Cindy Sheehan Watch: Sheehan Arrested in Washington AGAIN

Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan yells to fellow demonstrators as she is arrested outside of the White House in Washington, Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006.

AP: Peace mom Sheehan arrested in Washington

Activist Cindy Sheehan was arrested Wednesday as she led about 50 protesters to a White House gate Wednesday to deliver anti-war petitions she said were signed by 80,000 Americans.

The Berkeley, Calif., woman, whose son was killed in
Iraq more than two years ago, was arrested along with three other women on the sidewalk outside the White House gate, said Lt. Scott Fear, a U.S. Park Police spokesman. They were charged with interfering with a government function, he said.

Before she was arrested, she joined the protesters in hailing the outcome of Tuesday’s elections and chanting “Stop the War” outside the gate.

“It was taking too long for them to decide whether to accept them or not, so we just delivered them,” said Sheehan, who waited about 15 minutes with other protesters before tossing the petitions over the fence.

Not real smart to throw something over the White House fence. But, then again, who said you were smart, Cindy?

The petitions opposed use of military force to resolve the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program.

Sheehan, 49, and other grieving families met with Bush about two months after her son died, before reports of faulty prewar intelligence surfaced and caused her to speak out. She has tried repeatedly to speak with the president again, including a 26-day vigil last year outside Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas.

Wednesday’s protest came as Republicans lost control of the House and the White House announced the resignation of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

“He’s being offered as a sacrificial lamb,” Sheehan said.

You mean Rumsfeld is NOT enough? How can that be? Rummy was the Man who sent your son to his death – NOT!

Cindy stop stalking Bush – it is getting old and very PATHETIC.

Election 2006 Watch: James Webb Beats George Allen – Democrats Take Control of the United States Senate

    webbnovember8aweb

AP: Democrats Take Control of the Senate

Democrats wrested control of the Senate from Republicans Wednesday with an upset victory in Virginia, giving the party complete domination of Capitol Hill for the first time since 1994.

Jim Webb’s squeaker win over incumbent Sen. George Allen gave Democrats their 51st seat in the Senate, an astonishing turnabout at the hands of voters unhappy with Republican scandal and unabated violence in Iraq. Allen was the sixth Republican incumbent senator defeated in Tuesday’s elections.

The Senate breakdown will be 49-49-2 with the two independents voting with the Democrats.

Just as Flap predicted – A DEBACLE

The Senate had teetered at 50 Democrats, 49 Republicans for most of Wednesday, with Virginia hanging in the balance. Webb’s victory ended Republican hopes of eking out a 50-50 split, with Vice President Dick Cheney wielding tie-breaking authority.

The Associated Press contacted election officials in all 134 localities where voting occurred, obtaining updated numbers Wednesday. About half the localities said they had completed their postelection canvassing and nearly all had counted outstanding absentees. Most were expected to be finished by Friday.

The new AP count showed Webb with 1,172,538 votes and Allen with 1,165,302, a difference of 7,236. Virginia has had two statewide vote recounts in modern history, but both resulted in vote changes of no more than a few hundred votes.

An adviser to Allen, speaking on condition of anonymity because his boss had not formally decided to end the campaign, said the senator wanted to wait until most of canvassing was completed before announcing his decision, possibly as early as Thursday evening.

The adviser said that Allen was disinclined to request a recount if the final vote spread was similar to that of election night.

The victory puts Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., in line to become Senate majority leader. He has led the Democrats since Tom Daschle, D-S.D., was defeated two years ago.

The Macaca Flap killed George Allen and the GOP’s control of the United States Senate.

This Democrat Party majority may not be so easy to defend in 2008 – where the attention now goes.

