Iran Watch: Iran Bans The Economist Over “Persian” Gulf Map

ASSociated Press: Iran Bans the Economist Over Gulf Map

Iran has banned The Economist magazine for describing the Persian Gulf as merely “the Gulf” in a map published in the latest edition, state television reported Wednesday.

It is the second time in two years that Iran has banned such an international publication for failing to use the term “Persian Gulf” in a map. In 2004, it banned the National Geographic atlas when a new edition appeared with the term “Arabian Gulf” in parentheses beside the more commonly used Persian Gulf.

Tehran believes in aggressively defending the use of the historical term Persian Gulf. It regards the name Arabian Gulf, used by some, as a name dreamed up by Arab nationalists.

While Iran dominates the eastern side of the waterway, the western shores are held by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other countries.

State television reported late Wednesday that the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance had banned the importation and distribution of current and future editions of The Economist. The ban would only be lifted when the journal used “Persian Gulf,” the ministry was quoted as saying.

In London, where The Economist is published, the magazine said it would stand its ground.

“We’ve used ‘the Gulf’ for a long time, and we have no intention of changing it at the moment,” a spokeswoman for The Economist said, speaking on condition of anonymity in keeping with the magazine’s policy.

And the United States is going to negotiate nuclear issues with this closed minded moronic society?

I would hate to see what they would ban if they were angry……

Senator Joe Lieberman Watch: Independent Candidacy this Fall?

    Ned Lamont, Sen. Joe Lieberman

ASSociated Press: Lieberman weighs re-election bid options

Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman, warily watching his primary challenger advance in the polls, must soon decide whether to start collecting signatures for a possible independent bid this November.

Lieberman’s campaign contends that it’s focused only on winning the Aug. 8 primary, but the Democrat has not ruled out petitioning his way onto the November ballot as part of a backup plan to secure a fourth term in the Senate.

“I am not going to close out any options,” the senator recently told reporters.

Lieberman’s spokeswoman, Marion Steinfels, said he is “already the party’s endorsed candidate and on Aug. 8 he will win the primary, the Democratic primary.”

Lieberman has until Aug. 9 — the day after the Democratic primary — to collect 7,500 signatures from registered voters to gain a spot on the ballot as an unaffiliated candidate.

But any effort to gather signatures before the primary would be a sign of weakness, indicating that Lieberman, the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2000, fears that he could lose to businessman Ned Lamont. The effort also would rile Democrats who already question Lieberman’s party loyalty and his perceived closeness to
    President Bush.

    Forget about it Senator.

The LEFTY Dimrats in your state want a KOS KID Lefty not an independent Senator but voters will see through this sham.
However, maybe with Ned Lamont, the GOP could pick up the seat……

    Nahhhhhhhh

According to a recent Quinnipiac University Poll, 57 percent of registered Democrats in Connecticut said they would vote for Lieberman, compared to 32 percent for Lamont. A month ago, Lieberman drew 65 percent to Lamont’s 19 percent.

The poll found that if Lieberman runs as an independent, he would win with 56 percent of the vote, compared to 18 percent for Lamont and 8 percent for Republican Alan Schlesinger. Lieberman enjoys higher ratings among Republicans and unaffiliated voters than Democrats, the poll found. Unaffiliated voters are the state’s largest bloc of voters, followed by Democrats and then Republicans.

Flap handicaps a Lieberman win but it will be a nasty primary race. A portent for Hillary?

    Stay tuned…….

Los Angeles Times Watch: Up For Sale?

Chicago Tribune: Local Moguls Express Interest in Buying L.A. Times

Local investors express interest in bidding for the Tribune Co. paper amid a boardroom rift.

Could the Los Angeles Times once again be up for sale?

That question is on the minds of several of the city’s richest businessmen, who reaffirmed this week their interest in bidding for the country’s fourth-largest daily newspaper.

Billionaire investor Ron Burkle, former Olympics organizer and Major League Baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth and philanthropist Eli Broad have indicated in recent interviews or in comments to others that they would like to buy The Times or see it in local hands.

“The L.A. Times is a world-class brand,” Ueberroth, a financier and former travel entrepreneur, said in an interview this week. “We’re always attracted to quality brands.”

Though analysts estimate that The Times could sell for about $1 billion, Publisher Jeff Johnson said the paper was not for sale. With about $1 billion in annual sales, the paper accounts for about 18% of Tribune’s revenue and about 17% of operating profit.

    Los Angeles can only hope.

The direction of this world renown and Pulitzer Prize winning newspaper has been down ever since purchased by the Tribune Company. The Los Angeles Times needs new management, new technology and new thinking of media in the 21st century.

