    • On his first full day on the job, Gov. Jerry Brown walked right up to the third rail of California politics. As he headed into a meeting with local government officials, he talked about how the state response to Proposition 13's limitations on property-tax rates have contributed to the state's financial dysfunction.

Brown's remarks come as he prepares to unveil a budget plan next week that will include proposals for unwinding the consolidation of government power in Sacramento that has taken place since voters approved the ballot measure in 1978, when Brown was first governor.

Brown's goal is to work with cities and counties to return many state government functions back to local governments.

      +++++++

Of course, he wants to repeal it and further grow the government —> city and county level

The problem will be a real estate price crash and a split roll which will be anti-business

    • The Ninth Circuit panel in the primary Prop 8 appeal has just issued an order certifying to the California supreme court a question of state law relating to the standing issue in the case.

The panel has stayed further proceedings in the case pending final action by the California supreme court on the certified question.

In addition, the panel has issued an opinion affirming in part and dismissing in part Imperial County’s separate appeal. Judge Reinhardt has also filed a concurring opinion that applies to both cases. And he’s issued his promised memorandum setting forth his reasons for not disqualifying himself.

There are a number of scenarios depending upon how the California supreme rules but all in all it is SCOTUS who will ultimately decide the case.

    • Unemployment rates rose in more than two-thirds of the nation's largest metro areas in November, a sharp reversal from the previous month and the most since June.

The Labor Department says unemployment rates rose in 258 of the 372 largest cities, fell in 88 and remained the same in 26. That's worse than the previous month, when the rate fell in 200 areas and rose in 108.

The Obama PORKULUS has failed and now the Congress must address the debt and regulation of business which is stifling job creation.

    • With Republican leaders anxious to set an austere tone for their ascendance into the House majority this week, the lavish fundraiser scheduled for Tuesday night at a trendy Washington hotel to benefit a dozen GOP freshmen is not exactly the populist image leaders are anxious to project.

House Speaker-elect John Boehner, whose name was featured on the invitation, is nonetheless skipping the event at the W Hotel, where lobbyists, political action committee managers and others paying the $2,500 ticket price will be treated to a performance by country music star LeAnn Rimes

    • Gov. Jerry Brown will spare K-12 schools from further drastic cuts in his budget – so long as voters extend higher income taxes in a special election, according to sources familiar with his proposal.

The tradeoff wouldn't cure education ills, and many districts would still face another year of fewer school days and larger class sizes. But it could avert even deeper cuts after years of school rollbacks and help Brown galvanize powerful education support for tax hikes in a June special election
      .
Brown plans to ask voters to extend higher tax rates on sales, vehicles and income. His proposal would send additional sales and vehicle tax money to counties as part of his plan to shift more responsibilities to local governments.

But Brown would keep the extra income tax revenue for the state, with a substantial portion going to education to offset that $2 billion cut. In his inaugural speech Monday, Brown singled out public schools as an area he wants to bolster in his return as governor.

    • John G. Roberts Jr., the chief justice of the Supreme Court, swore in President Obama – twice.

But Chief Justice Roberts is apparently bipartisan in his willingness to swear in federal employees.

On Tuesday morning, he presided over a closed-door ceremony in the offices of the soon-to-be House speaker, John A. Boehner of Ohio, to swear in the lawmaker’s staff a day before Republicans are scheduled to take control of the House chamber.

Employees of the federal government are all required to sign an oath as part of the paperwork they fill out when they are hired, according to Brendan Buck, a spokesman for Mr. Boehner.

Often, though, it’s a fairly routine signature, without the pomp and circumstance of a swearing-in ceremony. And even then, not all employees have the chief justice present. But it’s not entirely unheard of, either.

Nice of the Chief Justice to swear them in.

So, as I wrote six years ago, it did and it still does look to me as a renaissance of sorts is truly taking place. Understanding what this renaissance is all about and how you or your organization can best leverage it, is what this guide on real-time news curation is all about.

