Rudy Giuliani Watch: Hillary Clinton Smeared General Petraeus
Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani, left, speaks with Frances Daniel during a campaign stop as she has lunch at the OK Caf, Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007, in Atlanta.
Rudy CALLS OUT Hillary:
Republican presidential contender Rudy Giuliani on Thursday accused Democratic rival Hillary Rodham Clinton of participating in “character assassination” for questioning Gen. David Petraeus about his assessment of progress in Iraq.
Clinton, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, was one of several Democrats and some Republicans who expressed skepticism with President Bush’s top military general’s more positive outlook on Iraq than recent independent reviews.
Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker told Congress Iraq remains largely dysfunctional but said violence in recent months had decreased since the influx of 30,000 additional troops earlier this year.
“The reports that you provide to us really require the willing suspension of disbelief,” Clinton said Tuesday.
Remember the MoveOn.org’s full page New York Times ad that the Times sold the Left-Wing “Independent” Organization?
Campaigning in Georgia, Giuliani assailed Clinton for the second straight day and tried to link her to a newspaper ad from the liberal anti-war group MoveOn critical of Petraeus. The ad accused Petraeus of “cooking the books” for the White House. “General Petraeus or General Betray Us?” it asked, playing off his name.
The Rudy Quotes:
- “We believe, unlike Hillary Clinton, that General Petraeus is telling the truth,” Giuliani said.
- “What I don’t think should happen in political discourse is the kind of character assassination that MoveOn.org participated in in calling him General Betray Us, that The New York Times gave them a discount to do and that Hillary Clinton followed up on with an attack on his integrity.”
- “It is time for Americans to really insist that American politicians move beyond character assassination and this is exactly what they attempted to do with General Petraeus.”
- “Maybe you can disagree with his tactics,” Giuliani said of Petraeus. “I agree with them, but you have no right to disagree with his integrity.”
- “Their excessive political zeal led them to character assassination,” he said.
The ad Rudy will be running in the New York Times tomorrow will be posted as soon as it is available.

*****UPDATE*****
Rudy Giuliani called on The New York Times to allow the campaign to purchase a full page ad at the same discounted rate they provided MoveOn.Org for their “abominable†ad attacking General Petraeus.

News item: TIMES GIVES LEFTIES A HEFTY DISCOUNT FOR ‘BETRAY US’ AD
The New York Times dramatically slashed its normal rates for a full-page advertisement for MoveOn.org’s ad questioning the integrity of Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq.
Headlined “Cooking the Books for the White House,” the ad which ran in Monday’s Times says Petraeus is “a military man constantly at war with the facts” and concluded – even before he testified before Congress – that “General Petraeus is likely to become General Betray Us.”
According to Abbe Serphos, director of public relations for the Times, “the open rate for an ad of that size and type is $181,692.”
A spokesman for MoveOn.org confirmed to The Post that the liberal activist group had paid only $65,000 for the ad – a reduction of more than $116,000 from the stated rate.
Left Wing Fringe Rag may be TOO mild of a term.

Democrat Reid: Iraq Plan Unacceptable
Senate Democratic leaders on Wednesday rejected the call by the top U.S. general in Iraq to send 30,000 U.S. troops home by next summer, saying it does not go far enough.
“This is unacceptable to me, it’s unacceptable to the American people,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.
Reid said the recommendation by Gen. David Petraeus, expected to be embraced by President Bush in a speech to the nation on Thursday, “is neither a drawdown or a change in mission that we need. His plan is just more of the same.”
“I call on the Senate Republicans to not walk lockstep as they have with the president for years in this war. It’s time to change. It’s the president’s war. At this point it also appears clear it’s also the Senate Republicans’ war,” Reid told a Capitol Hill news conference.
But, will the Democrats in Congress be able to change USA Iraq War policy?
NOPE – nor do they have the will to do so.
Reid and Pelosi will be content to sit back and KARP on Bush hoping the United States mission eventually fails.
Pathetic…….

By the way, Elvira Arellano’s son is returning to Mexico to be with his mother while critics accuse her of exploiting him.
Immigration activist Elvira Arellano hugs her US-born son Saul, 8, upon his arrival to Mexico at the International Airport in Mexico City, in a Friday, Aug. 31, 2007 file photo. The boy has become a star attraction at pro-immigration events since his mother took refuge in a Chicago church before she was deported to Mexico. George Will Asks Why the Thompson Candidacy is Necessary
Republican Presidential hopeful and former Sen. Fred Thompson,R-Tenn., makes his remarks during a campaign stop Monday Sept. 10, 2007, in Columbia, S.C
Ouch!George Will pans Fred Thompson and his “Rocky Rollout” Presidential campaign:
Fred Thompson’s plunge into the presidential pool — more belly-flop than swan dive — was the strangest product launch since that of New Coke in 1985. Then, the question was: Is this product necessary? A similar question stumped Thompson the day he plunged.
Sean Hannity, who is no Torquemada conducting inquisitions of conservatives, asked Thompson: “When you look at the other current crop of candidates — Republicans — where is the distinction between your positions and what you view as theirs?” Thompson replied: “Well, to tell you the truth, I haven’t spent a whole lot of time going into the details of their positions.”
Remember when Flap previously criticized Thompson on his non-conservative views on McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform?
Well, George Will takes notice as well:
He also is unfamiliar with the details of his own positions. Consider his confusion the next day when talk radio host Laura Ingraham asked him about something he ardently supported — the McCain-Feingold expansion of government regulation of political speech. His rambling, incoherent explanation was just clear enough to be alarming about what he believes, misremembers and does not know.
Is Fred Thompson ready for prime time?
Robert Novak: “Thompson’s late start in itself is not a fatal flaw. Still, it had been conceded in party circles that when he finally became a candidate, his beginning better be memorable. It was not. While Thompson voiced obligatory conservative slogans in New Hampshire, Iowa and South Carolina, he was not the white knight that worried Republican loyalists desperately desire. His debut might have been more blood-stirring had his gatekeepers not turned away talented helpers.”
New York Times’ Gail Collins: “He’s here. He’s tanned. He’s ready. He looks like he needs a nap. When it comes to overhyped underperformers, Fred Thompson’s entry into the presidential race was right up there with Britney Spears at the MTV awards.”
George Will is RIGHT: WHY?

Rudy Giuliani’s Road to the White House
Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani, left, speaks local resident Melanie Chase and her son Jordan about her concerns with border security, during a campaign stop at the Sarris candy store in Canonsburg, Pa., Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2007.
Chuck Todd, political director over at NBC News has this piece as to why Rudy continues to be the frontrunner and FAVORITE to win the GOP nomination for President.
So who is the stronger frontrunner for their respective party’s nomination, Hillary Clinton or Rudy Giuliani ? My answer might surprise you. Considering where things are right now in both primary fights, factoring in money, the calendar and certain intangibles, a strong case can be made that Giuliani’s tenuous grip on the frontrunner tag is as strong, if not stronger than Clinton’s.
This may seem nuts to think considering the slew of polls showing Clinton leading and her standing in the early states improving, but remember this campaign is about more than poll standing right now. And don’t get too caught up in the Giuliani poll standing right now since we are in the midst of a Fred Thompson bump. Talk to me in a month if this Thompson tightening continues, but until then, tread carefully.
What Todd should have mentioned is ELECTABILITY. As it becomes clearer that Hillary will be the nominee fro the Democrats, GOP voters will choose a candidate that CAN beat her.
Neither Romney nor Thompson will hold up to the ELECTABILITY TEST and put 50 states except Massachusetts in play.
