Harriet Miers Watch: Born Again Evangelical Christian
Drudge has MIERS FOUND CHRIST, TURNED REPUBLICAN.
By 1979, Harriet Miers, then in her mid-30s, had accomplished what some people take a lifetime to achieve. She was a partner at Locke Purnell Boren Laney & Neely, one of the most prestigious law firms in the South.
But she still felt something was missing in her life.
The NEW YORK TIMES is set to splash the “something” on Page Ones on Wednesday, newsroom sources tell the DRUDGE REPORT.
It was after a series of long discussions with Nathan Hecht, a junior colleague and sweetheart, that led her to a decision that many of the people around her say changed Miers life.
“She decided that she wanted faith to be a bigger part of her life,” Hecht said. “One evening she called me to her office and said she was ready to make a commitment,” to accept Jesus Christ as her savior and be born again, Hecht said. Miers became an evangelical Christian and began identifying more with the Republican Party than with the Democrats who had long held sway over Texas politics. Developing…
Ok!
And she has taught Sunday school as well.
Both commendable.
And Flap continues to support her nomination.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Watch: Barbara Kerr’s Schedule
Barbara Kerr, President of the California Teachers Association
In some light-hearted fun, Todd Harris over at the Join Arnold blog has this on CTA President Barbara Kerr.
Barbara Kerr’s Schedule
So there I was, walking through downtown Sacramento, minding my own business, when I happened upon a small piece of paper on the sidewalk from what looked like a Franklin Planner. I guess it stood out to me because of the big “I Hate Arnold” doodle in the upper left-hand corner.
I reached down to pick it up and you can imagine my surprise when I read what it was: “Barbara Kerr, Daily Schedule.” I found it quite interesting and therefore have reproduced it here for all of you:
Barbara Kerr Daily Schedule
8am Check in with Fabian to give daily marching orders
8:30am Check on billboard budget for 9th Senate District
8:35am Call Perata to make sure he hasn’t done anything stupid lately
9am Shakedown local teachers for campaign cash
10am Edit new TV ads attacking Governor for hating kids
10:30am Give Los Angeles Times their daily set of talking points and recommended stories
11:30am Check with media buyer re: bulk discounts on ad rates
12:00pm Meeting with bullhorn sales reps re: bulk purchases
12:30am Toss second letter from Tom Campbell requesting debate
1pm Check on interest rates for second and third mortgages on business properties
1:30pm Casting meeting for my new original ballet: “The Dance of the Lemons”
2:30pm Write intimidation letters to people who disagree with me, and therefore must hate kids
3:30pm Inquire as to whether it would be cheaper to simply buy TV stations

Heh!

California Special Election Watch: New Television Ads = “The Big Lie”
The Alliance for a Better California has “No on Prop 74†Campaign Releases Two New Television Ads.
Today the “No on Prop 74†campaign released two new television commercials airing statewide to outline the Governor’s continued broken promises and how his initiative will devastate public schools and drive teachers out of the profession.
“It is essential that voters understand just how devastating Prop. 74 really is to our public schools,” said Barbara E. Kerr, president of the California Teachers Association. “At a time when our state will need 100,000 new teachers over the next 10 years, this Governor is working to blame teachers for the problems in our schools and drive both new and experienced teachers out of the profession.”
Watch the new No on 74 commercial “Record.”
Watch the new No on 74 commercial “Stop Playing.”
Let’s look at the “Big Lie (s)”
Commercial #1
Teacher: Governor, you’ve already broken your promises on education. Now you’re sponsoring Proposition 74, a ballot measure that allows one principal to fire a teacher without giving a reason – or even a hearing. While doing nothing to improve teacher training.
Parent: Parents like me are voting no on Prop 74 to send the Governor a message: Stop playing politics with our schools. And get to work on smaller class sizes, up-to-date textbooks, and restoring music and art classes—the things our kids really need.
Proposition 74 official title and summary is here.
• Increases length of time required before a teacher may become a permanent employee from two
complete consecutive school years to fi ve complete consecutive school years.
• Measure applies to teachers whose probationary period commenced during or after the 2003–2004
fiscal year.
• Modifies the process by which school boards can dismiss a permanent teaching employee who receives
two consecutive unsatisfactory performance evaluations.LIE: Proposition 74 does not allow one principal to fire a teacher without giving a reason – or even a hearing.
Current California law gives a school district the right to terminate a probationary teacher already. Proposition 74 will lengthen the probationary period from two to five years.
Commercial #2
NARRATOR:
Before taking Governor Schwarzenegger’s word that his Prop 74 is good for schools…… look at his record:
Schwarzenegger borrowed two billion from our schools and broke his promise to pay it back.
He wants to reduce school funding by another four billion and give himself the power to make more cuts without consulting anyone else.
Now his Prop 74 allows a principal to fire a teacher without giving a reason – or even a hearing.Prop 74. Another bad Schwarzenegger idea that hurts our schools.
LIE: Proposition 74 DOES NOT allow a principal to fire a teacher without giving a reason – or even a hearing. The principal can recommend the school board do that now to a probationary teacher.
LIE: Governor Schwarzenegger has actually budgeted increased funding for California Schools to the tune of $3 Billion.
Flap is looking forward to Governor Schwarzenegger’s reply.

