Day By Day March 15, 2011 – Mileage

Day By Day by Chris Muir

Chris, the rising gasoline prices and the lack of an Obama Administration energy policy may replace unemployment as a major 2012 Presidential campaign issue.

As the polls show, Americans are increasingly preferring domestic oil production, including ANWR. But, President Obama is having none of this as he clings to the radical environmentalism of the Far Left.

The Republican nominee WILL present American voters an alternative.

    And, it is about time.

Poll Watch: Six in Ten Americans Favor Increasing U.S. Oil Drilling

This is not really surprising with the turmoil in the Middle East and America’s dependency on foreign oil. Why not “Drill, Baby, Drill” if it can be done in an envirnomentally sensitive way?

Last year’s finding was recorded about a month after the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig off the U.S. Gulf Coast that resulted in a massive oil spill. News of that incident has faded, possibly lessening Americans’ resistance to coastal area drilling. At the same time, recent turbulence in the Middle East has caused oil prices to rise and has sparked discussion about the stability of the United States’ foreign oil supply.

The latest findings are from Gallup’s annual Environment survey, conducted March 3-6. The same poll shows 49% of Americans in favor of opening Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) for oil exploration. This is up slightly from 43% in the previous measurement in 2008, and is the highest level of support Gallup has recorded for drilling in ANWR since the question was first asked in 2002.

Extracting energy for millions of Americans is not an easy undertaking. Americans like their cars and their other conveniences/toys powered by electricity. But, we understand being dependent upon countries that don’t like us so much, is not good for our national security.

In keeping with this understanding, Americans are more concerned about the availability and affordability of energy.

So, what does this mean, particularly since nuclear energy generation of electricity with the Japanese earthquake, Tsunami catastrophe will probably face intensive regulatory scrutiny?

A solid majority of Americans currently favor increased offshore oil drilling in U.S. coastal areas and a record-high 49% favor opening the Alaskan wilderness to oil exploration. These trends might best be understood in terms of Americans’ ongoing anxiety about the nation’s economic problems coupled with their expectation that today’s already elevated gas prices will continue to rise. While Americans care about environmental protection — 61% in 2010 called themselves active in or sympathetic to the environmental movement — the possible benefits of achieving greater oil independence may be gaining appeal.

Sarah Palin Watch: Drill at ANWR

    sarahpalinjune23a

During “Citizen Weeds Warrior Kickoff,” Governor Palin signs HB 330 “Noxious Weeds & Invasive Plants” at Russian Jack Park in Anchorage, Alaska on June 17, 2008 while flanked by (back left) Rep. Craig Johnson and members of Civilians Against Noxious Weeds Invading the North (CANWIN).

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has sent a letter to Congress asking them to open a small portion of the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve (ANWR) to oil and gas development.

In a letter addressed to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and key members of Congress, Governor Palin stressed the need to enact an energy policy that includes oil and gas production from domestic sources, since failure to enact a sound energy policy is having real-life consequences. The Governor reminded members of Congress that the footprint of development would be less than 2,000 acres. She also assured members that any development would be conducted in a responsible and environmentally safe manner.

    The letter is here.

Damn, a conservative GOP leader who understands that oil and gas must be produced domestically to reduce our dependence on foreign sources.

    John McCain are you listening?

A Vice President Sarah Palin would put your administration more in line with the Congressional GOP on oil exploration. How about modifying your stance on ANWR and then choose Palin as your VP?

It would be a winning ticket.

Senate GOP Blocks Oil Windfall Profits Tax

Michael Ramirez on oil and gas prices

Michael Ramirez on Congress and Oil

United States Senate Republicans today blocked an attempt by Senate Demcorats to impose a windfall profits tax on American oil companies.

But the Democrats had to try to overcome staunch Republican opposition to any new taxes on the oil industry. The five largest U.S. oil companies earned $36 billion during the first three months of the year.

Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., needed 60 votes Tuesday to proceed with the oil tax legislation in the face of a threatened GOP filibuster.

A Republican energy plan, rejected by the Senate last month, calls for opening a coastal strip of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to oil development and to allow states to opt out of the national moratorium that has been in effect for a quarter century against oil and gas drilling in more than 80 percent of the country’s coastal waters.

The Democrats including Barack Obama who supports this taxation are a pathetic bunch. Why do they want to go back to Jimmy Carter days and tax big oil to increase supply and relieve gasoline prices?

Did not work then and will not work now.

Flap remembers the gas lines, the shortages and the rationing.

Earth to the Democrats: Drill for oil and build new refineries while pushing conservation and alternative energy sources.

If the Democrats had NOT blocked drilling in ANWR eight years ago when President Bush and the GOP proposed it, we wold be receiving oil today from the site.

But, the Democrats control Congress and what have they done about HIGH gasoline prices?

    NOTHING but tax……..

Elton Gallegly Watch: Time to Drill in ANWR

    Michael Ramirez on ANWR

Flap’s Congressman writes an opinion piece for the Ventura County Star: Time to Drill in ANWR.

Conservation has an immediate impact, but is only part of the solution. Alternative fuels will take time and even then may not fully replace oil for all our energy needs. Therefore, if we are to reduce our reliance on foreign supplies, we must produce more domestic oil.

Flash back 28 years, when President Carter — a proud Democrat — set aside a small portion of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for “exploration and development” of oil and natural gas resources. An estimated 10.4 billion barrels of recoverable oil lies beneath its frozen tundra.

It has been time for almost thirty years that this domestic energy resource be developed.

However, it is ONLY when Americans make a choice between alternative sources of transportation, conservation and lifestyle changes will there be a start towards energy independence. The marketplace WILL play a role as gasoline prices skyrocket.

ANWR drilling is a stop-gap measure at best but it is better than the alternative – which so far has been nothing.
