Iran Nuclear Watch: United States Submarine Collides With Japanese Ship
CNN: U.S. sub collides with Japan ship
A U.S. submarine has collided with a Japanese merchant vessel, a senior U.S. Navy official told CNN.
The USS Newport News was surfacing in the Arabian Sea south of the Straits of Hormuz when it hit the Japanese ship, the official said. There were no injuries, he said, but there was some damage.
“Neither ship is in extremis,” the official said late Monday local time in Washington D.C., meaning the damage was not serious enough to put the ships in jeopardy.
The incident recalled a previous collision between a U.S. submarine and a Japanese ship.
On February 9, 2001, the USS Greeneville struck the training ship Ehime Maru during an emergency ascent demonstration.Nine people, including four high school students, were killed. Twenty-six others on the ship were rescued.
Another accident similar to this one is chronicled here.

An American nuclear submarine runs up against a Japanese tankerTOKYO – a submarine with nuclear propulsion American and a tanker Japanese entered in collision the sea of Oman, with broad of the coasts of the Arabic Peninsula, confirmed Tuesday the Japanese ministry of the Foreign Affairs.
“the ministry received information early this morning. We currently try to obtain more details “, indicated on its side a spokesman of the ministry.
According to the news service nippone Jiji, the accident did not cause any major damage and the tanker was Tuesday in a port of the plain Arab Emirates.
AP: U.S. submarine, Japanese ship collide
Damage to the fast-attack USS Newport News submarine and the tanker was light and there was no resulting spill of oil or leakage of nuclear fuel, officials from U.S. Navy, Japanese and Emirates government said.
Both ships remained able to navigate, said a Navy official in Japan who requested anonymity because the details of the incident had not yet been released.
The bow of the nuclear-powered Newport News hit the stern of the oil tanker Mogamikawa as the vessels were passing just outside the Straits Monday night, causing minor damage to the Japanese vessel, Japan’s Foreign Ministry said. The Japanese government said it was informed of the crash by the Navy and the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo.
With everything happening in and around the Strait of Hormuz, it is a little too convenient that an American Attack submarine with Tomahawk missiles is struck by an ally merchant ship while surfacing and – within striking range of Iran.
Is this a subtle warning and reminder to the Iranian Mullahs as to what American Naval fire power is?
You betcha……
And Flap is not even mentioning the nuclear-powered, ballistic nuclear missile-carrying submarines – BOOMERS
President Bush will be ordering an increase in troops in the Iraq War. And America has attacked Al Qaeda in Somalia. But, is this a prelude to the big conflict?
The destruction of Iran”s nuclear facilities?
Stay tuned……

