Cox & Forkum: Party Crasher
Moscow could aim nuclear weapons at targets in Europe as part of “retaliatory steps” if Washington proceeds with building a missile defense system on the continent, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday.
Speaking to foreign reporters days before he travels to Germany for the annual summit with President Bush and the other Group of Eight leaders, Putin assailed the White House plan to place a radar system in the Czech Republic and interceptor missiles in neighboring Poland. Washington says the system is needed to counter a potential threat from Iran.
In an interview released Monday, Putin suggested that Russia may respond to the threat by aiming its nuclear weapons at Europe.
“If a part of the strategic nuclear potential of the United States appears in Europe and, in the opinion of our military specialists, will threaten us, then we will have to take appropriate steps in response. What kind of steps? We will have to have new targets in Europe,” Putin said, according to a transcript released by the Kremlin. These could be targeted with “ballistic or cruise missiles or maybe a completely new system” he said.
On Monday, Iran’s top security official called the U.S. plans for the missile defense shield a “joke,” saying Tehran’s missiles do not have the capability to reach Europe.
“Claims by U.S. officials that installing a missile defense system in Europe is aimed at confronting Iranian missiles and protecting Europe against Iran is the joke of the year,” Ali Larijani told the state-run IRNA news agency.
“The range of Iran’s missiles doesn’t reach Europe at all,” IRNA quoted Larijani as saying in Iran’s first public reaction to the plans. Larijani is secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, the country’s top security decision-making body.
Iran is known to possess a medium-range ballistic missile called the Shahab-3 that has a range of at least 800 miles, capable of striking Israel. In 2005, Iranian officials said they had improved the range of the Shahab-3 to 1,200 miles.
The way Russia has been stalling for Iran in the United Nations Security Council, will not support tough sanctions for them to cease uranium enrichment and cutting nuclear and defense deals with Iran is it any surprise that Iran would NOT support its patron?
The fact is the new Shahab-4 and Shahab-6 missiles have the range to threaten Europe. And guess from where the technology for these multi-stage missiles comes?
Why, Russia and North Korea.
Putin speaks with a FORKED TONGUE and Ali Larijani is a LIAR.

Representative William Jefferson Watch: Boehner Seeks Jefferson Expulsion from the House
U.S. Attorney Chuck Rosenberg (L) is joined by Assistant Attorney General Alice Fisher (R) as they announce the indictment of Rep. William Jefferson (D-LA) on 16 counts of public corruption, including bribery, in Washington, June 4, 2007. Jefferson was indicted on Monday on 16 criminal counts for conspiring to solicit bribes and pay off a Nigerian official, with $90,000 of an intended bribe found hidden in his home freezer wrapped in aluminum foil.
Boehner seeks Jefferson expulsion
House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) moved quickly to force the expulsion of Rep. William Jefferson (D-La.) from Congress following his indictment Monday on federal corruption charges.
The Republican leader will ask members of the House to vote on a resolution requiring the ethics committee to review the indictment filed against him in order to seek his expulsion from the House, according to his office.
Boehner will offer a privileged resolution on the House floor as early as Tuesday calling for the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct to review the 94-page indictment filed against Jefferson Monday. The House will then vote on his resolution calling for the ethics panel to act.
The Justice Department indicted the Louisiana Democrat Monday on federal charges of racketeering, soliciting bribes and money laundering.
And the Speaker should immediately ask Jefferson to resign from all House Committees pending his trial.
A 16 count federal indictment does not look good for Jefferson or the Democrat’s “Culture of Corruption.”
Flap thinks Jefferson should resign but Jefferson will only do that after his “plea deal.”

What a surprise – NOT.
More later…..
Update:Indictment Sought Against Rep. Jefferson
Sources tell CBS News that authorities are seeking an indictment against Congressman William Jefferson, D-La., on more than a dozen counts involving public corruption.
Jefferson has been the subject of a ongoing probe in which FBI agents allegedly found more than $90,000 in cash in his freezer.
CBS News correspondent Bob Orr reports that the Justice Department is expected to unveil the charges later today.
This was the latest development in the 16-month international investigation of Jefferson, who allegedly accepted $100,000 from a telecommunications businessman, $90,000 of which was later recovered from a freezer in the congressman’s Louisiana home.
Last year prosecutors and the FBI seized nearly 19,000 pages of documents and electronic files from his office.
Update #2:Jury Indicts Jefferson in Bribery Probe
Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., was indicted Monday on federal charges of racketeering, soliciting bribes and money-laundering in a long- running bribery investigation into business deals he tried to broker in Africa.
The indictment handed up in federal court in Alexandria., Va., Monday is 94 pages long and lists 16 alleged violations of federal law that could keep Jefferson in prison for up to 235 years, according to a Justice Department official who has seen the document.
Among the charges listed in the indictment, said the official, are racketeering, soliciting bribes, wire fraud, money-laundering, obstruction of justice, conspiracy and violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case.
Wonder if Speaker Pelosi will ask him to step down from ALL committee assignments pending trial?
Stay tuned……

