Los Angeles Times: Calif.’s presidential primary set for February

California today joined the national scramble to choose presidential nominees far earlier, as Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation to advance the state’s presidential primary election to Feb. 5.

“Moving our presidential primary election from June to February means California will have the influence it deserves in choosing America’s next presidential candidate,” Schwarzenegger said at a news conference this morning.

Good for California voters.

Better for California media consultants/producers/television.

Let the parade of Presidential candidates continue……..

And very good for Mayor Rudy Giuliani who has a substantial lead in the latest California poll.

This decision is bad for the voters as it reduces our choices. Only the big name well funded candidates have the money to advertise in many big states up front. Even a New Hampshire victory for an unknown won’t give them time to buy advertising in the Great State of California.

The only good thing to come out of this is there will be less advertising (more states to split it over) and it will be done sooner. The primaries are essentially decided on 2007.

    Steve,

I think the direction is for a national primary for presidential candidates. 2007 is for raising money and campaigning.

It is not early in the presidential campaign season and any candidate who thinks they can jump into the race after Labor Day is kidding themselves.
