President 2008,  Ron Paul

Ron Paul Watch: The Disciples or Internet Spammers?

The Disciples of Ron Paul, Spreading the Word in N.H.

There’s no mistaking which house on Lake Shore Drive, about 45 minutes northeast of Manchester, is the one full of Paulites — the intensely loyal, almost fanatical supporters of Rep. Ron Paul. Signs are everywhere. On the back window of a brand new black Toyota, on the bumper of a green Geo, on a white Volvo station wagon that sits beside a beat-up lime green Honda. “Ron Paul 2008.”

“We can run the whole New Hampshire campaign right here,” says Jim Forsythe, 39, a former Air Force pilot who’s on his driveway in jeans, T-shirt and white socks. “We’re the hard-core supporters.”

These folks have been spamming my blog for months now.

Either they have lots of time on their hands or somebody is paying this group to harass the GOP. My guess it is a left wing group who is funding these internet spammers to create dissension among the GOP. As it has been rumored the GOP actually helps fund Ralph Nader and Green Party efforts to disrupt the Democrats.

The notiariety these folks have obtained highlights the failure of the national party primary system. The small states of Iowa and New Hampshire have for decades had a disproportionate say in who the Presidential nominees will be. Look for a national primary system to be developed by the parties in time for the 2012 election.

Now, as for Ron Paul.

Please……. a fringe candidate whose fundraising effort should draw Federal Election Commission scrutiny.

And, when will the GOP stop including him in the debates? Or does the top tier wish to use him as a foil for the left?

Spam away Paulites………

You are correct about Iowa and New Hampshire having a disproportionate say. As for Ron Paul, for per capita donors he is doing much better out West. Iowa is low on the rankings and only in parts of New Hampshire is he currently polling well. There is a post by Patrick Ruffini near the top of the searches for Ron Paul which has a nice map showing where his donations are coming from. Also, the Constitution isn’t fringe. Have you read it recently?

  • Flap

Here we go with the Paul spammers.

    Ron Paul = fringe

FEC should and will investigate where his campaign is getting his money regardless of the maps.

  • Curtis

Let them investigate. I could care less. Also, if you don’t want Ron Paul traffic to show up to your blog then use the tags so they won’t show up in the rankings. Continuing to assert that the Constitution is fringe only makes you look ignorant. Do you have some ideas to attack with logical criticism or are you just going to keep crying about what you perceive to be Ron Paul spam?

  • Curtis

Name-calling? I didn’t call you any names but you. Ignorant isn’t a name.

Be assured that I could care less what the FEC does in regards to investigation of his fundraising. He’s getting money from leftists, libertarians and disillusioned conservatives. If there were dirty tricks involved it would open a box that the FEC wouldn’t want to open and probably be good publicity for RP. His campaign isn’t involved in any shenanigans. I can’t speak for the leftist groupies that’ve tossed a few bucks his way.

  • Flap

    Read the comments policy.

My bet is that Paul is receiving most of his money from Libertarians, Democrats and Green Party members.

Isn’t that why you are trying to get Paulites to re-register Republican so they can vote in GOP Primary elections?

  • Kyle

What exactly do you want the FEC to investigate, his contributions from Libertarians, Democrats and Green Party members? As far as I know, the FEC hasn’t prohibited such donations. The FEC numbers show that Ron Paul was refunding unacceptable donations, as did all candidates. Ron Paul received a high $ per capita in New Hampshire, so I think you may see a December Surprise.

  • Valerie

Hi, there. Found your blog in my daily search for Ron Paul news.

I’m a 36 year old mom of two kids that’s voted Republican since 1992. I’m excited to support Ron Paul because he is a true conservative. Disaffected conservatives like myself love Ron Paul. The Republican Party’s ridicule of us for adhering to our principles isn’t going to win our votes in 2008, especially when the Party continues to abandon those same principles (limited government, low taxes, pro-life) then demonize those of use who point out that fact.

I welcome the FEC’s scrutiny of Ron Paul’s numbers. They will find them to be without flaw.

    • Flap

      Valerie,

      Where do you live?

      Are you a registered Republican?

By the way, why do you say that Ron Paul is a true conservative? Why not say he is a libertarian?

  • Flap

I think we will see alot of New Hampshire anti-GOP ads paid for by the LEFT under the ruse of grassroots Libertarian activism.

As long as the source of the money is disclosed there is no per se violation of the law. So the Paul campaign should welcome the scrutiny.

    Right?

  • Valerie

Yes, I’m a registered Republican. Lifelong. I live in Georgia. Click on the URL and you’ll see my smiling face on my profile pic and in a lot of the other pictures on there as well.

