Barack Obama Watch: Time to Leave Trinity? The Response

Father Michael Pfleger preaching at Barack Obama’s church, Trinity United, May 25, 2008

The Obama Campaign has responded to the FLAP of Father Pfleger’s statements while preaching at Trinity United this past Sunday:

“…deeply disappointed in Father Pfleger’s divisive, backward-looking rhetoric.”

What was that rhetoric again:

  • I must now to address the one who says, ‘don’t hold me responsible for what my ancestors did.’ But you have enjoyed the benefits of what your ancestors did! And unless you are ready to give up the benefits — Throw away your 401 fund! [sic] Throw away your trust fund! Throw away all the money that been put away in the company you walked into ’cause your daddy and your granddaddy and your great grandaddy —(screaming at the top of his lungs)Unless you are willing to give up the benefits, then you must be responsible for what was done in your generation! ‘Cause you are the beneficiary of this insurance policy!
  • [garbled] expose white entitlement. And supremacy, wherever it raises its head. I said before, I really don’t want to make this political, because you know I’m really very unpolitical. When Hillary was crying, and people said that was put on, I really don’t believe it was put on. I really believe that she just always thought, ‘this is mine. I’m Bill’s wife. I’m white, and this is mine. I just gotta get up and step into the plate.’Then out of nowhere, ‘I’m Barack Obama!’Imitating Hillary’s response, screaming at the top of his lungs again, he continues, ‘Ah, damn! Where did you come from? I’m white! I’m entitled! There’s a black man stealing my show!’(mocks crying)She wasn’t the only one crying, there was a whole lot of white people crying!

I’m sorry. I don’t want in any more trouble. The live-streaming just went out again.”

Father Michael Pfleger who had been a member of the Obama campaign’s advisory board, Catholics for Obama until a few weeks ago responded as well:

“I regret the words I chose on Sunday. These words are inconsistent with Senator Obama’s life message, and I am deeply sorry if they offended Senator Obama or anyone else who saw them.”

Barack Obama has been a member of Trinty United Church of Christ for over twenty years. It is a black liberation theology church. Look at the members of the congregation gleefully celebrating Father Pfleger’s hateful comments. Why does Obama and his family continue to have membership at and attend this place? What kind of man goes to a church where these outlandish and outrageous statements are made? Does this NOT say something about Obama’s character?

In his “A More Perfect Union Speech” Obama said the following:

I can no more disown him (jeremiah Wright) than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother – a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.

These people are a part of me. And they are a part of America, this country that I love.

Now, Senator is Father Pfleger whom you have known for years in Chicago part of this community with which you associate and refuse to disown?

Senator, didn’t the Obama campaign transport Father Pfleger down to Iowa to campaign for you and isn’t Father Pfleger an active part of your campaign for President?

Most importantly does anyone see a pattern here?

Jeremiah Wright, Michael Pfleger, Trinity United Church of Christ, black liberation theology.

How many times will Obama have to apologize for what is being done and said in a church that he has refused to disown and that he continues to be a part?

As Flap said before this is GOP cannon fodder for the summer and fall television ads – if not by McCain, then by the 527’s. And, wait until Jeremiah Wright surfaces again.

Stay tuned…….
