Homeland Security Watch: Iraqi Detained at LAX
KTLA(Via MM and Hot Air): Iraqi Man Caught at LAX with Weird Item in Body Cavity
Security officers detained an Iraqi national at Los Angeles International Airport early today after a “metal object” was found in the man’s rectum during a body cavity search.
Fadhel al-Maliki, 35, was selected for a more thorough check by screeners in Terminal One of the airport, who found the item at about 5:40 a.m, federal and airport officials said. Al-Maliki, who lives in Atlantic City, N.J., was taking a US Airways flight to Philadelphia.
Dang….Flap will never complain of those long security lines at Terminal One again.
Now, don’t we need those super-duper “Backscatter” X-ray machines that can look through clothes and skin?
The flight took off with al-Maliki’s luggage on board. The airplane was ordered to land in Las Vegas, where the passengers got off and the luggage was searched.
Al-Maliki’s luggage was “clean,” officials said at a news conference this afternoon at LAX.
Stay tuned for more of the story. The video is here.

Rudy Giuliani Watch: California Legislature Approves Early Presidential Primary

Los Angeles Times: Legislature approves early presidential primary for California
The California Legislature today sought to give the nation’s most populous state a greater voice in the race for the White House by moving the state’s presidential primary from June to February.
The Assembly approved the bill 46-28, largely along party lines, and sent it to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has said he supports the concept.
The effort to move the primary has been cast by its supporters as an attempt to force presidential candidates to campaign in California, rather than merely coming to the state to raise money.
”We need to do this because as long as I can remember California is basically an ATM for presidential candidates,” Assembly Charles M. Calderon, D-Whittier, said during the Assembly debate.
”California is an important state in this union, and we need to be involved in who the next president of the United States is.”
And look who has been in California the past two days, fundraising and stumping for votes – Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
Interesting enough, GOP legislators opposed the move of the primary election from June.
Republicans, who are in the minority in the 80-seat chamber, opposed the measure because it does not guarantee funding for counties that would administer the additional election. A third election is expected to cost California taxpayers an additional $60 million to $90 million.
Even with the state’s presidential primary in February, elections for state and congressional candidates would continue to be held in June, with the general election in November.
Schwarzenegger, who is supportive of an early presidential primary, is waiting to see the final bill before deciding whether to sign it, his spokesman said.
The Governator approves of the move and will sign the bill – after he exacts a legislative redistricting proposal in return for a change in term limits bill that Democrat leaders desire.
Both measures will be on this February 5, 2008 ballot.
And for Rudy – California is in play and he can pretty much wrap up the GOP nomination for President should he sweep Super Tuesday elections in New York, California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan and New Jersey.
But, the fundraising will be onerous to compete in all of those expensive media markets.
Stay tuned……

CNN: Dole, Shalala to investigate Walter Reed problems.
President Bush on Tuesday named Democrat Donna Shalala and Republican Bob Dole to head a commission to investigate problems at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.Substandard conditions and a confusing bureaucracy at an outpatient facility for troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan were revealed in a series of articles in the Washington Post.
“It’s unacceptable to me, it’s unacceptable to you, it’s unacceptable to our country, and it’s not going to continue,” Bush said in a speech to the American Legion.
“My decisions have put our kids in harm’s way. And I’m concerned about the fact that when they come back they don’t get the full treatment they deserve.”

CIA Leak Case Watch: Libby Found Guilty in 4 of 5 Counts
AP: Libby found guilty in CIA leak case
Former White House aide I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby was convicted Tuesday of obstruction, perjury and lying to the FBI in an investigation into the leak of a CIA operative’s identity.
Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, was accused of lying and obstructing the investigation into the 2003 leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame’s identity to reporters.
He was acquitted of one count of lying to the FBI.
Well, you have to tell the truth. But, this is a politically contrived and complicated case.
First, the appeal which will drag on for years and then a pardon if the appeal fails.
Flap doubts Libby will ever see the inside of a jail cell.

Giuliani Notes: Iowa in Play?

AP: Giuliani plans trip to Iowa next month
Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani is planning his first campaign trip to Iowa next month, a sign that he is considering competing in the early voting state where social conservatives dominate the GOP caucuses.
The Giuliani campaign said Tuesday that the former New York City mayor plans a few days of events in the state the week of April 2.
Obviously the Mayor’s pollsters have detected an opportunity. But, will the Mayor have enough “boots on the ground” to navigate the complicated GOP caucus?
Or why bother when California, New York, New Jersey, Florida and Illinois are in play on February 5?
Interesting…….

Rasmussen Reports: 2008 Republican Presidential Primary
Giuliani Leads McCain by 15
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) continues to lead to pack of hopefuls for the GOP nomination. Support for Giuliani among those likely to vote in a Republican Presidential primary inched up to 34% this week following two straight weeks at the 33% level.
Arizona Senator John McCain (R) remains in second place, fifteen points behind the current frontrunner. With support from 19% of Likely Voters, McCain has picked up two points from last week.
But, this poll includes Newt Gingrich with 12 per cent who has recently indicated he is no McCain fan and who has had some nice things to say about Giuliani.
Giuliani currently leads all Democrats in General Election match-ups. This includes Senator Hillary Clinton, Senator Barack Obama, former Senator John Edwards, Governor Bill Richardson, and Senator Joe Biden.