Did you know Ron Paul has NEVER voted to raise taxes, Flap? Did you know that he doesn’t participate in the Congressional Pension Program? Did you know that he returns a portion of his budget to run his office in Washington back to the treasury every year? Did you know he favors returning powers to the states that aren’t expressly authorized in the Constitution? Did you know he is personally pro-life and has delivered over 4,000 babies?

He has libertarian views on some issues like ending the war on drugs, but, to me the war on drugs has been very costly and came at the expense of the futures of many thousands of young black men, so I think I’ll let that one go. In fact most of his “libertarian” views are on sticky social issues that he would prefer to let states and local governments hash out, rather than make federal cases over them.

You sound like a smart person. You probably know all this stuff already. You probably just don’t like RP’s position on Iraq. I’m I right?

    • Flap

Yes, I know Ron Paul’s positions.

There are many of his positions that are just plain weird. Drug policy is just one. Eimination of the Federal Reserve banking system is another.

Other positions are just wrong. Iraq War is one. Abolishing the IRS is another.

Ron Paul is NOT a Republican but a libertarian or a Consitution Party member.

Why is he running in the GOP Presidential Primaries?

  • Kyle

You may see those ideas as radical, but recall that the idea of abolishing departments hardly started with Ron Paul. Reagan wanted to abolish the Department of Education, for example.

Ron Paul is a ten-term Republican Congressman. He’s no less Republican than anti-gun, pro-Choice Giuliani, or flip-flopping Mitt Romney, who said that he wanted to get away from the Reagan-Bush era and now embraces Reagan every time he opens his mouth. George Bush came into office on a plank of a humble foreign policy, and no nation-building. Now we spend our time nation-building in Iraq. If staying in Iraq is a conservative view, why is it? What makes staying in Iraq and spending billions on people who hate us conservative? Its certainly not fiscally conservative, and its not a humble foreign policy of no nation-building.

The difference is that Ron Paul is fiscally conservative, and these two aren’t hardly conservative in any sense.

    • Flap

Reagan did not propose to abandon the War on Drugs. Nor did he propose to abandon the United Nations, the Internal Revenue Service nor the Federal Reserve Banking system.

Ron Paul has and is out of the mainstream of political thought.

Rudy is pro-choice as was Barry Goldwater. He is not anti-gun but has supported reasonable restrictions in crime infested NYC.

Ron Paul is not fiscally conservative. He is fiscally WEIRD.

  • Kyle

So in your view Rudy is conservative despite the fact that he:

Supports “reasonable restrictions” on gun ownership (owning a gun in NYC is nearly impossible. Trump and a few others own guns legally, anything but reasonable) as an anti-crime measure
Sued gun manufacturers and said that they were an industry “which profits from the suffering of innocent people”
    Is Pro-Choice
    Has a history of cross-dressing
Lived with two gay men for a while
Declared NYC a sanctuary city for illegal immigrants
    Favors amnesty
Refuses to sign a pledge not to increase taxes
    Opposes prayer in school

Its not unusual that you would think Ron Paul is not a conservative, or not a Republican, because your views on conservatism are not within the mainstream of conservatism.

  • Flap

Now the issue is Rudy and not Ron Paul’s weird views on the world.

That is why the Paulites are nothing but anti-GOP plants.

Rudy is mainstream and center-right. Rudy is a Republican.

Ron Paul is just weird with off the wall political ideology posing as a member of the GOP.

  • Kyle

He’s not posing as a member of the GOP, he IS a member of the GOP. He’s a ten term Republican Congressman. Every cycle, his voters re-elect him as the Republican candidate for Congress. He has never voted for a tax increase. He’s been in the federal government as a Republican for 20 years, and draws respectful commentary from Newt Gingrich and Reagan, before he passed on.

  • Kyle

Flap, the troops support Ron Paul’s goal to bring them home. Why don’t you support the troops?

Ron Paul Again Leads in Military Contributions

Once again, Ron Paul has outraised all candidates in the Republican primary race in donations from current and former members of the military. Ron Paul’s controversial message of non-interventionism may not be popular with the rest of the Republican field, but it seems clear that it is resonating with the troops that are potentially put into harm’s way by American foreign policy. Ron Paul voted against the Iraq War from the outset, and remains a strong advocate for a humble foreign policy, and a return to the Republican policies of non-interventionism and ‘no nation building’.

    • Flap

      Wow is that convoluted logic.

Money doesn’t buy you love or votes, now does it?

Why is Ron Paul trailing in all national and statewide polls?

      Every poll.

Answer: He is weird and out of the mainstream of political thought.

