Gov. Schwarzenegger made the correct  decision last week when he declined to deploy more National Guard troops to the  Mexican border. Sending additional California forces would unfairly burden the
state.

Because the administration’s plan for using the guard at the border only proposed a total of 6,000 troops, that would mean California would be lifting nearly half the burden for the country. And the additional soldiers would be watching the border  in other states, not in California.

The governor properly focused on the  need for the National Guard to be available in case of emergencies in California. The state  faces an ever-present danger of earthquakes, plus wildfires, floods and
mudslides at various times of the year. And while California has more than 20,000 troops in its National
Guard, including those deployed in Iraq, the California guard also has more area and people  to protect in a disaster-prone state.

Meantime, illegal immigration has spread  far beyond California, Arizona, New Mexico and  Texas. Many
states now have large undocumented work forces. And border security affects the  whole nation, not just the border  states. California has plenty of guard muscle, but  other states should be willing to lend some brawn to border enforcement, as well.

Arnold has NO coherent illegal immigration policy.