The Dems up for re-election in ’08 include Max Baucus in Montana, Tim Johnson in South Dakota, Mary Landrieu in Louisiana, Mark Pryor in Arkansas, Tom Harkin in Iowa, and Jay Rockefeller in West Virginia. (Other “safe” Democrats include Slow Joe Biden, Dick Durbin, Carl Levin, John Kerry, Frank Lautenber, and Rhode Island’s Jack Reed.) Baucus, Johnson, Landrieu, Pryor, Harkin and Rockefeller all must have begun worrying about the burden they will have to carry in ’08. The first order of business for the GOP will be recruitment of great challengers for these races.

Time to get busy and recruit some good candidates.

Any bets that James Webb will be Hillary’s vice presidential running mate in 2008?

    Stay tuned….

Election 2006 Watch: John Tester Wins Montana Senate Seat

    burnsnovember8aweb

Sen. Conrad Burns, R-Mont., walks out of the Billings Hotel and Convention Center in Billings, Mont., Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006. Incumbent Sen. Burns was locked in the fight of his political life early Wednesday, trailing Democrat Jon Tester by fewer than 2,000 votes as the GOP tried to hang on to control of the Senate.

AP: Democrat wins Montana seat, ties Senate

Republican Sen. Conrad Burns lost his job in a squeaker of a race Wednesday, thrust from office due to his own gaffes, his ties to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff and a determined campaign by Democrat Jon Tester, a farmer.

Tester’s win gave Democrats at least half the U.S. Senate, but the party still needed a victory in a tight Virginia race to gain control.

Burns, 71, first elected in 1988 as a folksy, backslapping outsider, has been under siege because of his ties to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff and because of his own gaffes — including an incident in which he cursed at firefighters.

With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Tester had 198,032 votes, or 49.1 percent, to Burns’ 194,904 votes, or 48.3 percent.

Put a fork in Conrad Burns – He’s done!

Also put a fork in the GOP’s chances to hold control of the United States Senate. There will be a recount in Virigina but it will be a long shot at best.

Senate breakdown will be 49-49-2 with the two independents voting with the Democrats.

Just as Flap predicted – A DEBACLE

Iraq War Watch: Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld to RESIGN

    rumsfeldnovember8aweb

US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld leaves the stage after an October 2006 briefing at the Pentagon. Rumsfeld stayed out of sight after a massive Republican defeat in legislative elections seen as a vote for a change of course in Iraq.

AP: GOP says Rumsfeld is stepping down

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, architect of an unpopular war in Iraq, intends to resign after six stormy years at the Pentagon, Republican officials said Wednesday.

Word came a day after the Democratic gains in the election, in which Rumsfeld was a focus of much of the criticism of the Iraq war. Officials said Robert Gates, former head of the CIA, would replace Rumsfeld.

If Rumsfeld and Hastert had been sent packing by the President and GOP in August the electoral losses would have been less.

Now, AFTER loss of the House and probably the Senate Bush throws “Rummy” over the side.

    Should make a great book.

California Election 2006 Watch: California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger Wins Re-election

    arnoldnovember8dweb

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger kisses his wife Maria Shriver after his re-election, in Beverly Hills. November 7, 2006.

Reuters: Schwarzenegger gains landslide California win

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger won re-election by a landslide after distancing himself from fellow Republican President George W. Bush and taking a moderate stance, results on Wednesday showed.

The former Hollywood star first elected three years ago in an unprecedented recall vote beat his Democratic opponent, State Treasurer Phil Angelides, by 17 points with 99.6 percent of Tuesday’s vote counted.

“What a fantastic evening; I love doing sequels,” Schwarzenegger told supporters in Beverly Hills. “But this without any doubt is my favorite sequel.”

The star of the “Terminator” films scrapped a confrontational style that served him well as a champion bodybuilder and in movies but led to a complete defeat in a special initiative election last year.

A humbled Schwarzenegger, 59, turned on his charm, no longer taunted Democratic legislators as “girlie men” and backed a series of bipartisan laws, including reducing the state’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Arnold made “NICE” and was rewarded by his re-election.

    Will it continue?

    Perhaps

But, now the Governator actually has to GOVERN…..

    Stay tuned…….
