Gwyneth Paltrow Watch: “I’m Proud to Be American”

    paltrowdecember4aweb

U.S. actress Gwyneth Paltrow blows a kiss to her fans as she attends the shooting of an MTV live show in Rome’s Pincio terrace November 10, 2004. Paltrow insisted on Monday that contrary to a recent article in a European newspaper, she feels ‘proud to be American’ and would never compare her homeland unfavorably to Britain.

Reuters: Gwyneth Paltrow denies disparaging America

Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow insisted on Monday that contrary to a recent article in a European newspaper, she feels “proud to be American” and would never compare her homeland unfavorably to Britain.

In a statement issued through People magazine’s Web site, Paltrow said she was “deeply upset” by remarks attributed to her by the Portuguese newspaper Diario de Noticias, which quoted the actress as saying: “The British are much more intelligent and civilized than the Americans.”

“I never, ever would have said that,” said Paltrow, 34, who is married to British rock star
Chris Martin, the lead singer of Coldplay, and resides part time with him and their two children in London.

Well, what did Gwyeth say and when did she say it? Did the Portugese press make up the quotes?

Here is what she said in Britain January 27th of this year:

“I love the English way, which is not as capitalistic as it is in America. People don’t talk about work and money; they talk about interesting things at dinner parties. I like living here because I don’t tap into the bad side of American psychology, which is ‘I’m not achieving enough, I’m not making enough, I’m not at the top of the pile.’ It’s just kind of like, I am.”

And what Gwyneth said to the Canadian press September 14, 2005:

    “…I feel like we’re really in trouble. I just had a baby and thought, ‘I don’t want to live there.’(in the United States). “Bush’s anti-environment, pro-war policies are a dis. . . .”.

So, it is OK to be against President Bush (she supported John Kerry in 2004) and then let it slip (when no one but foreign press are watching) that you dislike America(ns) or does Gwyneth fear a Dixie Chick moment?

Flap thinks she will desperately try to avoid the Natalie Maines treatment.

But, I don’t think we have heard the end of this story.

“I feel so lucky to be American,” she said. “I feel so proud to be American.”

Paltrow denies giving an interview to the Portuguese daily, though she did speak at a news conference in Spanish, according to People.

“This is what I said,” Paltrow explained. “I said that Europe is a much older culture, and there’s a difference. I always say in America, people live to work, and in Europe, people work to live. There are positives in both.”

She added: “Obviously, I need to go back to seventh-grade Spanish.”

Face saving or Career saving speech?

Perhaps Gwyneth should SHUT UP and ACT.

    Stay tuned………

Senator Joe Biden Watch: Biden Wows the GOP in South Carolina

    bidendecember4cweb

Democratic presidential hopeful Sen., Joe Biden, center, D-Mass., gets advise from New Hampshire state Sen. Sylvia Larson in this July 22, 2006, file photo. Presidential hopefuls are setting the ground game seeking political activist to help them win the nation’s first presidential primary and boost their political campaign.

The State (Via Hugh Hewitt): Biden charms local GOP

It was unlike most Columbia Rotary Club luncheons.

The speaker was U.S. Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware, a likely candidate for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

The chief topic: the Iraq war.

    The audience: predominantly Republican.

Biden humorously took note of that in his opening remarks.

“I want to thank you all for allowing me a trip here to speak to only Republicans. It’s like my hometown. I just won every district in my state except the one I live in,” he quipped.

    The crowd howled.

The senator then pounced on a member’s announcement that the club would hold its annual Christmas party at the state Department of Archives and History where members could view the original copy of the state’s Articles of Secession.

Biden asked, “Where else could I go to a Rotary Club where (for a) Christmas party the highlight is looking at the Articles?”

    Biden was on a roll.

Delaware, he noted, was a “slave state that fought beside the North. That’s only because we couldn’t figure out how to get to the South. There were a couple of states in the way.”

    The crowd loved it.

Joe! Joe! Joe. What are we going to do with you?

As Hillary, Barrack and John Edwards begin organizing in Iowa and New Hampshire among the Democrat faithful, Joe Biden is campaigning before Republicans in South Carolina.

Is this why everyone refers to you as SLOW JOE?

The first question after the speech was direct.

“Senator, will you please do me a favor and run for president?” pleaded Debbie Yoho with the Greater Columbia Literacy Council.

The Rotary discourages discussion of politics at its meetings.

Contacted later, Yoho said she was “blown away” by Biden’s speech. “I think he is the man of the hour. … He’s mesmerizing.”

Wrong crowd, Senator. First, you gotta win the Demcorat primary election.