      • gee whiz

It is too bad you think the Constitution is “Weird”. But then again neo-con facist types have never liked to be held down by the law. All the things you think are weird are not authorized by the constitution. The Federal Reserve prints money but only Congress has that authority. The UN routinely wants to impose laws on Americans that are not allowed by the constitution. The IRS is an instrument of enslaving people. And the Iraq War, besides not being Declared as requird, is not necessary. Iraq was no threat to us. We had no reason to invade.

        • Flap

Ron Paul is weird and what you espouse is weird and out of the mainstream of political thought.

          Actually, it is extremist.

The Constitution is not weird but Ron Paul is.

  • Flap

I believe Newt Gingrich and George W Bush supported a different GOP primary Congressional candidate when Paul ran in 1996.

Is this why Paul hates Bush and the GOP so much?

    • Kyle

Are you referring to when they supported a Democrat, Greg Laughlin, who changed parties? And you’re using this to claim that the candidate in question was more Republican or conservative than Ron Paul? The Republican voters were not fooled. They elected Ron Paul anyway.

After Ron Paul served in the House, Gingrich grew to like him, and has had many positive things to say.

“If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism. I think conservatism is really a misnomer just as liberalism is a misnomer for the liberals–if we were back in the days of the Revolution, so-called conservatives today would be the Liberals and the liberals would be the Tories. The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is. There is a legitimate need in an orderly society for some government to maintain freedom or we will have tyranny by individuals. The strongest man on the block will run the neighborhood. We have government to insure that we don’t each one of us have to carry a club to defend ourselves. But again, I stand on my statement that I think that libertarianism and conservatism are travelling the same path.”
      -Ronald Reagan

“Ron Paul is one of the outstanding leaders fighting for a stronger national defense. As a former Air Force officer, he knows well the needs of our armed forces, and he always puts them first.”
      -Ronald Reagan

      • Flap

Yep, the mainstream GOP in Texas recruited a former Democrats to run against the Libertarian Paul.

Ron Paul is a libertarian and not a Republican.

He should again seek the Libertarian nomination for President like in 1988. And leave the GOP alone.

Honestly, he is an embaressment to the GOP and that is why the party chose to defeat him. They were unsuccessful but will probably try again in 2008.

        • Kyle

If Paul was as un-Republican as you say, he should be polling lower than Brownback and Tancredo, yet he’s not. He’s increasing his polling, and money has been rolling in. While Huckabee may be polling 1% higher, his supporters obviously don’t value him enough to send him money, else his Q3 take would have been better.

Paul will not be defeated in 2008. If the Presidential nomination doesn’t work out, he’ll maintain his seat.

        • Flap

Ron Paul is appealing to a certain weird segment of the voter base. This is a 3-5% fringe.

These votes will be meaningless (no hope of a majority) and helps Rudy get the nomination.

Except for the top 4 candidates, the rest of the GOP field are hopeless anyway.

  • Kyle

Flap, USA Today Gallup poll released today has Ron Paul at 5%. That’s 1% behind Huckabee. The new radio ads will increase the base of supporters.

  • Kyle

Certainly. I’m a libertarian, and I’ve given him money. As Reagan says, libertarianism is the heart and soul of conservatism.

      • Kyle

Yes, Texas has an open primary system. Generally it won’t be a problem, though. Texas is one of the few states where one can register as a Libertarian.

        • Flap

Ron Paul is a libertarian. He has run for President on the Libertarian Party standard in 1988.

Why run for the GOP nomination in 2008?

How is Ron Paul polling in Texas?

        • Flap

Ron Paul is a libertarian. Will he rule out a Libertarian and/or Constitution Party nomination run when he loses the GOP nomination?

          I bet not.

Paul is a Republican Congressman but the Texas GOP Party recruited a candidate to run against him. Does that say anything?

        • Kyle

He’s said many times that he’s not going to do a third party or independent run.

They did not recruit a candidate to run against him. The Democrat switched parties, and Ron Paul challenged him in the primary.

        • Flap

The Democrat Laughlin switched parties a year before the election and the GOP party establishment supported Laughlin against Ron Paul – including Newt Gingrich and George W. Bush.

This is one of the reasons Paul hates Bush.

        • Kyle

That was mostly the elder Bush.

George W. Bush didn’t stick to his word of fiscal conservatism, a humble foreign policy, and no nation-building. Now he’s paying the price in job approval ratings.

      • Kyle

Yeah, but that’s one state. Did you know that Ron Paul collected the second most of any candidate in donations from New Hampshire, second only to Romney? He’s going to be powerful in New Hampshire.

        • Flap

Ron Paul will not win New Hampshire but will simply be the anti-GOP spoiler candidate.

Money does not win you elections when you have no broad base of support.

  • Kyle

    Hey Flip,

My name is Flap and you have violated my comments policy.

    This is a warning.

Do it again and I will ban you.

