Mark Steyn @ The Claremont Institute Dinner: The Reception
After registration Flap ran into Ken Masugi of the Claremont Institute Local Liberty Blog and noticed renown conservative political/media strategist and analyst Arnie Steinberg arrive.
The 250 guests arrived and were treated to a Champagne reception.
Flap set up his laptop and blogged until the crowd began to congregate.
Mark Steyn made his way from his suite to mingle with the dinner patrons and guests.
The topic: Conservative Politics, of course.
California State Senator and candidate for Lt. Governor Tom McClintock’s name was mentioned frequently in overheard conversations.
So, who is Mark Steyn (for the uninitiated)?
In the United Kingdom, Mark appears in The Daily Telegraph , Britain’s biggest-selling broadsheet daily, and writes on current events and movies for The Spectator, the oldest continuously-published magazine in the English language. In the United States, he is a columnist for The Chicago Sun-Times, America’s fifth most-read daily paper, and also appears in The New York Sun, the city’s first new broadsheet daily in a quarter of a century, The Washington Times , and The Orange County Register in California. In addition, Mark is drama critic for The New Criterion, resident obituarist for The Atlantic Monthly , and National Review’s Happy Warrior. In his native Canada, he can be read in the new magazine The Western Standard . Mark also appears regularly in The Jerusalem Post, the Middle East’s leading English-language daily, and The Irish Times, Ireland’s newspaper of record; and more occasionally in other publications, including The Australian ,The Wall Street Journal and (translated into Italian) Il Foglio, but even when he’s not in them he thinks they’re worth reading, which is why we link to them here. Mark doesn’t do a lot of TV and radio these days, but he enjoys his appearances on The Hugh Hewitt Radio Show.
Mark can be read on Monday in The New York Sun and The Washington Times, Tuesday in The Daily Telegraph, Wednesday in The Jerusalem Post, Thursday (for Londoners) or Friday (for the rest of the United Kingdom) in The Spectator, and Sunday in The Chicago Sun-Times and The Orange County Register, as well as every two weeks in National Review and The Western Standard and every month in The Atlantic Monthly and The New Criterion.
Steyn’s latest book, America Alone: Our Country’s Future as a Lone Warrior (Hardcover) will be forthcoming shortly.
On to dinner, award presentation and speech by Steyn…..but first a photo of attorney and Bear Flag League member, Jeff, SoCal Law Blog……

Stanley “Tookie” Williams Watch: NOT Afraid to Die
Caution: This POST contains graphic violent images.
Protesters gather on the steps of City Hall to demonstrate against the pending execution of Stanley Tookie Williams in San Francisco, Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2005. Death penalty opponents rallied around the state Wednesday to call on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to save the life of convicted killer-turned-gang peace activist Stanley Tookie Williams. The co-founder of the Crips street gang is scheduled to die Dec. 13 by lethal injection at San Quentin state prison after being convicted of murdering four people in 1979.
The San Francisco Chronicle has Williams says he’s prepared for death but hopes for life
In interview, condemned killer denies guilt, tells of redemption
Stanley Tookie Williams is not afraid to die.
The 51-year-old convicted murderer, who has spent nearly half of his life on Death Row, knows his scheduled execution date is less than two weeks away, but he says he is not fearful, that it’s a prospect he has dealt with his entire life.
“Being near death is nothing new to me or any other black male,” Williams said Thursday during an interview in a visiting room at San Quentin State Prison. “I’ve been shot and close to death many times. This is no different.
“But I am praying that I live. Of course, I want to live.”
Tookie, what about your innocent, hapless victims who you brutally murdered?
Did THEY want to LIVE?
What about:

Yee-Chen LinIn preparation for the execution, prison officials have asked Williams what he would like for his last meal, whether he wants to invite any friends or family to witness his death and whether he would like a minister present.
“I told them that if I am going to die, I don’t want food or water or sympathy from the place that is going to kill me,” said Williams, a soft-spoken man with a bodybuilder’s physique and graying hair that is pulled into a tight ponytail. “I don’t want anyone present for the sick and perverted spectacle. The thought of that is appalling and inhumane. It is disgusting for a human to sit and watch another human die.”
And Tookie did it disgust and repulse you when you shotgunned your victims to death?

“I am praying that the governor will recognize my work,” Williams said over lunch, a turkey sandwich and a can of grapefruit juice purchased by one of his visitors. “Clemency is not based on legal issues but on individual change that benefits society.
“I have changed and am doing something that is positive and productive and is not at all disruptive to the prison.”
What a load of CRAP.
Justice for Tookie’s Victims
Williams says he wouldn’t change anything about his life, because it took the bad times to get to the good. He says he probably would not be an author if not for his tragic start.
NO REMORSE.NO REDEMPTION
BIG JAB.
