    • President Obama will likely phone his predecessor, President George W. Bush, before delivering his speech Tuesday on the Iraq war.

Obama will visit troops in Fort Bliss, Texas, which is in Bush's home state, before returning to Washington to deliver his address from the Oval Office in the evening.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs acknowledged their divergent views on the Iraq war during the daily press briefing Monday, but said "I don't believe there are plans to see him, but my sense is, it will be one of the calls he makes tomorrow."

Obama also spoke with Bush before his Feb. 2009 speech that set the withdrawal date for combat troops.

Gibbs said Obama will not utter the words "mission accomplished," as Bush declared in 2003, and will stress during his speech that there is more work to be done in Iraq despite the end of combat phase of the war.

Bush did not say Mission Accomplished and I doubt Obama will thank Bush for anything

    • Longtime Dallas congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson has awarded thousands of dollars in college scholarships to four relatives and a top aide's two children since 2005, using foundation funds set aside for black lawmakers' causes.
The recipients were ineligible under anti-nepotism rules of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, which provided the money. And all of the awards violated a foundation requirement that scholarship winners live or study in a caucus member's district.

Johnson, a Democrat, denied any favoritism when asked about the scholarships last week. Two days later, she acknowledged in a statement released by her office that she had violated the rules but said she had done so "unknowingly" and would work with the foundation to "rectify the financial situation."

Rectify = pay the money back and resign from office?

      Doubtful…….

    • In the first Rasmussen Reports post-primary survey of West Virginia’s U.S. Senate race, Democratic Governor Joe Manchin attracts 48% of the vote while Republican businessman John Raese earns 42%.

The latest statewide telephone survey of Likely Voters shows four percent (4%) prefer some other candidate while seven percent (7%) are undecided.
      +++++++
Wow, this race may indeed become close in the GOP favorable election climate.

    • The Obama administration plans to set up an emergency loan program for the unemployed and a government mortgage refinancing effort in the next few weeks to help homeowners after home sales dropped in July, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan said.

“The July numbers were worse than we expected, worse than the general market expected, and we are concerned,” Donovan said on CNN’s “State of the Union” program yesterday. “That’s why we are taking additional steps to move forward.”

The administration will begin a Federal Housing Authority refinancing effort to help borrowers who are struggling to pay their mortgages, and will start an emergency homeowners’ loan program for unemployed borrowers so they can stay in their homes, Donovan said.

      The latest Obama bailout

More redistribution and didn't government involvement in the housing market start the current economic collapse?

Election 2010 Poll Watch: GOP Takes Unprecedented 10-Point Lead on Generic Ballot

I would gather the national Republican Party will do fairly well in the upcoming November elections.

Republicans lead by 51% to 41% among registered voters in Gallup weekly tracking of 2010 congressional voting preferences. The 10-percentage-point lead is the GOP’s largest so far this year and is its largest in Gallup’s history of tracking the midterm generic ballot for Congress.

hese results are based on aggregated data from registered voters surveyed Aug. 23-29 as part of Gallup Daily tracking. This marks the fifth week in a row in which Republicans have held an advantage over Democrats — one that has ranged between 3 and 10 points.

The Republican leads of 6, 7, and 10 points this month are all higher than any previous midterm Republican advantage in Gallup’s history of tracking the generic ballot, which dates to 1942. Prior to this year, the highest such gap was five points, measured in June 2002 and July 1994. Elections in both of these years resulted in significant Republican gains in House seats.

    Why?

American voters feel that something is VERY wrong with the direction of the United States. And, they will punish the incumbent Democratic Party of President Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

CA-Sen: Boxer Vs. Fiorina Debate Details

Republican Nominee Carly Fiorina and California Democrat Senator Barbara Boxer

In case you missed the details earlier about the Barbara Boxer Vs. Carly Fiorina debate this Wednesday evening here they are:

Saint Mary’s College of California will host the first U.S. Senatorial debate between incumbent Democrat Barbara Boxer and Republican challenger Carly Fiorina on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at 7 p.m. The one-hour debate will be held before a live audience in the College’s LeFevre Theatre and will be the first time both candidates will face off in an open forum.

Audience seats for the senate debate are by invitation only and are not available to the public. The reason for the invitation only format is that the venue for the debate is a small theater with only 300 seats. As such, tickets were allocated through the sponsoring media partners of KTVU, KQED and the San Francisco Chronicle. A portion of the seats in the audience have been reserved for current students at Saint Mary’s College.

