Dixie Chick Watch: Natalie Maines – “I Don’t See Why People Care About Patriotism.”

Dixie Chicks, from left, Emily Robison, Natalie Maines and Martie Maguire, perform on ABC’s ‘Good Morning America’ summer concert series in Bryant Park on May 26, 2006 in New York. While the Dixie Chicks’ record sales are soaring, tickets for their Accidents and Accusations Tour are failing to take flight in some cities. ‘I think before it’s said and done the entire tour will be, at the very least, reorganized,’ Ray Waddell, senior editor of touring for Billboard magazine, said Friday, June 9, 2006.

Telegraph.Co.UK: How the Chicks survived their scrap with Bush

When Maines made her comment on March 10 2003, 10 days before Operation Iraqi Freedom unleashed “shock and awe” over Baghdad, the Dixie Chicks were probably the biggest act in country music. Yet within days, their music vanished from the charts and the airwaves, apoplectic rednecks crushed piles of their CDs with tractors, and the FBI was feverishly monitoring death threats against the trio. It was the most heinous pop-star outrage since Ozzy Osbourne urinated on the Alamo.

“The reaction was as if Natalie had said ‘Death to the President’ or something,” says violinist and vocalist Maguire.

“It was the bullying and the scare factor,” shudders banjo and guitar player Robison. “It was like the McCarthy days, and it was almost like the country was unrecognisable.”

The level of debate can be gauged from the way Maines was compared to “Hanoi Jane” Fonda, who was photographed manning a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun at the height of the Vietnam war.

The Chicks can’t hide their disgust at the lack of support they received from other country performers. “A lot of artists cashed in on being against what we said or what we stood for because that was promoting their career, which was a horrible thing to do,” says Robison.

“A lot of pandering started going on, and you’d see soldiers and the American flag in every video. It became a sickening display of ultra-patriotism.”

“The entire country may disagree with me, but I don’t understand the necessity for patriotism,” Maines resumes, through gritted teeth. “Why do you have to be a patriot? About what? This land is our land? Why? You can like where you live and like your life, but as for loving the whole country… I don’t see why people care about patriotism.”

Well, cancel a few more American show dates.

Sony Music must be seriously evaluating the commercial viability of the Dixie chicks. Natalie Maines is simply a MORON who cannot keep her YAP shut.

She can sing but if she continues to “PISS” people off by questioning their love of their country and patriotism…..Say good Night Gracie on your career…….

And this certainly won’t help their air play or sales in Memphis or other Red State locations where they have cancelled concerts.

    Take That, Dixie Chicks

This just in from radio station 94.1 the Buzz: a press release stating that the station removed Dixie Chicks songs “NOT BECAUSE OF THEIR CONTROVERSIAL STANCE TOWARD THE PRESIDENT” (emphasis theirs). Rather, the girls got dumped because they removed the Memphis date on tour, even though they added more dates in Canada.

Michelle Malkin has DIXIE CHICKS QUESTION YOUR PATRIOTISM

Here are country singers who aren’t sickened by their country.

Support “ultra-patriotism” through Project Prayer Flag.

The Dixie Chicks arrive at a pre-Grammy party in Beverly Hills, February 7, 2006. The country music trio, still taking heat for criticizing President Bush, are weathering sluggish ticket sales in several cities for their upcoming U.S. tour, industry watchers reported on Thursday.

North Korea Watch: North Korea Denies Reported Plans to Test-Fire a Long-Range Missile Capable of Reaching the U.S. Mainland

A South Korean soldier seen here looking towards a Scud-B missile mock-up (L) in September 2004 at Seoul war museum. The United States and Japan have warned North Korea to drop plans for a long-range missile test, warning it would be “grave and provocative.”

Associated Press: N. Korea denies it’s about to test missile

The United States and Japan urged North Korea on Saturday not to proceed with reported plans to test-fire a long-range missile capable of reaching the U.S. mainland. But North Korean officials denied such preparations, the Kyodo News agency reported, citing an unidentified South Korean official.

U.S. Ambassador to Japan Thomas Schieffer and Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso met Saturday night amid mounting speculation the North could soon test a Taepodong-2 missile capable of reaching the United States with a light payload.

South Korean media reports said the North had loaded booster rockets onto a launch pad in preparation for the test.

After the meeting, Schieffer reiterated Washington’s stance that the test would be a dangerous act that would hurt North Korean interests. The North has been under a self-imposed moratorium on long-range missile tests since 1999.

U.S. Ambassador to Japan Thomas Scheiffer, left, gives a document to Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso prior to their meeting at Aso’s office in Tokyo Saturday, June 17, 2006. The two were to discuss ‘North Korea’s missile,’ said a ministry official on condition of anonymity citing policy. The meeting comes as Japanese and South Korean media reports said that North Korea loaded booster rockets onto a launch pad in preparation to test-fire a long-range missile that could reach as far as the U.S. mainland, with the launch expected as early as Sunday.

So, what is the United States response going to be? North Korea, unlike Iran, possesses nuclear weapons.

The Military Defense Agency has been busily preparing a missile defense for the United States, both land and sea based. Is it completed?

