Mitt Romney Mormon-Gate Watch: Did Romney Staffers Drive the Flap?
Republican presidential hopeful and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney talks to reporters Monday, Nov. 19, 2007 after landing at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in Seattle for a day of fund-raising and other private activities in the area, including talking to a group of Microsoft Corp. employees.
Soren Dayton has the poop on the role of Mitt Romney campaign staffers and the breaking of the “Mormon-Gate” story.
And, does Erick Erickson over at Redstate have a valid theory of who did it?
Now, let me throw out a new theory that I’ve been mulling over since talking to a friend this morning.
Gage and Target Point have denied doing push polling. These calls lasted about 20 minutes according to the people who have been interviewed about them. What if these weren’t push polls, but actual polling by a campaign? And the people who ran to the press were hypersensitive to the issue because they’re already supporting Romney (and paid by the campaign?).
Let’s get directly to my theory, which I admit is a bit off the wall. What if a campaign conducted a legitimate poll (push polls don’t last 20 minutes), asked about the Mormon issues in the polling, and Romney supporters who happened to get the call ran to the media screaming about them being push polls.
Now, and here’s the wild speculation on my part, what if legitimate polling was being done by the Romney campaign or a third party group or a Democrat who really doesn’t care, to find out why the Romney campaign has reached an apparent ceiling in Iowa and New Hampshire and, out of an abundance of caution, wanted to see if “the Mormon factor” is actually having an impact? Because of the nature of the questions, some Mitt supporters thought they were being push polled, and the whole thing blew up.
Erick may be onto something. The Romney folks polling “blew up” over the Mormon issue and when it did they have attempted to turn it into a “positive” – like when Mitt took over the Olympics and turned it around.
- First, they implicated Rudy and his campaign consultants – the Tarrance Group.
- Next, it was McCain – maybe retribution for McCain’s mother’s Mormon comments.
- Finally, Mitt complained this was un-American and blamed John McCain again – McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform.
And, what is Justin Hart’s role with MyManMitt.com in disseminating the story. An unofficial blogger Justin is as “unofficial” as Hugh Hewitt is neutral in the Presidential race. For that matter, wasn’t Justin on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show today? Funny how he didn’t mention that Romney staffers were the ones who narc’ed about the anti-Mormon calls to the MSM.
Interesting?
Perhaps, it is all “inside” baseball politics.
But, as Flap said before, if anyone in the Romney campaign is responsible, Mitt’s campaign for President is DONE.
Stay tuned as this story further develops…..

Giuliani Nevada Poll Watch: Rudy Beating Romney by 7 Points
Former mayor of New York and Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani meets with a veteran at the Maple Tree restaurant in Oak Park, Illinois November 20, 2007.
Research 2000 Nevada GOP Poll:
- Giuliani: 29 percent (18, 38) (August, March 2007)
- Romney: 22 percent (28, 4)
- Thompson: 15 percent (18, -)
- McCain: 8 percent (8, 18)
- Paul: 7 percent (1, -)
- Huckabee: 6 percent (2, 1)
- Tancredo: 1 percent (1, 1)
- Hunter: 1 percent (1, 1)
- Undecided: 11 percent (18, 20)
Rudy is up from August as are Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul. Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson are both down but Romney more than Thompson.
This is the second Nevada poll this week showing Rudy with a firm lead. Nevada’s GOP caucus will be January 19th the same day as the South Carolina primary election.
A Western state that caucuses 14 days after Iowa, Rudy is showing strength in a state with a large Mormon population that is contiguous to Utah. This is a state thought to be “OWNED†by Mitt Romney.
It is looking like Nevada might be the first “EARLY†state that delivers a win for Giuliani before the Florida and Super Duper Tuesday Primary elections.
Stay tuned……
Republican presidential hopeful, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, accompanied by Illinois House Republican Leader Tom Cross, left, and former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar calls on a reporter at a press conference Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007 in Chicago. Edgar endorsed Giuliani Tuesday.

Scott McClellan Accuses Bush, Cheney and Rove in CIA Leak Case
Former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan sitting next to Presidential Advisor Karl Rove
Not the CIA Leak Case, Valerie Plame and Joe Wilson again?
Former White House press secretary Scott McClellan names names in a caustic passage from a forthcoming memoir that accuses President Bush, Karl Rove and Vice President Cheney of being “involved” in his giving the press false information about the CIA leak case.
McClellan’s publisher released three paragraphs from the book “WHAT HAPPENED: Inside the Bush White House and What’s Wrong With Washington.â€
Flap wonders if McClellan’s publishers also have the rights to a movie version of Valerie Plame’s book?
Hasn’t this horse been beaten to death yet?

