This is what Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said in New York at the United Nations a few years ago.

“The United States empire is on its way down and it will be finished in the near future, inshallah,” Chavez told reporters, ending the statement with the Arabic phrase for “God willing.”

Chavez said that the United Nations is a “deceased” organization because it was formed to bridge the differences between the United States and Russia, and a brand new international organization would have to be formed to replace it.

Earlier, Chavez initiated a verbal assault on President Bush, calling him “the devil” during an insult-riddled address to world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly.

Maybe Chavez has a point. Does Obama get it?

Although I did not favour B. H. Obama for the presidency of the USA, I believe that, because of his charisma all over the world, he has a real chance of converting people who previously hated America.

Chavez is one of them and lets face it, George Bush was not popular in the world.

I do understand, as I am told, that Republicans prefer the world to hate rather than love America, but I believe every country needs friends especially in this globalised world where no nation can be an island.

Chavez actually said: “Obama, I want to be your friend.” What you should be fighting for is to get Obama to put conditions on that friendship that would be beneficial to America.

Nations and people do change, as George Bush said: “We have no permanent friends and no permanent enemies, just permanent interests”.