Here, in Part 2 of this guide, find out what are the key differences between aggregation and curation and why real-time news curation is so much better than automated aggregation when it comes to provide high-quality news and information on a specific topic.

Pelosi, Obama Hawaiian Vacations Come to an End, But Taxpayers Left with the Bill

Escorted throughout her trip by a mini security motorcade that included Secret Service and Hawaii County Police officers, Pelosi was seen at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Kailua-Kona, where she received Communion. Parishioners greeted her warmly, Hawaii Reporter was told. Two police SUVs were on guard outside the hotel during her week long stay.

Pelosi, who traveled to Hawaii by private plane, spent the holidays in Kona last year at the same hotel in an elaborate suite that reportedly rents for $10,000 a night.

The Four Seasons Resort Hualalai’s details its luxurious setting and amenities on its web site: “Gloriously revitalised, this natural tropical paradise offers more than ever to explore – with a newly expanded Spa, beachfront dining, fashion boutiques and new Deluxe Suites, in addition to Jack Nicklaus signature golf. Set on the Big Island’s exclusive Kona-Kohala Coast, this showpiece resort captures the essence of Hawaiian design, culture and tradition.”"

    And, look at Obama’s expenses:

In a Hawaii Reporter story published last week, some of the cost estimates included:

        * Obama’s round trip flight to Hawaii via Air Force One: $1 million (GAO estimates)
        * Mrs. Obama’s early flight to Hawaii: $63,000 (White House Dossier)
        * Housing in beachfront homes for Secret Service and Seals in Kailua ($1,200 a day for 14 days): $16,800
        * Costs for White House staff staying at Moana Hotel: $134,400 ($400 per day for 24 staff) – excluding meals and other room costs
        * Local police overtime: $250,000 (2009 costs reported by Honolulu Police Department)
        * Ambulance: $10,000 (City Spokesperson)
        * TOTAL COST: $1,474,200

    UNKNOWN COSTS

        * Rental of office building in Kailua on canal
        * Security upgrades and additional phone lines to private homes where Obama and friends are staying
        * Costs for car rentals and fuel for White House staff staying at Moana Hotel
        * Surveillance before the President arrives
        * Travel costs for Secret Service and White House staff traveling ahead of the President

Good grief – But typical …..One of the reasons the Democrats, including Pelosi were demoted last November.

President 2012 Poll Watch: Romney 41% Vs. Obama 41%, Christie 43% Vs Obama 40%, Huckabee 39% Vs. Obama 42%

Not a very good poll for the President.

On the Republican primary side it breaks out like this:

    • 27% Christie
    • 17% Romney
    • 16% Palin
    • 14% Huckabee
    • 5% Daniels
    • 2% Pawlenty
    • 2% Thune

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie who has said he would not be a candidate is doing the best but all of the Republican contenders are within the ballpark.

The poll, conducted from Dec. 30, 2010 to Jan. 3, 2011, shows Christie leads among conservative Republicans with 28%, followed by Palin (18%), Huckabee (15%) and Romney (14%). Christie also leads among Born-Again Christians with 27%. He also does well with moderate Republicans (23%). Romney leads that group with 28%.

Looking at age groups, Christie does best with those 18-29 (36%) and 30-49 (33%).

Both Christie and Romney lead Obama among independent voters. For Christie, that margin is 42%-29%; and for Romney, 39%-31%. Of the listed Republicans, Palin does the worst against Obama among independents, losing 38%-32%.

Obama loses to each of the Republicans among voters over age 65; and trails by the biggest margins to Romney (51%-38%) and Christie (49%-39%).

The Ronald Reagan Centennial: My Father at 100

The Ronald Reagan Centennial is only 32 days away – the weekend of February 6th – President Ronald Reagan’s 100th birthday.  And, what better to celebrate than with a new book about President Reagan by his son, Ron.

