The Miley Cyrus – Hanna Montana – Nude Photos Flap

Flap cannot understand why a fifteen year old female would either want or be allowed to pose in this fashion?

Fifteen years old, topless and wrapped in what appears to be a satin bedsheet in the June issue of Vanity Fair. Did Miley Cyrus, with the help of a controversy-courting magazine, just deliver a blow to the Walt Disney Company’s billion-dollar “Hannah Montana” franchise?

Some parents reacted with outrage over the weekend when the television program “Entertainment Tonight” began showing commercials promoting a scoop: Ms. Cyrus, the star of the wholesome Disney Channel blockbuster “Hannah Montana,” had posed topless, albeit with her chest covered, for the Vanity Fair photographer, Annie Leibovitz.

Is there something about fame, wealth and self-destructive behavior? But, where are her parents, mentors, peers?
A blogger friend Lin Burress has the RIGHT take on the matter.

Unbelievable…….

It’s amazing how many parents seem to think this sort of thing is “no big deal” and is actually “cute” for their girls. Would love your comments on my newest post on the “sexualization of children”, especially girls.

OK HERE IS MY LIST OF CHILD PORNO DEALERS. WALT DISNEY ALWAYS HAS THESE YOUNG GIRLS IN LITTLE TO NO CLOTHS ON CABLE AND SAT. DAY IN AND DAY OUT. VANITY FAIR SHOULD NEVER HAVE ASKED A 15 YEAR OLD CHILD TO POSE LIKE THIS. MS. CYRUS’S FRANCHISE SELLS HER BODY EVERY DAY. ENT..TONIGHT SHOWED THE PIC.S TO EVERYONE. CBS MOURN.. NEWS MADE SURE TO SHOW THE PIC.S. THIS BLOG SIGHT SHOWED THEM. MOST EVERY INT.. NEWS SIGHT WILL SHOW THE PIC.S. WHERE IS THE FBI ON CHILD PORN ON THIS ONE?

I am the father of an 18-year-old daughter. I guarantee you that I consider a pose like the above one completely inappropriate for a minor. Annie Leibovitz obviously has poor judgment about appropriate photographs for young girls. Vanity Fair’s editors are equally to blame. Miley’s parents are also obliged to exercise some better judgment on behalf of their daughter. There is a reason why 15-year-olds are not considered adults! Miley herself recognizes that she exercised poor judgment, and she is old enough to bear some of the blame for her own decisions. However, the numerous adults who had to approve the taking and publication of this photo bear the greater blame.

This was not just a shot snuck by a papparazza at a party or in Miley’s own back yard. It is a professionally posed photo taken in the studio of a major national magazine. Too many checks in the system failed. This photo might be just barely legal enough that slick lawyers can argue that it is not pornography. However, the intent to appeal to prurient interests is as plain as day. I don’t know what legal action can realistically be taken against Leibovitz and Vanity Fair, but at the least they deserve a fine big enough to make them think twice before again displaying an underage girl as if she were an employee of the Washington Madame or the Emperor’s Club.

I think every single one of you have completely lost your minds. She is no more “topless” than anyone your child sees at the pool. I want to know where all you self righteous parents who drop you 10 year olds off at the mall without parental supervision come off with the idea that this photoshoot was entirely inappropriate. This photo is not pornographic in any way and yes it gives off a very sexual image, but your daughters running around in their skimpy tops and mini skirts do the same thing. Stop criticizing someone else and look at your own lives and children.

It is obvious that she is not topless (so to speak), however the sexual conotation is there. It is inappropriate for a 15 year old to be posing in this provacative manner. I don’t care who the photographer is. As far as dropping our young daughters off at the swimming pool half dressed we do need to take a look at why this is occuring and is acceptable in our society. There are two answers… first sex sells it’s big business it’s on television, magazines, billboards everywhere you look. Second, as parents we need to learn to say NO to our children and stop trying to be their friend there is time for that later when they are grown. We need to stop buying into this gimmick of sex sells everything and take a closer look at ourselves and take the moral high ground. I am not a prude, however I think we should examine what is age appropriate and stop this so our downward sprial will begin to reverse and we can start concerning ourselves with issues that really matter.

Looks to me like a modern version of “dress-up.” In other words, a “tween” girl having fun acting like and being treated like a “grown-up.” Her Dad was there apparently feeling OK about it all. I’m sure they all had good, thoughtful conversations about the shoot and its content – Liebovitz’s published comments seem to reflect that. What nobody seemed to figure on was the irrational prudishness of the American audience. I figure it is the backlash-against-the-1960’s thing. Sooo Freudian! Just chill and give a girl a break, thank you!

  • Ticked off 12 year old

For all of you who say the opinion of a child does not come close to the superiority of an adult’s opinion, screw you, don’t read this. *nods wisely*

This picture shows just how far she’ll go to be seen by everyone. I suggest she gets her act together before she starts to shave her head and/or have kids at 16. Besides, it’s not just this. Have you seen those awful photos she took? Pulling the front of her shirt out, revealing a bra, and then having the NERVE to say she wants to sue, because it’s a violation of her privacy? I’m outraged.

I want to send a shout out to all of you who are about to comment; you won’t win. I’ll win an easy $200,000 for the betting I might just as well do, going against the factor that ‘Miley won’t be the next Britney’. Let’s all just ‘pray to God’ that Billy Ray will put a rein over his daughters behavior soon.