  • brian

Didn’t he raise as much as McCain almost? You want to eliminate McCain too? I think McCain has spilled his own blood enough for this country. When McCain says he has paid in blood for our nation he means it. Not like the long meetings that Rudy considers his blood.

    • Flap

      Brian,

There will come a time where the national polls will determine who will be in the GOP debates.

With Iowa setting its caucus on January 3rd and New Hampshire now sure to set its primary in December 2007 this exclusion will come sooner than later.

The polls will determine who sits on the platform not fundraising.

I would think the Big 4 will duke it out starting within 30 days:

      Rudy
      Thompson
      Romney
      McCain

  • Kyle

    Q3 raised:
    Ron Paul: 5.4 million
    John McCain: 5.7 million

      Kyle, you’ve reversed Paul’s numbers.

      Paul: 5.2 Million
      McCain: 5.0 Million

      Paul: 5.4 Million

    • Flap

And with New Hampshire GOP primary sure to be moving to December 2007 he better start spending the money now.

      Use it or lose it.

The February 5th day of reckoning will be here before you know it.

  • Wiseburn

    Hi Flap,

Thanks for the open Ron Paul thread. The left wing groups are funding Hillary, not Paul. Paul’s supporters include Republicans, Libertarians, Independents and even Democrats. Some are drawn by his anti-Iraq War position. I became a Paul fan for his record opposing taxes http://www.ntu.org/ and his high scores on the RLC’s Liberty Index of roll call votes http://republicanliberty.org/libdex/

Addressing some of your complaints. Paul ran as the Libertarian Candidate in ’88. Been there, done that. He’s ruled that out this time around. Ballot Access is difficult for third parties and they generally are excluded from Debates. As a 10 term Republican Congressman and Reagan supporter, I think he has the right to run for the Republican Ticket.

Paul’s low polling: This site has one explanation
    http://the-fifthhorseman.blogspot.com/2007/10/of-yankee-fans-and-ron-paul-polls.html

I think it’s because the polls mostly call those 45 years old or older with landlines. This misses
Paul’s younger crowd who found out about him on the internet. Paul is also attracting support from those who’ve never voted or haven’t voted in years. They’re not on the pollster’s list either.
This also explains the registration drive.

Paul’s supporters are making time and sending money because they want real change. Based on Paul’s principled record, we think Paul will bring change and not more of the same. I don’t want my son to inherit a $10,000,000,000,000 debt plus another %50 trillion in promised entitlements. I also strongly oppose the loss of many of our freedoms the last six years in the name of “Security”.

I’m starting to wonder; Is all the Paul bashing because Giuliani is afraid of Paul?

    Thanks,
    Steve
    Hawthorne, CA

    • Flap

      Wiseburn,

Will you be able to vote for Paul in California on February 5th?

Or have you re-registered with the GOP?

Not too many red state folks from Hawthorne.

      • Wiseburn

        Hi Flap,

Yes. I will be voting for Paul on February 5th.

I’m not sure when I first registered GOP. I know I did
when I moved to my current residence in ’92, but I don’t recall
my registrations before that. (my parents were life-long democrats
so I started out as one)

I’m in the Westernmost part of Hawthorne. I can go North, East, South or West
from my house to visit the neighboring 36th congressional district. Hawthorne is in the
        35th.

        • Flap

Interesting that your computer has a Texas IP address.

          Want to explain that?

Do you even know where Hawthorne, California is?

          What a fraud…….

I think Flap and Rudy are afraid to believe there are actually long-time GOP voters who would support Paul. Be afraid.

Flap, please note that this post is from my work computer which has a different IP than above. Of course, I can easily make that show up from Boston and Dallas as well with a
          simple proxy change.

On Windows, you can use tracert and nslookup from the Command Window to get the same
          data. (Start->Run->cmd)

          Take care,
          Steve

          Whatever…..

Glad you are using productive work time to troll my site.

Now show me your voter registration if you are from California.

  • -S-

I looked into some very, very basic funding and otherwise group relationships between sites that promote Ron Paul and other media, and, what I came up with (very easily) was a 9/11 conspiracy group of sites + Ron Paul promoters + Prison Planet + Alex Jones + Soros Foundation funding…

Thus, Liberals. Most of them, Left-Leftwing Democrats who promote Paul and all engage in promoting, additionally, the 9/11 conspiracy sites/concepts that all pivot upon “America, bad + 9/11 is an inside job” and also think Israel’s responsible in part or whole for 9/11 (the “NeoCons are bad” perspective (and that Bush, is, too, also “bad”).

I also believe that they, a while ago, seized upon (probably planned this a long, long time ago since the Howard Dean burnout and the fringe-voter siphon effect proven by the Nader involvement in Presidential campaigns) — so, thus, I conclude the Ron Paul “movement” is largely a mimicry of the Nader and later, Dean effects upon the ’08 Presidential vote, but by the Left (thus, “mimicry”) hoping to derail the Republican votes this election.