Democratic Senator Joe Biden listens to testimony on on Iran’s nuclear ambitons during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing in September 2006 in Washington. Biden, who is expected to be the new chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee when Democrats take over the chamber next year, said he favored a variation of the ‘Go Home’ pullout option.

One of the reasons why Senator Biden receives his nickname is not because he is NOT bright or is SLOW but he does the damnest things – like plagiarisng his speeches from a British politician.

Sorry Joe, you ain’t gonna win the DEMOCRAT primary in South Carolina or in any state.

    Stay tuned…….

John Bolton Watch: Bolton Resigns as United Nations Ambassador

    boltonnovember13bweb

On Monday, Dec. 4, 2006, President Bush accepted the resignation of Bolton when his recess appointment expires.

AP: Bush accepts Bolton’s U.N. resignation

Unable to win Senate confirmation, U.N. Ambassador John Bolton will step down when his recess appointment expires soon, the White House said Monday.

Bolton’s nomination has languished in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for more than a year, blocked by Democrats and several Republicans.

President Bush through the GOP and Donald Rumsfeld over the side in November and now John Bolton in December.

    Who can blame Bolton?

Like Flap said the first time.

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton raises his hand to vote against a U.N. Security Council resolution condemning Israel’s recent attacks in Gaza at the U.N. headquarters in New York November 11, 2006.

For what it is worth, the President will be meeting with Bolton this afternoon. Flap wonders if the President will reappoint Bolton to another position in the State Department or if Bolton is through with the Bush Administration?

    ****Update #1****

Drudge is reporting that a possible replacement for Bolton is former Democrat Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell.

Iran Watch: Iran Blocks Access to Top Websites

    psiphonweb

    Psiphon

Guardian: Censorship fears rise as Iran blocks access to top websites

Iran yesterday shut down access to some of the world’s most popular websites. Users were unable to open popular sites including Amazon.com and YouTube following instructions to service providers to filter them.

Similar edicts have been issued against Wikipedia, the internet encyclopaedia, IMDB.com, an online film database, and the New York Times site. Attempts to open the sites are met with a page reading: “The requested page is forbidden.”

Ahmadinejad and the Iranian Mullahs cannot stand the outside criticism of their maniacal government.

But, the New York Times – every friend of America’s enemies?

But, there is a work around.

With some 7.5 million surfers, Iran is believed to have the highest rate of web use in the Middle East after Israel. The net’s popularity has prompted an estimated 100,000 bloggers, many opposed to the Islamic regime. Some blogs are substitutes for Iran’s once-flourishing, but now largely supressed, reformist press.

Last week Mohammed Tourang, head of the information bureau’s cultural committee, warned Iranian websites of stricter rules by announcing steps to stamp out “immoral and illegal” content. He said site owners would be given official reminders to eliminate forbidden material. Special attention would be paid to content judged to be a threat to national unity or insulting to sacred religious texts and symbols. Students and academics say the move limits their ability to conduct research.

The purge mirrors a rising tide of censorship in Iranian publishing which has resulted in the banning of hundreds of books, including western classics. Illegal satellite dishes have also been seized.

Flap’s Blog has not been banned (as of last night) and encourages discourse with Iranians who desire uncensored access to the internet.

What will be next for Iran, book burning?

    Michelle Malkin has more.

A new Canadian software tool aims to help people in web-censoring countries like Iran, where this woman was on the internet in a cafe in Tehran in August.

The Fourth Rail Watch: Bill Roggio in Iraq

    billroggio_largeweb

Bill Roggio has returned to Iraq and offers this report: The Military and The Media

I’ve completed the first leg of the journey to Iraq, after having moved through Dubai, Kuwait and Baghdad. I am now at Camp Fallujah. While in Fallujah, I’ll embed with a Marine Police Transition Team (PTT) and also meet with the Civil Affairs Group. The next stop will be Ramadi.

The trip – from my front door to Fallujah – took 3 ½ days, accounting for the 8 hour time shift between the East Coast and Iraq. This is remarkable considering Iraq is a war zone. I spent all of 35 minutes in the Green Zone getting my ID badge and another two hours waiting for a flight to Fallujah. Most of the time was spent waiting at military airbases, trying to catch that next flight out on a plane or helicopter.

During my movement to Fallujah, I was on 3 bases and one camp: At Ali Al Salem (Kuwait), BIAP (Baghdad International Airport), Camp Stryker, and LZ Washington (inside the Green Zone).

    Read it all.

Remarkable reporting for the real story from Iraq.
