Judging from his reception at the convention, Giuliani appears to be the early front-runner in the minds of California’s Republican partisans.

His leadership appeal has for many trumped the traditional conservative-moderate split that has dominated intraparty Republican politics for decades, as even many conservatives seem willing to overlook Giuliani’s positions that run counter to their beliefs on abortion, gay rights, gun control and illegal immigration.

“People are looking at the total package,” said Newbury Park dentist Gregory Cole, the author of a political blog that he says comes from a “center-right” perspective.

“They’re looking for a strong manager that they haven’t seen in President Bush, illustrated by our response to Hurricane Katrina.”

Cole said Giuliani’s views on abortion, gays and guns are “mainstream,” and thus give Giuliani an advantage many Republicans are looking for: the ability to match up against the favorite to win the Democratic nomination, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton.

“He can beat Hillary,” Cole said.