Mitt Romney Watch: Romney HYPOCRITICAL on Illegal Immigration AGAIN

Click the play button below to hear former governor Mitt Romney discuss Senator John McCain’s immigration reform plan in a 2005 interview with the Globe (11/30/05).
Flap heard Mitt Romney being interviewed by Sean Hannity on his radio show yesterday afternoon bashing Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Senator McCain on the issue of illegal immigration and “Sanctuary Cities.”
Flap has said before and will say again: Mitt Romney is a hypocritical Flip-Flopper on this issue.
Why, does Flap say this, you ask?
Now, let’s look at HYPOCRITE Mitt:
1. Illegal Alien Guatemalans mowing his mansion grounds for ten years.
2. While Romney was governor, the commonwealth of Massachusetts became one of the six states with the largest growth in unauthorized migrant population, from 2002 to 2004, according to the Pew Hispanic Center, with somewhere between 200,000-250,000 new illegal immigrants.
3. In the past, Governor Romney supported more LIBERAL positions on illegal immigration than the 2007 recently failed Kennedy-McCain legislation. In fact, he supported President Bush and Senator McCain’s efforts to change current law in favor of “AMNESTY.â€
4. And here is Mitt Romney FLIP – FLOPPING on illegal immigration positions:
Say what?
5. In 2006, Romney said “those that are here paying taxes and not taking government benefits should begin a process toward application for citizenship, as they would from their home country.â€
6. Romney Couldn’t Even Enforce Immigration Laws In State Government Payrolls.
A Globe analysis of nine recent public works projects … revealed that of 242 workers on weekly payroll lists, more than a third appeared to lack legitimate Social Security numbers. On one of the payrolls reviewed, for masonry work on the UMass dormitory project, nearly two-thirds of the contractor’s 87 workers had bogus or questionable Social Security numbers. … A spokesman for Governor Mitt Romney said it was unsurprising state money was used to pay undocumented immigrants. ‘The governor is not surprised that our current immigration laws are a mess,’ said Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom.†(Jonathan Saltazman and Yvonne Abraham, “Fake IDs Are Rife At State Job Sites,†The Boston Globe, 6/18/06)
7. As Governor, Mitt Romney Recommended Over $408 Million In State Aid To Massachusetts Sanctuary Cities Cambridge, Orleans, Somerville, Brookline, Brewster And Lexington.
8. During Romney’s Term, Proposed State Aid To These Sanctuary Cities Increased 4.07%, From $103,218,421 In FY2004 To $107,419,246 In FY2007.
9. Romney’s Last Minute Agreement With Federal Government To Allow State Troopers To Enforce Immigration Laws Was Rescinded Before It Was Ever Implemented.
“While it is technically true that Romney ‘signed an agreement with the federal government to allow state troopers to enforce federal immigration laws,’ he only did so in the closing weeks of his term, and the program never actually went into effect because it was rescinded by Romney’s successor even before the state troopers began training.†(Philip Klein, “Sanctuary Cities in Romney’s Massachusetts,†American Spectator’s Blog, www.spectator.com, 8/9/07)
So, why is Mitt Romney hypocritically attacking the Mayor and Senator McCain, when he has all of this political baggage?
Because:Mitt Romney WILL Say and Do Anything to trash his opponents and get himself elected. Is this who American voters want as their next President?

Iowa Senator Charles Grassley Predicts GOP Presidential Caucus Winner as Mitt Romney
Senate Judiciary Committee members, Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa., right, and Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., left, talk on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007, prior to the start of the committee’s markup hearing on the nomination of Attorney General nominee Michael Mukasey.
Talk about conventional wisdom:
- Mitt Romney
- Mike Huckabee
- Rudy Giuliani
California has five times the number of delegates as Iowa and has an election not an arcane caucus system.
Good grief, the national GOP has to change the method of selecting Presidential nominees.

Hillary Clinton Watch: Hillary Attack Ad Features Mitt Romney

Hillary clinton’s first negative television ad is up in New Hampshire. It features Mitt Romney (who leads the GOP polls) and John McCain who won the New Hampshire primary election in 2000 against President Bush.
Interesting that Hillary left out an attack on Rudy Giuliani who is viewed by many as her chief rival in the general election. Is she afraid of a “PUSH BACK” from the Giuliani campaign?
Like the MoveOn.org – David Petraeus FLAP?