I’ve had my share of Ron Paul Spam, all sites that declare as Republican-voter written have, too, I’m sure. They all contain the same negative pejoratives and negative tone, they’re all maligning Republicans and all Republican candidates as “not being Conservative” while ending with a “go R.P.” salutation.

Many of those involved just may BE supporters of Ron Paul but the “movement” originated and probably remains fueled by Liberal Libertarians if not guerella-type internet use by Democrats (it’s to the benefit of Democrats to generate the meme that “Republicans are torn apart” or otherwise “not united” and their obsession with Paul is their effort to illustrate this).

Paul was the Libertarian Party candidate last Presidential election so you might ask yourself why he’s now running as a Republican. His supporters are Liberals, they’re just around the bend from the usual Left Liberal, way past that, but still anti-war, anti-USA, anti-drug laws, anti-borders, anti almost everything except Paul, in my experience. Some are pro-borders but the hardcore Left of Left Libertarians among them are against the whole idea of borders, in my experience. They also all seem to think that there’s a conspiracy called “The North American Union” similar in North America to the European Union, but being conducted conspiratorially, as in, “underground” by arch-evil dictators…lots of conspiracy stuff.

    • Heather

Please watch the Vicente Fox interview with Larry King. Sorry, I’m not savvy enough to post the link, but Vicente Fox admits there is a long term plan to create the Amero. This is not a conspiracy. This is just plain scary. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYGrn0hZlCQ

Please please please wake up and realize there is a movement to end the United States sovereignty and be forced into a global society.

People are not just supporting Ron Paul, they are supporting the message of Liberty; and if you value yours, you will consider researching what he stands for. http://www.ronpaullibrary.com

    • Gregor Morrill

Paul was the Libertarian Party Presidential nominee in 1988, not the last Presidential election. He’s been a Republican representative in Congress for 10 terms now.

It doesn’t really seem odd to me or make me ask questions, but that’s because I’m familiar with his positions. His political philosophy and track record are more important to me than which political party he belongs to at the moment. He’s a lowercase libertarian now just like he was back then, and to the best of my knowledge is still on good terms with the Libertarian Party (since his principles haven’t changed).

I believe the reason he ran for Congress as a Republican so long ago, and is now running for the Republican nomination, is the ballot access restrictions. At least I know he’s stated this about why he’s running Republican and does not plan to run Independent if he does not get the nomination.

  • Flap

    -S-

    Good post and true.

But, with the internet and awareness of the RIGHT in what is happening particularly with the money it will be harder for the Paulites and the LEFT to trash the GOP.

There will be an FEC investigation and the money trail WILL be discovered.

Like the Betray-US ad this will have a negative effect on the Democrats.

By the way, with success in Iraq comes the removal of this anti-War issue from the campaigns. But, then again, Hillary has changed her position 6 times anyway on the Iraq War.

  • Heather

    This is just silly.

Why is it so hard to believe that people want to support the law of the land? Government’s role is to PROTECT OUR LIBERTIES, not infinge on them. Ron Paul is willing to deliver that message and the people NEED to hear it…

How can people spam all of these straw polls?

  • gee whiz

I have been votng for 23 years now and have never voted for a Democrat. I quit voting for Republicans after they became big spending, big government neo cons. I am supporting Ron Paul because he is what a traditional conservative Republican is. These other clods are just big spending, big government war mongers. No principles among them.

  • Walter

Spammers? Whatever. I am a lone individual actor and passionate Ron Paul supporter- thanks to Google Alerts, Digg and other systems I’m able to pretty much keep an eye on every discussion about Ron Paul, and I spend about 10 minutes a day reading and chiming in when I can. Here I am on your blog- and I have my own. It’s not one individual, it’s not two individuals, it’s thousands. We are your friends, neighbors, co-workers and co-bloggers. We are not spammers, we are not robots.

Do you have stairs in your house? 🙂

  • Flap

    Could have fooled me.

Google alerts that is how some of you do it. Do you have a private list-serv?

Or do you communicate by IM?

    • Savannah

I still fail to see why using Google alerts, or Meet-Up group e-mail lists, or even IM, or anything else, should be considered in a negative light. Aren’t we using these features in exactly the way they are intended to be used? Why on earth should not the supporters of a candidate make use of all at their disposal to spread the message of the campaign, especially in light of the mainstream media’s refusal to cover it themselves.

As well, is there anything at all stopping the supporters of Giuliani, Thompson or any of the other candidates from making use of the same tools? Where are the supporters of the other candidates, and why would their campaigns NOT make use of the wonderful communication features technology provides us with today?