Dentistry Today: Cow Milk Beats Breast Milk For Healthy Teeth
The Journal of Pediatrics has Comparison of the Cariogenicity of Cola, Honey, Cow Milk, Human Milk, and Sucrose.
Objective. The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the cariogenicity of various fluids that are frequently fed to infants and toddlers. We chose to examine sucrose, cola drink, honey, human milk, cow milk, and water because some of these have been associated with development of early childhood caries, although direct experimental evidence is lacking.
Methods. We used our desalivated rat model because the approach mimics the situation found in infants, whereby the flow of saliva is interrupted through mechanical effects of a nipple. The animals received basic nutrition by gavage, and the fluids being tested were available ad libitum. Thus, the only substances that came in contact with teeth were the test fluids. The investigation continued for 14 days.
Results. Cola, sucrose, and honey were by far the most cariogenic. In addition, cola and honey induced considerable erosion. Human milk was significantly more cariogenic than cow milk probably because of its lower mineral content and higher level of lactose.
Conclusions. Our data show that the use of honey, cola, and sucrose water in nursing bottles should be discouraged. Although human milk is more cariogenic than cow milk, it is no more cariogenic than are common infant formulas. Protracted exposure to human milk or formula through allowing an infant to sleep on the nipple should be discouraged, and the need for oral hygiene after tooth eruption should be emphasized.
Flap would not recommend the abandonment of breast-feeding.
But, those overnight bottles laced with sugary substances and honey have got to go – Flap has seen too much dental damage as a result.

California Special Election CA 48 Watch: Election Day
Senator John Campbell with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
The ASSociated Press has 17 Candidates Compete for Open House Seat.
Seventeen candidates in Southern California’s heavily Republican Orange County competed Tuesday in a special election for the nation’s only open House seat, a vacancy created when Rep. Christopher Cox (news, bio, voting record) left to become chief of the
Securities and Exchange Commission. The race was expected to become a contest between the conservative and moderate factions of the GOP.State Sen. John Campbell, a conservative former car dealer endorsed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, was considered the front-runner.
But Marilyn Brewer, a former state assemblywoman who has kept her distance from President Bush and emphasized her support for abortion rights and the environment, hoped to upset Campbell with support from moderate Republicans, Democrats and independents.
And how will Minuteman organizer Jim Gilchrist figure into the mix?
In the Orange County congressional race, third-party candidate Jim Gilchrist, a co-founder of the Minuteman Project that has organized volunteer patrols along the Mexican border to stop illegal immigrants, threatened to siphon off support for Campbell among GOP conservatives.
Stay tuned for election results later this evening.

Harriet Miers Watch: Miers Qualified to Be on Top Court
White House Counsel Harriet Miers sits in the Oval Office as President George W. Bush talks on the phone in the background in Washington in this July 1, 2005 file photo. U.S. President George W. Bush on Monday reached into his inner circle and nominated Miers for a Supreme Court vacancy, choosing a woman with legal experience but who is not a judge to replace the retiring Sandra Day O’Connor. Photo taken on July 1, 2005.
The ASSociated Press has Bush: Miers Qualified to Be on Top Court.
In the face of criticism from the left and right, President Bush insisted Tuesday that Harriet Miers is the best-qualified candidate for the Supreme Court and assured skeptical conservatives that his lawyer-turned-nominee shares his judicial philosophy — and won’t stray from a rightward course.
“I’ve known her long enough to know she’s not going to change, that 20 years from now she will be the same person with the same judicial philosophy she has today,” Bush said. “She’ll have more experience. She’ll have been a judge, but nevertheless the philosophy won’t change, and that’s important to me.
Flap is disappointed that Harriet Miers is the President’s SCOTUS nominee. But, will cautiously support her nomination and confirmation.
Flap has support from other conservatives.
Hugh Hewitt has Integrity and Do You Trust Them?
Ken Masugi over at Local Liberty has Justice Miers?
Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family is cautiously supprotive as well.
Michelle Malkin is not so sure. The American Thinker is very sure with Don’t misunderestimate Miers.
Stay tuned.

California Special Election Watch: New Poll Results
A new California Special Election Poll has been released by SurveyUSA.
Data Collected: 09/30/2005 – 10/02/2005
Release Date: 10/03/2005 12:25 PM ET
Sponsoring News Organizations: KABC-TV Los Angeles, KPIX-TV San FranciscoAnalysis: In an election today, 10/3/05, 36 days to the 11/8/05 vote, California voters approve Proposition 73, Proposition 74, Proposition 75, Proposition 76 and Proposition 77, according to an exclusive SurveyUSA poll of 532 likely voters. Proposition 74, on teacher tenure, passes today by 11 points, 55% to 44%. Propositions 73, 75, 76, and 77 all pass by at least 20 points. Republicans support all 5 Propositions by at least a 57-point margin. Democrats oppose all 5 Propositions by at least a 10-point margin. Support for all 5 measures is strongly tied to approval of Governor Schwarzenegger. Those who approve of the job the Governor is doing, vote overwhelming “Yes” on all 5 Propositions. Those who disapprove of the job the Governor is doing oppose all 5 Propositions. Interest in ballot measures intensifies as the election approaches and ad dollars are spent to influence voters. These numbers can and should be expected to fluctuate, perhaps significantly.

Contrast this poll with the latest PPIC poll.
Thirty days from election day…….let the media campaign begin.
Has anyone done an analysis as to who will actually bother to go to the polls and vote?
Update #1
Dan Weintraub of the Sacramento Bee has his take on the poll, Poll shows gov’s measures ahead.
The Schwarzenegger camp is touting the first public poll to show the governor’s initiatives leading. You can find it here. It’s a SurveyUSA poll done for some California television stations. The firm’s polls have taken flak in the past because they use recorded voices to question voters. But they do have a decent track record. One thing unique about this particular poll is that it uses very short, simple (but accurate) questions on the ballot measures instead of the more legalistic ballot language preferred by the established California public polls, like Field and PPIC. The biggest difference between this poll’s results and earlier public polls is that this one shows independents siding with Schwarzenegger rather than against him.