Giuliani Notes: Rudy Returns to Montoursville High
Republican presidential candidate hopeful Rudy Giuliani, right, walks with Ray Huff, principal of Montour Area High School, after visiting the memorial next to the high school in Montoursville, Pa., Sunday evening, June 3, 2007 which is dedicated to the passengers who were killed in the TWA flight 800 crash off of the cost of Long Island, NY. Giuliani was at the school to address the graduating seniors at an invitation-only program.
Giuliani returns to Pa. high school that lost students in crash
Rudy Giuliani returned to Montoursville High School tonight, more than a decade after 16 students and five chaperones died aboard T-W-A Flight 800 when it crashed off the Long Island Coast in July 1996.
The Republican presidential candidate was New York’s mayor then. He says the tight-knit community has a special place in his heart.
Giuliani says he’ll never forget meeting the families of Flight 800 and that watching those families helped him deal with the aftermath of the 2001 terrorist attack
As Presidential Rudy stays above the illegal immigration dust-up between McCain and Romney.
Flap can only surmise what tomorrow’s New Hampshire GOP debate will bring.

Hillary Clinton Watch: Hillary’s War Part Four
Hillary Clinton addresses Code Pink on March 6, 2003 and discusses Iraq, Saddam Hussein and the run up to the Iraq War.
Hillary didn’t read the Iraq National Intelligence Estimate nor did John Edwards. They both voted for the Iraq War.
Wolf Blitzer of CNN wouldn’t let them dodge the question in last night’s debate.
But, they were fully briefed – whatever that means, since their staff did not read it either.
Obama called Edwards out for his support on the war but does it matter? Or affect frontrunner Hillary?

Illegal Immigration Watch: Senate Immigration Bill Supporters More Optimistic
Senator Jon Kyl speaks about immigration legislation during a press conference on Capitol Hill, May 24, 2007, in Washington, D.C. Listening, from left to right are Senators Dianne Feinstein, Lindsey Graham, Mel Martinez, Arlen Specter and Edward Kennedy. The U.S. Senate, by a single vote, defeated a bid to place a five-year expiration date on a guest worker program that is a cornerstone of a proposed overhaul of U.S. immigration law.
Backers of Immigration Bill More Optimistic
After a week at home with their constituents, the Senate architects of a delicate immigration compromise are increasingly convinced that they will hold together this week to pass an overhaul of the nation’s immigration laws, with momentum building behind one unifying theme: Today’s immigration system is too broken to go unaddressed.
Congress’s week-long Memorial Day recess was expected to leave the bill in tatters. But with a week of action set to begin today, the legislation’s champions say they believe that the voices of opposition, especially from conservatives, represent a small segment of public opinion. Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), who led negotiations on the bill for his party, said the flood of angry calls and protests that greeted the deal two weeks ago has since receded every day.
Flap knows of very few folks in California that support this grand compromise bill.
Everyone hates it. But, everyone hates the status quo and President Bush’s inaction to enforce the existing laws MORE.
But, calling California Senators Feinstein and Boxer is a waste of time and most California voters know it. They are insulated against public opinion, since neither will be up for re-election in 2008.Flap predicts that this bill may not pass the United States Senate but will CERTAINLY FAIL in the House since there will not be the 70 plus GOP members to give cover to the Democrats who represent districts who may not be so predisposed to support the bill. If GOP House members support the bill, then Flap looks for even greater GOP losses in 2008. And contributions – well, we have seen already how they have been affected.
California voters are “tired” and “frustrated” by the inaction of politicians on both sides of the aisle. They will make their frustrations known soon in 2008 Presidential polling and the 2008 House election cycle, despite what the Senate does this week.
And President Bush will be down to 20% approval if he does not demand major changes to the bill. Watch how fast the GOP Presidential candidates (except McCain) run against the President on this issue and the Iraq War.
Stay tuned….
