Compton Killings Highest in Years
Los Angeles Times: Compton Killings Highest in Years
The city saw at least 72 homicides in 2005. Some say the sheriff’s response is too passive. Others ask why the city doesn’t pay for more patrols. At least 72 people were killed in Compton in 2005, the highest toll in a decade for a city that has ranked among the most dangerous in the nation for 30 years.
The rise in homicides frightened residents who have long lived with high levels of gang violence but had seen a downturn in violent crime in recent years.
In addition to those killed in Compton, at least nine more people were shot to death in unincorporated areas within a few blocks of the city boundary.

Russia-Ukrine Gas War Watch: Gazprom Capitulates
General view of Russian gas monopoly Gazprom headquarters in Moscow, January 2, 2006.
Reuters: Chastised Russia all but abandons gas blockade
Russia was forced to all but abandon a gas blockade against neighboring Ukraine on Monday after European trade partners said their own supplies had been hit and warned Moscow relations would suffer.
State-controlled Gazprom said it would restore full gas supplies to Europe by Tuesday, two days after the gas monopoly stopped supplies to Ukraine when Kiev refused to pay a fourfold price rise.
Germany, Russia’s main trading partner, warned it would think twice about importing more gas unless Moscow could prove it was a reliable supplier.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Watch: Austria “State Criminal”
The stadium at Graz, Austria, on Monday Dec, 26, 2005, after the name of California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was removed from the stadium overnight. Officials in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s hometown Graz, removed his name from the soccer stadium overnight, complying with the California governor’s demand in a bitter dispute over his death penalty stance. Schwarzenegger had written to the mayor of Graz a week ago, asking that his name be removed after local activists called for the stadium to be renamed because of Schwarzenegger’s refusal to block the execution of convicted killer Stanley Tookie Williams in California.
MARK STEYN: Like It Is: Tookie goes to Austria
“…People have had enough of him,” Peter Pilz, an MP in the Steiermark regional parliament, told The Guardian. “For us, he has committed a state crime…”
“…Americans have responsibilities, Europeans have attitudes….”
So, like the von Trapps, Arnold is singing as he goes:
Green Party poseurs
And posturing mayors
Renaming stadia
For multiple slayers
Dull civic honors of cheap cheesy rings
These are a few of my least fav’rite things…
Arnold to Graz: Don’t ring me, I’ll ring you.Good Grief……..