And the Chandler Family shareholders of the Tribune Company are not pleased either.

Reuters: Tribune investor urges split or sale of company

Tribune Co.’s (NYSE:TRBnews) second-largest shareholder urged the publisher and broadcaster to break itself up by the end of the year or consider a sale of the entire company, calling its media strategy a failure, according to a filing released on Wednesday.

The Chandler Trusts, which own about 12 percent of Tribune’s shares, said in a filing with the
U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that the company “must find a way to separate the newspaper business from television broadcasting.”

In a letter addressed to the Tribune board of directors, the Chandler Trusts said that the company had not achieved its aims of boosting profits by owning complementary media outlets in major U.S. markets. They expressed fears the future would be no different unless it changes course.

“This strategy has failed,” said the Chandler Trusts, which represents the Chandler family.

The Chandlers said the company should consider a tax-free spinoff as the most effective way to accomplish the split. It said Tribune’s board has been considering such a move for “many months” but has taken no action.

Three Tribune board members representing the Chandler Trusts signed the letter. The Chandler family took a stake in Tribune as part of its agreement to sell the Times-Mirror Co., and its flagship Los Angeles Times newspaper, to Tribune for $8.3 billion in 2000.

Local control of the Los Angeles Times would be in the best interests of the residents of southern California.

Will there be enough circulation left upon which to begin a revitalization of the property?

Probably with aggressive new management ………

Illegal Immigration Watch: Operation Return to Sender

Members of a team from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency attempt to gain entrance to an apartment building in search of a suspect during a sweep to capture illegal aliens with a criminal record in the Boston area, early Wednesday morning, June 14, 2006, in Everett, Mass. More than 2,100 illegal immigrants have been arrested since the nationwide raid began May 26.

ASSociated Press: ICE Arrests About 2,000 Illegal Immigrants

A swarm of federal immigration agents sped silently, headlights off, down a Boston side street early Wednesday and surrounded an apartment house.

“Police! Policia! Police!” yelled Daniel Monico, a deportation officer, holding his badge to a window where someone had pulled back the curtain. “Open the door!”

Moments later, agents led a dazed-looking Jose Ferreira Da Silva, 35, out in handcuffs. The Brazilian had been arrested in 2002 and deported, but had slipped back into the country. He now faces up to 20 years in prison.

In a blitz that began May 26, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has arrested nearly 2,100 illegal immigrants across the country. Officials said the raids are aimed at child molesters, gang members and other violent criminals, as well as people like Da Silva who sneaked back into the country after a judge threw them out.

The crackdown is called Operation Return to Sender.

“This sends a message,” said Monico, standing outside the gray Victorian apartment where Da Silva had been hiding. “When we deport you, we’re serious.”

Flap wish he could beleive the new found enforcement by ICE is serious. But, Flap remains cynical and knows this is show for an amnesty-laden comprehensive immigration bill.

The President has had six years to get tough and he has NOT.

Secure the border first and then enforce the existing immigration laws. Going after the egregious criminal illegal aliens is a matter of course and SHOULD have been done years ago.

“This is a massive operation,” said Marc Raimondi, a spokesman for immigration enforcement or ICE, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security. “We are watching the country’s borders from the inside.”

In New England, officials said the sweeps have caught more than 150, including 75 who had come back after being deported.

ICE has a network of 35 fugitive teams across the country. The 2006 budget increased that number to 52, and the Bush administration is pushing for 70 by 2007.

The challenge, agents said, is staggering.

There are more than 500,000 “fugitive aliens” who have been deported by judges and either slipped back into the country or never left. There is often a disconnect between local and state prisons and the federal government that allows illegal immigrants to serve time and be released without being transferred to federal officials for deportation.

The feds have to build walls, fencing, surveillance projects and have the border secured FIRST.

Enforcement at this stage without border security is like spitting in the wind – it comes right back at you.

Mr. President you promised enhanced border security with the deployment of the National Guard.

Honor your committment and get some more National Guard troops down there on the Mexican border.

Remember there are four conditions prior to any discussion of a comprehensive immigration reform bill:

    1. Send the National Guard to the border but allow them to bolster enforcement until more border patrol agents are trained and ON THE JOB.

    2. Support legislation in the Congress to fund the training and deployment of additional border agents/officers. Ony when these officers are deployed in sufficient numbers to deter illegal immigration should the National Guard be redeployed away from the border.

    3. Support legislation to fund and build physical barriers and walls to physically impede the flow of illegal aliens coming across the border. “Virtual” fencing is NOT acceptable alone. There must be REAL physical impediments to the flow of people.