Are you trying to make the same argument I’ve heard about the “unfairness” of numerous straw polls? Namely, that such polls are unfair because an inordinate number of Ron Paul supporters voted in them. As if a straw poll was not implicitly MEANT to examine how many of a candidate’s supporters were willing to get out there and travel and vote to support their candidate. I wonder if these same argument will be used against Paul if he happens to win the primary or general election: “Well, even though Dr. Paul received the most votes, the election was UNFAIR because so many Paul supporters turned out to vote for him. Therefore he is disqualified.” It’s enough to make one’s head explode.

For anyone who still believes that all Paul’s support comes from 12 supporters working out of someone’s basement who spend each day spamming online polls and blogs, the results of the straw polls tell a different story. As well, his campaign took in $5 million dollars last quarter, with an average contribution of about $40. That works out to a few more than 12 people, and it also works out to a larger donor base then most of the other candidates.

You want to call it “spam” because there are so many responses to blogs written about Paul, but for it to be real spam, it would have to be coming from just a few people commenting over and over. In reality, there are thousands and thousands of us, and just because many of us take the time to respond, our responses don’t really qualify as “spam.” There’s just a lot of us. And again, there is NOTHING stopping the supporters of other candidates from commenting wherever and whenever they see fit as well. Where are they??

        • Savannah

Worth noting: I attended the Illinois Straw Poll in Springfield. The polling was to end at 4:00pm sharp. Romney, who had paid to bus in and feed his votes was expected to win, and he did. However, at 4pm, Dr. Paul was in 2nd place. Anyone could walk up to the machine and SEE the standings. So, to remedy this, they allowed the polling to go on for another 20 minutes until they could boost Thompson’s numbers. And at 4:20pm, Dr. Paul was suddenly in 3rd place. Makes you wonder how many other times something like this has happened. I wouldn’t have believed such obvious tampering could take place had I not seen it with my own eyes.

Also, you did not comment on what I said regarding the 3rd quarter fundraising. How is it possible that just a few “spammers” came up with $5 million for Dr. Paul? I suggest you take a look at what happens on November 5th in terms of fundraising. All 12 of us Ron Paul spammers will be donating a total of $10 million dollars to him – on a single day.

        • Flap

Straw Polls in general don’t mean very much. But, Ron Paul could NOT win in his home state. This is notable.

As, I said in another comment he is around 2-3 % nationally and will not be close to winning.

Raising money also does not mean you are going to win. Sure the money can and will be used to trash the GOP in New Hampshire but your checks won’t buy too much more support in the polls. Maybe Paul will finish 5th instead of 6th.

          Ron Paul will still lose.

Remember how much money Phil Gramm and Ross Perot had a number of Presidential cycles back? How about Steve Forbes?

        • Savannah

First you say, “Also, Dr. Paul didn’t do so well in this straw poll, now did he?” And then you say straw polls don’t mean much anyway. Which is it? He didn’t come in first place in his home state, and yet he’s been re-elected to his position there 10 times.

He’s been around 2%-3% in the national polls, and the most recent Gallup I believe showed him at 5%. And this rise came with limited speaking time in the debates and virtually NO mainstream coverage. That’s all changing now. His fundraising in the 3rd quarter blasted him into mainstream reporting, both online and on television. That money is now providing for radio and TV spots that will further spread the word. He can go nowhere but UP. Raising lots of money does not guarantee you will win. However, it doesn’t mean you WON’T win, either. There is much more coming in to play here.

As well, these polls work by calling up past active Republicans with landlines who may not yet have even heard of Paul. There’s no way for those polls to measure the large number of Democrats who are switching over to Rep. to vote for Paul, Independents, people who haven’t voted in years, apathetic people who have NEVER voted before, young first-time voters, and all the various sub-groups who Paul has resonated with: anti-war liberals, home-schoolers, truckers, conservative blacks, Jews For Ron Paul, etc. etc. etc. I just don’t put much faith in those telephone polls. They are very selective.

Also, with regard to these national poll numbers, take this into consideration:

          * “In early 1975, Carter was polling at 1% (he went on to win the Presidency).

          * “In early 1987, Dukakis was polling at 1% (he went on to win the Democratic nomination).

          * “In early 1991, Clinton was at 2% (he went on to win the Presidency).

          * “In the spring of 1999, John McCain was polling at 3% (he went on to win the NH primary).

          * “In early 2003, Joe Lieberman was leading the field for the Democratic presidential nomination (he failed to win any primary).”

The poll numbers don’t seem very representative of what may happen further on down the line. Anything can, and usually does, happen.