February 6, 2011, is the one hundredth anniversary of Ronald Reagan’s birth. To mark the occasion, Ron Reagan has written My Father at 100, an intimate look at the life of his father-one of the most popular presidents in American history-told from the perspective of someone who knew Ronald Reagan better than any adviser, friend, or colleague. As he grew up under his father’s watchful gaze, he observed the very qualities that made the future president a powerful leader. Yet for all of their shared experiences of horseback rides and touch football games, there was much that Ron never knew about his father’s past, and in My Father at 100, he sets out to understand this beloved, if often enigmatic, figure who turned his early tribulations into a stunning political career.

Since his death in 2004, President Reagan has been a galvanizing force that personifies the values of an older America and represents an important era in national history. Ron Reagan traces the sources of these values in his father’s early years and offers a heartfelt portrait of a man and his country-and his personal memories of the president he knew as “Dad.”

Sarah Palin Planning Spring Israel Trip

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, left, shakes hands with Gosselin twins, Cara, right, and Mady, as their mother Kate Gosselin looks on as the Palins and the Gosselins go on a camping trip in Coffee Creek, Alaska, during a taping of ‘Sarah Palin’s Alaska.’

Yeah, Sarah cannot see Israel from her house.

Sarah-the-will-she-go-won’t-she-go-for-Obama’s-job-Palin is in travel mode. We’re not talking Washington. For now it’s fie on a bus trip to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. She’s planning to go farther. Miss Sarah can’t see Israel from her house so, even if she lacks mileage, she’s organizing a see-all, hear-all, know-all, meet-all, learn-all, tell-all first plane ride to the Holy Land. This lady knows on which side her votes are buttered.

The journey, transportation, accommodations, schedule, appointments to see VIPs, the faithful who accompany her, are being arranged as we speak. Target date’s springtime.

Bolstering some foreign policy bonafides while folks speculate as to her future. I suspect this will not be her only offshore trip this year.

Indiana Rep. Mike Pence to Run for President in 2012?

Indiana Congressman Mike Pence, rumored as a possible GOP presidential contender in 2012, headlined a multi-county event in eastern Iowa Friday night before heading to western Iowa to campaign on behalf of U.S. Rep. Steve King. Note this is from July 2009.

    No, I don’t think so.

MIke Pence will run for Indiana Governor
, replacing GOP Governor Mitch Daniels, who may indeed run for President.

U.S. Rep. Mike Pence is scheduling Republican Lincoln Days Dinner all over Indiana, Howey Politics Indiana has learned.

It is the best clue yet that he is preparing to launch a 2012 Indiana gubernatorial campaign, as opposed to seeking the presidency. “He is scheduling larger counties,” a Republican source told HPI on Monday.

“If he is running for President, it would be an interesting and novel strategy. We could call it the Win Indiana Strategy!”

If Pence were to launch a presidential campaign, he would be more likely to spend this winter and spring in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina – the key early primary and caucus states.

Pence spokesman Matt Lloyd told HPI over the weekend that the congressman has not scheduled any media events to announce future plans. The GOP field cleared just before Christmas when Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman announced she would not run due to “minor health problems.”

Pence has also been the center of presidential speculation after winning a conservative straw poll last August. Pence opting to run for governor would then potentially pave the way for Gov. Mitch Daniels to enter the presidential race.

With Obama rising slightly in the polls, why not obtain executive experience by serving as Indiana Governor and bide your political time.  Pence will run for Indiana Governor.

And, Eric Erickson at Red State will have to choose again.

Day By Day January 4, 2011 – RINO Call

Day By Day by Chris Muir

POLS, whether Republican or NOT, must learn that the message of last November’s elections was to stop and then cut federal government spending. The private business sector has been squeezed and needs to be revitalized with initiative and less government intrusion. Otherwise, employment will not improve.

Haven’t the economic lessons of the Reagan Revolution of the 1980’s been learned?

Bill Clinton certainly knows since he was the main beneficiary of Reagan’s economic and national defense policies.