    4. Enforce existing immigration laws against employers. Fine them big, jail corporate leaders, if you have must. America must be freed from the addiction of cheap Mexican and illegal labor.

Jose Ignacio Ferreira DaSilva from Brazil is taken into custody by members of a team from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency during a sweep to capture illegal aliens with a criminal record in the Boston, Tuesday, June 13, 2006, in Boston. More than 2,100 illegal immigrants have been arrested since the nationwide raid began May 26. Da Silva, 35, had been arrested in 2002 and deported, but had slipped back into the country. He now faces up to 20 years in prison.

Iran Nuclear Watch: Ahmadinejad Seeks Russian and Chinese Support for Iran Nuclear Program

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, right, is welcomed by a Chinese official on his arrival at Shanghai’s Pudong airport Wednesday June 14, 2006. Ahmadinejad arrived to attend Thursday’s summit of the six-nation Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Ahmadinejad will make a speech at the security summit and his presence is helping to draw unprecedented attention to the annual gathering of the Chinese and Russian-dominated grouping, which also includes Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

ASSociated Press: Ahmadinejad seeks Chinese, Russian support

Iran’s hard-line president is doing more than just attending an Asian security summit in China: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad seeks to gain Russian and Chinese support at a critical moment for his country’s nuclear program.

He also aims to prove that his country is not isolated, despite U.S. claims to the contrary.

Past trips to Asia have been a chance for Ahmadinejad to tap into anti-U.S. sentiment and tout himself as a leader who is standing up to Washington. Last month, he was cheered by Indonesian students and by a crowd shouting “Fight America! Fight Israel!” outside a Jakarta mosque where he performed prayers.

His visit to China, which began Wednesday, will likely be more dedicated to intense diplomacy. Ahmadinejad is expected to hold separate meetings with his Chinese and Russian counterparts,
Hu Jintao and Vladimir Putin, on the sidelines of the regional summit in Shanghai.

Of course, Ahmadinejad is going to cozy up to his buddies.

But, did the United States EVER have any illusion that Iran would favorably accept the G-6 proposal?

    NO

Will Iran attempt to recover from the trap laid out for itself by Condoleezza Rice?

You bet….by utilizing Russia and China as intermediaries.

Russia and China would love to poke a finger in the eye of the United States – as the former Communist but still totalitarian states have for decades.

Iran’s nuclear program of uranium enrichment will ONLY be ended by the United States and Israel. The Big 6 proposal will be rejected by Iran after its numerous attempts to obfuscate and delay an answer.

The deadline is mid-July at the G-8 summit.

Illegal Immigration Watch: Federal Immigration Agents Raid Dulles International Airport

Washington Post: Immigration Agents Raid Dulles Airport

Federal immigration agents this morning raided a construction site at Dulles International Airport, and several dozen workers were arrested, officials and witnesses said.

The raid was conducted by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to ICE spokesman Dean Boyd. He said this morning that officials did not yet have an exact number of arrests.

But a witness at Dulles said about 60 people, most appearing to be Latinos, were stopped at the gate as they stepped onto airport property. They were led away in handcuffs and put in unmarked vans, the witness said.

The raid began about 7 a.m., and Customs agents were finished about 9:30 a.m.

The workers were employed by a number of construction companies involved in a major expansion of the airport. Among the projects are road improvements, an expansion of one Dulles concourse, construction of a new traffic control tower and an automated airport train system, according to the airport’s Web site.

    This is about DAMN time.

The federal government MUST secure our borders and enforce the existing immigration laws. Could one of these illegal aliens be an Al Qaeda operative wishing to plant an IED at Dulles?

    Possible.

It ONLY has to happen once.

The fact is we do not know who is coming across the Mexican or Canadian border. And this is Homeland Security?

    NOT!

Global War on Terror Watch: Gitmo Conditions HUMANE

Abdul Jabar Sabhet, third from left, the head of an Afghan delegation who had gone to see the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba, holds a press conference with his delegation members in Kabul, Afghanistan on Wednesday, June 14, 2006. The delegation returning from a 10-day visit to Guantanamo Bay said Wednesday that prison conditions there were ‘humane.’

ASSociated Press: Afghans declare Gitmo conditions ‘humane’

An Afghan delegation returning from a 10-day visit to the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay said Wednesday that prison conditions there were “humane.”

The head of the delegation, Abdul Jabar Sabhet of the Interior Ministry, said the delegation was given the chance to speak freely with all 96 Afghan prisoners about their living conditions. Sabhet said there were “only one or two” complaints.

“Conditions of the jail was humane. There were rumors in this country about that. It was wrong. What we have seen was OK,” he said.