I don’t really want to argue with you. What it comes down to is you don’t like Ron Paul, you don’t want him to win and you think his supporters are dishonest and nuts for supporting him. That’s fine, really. You are entitled to that opinion. Vote your conscience, my friend. Vote your conscience. That’s all any of us can do.

All in all Ron Paul is a fringe third tier candidate who will manage to trash the GOP with the help of the Left and Democrats.

He will receive maybe 5-7 % of the vote in SOME states.

          These are facts.

        • Savannah

Way to ignore EVERYTHING I said. Do you have any rational arguments against what I said or will you just continue to repeat the same thing over and over?

Facts?! You’re making a prediction about something that hasn’t even happened! How on earth could it be “facts”???

        • Savannah

Furthermore, if the GOP gets “trashed”, they will have only THEMSELVES to blame. George Bush has been trashing the GOP and the good name of Republicans for the past 8 years. If they don’t want to get behind the GOP candidate the people have chosen, it will be THEIR fault, and no one else’s.

        • Flap

Savannah for someone who doesn’t want to argue, you argue plenty.

If you want to look at the polls (not straw polls but scientific public opinion polls) where Ron Paul is mostly not even mentioned then I suggest you go here.
There are quite a few facts there that say Ron Paul is BEHIND and LOSING nationally and in every early state.

Polls = predictions of future results.

Outcomes change but it is doubtful Ron Paul will be the nominee of the Republican Party.

Savannah, your second comment leads me to believe you are not a registered Republican. Are you presently registered with the GOP or are you a Libertarian or Constitutional Party member?

        • Savannah

Uh, perhaps you are having trouble reading. I’ve already addressed this in detail. Here, I’ll repeat it for you, just in case you missed it:

In other words, national polls mean NOTHING.

As for my political affiliation, how on earth could you presume to know the affiliation of me or anyone else? Kind of like how you presume to know the “facts” about an election that has not even taken place yet. Are you a mind-reader or what?

In any case, I am a lifelong Republican, although I did not vote for George Bush the second time around. I am sick of the way my party has been DESTROYED by Herr Bush and his cronies. I am sick of our money and our civil liberties being stolen. And I am sick of a party that attempts to defend a President who treats our Constitution like a steaming pile of dog crap.

Is my vote a “protest” vote? You betcha. There’s a hell of a lot to protest these days. And if you believe there are not other Republicans who feel exactly the same way I do, you would be wrong.

        • Flap

You live in a dream world.

So, you voted for flipper John Kerry? Or did you vote for the Libertarian candidate for President?

And. I don’t think you are a lifelong GOP member. Too much anger.

          Which state?

        • Savannah

Too much anger?? That’s really funny. Hey, if it doesn’t make YOU angry that the GOP has been destroyed from the inside out, then I’m happy for you. Other Republicans are angry, and I am one of them, whether you believe it or not. I live in Illinois, and I became a Republican as soon as I could cast my first vote. (Not that it matters much in Illinois!)Your opinion doesn’t change the truth. And if you think Ron Paul has virtually no support in this country, from Republicans or otherwise, it’s you who are living in a dream world. Watch and see what happens on November 5th.

Now, when will you get around to addressing the points I made regarding the national polls? You still haven’t made even one valid argument.

        • Flap

          November 5th?

Don’t you know when the first primary elections are?

The National and early state polls have a margin of error of + or – 4 points. So, if they are wrong Ron Paul has 1% instead of 5% or maybe 9%.

This won’t win any GOP election.

        • Savannah

Of course I know when the first primary elections are. I’m not talking about primary elections. I just said watch and see what happens on November 5th.

I’m not going to repeat for a third time what I’ve already said about the national polls. If you choose to be obtuse, that’s your perogative.

          See you at the polls.

        • Flap

And what pray tell is happening November 5th?

Is that when Ron Paul launches his anti-GOP ads? Or raises more money for them?

I suppose he will start them soon. Use them or lose them. And justify his fundraising to the Libertarians and Constitution Party members.

Christmas anti- GOP ads from Ron Paul. How quaint…….

  • Gregor Morrill

    Hello,

When you write a post about Ron Paul, have an open comment system, and a comment policy that explicitly says comments should stay on topic – you can hardly define the comments you receive as “Ron Paul spam.” And “Ron Paul trolling”? How so?

I was raised in a Republican family, registered Republican and voted for Bush in 2000. The more I got into politics, the more I leaned libertarian (note the lowercase L) and saw the Republican Party deviating from the principles of liberty I was becoming fond of. I’ve been pretty supportive of the Libertarian Party, in general, over the last several years, and I voted for their 2004 Presidential candidate, Michael Badnarik.

I’m not particularly married to a political party as much as I am the principles of liberty, so I don’t really have a problem with Ron Paul being a libertarian (again, lowercase) in the Republican Party like you seem to.

