Guilani Notes: The Spartanburg Straw Poll Part 3
McCain wins close state straw poll
Sen. John McCain narrowly won a presidential straw poll held in the northern part of this early voting state, local Republican officials said Friday.
McCain beat former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani by just two votes. The Arizona senator’s tally of 164 ballots was six more than California Rep. Duncan Hunter. Severe weather Thursday night caused a low turnout of about 800 people and forced the tallying to be suspended.
The results left no clear-cut favorite in this conservative county in South Carolina, which will hold the first Southern Republican primary on Feb. 2.
“We’ve got three people at the top that are significantly different in philosophies and what they bring to the table,†Spartanburg County GOP Chairman Rick Beltram said. “This race is wide open.â€
John McCain 164
Rudy Giuliani 162
Duncan Hunter 158
Sam Brownback 85
Mitt Romney 80
Mike Huckabee 21
And the vote when counting of votes was halted last night:
Rudy Giuliani 158
Duncan Hunter 152
John McCain 116
Sam Brownback 83
Mitt Romney 80
Mike Huckabee 21
So, let’s see in the remaining ballots between last night and today the votes counted were:
John McCain + 46
Rudy Giuliani + 4
Duncan Hunter +6
Sam Brownback +2
Mitt Romney No Change
Mike Huckabee No ChangeOf the remaining 58 votes John McCain received 46 or 79.3 %
Kind of fortuitous don’t you think?
How do you spell BULL?
The South Carolina GOP better get its act together and assure an impartial ballot or Flap suggests they forget about straw polls.
Now, it is anyone’s guess who has a leg up in South Carolina.
Back to the real polls……
Update:
Kavon over at race42008 has some more of the bull, McCain’s operatives are pulling at CPAC.
I guess watch out for the well-dressed operatives from D.C..
But, Dirty tricks don’t buy you love………

Giuliani Notes: Rudy Widens Lead in Fox News Poll
On the Republican side, Giuliani has once again widened his lead over McCain. Today, Giuliani has a 20-point edge, garnering the support of 39 percent of self-identified Republicans to McCain’s 19 percent. A month ago, Giuliani topped McCain by 12 points (January 30-31).
Former Speaker Newt Gingrich, who says he will decide whether to enter the race later in the year, comes in third with 7 percent, and former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney receives the backing of 6 percent.
Without Gingrich in the race, Giuliani tops McCain by 43 percent to 19 percent.
Voters agree with the “America’s Mayor” nickname that Giuliani was tagged with after 9/11.
A 65 percent majority thinks that moniker is a good description of Giuliani, including not only 79 percent of Republicans, but also 62 percent of independents and 55 percent of Democrats.Rudy is decisively beating McCain in poll after poll. Mitt Romney is struggling to obtain 10 per cent.
Flap thinks it is unlikely that Newt will enter the race. His unfavorable ratings are too high.
This race may well be over after Labor Day if Giuliani continues to rack up these numbers.
Of course, Flap thinks it is already over.

Giuliani Notes: Patrick Oxford Named Chairman of the Rudy Giuliani Presidential Exploratory Committee
Pat Oxford of Bracewell and Giuliani
The Rudy Giuliani Presidential Exploratory Committee today announced that Patrick Oxford will serve as Chairman of the Committee. As Chairman, Mr. Oxford will oversee the activities of the Committee. He has been active in public policy matters on the state and national level for many years and serves as an advisor to several federal and state office holders.
“I am honored to serve as Chairman of Rudy’s Exploratory Committee,†Mr. Oxford said “Rudy is a proven leader with a record of results. As Mayor, he cut taxes, fought crime and corruption, controlled spending and made New York City livable again. And when our country needed it most, Rudy Giuliani showed the leadership necessary to restore a sense of security to the people of New York and all Americans.â€
“Pat Oxford is my good friend and a man of great integrity. I am pleased that he has agreed to serve as Chairman of my Presidential Exploratory Committee,†said Mayor Giuliani. “I trust Pat and have the highest regard for his ability.â€

Giuliani Notes: Rudy Speaking at CPAC
The Mayor began speaking around noon EST to a filled to capacity ballroom at CPAC.
Unfortunately, during the speech, C-Span lost the feed or had other technical difficulties and has now switched to another program.
Pretty lame.
Flap will have the video and comment on the speech later Friday.
Update:
C-Span has resumed the speech after a 7-8 minute interruption.
Update #2
Flap has heard most of Rudy’s stump speech before. But, in this speech he invoked the images of Ronald Reagan to invoke maximum pathos for the former President.
Rudy ended the speech with Reagan’s: “Peace Through Strength” adage.
He contrasted how America would be different as it was during the Bill Clinton presidency and stressed an optimistic vision of America as a “Shining City upon a Hill.”
Flap will have the video when it is available.
Update #3
Dave G was live blogging the speech.
As Flap said before this was a variation of Rudy’s stump speech. It was nothing too special but he did NOT pander to the CPAC crowd.
It was sincere and it was Rudy.
Update #4
Michelle Malkin has the quotes and more.
And Lorie Bird at Wizbang has some negative crapola.