But, the MSM and Left Morons like Jimmy Carter will harp on the three suicides that occurred five days ago.

They do not want to portray America as a kind, just and fair nation becasue their agenda is to belittle and hurt the United States for their own power needs.

Sabhet’s assessment comes five days after the suicides of three detainees at the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba.

He said more than half of the Afghan prisoners were expected to be transferred soon, though he didn’t have an exact date.

“We ensure the Afghan people that Afghan prisoners will soon return to our country,” he said.

Last August, the United States and the Afghan government announced an agreement to send Afghans held at the detention center and elsewhere back to their country. No date was specified at the time.

Those expected to be released soon were accused of less serious crimes, Sabhet said.

But, better to remove these terrorists from the theater of combat then release them to harm Americans again.

This is a WAR ON TERROR but America treats its enemy combatants HUMANELY.

Captain Ed has Afghan Delegation: Gitmo ‘Humane’

In fact, this shows that the US has operated the Guantanamo facility in an orderly and humane manner. Even when given the opportunity to speak to the Afghan government, 96 inmates only voiced “one or two” complaints. The delegation came looking for inhumane conditions, by their own admission, but found nothing.

How many outlets do you think will carry this wire report?

    Probably not many, Captain Ed.

But, they certainly WILL carry Jimmy Carter every time he BASHES America.

Iran Nuclear Watch: Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki – Big 6 Proposal “A Step Forward”

Iran’s foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki, left, shake hands with his Spanish counterpart Miguel Angel Moratinos, during a meeting at the Santa Cruz Palace, in Madrid, Wednesday, June 14, 2006. Mottaki said Wednesday that his country wants to resolve a growing standoff with the West over its nuclear program, and described as ‘a step forward’ an offer of incentives designed to persuade Tehran to suspend uranium enrichment. ‘We consider it a step forward to present this package of incentives,’ Mottaki said as he arrived at Madrid airport for talks with his Spanish counterpart. He was referring to a proposal devised by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany that was presented to Tehran last week.

Reuters: Iran sees nuclear proposal as step forward: Spain

Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said nuclear incentive proposals made by the world’s major powers were “a step forward,” the Spanish government said on Wednesday after the minister met Spanish foreign minister Miguel Angel Moratinos.

Mottaki said Iran’s right to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes must be compatible with setting adequate guarantees to overcome the concerns of the international community, the statement added.

“He recognized the value of the proposal presented by (EU) High Representative (Javier) Solana as a step forward in the negotiation process and stressed the interest with which Iranian authorities were studying it,” it said.

Solana, the EU’s foreign policy chief, handed over on June 6 a batch of trade, technological and security incentives for Iran to halt nuclear fuel work in Tehran.

Mottaki is “slow playing” the negotiations while President Ahmadinejad trolls for support from Russia and China. He is attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit and will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Hu Jintao.

The deadline for Iran is the G-8 Summit in mid-July, irrespective to what Iran blusters.

So, there is plenty of time for posturing……

Election 2006 Watch: Senator Jim Talent Campaign Reports Death Threat From Claire McCaskill Blog

Claire McCaskill speaks to audience in Marshall, Missouri.

ASSociated Press: Talent campaign reports threat from Web posting

Missouri Sen. Jim Talent’s campaign on Tuesday contacted the U.S. Capitol Police to report a threatening remark made against the Republican senator by an unidentified person on his opponent’s campaign Web log.

The comment was first posted on June 9, but Talent’s campaign manager, Gregg Keller, said he did not see it until Tuesday.

Adrianne Marsh, a spokeswoman for Democratic Senate candidate Claire McCaskill, said the posting was immediately removed from McCaskill’s blog Tuesday night as soon as the campaign was made aware of it.

The comment accused Talent of “bringing out the guns” in response to McCaskill’s poll numbers and said “we need to respond with a little Dick Cheney justice, shoot him in the face, but don’t kill ’em just marr (sic) that pretty boy face of his.”

What is with these “UNHINGED” Left-Wing Nutters?

    McCaskill’s blog is here.

What is more troubling is that the comment was posted on June 9th and it was not immediately removed but taken down when it was called to the McCaskill campaign’s attention.

Marsh said the campaign was trying to trace the source of the comments. She said the general public can no longer post comments to McCaskill’s blog without registering an account.

“The campaign does not endorse this language,” Marsh said. “We don’t even know how it was posted since it doesn’t even contain a handle to identify the writer.”

Perhaps the campaign should ENCOURAGE reasoned discourse instead of threatening babble.

Is this too much to ask?

    Probably.