Miley Cyrus is sick! That is gross! Who would have people take her picture when she has no shirt on? Jonathan, you`re gay.I feel ur pain Carolyn. I lost a brother too. I was 3. He got hit by a truck.

  • oh boy

as a father of a young teen girl, i am concerned about the youth of today. i don’t know how many times i’ve seen younger girls wearing bikini’s or skimpy clothing showing A LOT more skin than miley did. people should look at themselves before passing judgement. miley’s photos were taken under the supervision of her father whereas when some of you go to the beach or a public pool, there are people out there taking your picture & posting it on the net without your knowledge. i’m asking each and every one of you to be careful and be aware of your surroundings. PLEASE don’t let yourself be another statistic.

  • matthew

i think that miley should be able to do whatever she wants and people just need to stick that in their juice box and suck it

    thanks matthew

    P.S i love u miley

i’m a 37 year old guy. I don’t consider this actual nudity as most swim suits show more than this.. At the same time, I DO consider it an attempt to sell something that was intended to be “sexy” or sexual I fee it is very profound and wrong for someone who is only 15 to be photographed like this. And it being used for marketing makes it worse. Yea, sex sells. But from a 15 year old? Geesh.. Get a life. I doubt she realized at the time how forward this was going to end up. After all , the whole issue IS that she is only 15.. “only” .. Because she is young,, innocently-foolish, ect. All the more reason for tighter laws on photographing minors. Many people make mistakes of taking exposing photo’s that later ruin their lives. A wider age range than just teens do this. But at least let them be 21, or.. 18 at the youngest before they make such a choice.. Then it can be called a “bad choice” later in life and not a “mistake” should they regret it. If they never change their mind, at least the decision would be made as an adult. Not a 15 year old.

  • really funny stuff

This was an error in judgment on Miley’s part. I don’t think it’s pornographic or that irreparable damage has been done.

She’s a developing young girl. All teen girls go through the stage of discovering how much power is involved in their sexuality. It can be fun…giddy and intoxicating at times, and bad judgment is frequently involved. I think that’s all that’s involved here. However, it was on an international stage.

I’m not in favor of making kids into media celebrities. It frequently does not end well (Lindsay Lohan, Britney, Britney’s lil sis). I have zero respect for Disney. They have no respect for their audience. It’s all about the bottom line. I believe Walt would be ashamed of what that company has become.

yea today i was watching an allday marthon of hannah montana while waiting on camp rock to come on the movie was of the chain p.s. im totally white

  • RayJ

Simply an error in judgement… definitely too young to be posing in a provocative fashion though. She looks very young in these photos, hopefully she’ll be able to bounce back from all that negative publicity…

  • Deb

I would be willing to bet this is far more than an error in judgment or a misstep. I feel confident it is a calculated move to sexualize this girl for exploitation in the market of modern media. I am not suggesting for a second that it is not without her permission or without the blessing of her family. She is first a child but she is also a business and most times in business the well being of the individual comes second. We have created commercial entities that have subjugated us to their purpose. We were the creators but in the charter of that creation we signed over our will as a bargain for “success”. Caught in a web of our own making…

The amount of post on this page says it all. Someone is a “marketing genius” Obviously they got what they wanted. Who’s laughing now?

  • Andrew

I am not saying that letting “our” 15 y.o. girls pose in such a provoctive manner is appropriate or not. But, what I will say or pose…is that in the medieval times you were married off as young as 13 or 14. I am certainly not going to allow my daughter to marry at that age. But, Miley Cyrus isn’t my daughter. She is a superstar. The photos aren’t too provoctive. If anything Billy Ray should be crucified. Especially for the pic of her w/ him. The pic almost screams incest.

  • A parent and a human being

    .

I think nowadays mass media and Internet have become to the soul what the atom bomb is to the body. We, parents have long lost the battle against ever-powerful money-fuelled Empire, because we have allowed us to be driven away from a Living God for the sake of the so called ” freedom “.

Freedom for what? Not certainly the freedom to be manipulated and desintegrated; not the freedom to get corrupted without even realising.

Jesus said that whoever seduces one of these little ones wil be guilty for condenment.

Through this innocent girl they are trying to stal our daughters’ innocence and foment the culture of free sex and abortion.

Time has come to chose: either Jesus or the world. Theres is no middle way, because without Jesus the world will always be more astute and powerful than we are.

I agree with A parent and a human being. Finally, somebody gets it! As soon as people fought for their sexual freedom based on free speach which never was it’s intended use, all the porniacs came out and now we have endless problems as a result.People with sex addictions, kids so over heated that they are falling behind in school and now all the child sex abuse such as i’ve not seen in my life time. When I was younger i noticed how there was, no end to the sexualization of women and over time it’s to the point we’re arguing about child photos meant to intice imaginations to evil ,something that we used to all know was wrong.Don’t let this bother you, the Lord will sort them out.

  • Roxanne

Ok first of all, I understand Miley is a minor but it’s her decsion whether or not she wants to pose nude or wearing a turtleneck sweater and jeans with boots!! Whatever! Anyways it shouldn’t matter to ANYONE how her parents dissapline her! PEOPLE MIND YOUR OWN BUISNESS!!!! Maybe you should spend your time raising your kids and telling them it’s wrong other than talking crap about a 15 year old! Just saying!