Somalia Watch: United States Attacking Al Qaeda Positions in Somalia
MSNBC: Report: U.S. airstrike targets al-Qaida in Africa
Action reported by helicopter gunship in southern tip of country
A U.S. helicopter gunship conducted a strike against two suspected al-Qaida operatives in southern Somalia, but it was not known whether the mission was successful, CBS News reported on Monday.
The U.S. Air Force helicopter, operated by the Special Operations Command, flew from its base in Djibouti to the southern tip of Somalia, where the al-Qaida suspects were believed to have fled from the capital, Mogadishu, the network reported.
Fox News is reporting 4:25 PM PST the air strikes in Somalia and confirming the air strikes by an AC-130 Gunship.
There are casualties on the ground.
No report of whether the mission was successful.
CBS News: U.S. Strikes Al Qaeda In Somalia
CBS News Learns Strike Was Aimed At Alleged Al Qaeda Members Linked to 1998 Embassy Bombings
A U.S. Air Force gunship has conducted a strike against suspected members of al Qaeda in Somalia, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports exclusively.
The targets included the senior al Qaeda leader in East Africa and an al Qaeda operative wanted for his involvement in the 1998 bombings of two American embassies in Africa, Martin reports. Those terror attacks killed more than 200 people.
The AC-130 gunship is capable of firing thousands of rounds per second, and sources say a lot of bodies were seen on the ground after the strike, but there is as yet, no confirmation of the identities.
The gunship flew from its base in Dijibouti down to the southern tip of Somalia, Martin reports, where the al Qaeda operatives had fled after being chased out of the capital of Mogadishu by Ethiopian troops backed by the United States.
Once they started moving, the al Qaeda operatives became easier to track, and the U.S. military started preparing for an air strike, using unmanned aerial drones to keep them under surveillance and moving the aircraft carrier Eisenhower out of the Persian Gulf toward Somalia. But when the order was given, the mission was assigned to the AC-130 gunship operated by the U.S. Special Operations command.
If the attack got the operatives it was aimed at, reports Martin, it would deal a major blow to al Qaeda in East Africa.
CNN: U.S. targets al Qaeda suspects in Somalia, Pentagon official says
A U.S. gunship has attacked suspected al Qaeda targets in southern Somalia, a senior Pentagon official said Monday.
The AC-130 flew its mission within the last 24 hours, the official told CNN. The operation was launched based on intelligence that al Qaeda operatives were in the location, but there was no immediate indication of how successful the strike had been.
Additionally, the official said, the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower has moved within striking distance of Somalia, but its jets have not been put to use.
Three al Qaeda operatives accused in the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania have been hiding in Somalia for years. The US believes they were closely tied to the Somali Islamic group – the ICU.
“We had seen intelligence evidence these three Al Qaeda operative were very much influencing the leadership of the council of the ICU — for example providing logistics, fuel and arms to the militias,” said Jendayi Frazer, assistant secretary of state for African affairs
U.S. officials in East Africa said earlier this week that al Qaeda operatives were developing the ability to attack U.S. targets just as they did when the embassy bombings killed hundreds.
Intelligence shows Al Qaeda stepped up its operations in Somalia in June after an Islamic militia took power.

Rudy Giuliani Watch: Giuliani Leads GOP Polls in Nevada
Giuliani, Hillary are 2008 Favourites in Nevada
Supporters of the Republican Party in Nevada would like Rudy Giuliani to be their candidate in the 2008 United States presidential election, according to a poll by American Research Group. 31 per cent of respondents would support for the former New York City mayor in the state’s caucus.
Arizona senator John McCain is second with 25 per cent, followed by former House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich with 22 per cent, and Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney with four per cent.
Again, Mayor Giuliani showing strength in the polls – this time in the West.
Surprising weakness of McCain and Romney: McCain is a Senator in neighboring Arizona and Romney has ties to neighboring Utah (CEO and Organizer of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah).
On the other hand, Newt Gingrich shows strength.
Stay tuned…….
Update:
CBS News has released a new favorability poll.
At this early stage, Giuliani has an advantage over McCain among members of the GOP. 63% of Republicans have a favorable image of Giuliani, compared to 48% for McCain.
Mayor Giuliani leads:
Giuliani 41/22/36
McCain 39/20/41
Romney 5/10/85
Hagel 4/5/91

Iran Nuclear Watch: Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei – Iran Will NEVER Abandon Development of Nuclear Technology
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei speaks in Tehran January 8, 2007. Khamenei said on Monday Tehran would never yield to international pressure to deprive it of its right to nuclear technology, state radio said.
Reuters: Iran will never abandon nuclear work: Khamenei
Iran’s highest authority, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said on Monday Tehran would not give up its development of nuclear technology in the face of Western pressure, state media reported.
“The Iranian nation surely will not abandon its right and Iranian officials have no right to deprive the nation of its right,” Khamenei was quoted as saying on the occasion of the Shi’ite Muslim feast of Eid al-Ghadir.
Khamenei, who was shown on television addressing visiting clerics from the holy city of Qom, was making his first public appearance since rumors appeared on Web sites on Thursday that he had died. Iran last week denied the reports.
Khamenei has the final say on all state matters in the Islamic Republic, including the nuclear standoff with the West.
Of course NOT. Iran’s Mullahs COVET a nuclear weapon.
The Mullahs like Khamenei and Ahmadinejad have been consistent over many years.
However…..
Israel and the United States will not wait much longer.
And some consider war imminent.
Stay tuned…….
