California Republican Party Convention Watch: McClintock ASKS for Unity to Help Schwarzenegger
Lt. Governor candidate and California State Senator Tom McClintock (L) and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, November 2005.
The California Republican Party on Saturday sought to defuse criticism of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and rally support from a divided membership as it struggled for unity at the start of a pivotal election year.
At stake, they were told, are a second term for Schwarzenegger and whether the party can build on the momentum of the 2003 recall election that brought him to power.
“What do you think are greater — the differences among us as Republicans or the differences between us and the Democrats?” state Sen. Tom McClintock, a candidate for lieutenant governor, told hundreds of members attending the GOP’s winter convention. “This is the election that will decide whether the recall was a fleeting curiosity or whether it was an historic turning point.”
Schwarzenegger’s poll numbers are dismal among the GOP and now he NEEDS McClintock to FLACK for him?
How about if the Governor enacted policies that reflected Republican core ideals.
Is this asking too much?
“I don’t agree with the governor on everything, but I still support him,” McClintock said to a packed convention hall, a day after Schwarzenegger addressed the convention and told party members that they share common goals.
McClintock urged the GOP to show a “solid and steadfast commitment” to the party’s principles and the direction set by Schwarzenegger.
Everyone knows that McClintock has always been a poor political fundraiser. In fact, he has had few jobs outside of government that qualify him for higher office (much like his Ventura County chort, California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Jack O’Connell) and the donors know this. With Schwarzenegger he has found a willing “BANK” for his Lt. Governor race.
This display by Tom really is quite sad and pathetic.
And not everyone is buying the McClintock spin……
Some of those who have led the criticism of Schwarzenegger remained unconvinced.
Republican candidates for statewide office traditionally need at least 80 percent of the party vote to win, and at this point Schwarzenegger “doesn’t have that,” said Michael Spence, who heads the California Republican Assembly, a conservative wing of the party.
Regarding Schwarzenegger’s appeal for unity, he said, “I don’t care what he says at this point. I care about what he does.”
Will the call for UNITY ignite the GOP base to turn-out and vote for Arnold in November?
Doubtful……
Stay tuned…….

John Bolton Watch: United Nations is Hobbled “By Bad Management, by Sex and Corruption”
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton speaks to an audience during a symposium at Columbia Law School in New York February 25, 2006.
ASSociated Press: Bolton Blasts U.N. ‘Sex and Corruption’
The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations said Saturday that the world body is hobbled “by bad management, by sex and corruption” and a lack of confidence in its ability to carry out missions.
John Bolton also criticized the U.N.’s budget, noting that two-thirds of members pay only 20 percent of the cost.
“We find an organization that is deeply troubled by bad management, by sex and corruption and by a growing lack of confidence in its ability to carry out missions that are given to them,” Bolton told an audience at a Columbia Law School symposium held by the Federalist Society, a conservative law organization.
This is long overdue criticism of the United Nations. Is it well deserved?
You betcha…….
The Oil for Food program and sex scandals regarding U.N. Peacekeepers were way over the line of propriety.
And what about Iran?
Bolton on Saturday also described the U.N. as inept for not being able to stop Iran’s nuclear development and “devaluing the IAEA,” the International Atomic Energy Agency.
“Through all of this, the U.S. has been encouraged by Europe to pursue action through the U.N.,” Bolton said, adding that patience of the administration was wearing thin.

Iran Nuclear Watch: Iran WILL Retaliate Against Israel Nuclear Facility
Israel’s Dimona nuclear reactor site
Haaretz: Iranian advisor: We’ll strike Dimona in response to U.S. attack
If the United States launches an attack on Iran, the Islamic republic will retaliate with a military strike on Israel’s main nuclear facility, an advisor to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said.
The advisor, Dr. Abasi, said Tehran would respond to an American attack with strikes on the Dimona nuclear reactor and other strategic Israeli sites such as the port city of Haifa and the Zakhariya area.
Haifa is also home to a large concentration of chemical factories and oil refineries.
And Israel would then drop a nuclear weapon on Tehran…….
Winds of War bluster…….

Rob Reiner Watch: Taking a “LEAVE” from First 5 California Children and Families Commission FLAP
Reiner stumps for preschool initiative / Prop. 82 would tax wealthy to finance statewide program.
Los Angeles Times: Reiner Takes a Leave From Panel on Children
Facing pressure from legislators and others, producer Rob Reiner said Friday he is taking a leave as chairman of a state commission that spent $23 million for ads touting the value of early education while he is promoting a statewide preschool initiative.
Reiner took the action in a letter addressed to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. The leave takes effect immediately and will last until June 7, the day after voters decide the fate of Proposition 82, a Reiner-backed initiative to raise taxes on wealthy Californians to pay for preschool for all 4-year-olds.

AP: Russia: IAEA Can Still Solve Iran Dispute
Russia’s top nuclear official expressed confidence Saturday that the U.N. atomic watchdog agency still could resolve the international standoff over Iran’s program, Russian news agencies reported.
Sergei Kiriyenko, head of the state atomic energy agency, said resolving the persistent questions about the intent of Iran’s nuclear program “within the framework of the IAEA is absolutely realistic,” Russian news agencies reported.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Watch: A History of BOLDNESS
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger gives a thumbs-up as he addresses the California Republican Party winter convention in San Jose, Calif., on Friday, Feb. 24, 2006. Schwarzenegger said he will continue to push for government reforms but called on skeptical members of his own party to stop fighting and start leading.
Los Angeles Times: Gov. Tries to Soothe GOP Discontent
At the opening of the state party convention, Schwarzenegger touts his conservative side and boldness. His pitches win over some.Seeking to calm an uprising among conservatives, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger began sketching a rationale for his reelection for fellow Republicans on Friday by portraying himself as a bold leader who can rise above partisan squabbling to meet California’s critical needs.
The Governor understands that with California Republican registration at 35 % that he must appease the GOP activists while appealing to moderate voters. Arnold has never been a conservative and it is obvious that he is ill at ease speaking before this conservative GOP constituency.
The governor reminded 650 Republicans of the times he has stuck to a conservative line: slashing the car tax, rejecting calls for higher income taxes, blocking a move to grant driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants. But in a hotel ballroom dinner speech opening the state party’s weekend convention, Schwarzenegger also confronted conservative outrage at his vast new public-works spending proposal, arguing to delegates that it fits Republican traditions dating to the Civil War.
Schwarzenegger is laughable at citing the car tax and driver’s licenses for illegals as his conservative achievements. He would NEVER have been able to RECALL Gray Davis if he did not impose Davis’s illegal resumption of this punitive tax. Likewise, in his veto statement Arnold hedged on the rationale for NOT granting illegal aliens driver’s licenses.
And comparing himself to Lincoln and the Civil War? Who is his speech writer?
“We Republicans have a history of boldness,” Schwarzenegger said in an address punctuated by frequent cheers and applause. “I love that. Abraham Lincoln struck down slavery. Teddy Roosevelt fathered the environmental movement. Dwight D. Eisenhower built the interstate highway. And Ronald Reagan tore down the wall and defeated communism.
“This is a time in California’s history that calls for similar boldness.”
Schwarzenegger, you are NO Lincoln, Roosevelt, Eisenhower or Reagan. And your infrastructure bonding plan to enslave California taxpayers for decades is comparable to the interstate highway program?
How laughable is this?
The Governor’s 16 minute speech will do nothing to buttress him in polls with GOP voters.
Flap handicaps MOST California Republicans will stay home this fall.
