.

The march began at 12:30 p.m. at Dolores Park and ended about two hours later at Jefferson Square Park.

The largely peaceful protest in San Francisco drew about 20,000 people, according to police. Organizers put the figure at closer to 50,000. Either way, it was one of the region’s largest anti-war demonstrations since the United States invaded Iraq more than two years ago.

In San Diego, more than 2,000 protesters marched through downtown to a city park where they displayed mock coffins commemorating the deaths of Iraqi civilians and white crosses to represent fallen American soldiers. A small group of counter-protestors turned out to support the war.