I’ll be registering Republican so I can vote for him in the primary here in Indiana. So that’s my story, since you seem concerned about who supports Ron Paul. I found your blog and this post via Twitter tracking on “Ron Paul” because, well, I’m interested in news and discussion about him.

For the record, I’m not denying that some supporters might meet the definition of spamming, such as leaving unsolicited and off-topic comments regarding Ron Paul. I’ve seen some passionate supporters out there. I’m a pretty excited supporter myself, I just don’t comment on blogs about it much.

  • Flap

    Twitter tracking.

Can you explain to me how this works? Or do you all just keep in touch with Twitter?

    Why is it called spamming?

Well, you admitted as such in your last paragraph.

  • Gregor Morrill

Twitter tracking lets you subscribe to words or phrases. So whenever someone mentions “Ron Paul” in a public tweet, it notifies me.

    For more info see: http://twitter.com/blog/2007/09/tracking-twitter.html

I don’t really “keep in touch” with people about Ron Paul, other than following news and discussion. Most news items about Ron Paul I find via the LewRockwell.com blog, Meetup.com communications, or other blogs occasionally. I’ll mention interesting things to friends on twitter, or maybe a blog post, but otherwise there’s not some organization of distributing news, at least that I’m a part of. And honestly, most of my friends aren’t really interested in politics, or at least early primary politics. 🙂

    Spamming:

I was referring specifically to this post – a post about Ron Paul. I’d hope we’re in agreement that this thread is not “Ron Paul spam”, since it’s on topic.

  • Flap

Gotcha on the Twitter track. Do you do it to your phone or IM?

Ron Paul supporters have a knack of blog spamming. Especially flooding comments sections when there is an unfavorable post. Like in the old chat room days when unwelcome newbies would come in and the regs would spam them out.

So, just because a post is on topic doesn’t mean it is not spam.

  • Gregor Morrill

I think I’ve only made 3 comments, ever. Maybe 4. here, then here, and finally on your post right here. Those were the blog posts I found via Twitter tracking that interested me enough to leave a comment, and were in the last week. So 3 in a week, I guess that’s .43 comments per day.

    Do I fit your mold?

  • Flap

You are a newbie then to the blogs? You have your own.

Have you re-registered to the GOP yet? So, you can vote for Ron Paul for President.

  • Gregor Morrill

What makes you think that I’m a newbie to blogs? I’ve been blogging since 2001.

Yes, as I said, I’ll be registering Republican so I can vote for him in the primaries.

  • Flap

    Sorry but you said:

think I’ve only made 3 comments, ever

Do you think Ron Paul will still be in the race by May 2008? Isn’t that when the Indiana primary election is?

  • Flap

He is around 2-3% nationally and has no hope for the GOP nomination. He (although he says no) can run on the Libertarian Party or Consitutional Party ticket.

My bet is that he will have a GOP primary challenge in his Texas Congressional district as well.

  • Valerie

New polls out today put RP at 5% nationally, Flap.

Are you paid to do this blog? Do you receive money for it? Just curious. I see you post other places I visit, too. Unless there are several Flaps that go to conservative websites.

  • Flap

Most polls have Ron Paul at 2-3%. The latest Gallup poll had 5% but RP had been 4% the previous polling period. He is off the chart (too low) in most polls.

You can see them all at Real Clear Politics.

5% is not very good, do you not agree?

I am a dentist but do sell Blog Ads on the right side bar. The rates are at the Blog Ads site. I have one running now.

And, yes I am a guest blogger at other sites. I have a backup site as well which was my original blog.

  • Valerie

I knew I’d seen you elsewhere, and liked you as a writer despite your hard-headedness.

Five percent might sound terrible to you, Flap, but it’s perfectly acceptable to me, given that I’ve been a supporter since May when poll numbers were statistically at zero.

Admit it: Isn’t it fun (and profitable) to get all this traffic from us Ron Paul supporters?

  • Valerie

OK, well, not a big spike in traffic, but, certainly you’ll agree, we are a fiesty group.

There is a joke going around that I think you’ll appreciate: How you can tell if someone is a Ron Paul supporter? He’ll tell you.

I think it’s fitting to add to that, that an RP supporter will tell you he’s a supporter even if he knows you might punch him in the face for saying so. And it’s not that Ron Paul is a superhero or the messiah or anything, it’s just that so many of us are positively exhausted from years of having seemingly no one who listens to our cries to get government to stop taxing us and regulating us and monitoring us to death. And that finally there’s someone who says what we’d like to hear our leaders say: Not that he has the answer to the world’s problems, but simply that we have been taken advantage of and it’s time to address it.

Well, at least that’s how I feel.

    As for you being more hard-headed, I don’t think that’s possible. 😛