The public is encouraged to watch or listen to the September 1 debate — from 7-8 p.m. — on KTVU Fox 2 Television or on KQED Public Radio (88.5 FM in San Francisco and 89.3 FM in Sacramento). It will also be streamed live on the internet on KTVU.com with links to SFGATE.com and KQED.org. The hour-long event is also being offered live to all California public radio stations in addition to individual television stations in each of the state’s 10 TV markets.

Sponsored by KTVU Channel 2 News, the San Francisco Chronicle and KQED Public Radio, the senate debate will be moderated by KTVU Political Editor Randy Shandobil and will include three veteran political journalists, including San Francisco Chronicle Political Reporter Carla Marinucci, La Opinion Senior Political Reporter Pilar Marrero and KQED Public Radio Host Scott Shafer.

I’ll try to remember to tweet up either the television and/or the audio links prior to the debate commencing.

I don’t think too many folks (besides the obvious partisans) are going to tune into this political donnybrook. But, there may be some interesting barbs thrown back and forth.

For a humorous look at the debate from a couple of white/gray haired (like me!) lefty LAMESTREAM media types, go here.

CA-Sen: Barbara Boxer’s Opponent is the Bad Economy?

Central Valley, California to Senator Barbara Boxer: We’ve Had Enough

Is it the bad California economy that will propel Republican Carly Fiorina to victory over Democrat Senator Barbara Boxer this November?

You know Sen. Barbara Boxer is in political trouble when she’s campaigning in Fresno and it’s 104 degrees. For much of the past six years, we haven’t seen much of Boxer in these parts. When Valley residents think U.S. senator, Democrat Dianne Feinstein usually comes to mind. She casts a long political shadow in the region, especially on water issues.

But on Monday and Tuesday, Fresno had Boxer’s attention. It’s not that the liberal Democrat expects to carry the conservative San Joaquin Valley in November, but she can’t let Republican opponent Carly Fiorina roll up huge margins here.

Giving up an extra few thousand votes in the Valley could be crucial in a tight statewide race. Boxer, the three-term senator, is in what the experts call a statistical tie with Fiorina in most public opinion polls. This year, Boxer knows every vote counts, even those outside of coastal California.

During her Fresno trip, Boxer touted the economic stimulus package, and how it’s helped Californians. That had the Fiorina campaign quickly countering that Fresno’s unemployment rate is at 16.2%, with 9,400 people having lost their jobs here since it was passed.

There undoubtedly would have been more job losses without the federal help, but that’s not an argument that Boxer wants to make. The economy is sinking her and other Democrats on the Nov. 2 ballot.

Well, she cannot blame President George W. Bush or a Republican controlled Congress any longer, now, can Boxer? The buck stops with her and President Obama.

Barbara Boxer has done very little except parrot far left wing dogma after decades in elected office. And, how many times has she visited her constituents in the Central Valley?

    Mighty few…….

Day By Day August 30, 2010 – I Can Haz Understandingz

Day By Day by Chris Muir

Talk about UNDERSTANDINGZ, did anyone catch President Obama’s teleprompter opportunity yesterday in New Orleans? Does anyone care?

President Obama traveled Sunday to New Orleans to mark the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s landfall on the Big Easy.

At the end of the First Family’s weeklong vacation on Martha’s Vineyard, Obama was met at the airport by Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R), New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu (D), Rep. Anh “Joseph” Cao (R-La.) and Rep. Charlie Melancon (D-La.).

The president’s motorcade took a lunch break at the Parkway Bakery and Tavern, a 100-year-old restaurant in the Mid-City neighborhood. Katrina dumped six feet of water in the bar and 10 feet on the street. The restaurant was able to reopen 46 days after the hurricane struck, and the owners built the rear of the building 19 feet higher to prevent flooding damage.

Obama, who apologized for cutting in line at the restaurant, ordered a shrimp sandwich and mingled with customers.

“We’re still here and we’re just gonna keep on building. We’re going to keep on working, all right?” Obama said, according to reports.

    Obama to the rescue?

Or is it all symbolism over substance?

Obama’s speech on the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina addressed the rebuilding of New Orleans and his commitment to clean up the BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico, but did not mention his administration’s decision to halt deepwater offshore exploration until Nov. 30.

The White House is reportedly considering an early end to the ban but Jindal wants to see a “greater sense of urgency” from the president. “The experts all agree, we can end this moratorium before six months,” he said. “Let’s put our people back to work.”

Jindal said he was going to meet on Monday with former Florida Sen. Bob Graham (D-Fla.), who co-chairs the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling Commission, to make that point. The first-term governor said he’s fine with increased inspections of the rigs off Louisiana’s coast; “what we’re saying is, a one-size-fits-all moratorium doesn’t make sense.”

The President is good at playing to a crowd but when it comes to policy he votes PRESENT. That is his UNDERSTANDINGZ.
