Dubai Ports World Watch: United Arab Emirates Company Agrees to Delay Ports Takeover
A cargo ship is unloaded at Maryland’s Port of Baltimore Thursday, Feb. 23, 2006. The imminent takeover of the Port of Baltimore by a company based in the Middle East, has prompted some Maryland lawmakers to wonder if there’s any way to stop it. Baltimore’s port is among half a dozen major U.S. seaports that would be taken over by a government-owned company in the United Arab Emirates. News of the takeover by Dubai Ports has raised calls from both parties for more oversight of port security, despite assurances from the White House that the change won’t pose a threat.
ASSociated Press: UAE Company Agrees to Delay Ports Takeover
A state-owned company in the United Arab Emirates volunteered late Thursday to delay part of its $6.8 billion takeover of most operations at six U.S. ports to give President Bush more time to convince skeptical members of Congress that the disputed deal poses no security risks.
Flap thinks a more thorough vetting of this issue may resolve any security concerns folks have with this company. Certainly the United States wishes to encourage outside/foreign investment (and even from Arab/Muslim countries) – so long as American security interests are not threatened.
The surprise announcement relieves some pressure from a standoff between President Bush a Congress controlled by his own party that had threatened to try to block the deal over concerns about the UAE’s purported ties to terrorism.
Under the offer coordinated with the White House, Dubai Ports World said it will agree not to exercise control or influence the management over U.S. ports pending further talks with the Bush administration and Congress. It did not indicate how long it will wait for these discussions to take place.
The company said it will move forward with other parts of the deal affecting the rest of the world.
“It is not only unreasonable but also impractical to suggest that the closing of this entire global transaction should be delayed,” Dubai Ports said in a statement.

Muhammad Caricature Watch: German Court Convicts Man for Insulting Islam
Reuters: German court convicts man for insulting Islam
A German court on Thursday convicted a businessman of insulting Islam by printing the word “Koran” on toilet paper and offering it to mosques.
The 61-year-old man, identified only as Manfred van H., was given a one-year jail sentence, suspended for five years, and ordered to complete 300 hours of community service, a district court in the western German town of Luedinghausen ruled.
As Flap said earlier today……….Was this prosecution to soften Muslim unhappiness in Germany with the publication of the Muhammad Caricatures?
Manfred van H. printed out sheets of toilet paper bearing the word “Koran” shortly after a group of Muslims carried out a series of bomb attacks in London in July 2005. He sent the paper to German television stations, magazines and some 15 mosques.
Prosecutors said that in an accompanying letter Manfred van H. called Islam’s holy book a “cookbook for terrorists.”
He also offered his toilet paper for sale on the Internet at a price of 4 euros ($4.76) per roll, saying the proceeds would go toward a “memorial to all the victims of Islamic terrorism.”
The maximum sentence for insulting religious beliefs under the German criminal code is three years in prison.
A Hate Crime?
BS……..
How about an image from Dr. Rusty Shackleford of a Koran in a toilet?

Muhammad Caricature Watch: The Vatican URGES Islamic Countries to Reciprocate by Showing More Tolerance toward Their Christian Minorities
Pope Benedict XVI during his weekly Wednesday general audience at the Vatican, February 22, 2006.
Reuters: Vatican to Muslims: practice what you preach
After backing calls by Muslims for respect for their religion in the Mohammad cartoons row, the
Vatican is now urging Islamic countries to reciprocate by showing more tolerance toward their Christian minorities.Roman Catholic leaders at first said Muslims were right to be outraged when Western newspapers reprinted Danish caricatures of the Prophet, including one with a bomb in his turban. Most Muslims consider any images of Mohammad to be blasphemous.
Well, the Roman Catholic leaders were wrong with their views on freedom of expression and the Muhammad Caricatures but are RIGHT with regards to religious TOLERANCE in many Islamic countries.
The FACTS:
Saudi Arabia bans all public expression of any non-Muslim religion and sometimes arrests Christians even for worshipping privately.
Pakistan allows churches to operate but its Islamic laws effectively deprive Christians of many rights.
Morocco is tolerant of other religions, but like all Muslim countries frowns on conversion from Islam to another faith.
Iraqi Christians say they were well treated under Saddam Hussein’s secular policies, but believers have been killed, churches burned and women forced to wear Muslim garb since Islamic groups gained sway after the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
And what the Roman Catholic Church desires is reciprocity……..
Reciprocity — allowing Christian minorities the same rights as Muslims generally have in Western countries, such as building houses of worship or practicing religion freely — is at the heart of Vatican diplomacy toward Muslim states.
Pope Benedict signaled his concern on Monday when he told the new Moroccan ambassador to the Vatican that peace can only be assured by “respect for the religious convictions and practices of others, in a reciprocal way in all societies.”
The Quotes:
“If we tell our people they have no right to offend, we have to tell the others they have no right to destroy us,” Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the Vatican’s Secretary of State (prime minister), told journalists in Rome.
“We must always stress our demand for reciprocity in political contacts with authorities in Islamic countries and, even more, in cultural contacts,” Foreign Minister Archbishop Giovanni Lajolo told the daily Corriere della Sera.
“Enough now with this turning the other cheek! It’s our duty to protect ourselves,” Monsignor Velasio De Paolis, secretary of the Vatican’s supreme court, thundered in the daily La Stampa. “The West has had relations with the Arab countries for half a century, mostly for oil, and has not been able to get the slightest concession on human rights,” he said.
Bishop Rino Fisichella, head of one of the Roman universities that train young priests from around the world, told Corriere della Sera the Vatican should speak out more.
“Let’s drop this diplomatic silence,” said the rector of the Pontifical Lateran University. “We should put pressure on international organizations to make the societies and states in majority Muslim countries face up to their responsibilities.”
And did the Islamic community REALLY think that Christians would take the murder of priests lightly – especially over Muhammad Caricatures?

