    • The series of major water main breaks that occurred around Los Angeles last year was caused by the city's water conservation program, which put too much pressure on the city's aging cast iron pipes, according to a city report released Tuesday.

The report is a step forward in solving a mystery that bedeviled city officials and engineers and enraged some residents who had to endure the flooding and road damage.

A team of scientists charged with looking at the pipe breaks concluded that the city should rework its conservation plan, which limited the use of sprinklers to Mondays and Thursdays.

Flying back to Boston from LA yesterday, the congressman was assailed by a pair of ophthalmologists upset about the health care reform bill. An argument ensued that prompted some passengers to wonder if the plane might be forced to land.

    • Rep. John Culberson (R-TX) slammed Pres. Obama's decision to end the next phase of American manned space flight, calling it part of a pattern that has weakened the country.

In an interview with Hotline OnCall, Culberson said the admin's decision to cancel the Constellation program amounts to a surrender of the U.S.'s historic position as the global leader in space.

The Constellation program is billions of dollars over budget and years behind schedule. Obama's proposed budget, released in Feb., would cancel funding for the program. Without it, Culberson said, the U.S. will have no manned space flight capabilities in the future.

CA-Sen: Carly Fiorina Raises $1.7 Million for U.S. Senate Race

Former Hewlett-Packard CEO and California Republican U.S. Senate candidate Carly Fiorina has announced campaign fundraising totals for the first quarter.

Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina Tuesday said she raised $1.7 million since the beginning of the year in her effort to win the June 8 Senate Republican primary and face Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer this fall.

The money Fiorina has gotten from donors — $2.78 million since she began her campaign last year — only tells part of the story. The former executive has pumped $2.5 million of her own money into the campaign, bringing her total close to $5.3 million.

And with her campaign reporting $2.8 million cash on hand as of March 31, the close of the Federal Elections Commission reporting period, that means Fiorina has so far spent  nearly $2.5 million in her effort to beat former Rep. Tom Campbell and Irvine Assemblyman Chuck DeVore for the GOP nomination.

Fiorina’s fundraising total from donors is $100,000 more than Campbell, who reported  raising $1.6 million in the campaign he began in January.

Boxer, a three-term incumbent, announced Monday that her campaign raised $2.4 million in the first quarter, bringing her fundraising total for the campaign to more than $13 million.

So far no official word from the DeVore campaign on what he has raised although he told a town hall meeting Monday night that he raised about $600,000 during the first quarter. As of the end of 2009 DeVore had raised $1.2 million.

Not a stellar performance but in this down California economy and against an entrenched incumbent in a solid blue state, it is not bad. But, the real story is the amount of cash on hand available to Team Carly and her own deep pockets that can pump in another $2-3 million with the stroke of her pen.

Plus, I look for continued IE (independent expenditure) spending to attack RINO Tom Campbell closer to the election.

On a further note, Carly Fiorina raised in one quarter about what her opponent Chuck DeVore has raised total in over fifteen months. I continue to marvel why DeVore continues in this race. He polls third and is why behind in campaign cash.

Day By Day April 13, 2010 – Bend Over

Day By Day by Chris Muir

The April 15 deadline for federal tax filing is fast approaching and the Tea Party movement is out organizing protests. I remember the one last year in Ventura and this year economic conditions are even worse.

    Remember this protest sign?

Obviously, President Obama and Congressional Democrats have not received the message.

Gallup Daily tracking for the week ending April 11 puts Republicans slightly ahead of Democrats, 48% to 44%, in the congressional voting preferences of registered voters nationally. This marks the third week since the U.S. House passed healthcare reform on March 21 that the Republicans have tied or led the Democrats.

The November 2010 midterm Congressional and State of California elections cannot come soon enough for Ventura County voters. They will be marching to the ballot box and will NOT be bending over.
