Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia gives the keynote speech on the debate over the role that international and foreign law should play in American judicial decision-making, during a day-long symposium at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006.
ASSociated Press: Hecklers Disrupt Scalia at D.C. Appearance
Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia grew tired of a persistent heckler Tuesday and asked organizers of a legal seminar to do something about the outbursts _ gently.
“Don’t use force,” Scalia told American Enterprise Institute workers as they grabbed the young man’s arm and nudged him toward the door. The workers then let go and the man walked out.
It was unclear what Aaron Yule, 23, of Boston, was asking when Scalia turned to organizers and said, “Can you, somebody …”
Earlier, a microphone had been snatched from the man’s hand when he tried to engage the justice in debate. Scalia had asked him whether he had a question, “apart from insults.”
The speech from C-Span: U.S. Supremce Court Justice Scalia on Outsourcing American Law
The young questioners were by and large ignorant of the subject and rude – much like the comments section at the Huffington Post or the Daily Kos.
Justice Scalia was obviously annoyed with the lack of preparation, intelligence and tone of the questioners. For the most part an opportunity to question the Justice on the role of international law on the American courts was lost.
Will the Justice allow himself to be questioned again?
Probably……but let’s hope C-Span and the American Enterprise Institute screen a better audience.
Update #1
Proof of Law Blog has Media coverage of Scalia speech
The questioner (a Google search shows that he’s a member of LaRouche Youth) continued to interrupt proceedings, and was eventually removed. There continued to be a mix of intelligent questions (Tom Goldstein and Michael Greve engaged the justice) and provocateurs wanting to make a splash on C-SPAN. Scalia answered questions about his speech, and passed on other questions, but, as if a glutton for punishment (or at least confrontation), he continued to select scruffy leftists/LaRouche Youth who raised their hands (including a German woman who went on a rant about Leibniz), though it would have been easy to bypass them.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Watch: “What Does Arnold Schwarzenegger Believe in?”
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger views a portion of the levee along the Sacramento River while getting a tour of the levees in a California National Guard Helicopter, near Sacramento, Calif., Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006. Schwarzenegger, who has announced that he wants to spend $2.5 billion over the next 10 years to strengthen levees and improve the flood managment system, called on the federal government to provide federal funds to help cover the costs.
ASSociated Press: Voters Start to Ask Who Schwarzenegger Is
Atoning for a year in which California voters turned against him, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger confessed to a litany of political sins last month but took solace in a few words, “I led from my heart.” A lot of voters might wonder what that means.
Well, he certainly didn’t lead California with his BRAIN. The California Special Election last November was a disaster.
Arnold actually LOST that election when he had already WON it.
As he begins his pursuit of a second term in Sacramento, the twists and lurches of recent months have left a residual question about his leadership: What does Arnold Schwarzenegger believe in?
This is a difficult question to answer. During the recall of failed Democrat Governor Gray Davis, Arnold was a fiscal conservative and anti-tax.
After the election he immediately campaigned for a bond measure to write down debt accrued by profligate spending of Davis and his cohorts in the California legislature. The measure passed but did the Governor restrain future spending? Did he cut spending even with unprecedented and one time uber California tax receipts? NOPERS…….
Now, he proposes a massive infrastructure bond.
TAX AND SPEND – SPEND AND TAX…………..
He arrives at an early marker in the campaign Friday — a keynote speech at the state Republican Party winter convention — with conservatives openly questioning why they should support him.
Is he the governor who sought new power to choke off state spending in 2005, or the one who this year called for record borrowing and submitted a budget that doles out $6 billion more than the state will collect in taxes?
“When you look at the gyrations in his policies, it appears he’s plagued by an absence of core values,” said longtime Republican strategist Arnold Steinberg. “He comes across as a caricature, where energy and enthusiasm are confused with core values.”
Flap has to agree with Arnie Steinberg. Arnold does not have core convictions or an ideology. He is a movie star who is used to pleasing folks to buy movie tickets or receive an autograph. A policy WONK he is NOT.
The California governor may survive this weekend’s California Republican convention in San Jose.
However, Schwarzenegger will be very very lucky to survive against Phil Angelides or Steve Westly in November.

Cox & Forkum: Toonophobia
Christopher Hitchens: Cartoon Debate: The case for mocking religion – [T]here is a strong case for saying that the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, and those who have reprinted its efforts out of solidarity, are affirming the right to criticize not merely Islam but religion in general. And the Bush administration has no business at all expressing an opinion on that. If it is to say anything, it is constitutionally obliged to uphold the right and no more. …

In the name of parody, we’ve taken quite a few liberties with other people’s cartoons. Freedom of Expression is too important for anyone to intimidate or bluster it away. And the United States has an obligation to guarantee this freedom to its people at home and abroad.
If Flap wants to criticise religion or be criticised for his religious beliefs then so be it. Our freedoms are what the American Founders promised and we will hold our government responsible to protect these freedoms.