Doubtful, but probably adequate enough to deter a strike by the North Koreans provided it is made clear to Kim Jong-il that the United States would respond to ANY provocative nuclear act with its own nuclear strike against North Korea, including the acceptance of collateral casualities.

“We hope that the North Koreans will not take this provocative action. We hope that they will return to the six-party talks,” Schieffer said, referring to international talks aiming to get North Korea to give up its nuclear program.

Those talks — involving the United States, the two Koreas, China, Japan and Russia — have been stalled by a North Korean boycott.

A launch “will only isolate the North Koreans further from the rest of the international community,” he said.

Schieffer said Washington was working with allies on how to respond if North Korea goes ahead with the launch, but he refused to be specific, saying only that “all options are on the table.”

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said a North Korean missile launch would violate a moratorium on long-range missile tests declared in 1999 by North Korean leader Kim Jong Il.

“This would be yet another instance of North Korea violating the international commitments it has made,” she said.

Aso told reporters that the situation was “serious” and that North Korea had been warned not to fire the missile. “How we will respond depends on what North Korea does,” he said.

Would a miitary strike on North Korea be possible?

Possible – on North Korea’s nuclear facilities.

A U.S. government official told The Associated Press on Friday that a test of the Taepodong-2 may be imminent. The Washington official agreed to speak but only on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information.

South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo reported Saturday that North Korea also moved about 10 fuel tanks to the launch site in preparation for the test.

It said intelligence authorities from Seoul and Washington had made the assessment, based on satellite images, that the North had loaded booster rockets onto a launch pad and moved the fuel tanks close by. The paper quoted an unidentified high-level South Korean government official.

South Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman Choo Kyu-ho could not confirm the report.

Japan’s conservative Sankei Shimbun, citing government officials it did not name, said the Japanese government had dispatched two Aegis destroyers to the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean. Hidetsugu Iwamasa, a Japanese naval official, said he could not comment on the report, citing security concerns.

Would Japan use American made, ship based, anti-missiles to shoot down the North Korean, Taepodong-2.

You betcha and the hardware may be already on its way…….

    More than likely……

And what would the range of the newly modified Taepodong-2?

Well, America’s West Coast and most of the major European Capitals would now be within reach of a nuclear attack from North Korea.

    Stay tuned…….

California Election 2006 Watch: Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Refuses to Endorse Fellow Democrat California Treasurer Phil Angelides for Governor

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mrs. Villaraigosa, and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa at the Mayor’s inauguration, July 1, 2005.

Los Angeles Times: Tension Builds Between L.A. Mayor, Angelides

Villaraigosa declines to endorse the candidate, who’s refused to back takeover of school district.

Tension between Antonio Villaraigosa and Democratic gubernatorial nominee Phil Angelides surfaced Friday as the Los Angeles mayor declined to say whether he backed his own party’s candidate to unseat Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The rift between two of California’s top Democrats became clear just after they appeared with Magic Johnson to celebrate the opening of a Starbucks on Crenshaw Boulevard.

Why, of course. Should California Treasurer Phil Angelides win the governorship it freezes out Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa from running for governor for at least eight years. In this period of time, Villaraigosa may actually be held accountable for his governance of Los Angeles instead of being the poster child for the Hispanic National Caucus of the Democrat Party.

Minutes after Villaraigosa’s tepid remarks on his candidacy, Angelides refused to take a stand on Villaraigosa’s plan to take over the Los Angeles public schools.

The dual snubs were part of a broad conflict between the two Democrats.

Villaraigosa’s plan to REFORM “TAKE OVER” Los Angeles Schools is nothing but a power grab. Everyone on the LEFT and RIGHT knows this. The California Teachers Association who endorsed Angelides in his partisan primary race against California Controller Steve Westly hates the idea.

Why would Angelides wish to endorse this plan? For a few Latino votes delivered by Villaraigosa?

    Questionable

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, August 30, 2005.

Villaraigosa is torn between party loyalty and the potential rewards offered by his new alliance with the Republican governor. He plans to campaign with Schwarzenegger for bond measures on the November ballot that could offer Los Angeles billions of dollars for schools, housing and traffic relief. And the governor would decide where much of that bounty went.

Phil Angelides will get little help from Antonio Villarigosa this Fall. Will the Governator benefit?

You betcha – all the way to re-election.

In the meantime, the Mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom, also a potential Democrat governor candidate has been campaigning with Angelides.

On Monday, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, another potential candidate for governor, threw his support behind Angelides and campaigned with him at a North Beach health clinic. Newsom, highly popular in his city, has also offered to gather every Bay Area Democratic official in a room to urge them to work for Angelides’ election.

Newsom’s unabashed support only underscored the unusual nature of Villaraigosa’s reticence. Nearly all of California’s other top Democrats, including U.S. Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, supported Angelides during the primary.

Is Arnold practicing a little “DIVIDE AND CONQUER” with the Dims? Apparently so, and to the detriment of Phil Angelides.

Flap continues to handicap and easy re-election for Arnold, despite lack of enthusiam from his own party.

    Stay tuned…….