Muhammad Caricature Watch: Malaysia Reprimands Newspaper for Lampoon Muhammad Caricature Cartoon
Reuters: Malaysia slaps newspaper in twist to cartoon row
Malaysia has reprimanded one of its biggest daily newspapers for printing a cartoon lampooning the global controversy over caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad.
The government’s move has fanned a hot debate in this mainly Muslim country about where to draw the line between press freedom and respect of religion, because this time it involves a newspaper closely aligned with mainstream Muslim opinion.
The English-language New Straits Times had defended its right this week to publish the cartoon, which featured a street artist offering “caricatures of Muhammad while you wait.”
But the government, a prominent voice in the Islamic world, felt it crossed the line and its internal security ministry had given the daily three days to explain itself, the New Straits Times said on its front page on Thursday.
“The ministry said the cartoon had breached the conditions of the newspaper’s publishing permit,” the paper said.
“It added that the sketch was inappropriate and could invite negative reactions in the country, especially among Muslims.”
Malaysia, led by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, an Islamic scholar, has banned the Danish newspaper cartoons at the heart of the row and has suspended the publishing licences of two newspapers for publishing some of them.
Everyday Flap is happy he lives in America with the United States Constitution with its Bill of Rights.
Can you imagine an America where newspapers, blogs or websites would be required to have a government “PERMIT?” And if you wrote something said government did not “LIKE” then the government could censure, intimidate, jail or otherwise force you to stop your inappropriate speech.
The offending cartoon published by the New Straits Times on Monday was one of the globally syndicated Non Sequitur series by Wiley Miller. In an editorial on Wednesday, the newspaper responded to complaints about the cartoon, saying the Prophet had not been depicted.
In the editorial, it asked rhetorically whether the complaints were politically motivated to cow the newspaper’s editors. “When the truth gets reported, some get hurt. The powerful ones will seek to protect themselves with whatever means at their disposal,” the editorial said without elaborating.
The controversy is the latest episode in a public spat between the newspaper and elements of the ruling party, which has objected to the New Straits Times’ reporting on sensitive issues of race and religion and its criticism of government policy.
No “FREE” press in Malaysia.
Now……..why has the American MSM for the large part refused to print the Muhammad Caricatures?
The Washington Post has A Failure of the Press
The American MSM has failed. But, the American blogopshere has NOT……..
Stay tuned……

Arnold Schwarzenegger Watch: New PPIC Poll Shows Schwarzenegger’s Republican Support Falling
San Jose Mercury News: Poll: Governor’s GOP support shrinking
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is losing the support of Republicans, according to a new poll released on the eve of the state Republican convention in San Jose at which conservative activists are expected to challenge his more moderate direction.
The Public Policy Institute of California Poll is here.
So, what is news here?
The Governor has been losing GOP support since the California Special Election and his decidely LEFTWARD tilt.
Flap cannot count but a few Republicans that ACTUALLY want Schwarzenegger re-elected. MOST are afraid of Phil Angelides. But, will this motivate the GOP troops to the polls in November?
Doubtful…..
The ONLY politician who wants Schwarzenegger to WIN is……………
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
Now, isn’t that a scarey prospect?

Iran Nuclear Watch: Iran President Ahmadinejad Blames United States and Israel for Iraqi Shiite Dome Destruction
Iraqis living in Iran chant slogans as they mourn during a rally at the Saint Masoumeh shrine in the holy city of Qom, 80 miles (130 kilometers) south of the capital Tehran, Iran, Thursday, Feb. 23, 2006, condemning Wednesday’s attack on a Shiite shrine in Samarra in Iraq. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad blamed the United States and Israel on Thursday for the destruction of a Shiite shrine’s golden dome in Iraq, saying it was the work of ‘defeated Zionists and occupiers.’
ASSociated Press: Iran: U.S., Israel Destroyed Iraqi Shrine
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad blamed the United States and Israel on Thursday for the destruction of a Shiite shrine’s golden dome in Iraq, saying it was the work of “defeated Zionists and occupiers.”
Speaking to a crowd of thousands on a tour of southwestern Iran, the president referred to the destruction of the Askariya mosque dome in Samarra on Wednesday, which the Iraqi government has blamed on insurgents.
“They invade the shrine and bomb there because they oppose God and justice,” Ahmadinejad said, referring to the U.S.-led multinational forces in Iraq.
“These passive activities are the acts of a group of defeated Zionists and occupiers who intended to hit our emotions,” he said in a speech that was broadcast on state television. Addressing the United States, he added: “You have to know that such an act will not save you from the anger of Muslim nations.”
There goes Ahmadinejad again………
Does the United States and Israel REALLY think they can negotiate a nuclear program deal with this religious and political FANATIC?
Flap handicaps a logistical cover for an impending regime change…..
