GOP Senators Collins, Specter and Snowe: COMRADES of the Month

The conservative Club for Growth has named GOP Senators Collins, Specter and Snowe fellow “travellers” or Comrades of the Month because of their vote for increased government spending in President Obama’s Economic Stimulus Bill.

One day after Club for Growth President Pat Toomey said he may challenge Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) in a 2010 primary, the group’s members have voted Specter as the group’s “Comrade of the Month” along with Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Olympia Snow (R-ME) for their votes in favor of President Obama’s stimulus package.

“While Senators Specter, Collins, and Snowe tout the stimulus bill as a compromise, it was more of a capitulation to the Democrats than anything else.  Had these three senators voted with the rest of their party, President Obama would have been forced to engage the Republicans in a genuine compromise.  Instead, American taxpayers are saddled with an $800 billion bill that will do little to stimulate the economy,” Club for Growth Executive Director David Keating said in the group’s press release.

The latest polls from Pennsylvania indicate Senator Specter who is up in 2010 is in trouble. Obviously, the Club for Growth will ONLY exacerbate his problems.

Pat Toomey to Challenge GOP Senator Arlen Specter in Pennsylvania Primary Race?

    pat toomey

Former GOP Congressman and Club for Growth President Pat Toomey

Looks like there may be a re-match of the race from six years ago in which Toomey lost in the Republican primary election by ONLY 1.7%.

Former Congressman Pat Toomey (R, PA-15), current Club for Growth President, just announced on Bobby Gunther Walsh’s 1-On-1 Show, WAEB, 790AM, that a Primary challenge to Senator Arlen Specter is “now back on the table.”

Mr. Toomey acknowledged that “Senator Specter cast the deciding vote on the very worrisome stimulus Bill, when he could have negotiated with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and President Obama for more productive tax cuts and less wasteful spending.” Pennsylvanians need to do some soul searching about who will really represent us in the Senate.

The latest poll is unfavorable for Specter winning re-election.

Senator Arlen Specter in Trouble in Pennsylvania Polling – Is Specter TOAST?

    Arlen Specter and Biden

Vice President Joe Biden, center right, and Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., center left, shake hands as Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Pa., left and Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., applaud during a reception at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Friday, Feb. 27, 2009. The reception was held to honor Specter for his vote for the economic stimulus package

Vice President Joe Biden joked the other night that maybe GOP Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter should re-register as a Democrat.

The latest poll numbers from Pennsylvania reveal even that we would not help him win re-election.

A new statewide poll shows 53 percent of Pennsylvanians — and 66 percent of Republicans — want someone to replace Sen. Arlen Specter.

Asked whether they think Specter, a Philadelphia Republican, has done his job well enough to win re-election or whether they’d prefer a “new person” in that job, registered voters by a 53-38 percent margin said it’s time to give someone else a chance, according to the poll by Susquehanna Polling and Research. Eight percent were undecided.

The numbers might reflect Specter’s vote as one of three Republican senators who enabled passage of President Obama’s $787 billion federal stimulus package, said James Lee, president of Harrisburg-based Susquehanna polling. But they reflect long-standing dissatisfaction among Republican conservatives with Specter’s record, he said.

The Pennsylvania Republican Party should be considering a primary challenge to Specter – because it looks like he is TOAST.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele Says He’s Open to Cut Off Specter, Collins and Snow from GOP Funds

RNC Chairman Michael Steele told Neil Cavuto that he is open to cutting GOP funding for the 3 Senate traitors who voted for the largest spending bill in US history. Steele says he will wait and see what the state GOP parties decide about the traitors. Senators Specter, Snowe and Collins voted in favor of the trillion dollar pork-bloated bill.

Good bloviating by Steele but when the rubber meets the road, it is ONLY the 8o year old Specter who is up in 2010 that this really affects. The GOP will eventually lose these three sets in the Northeast unless they rebuild the party and recruit some better candidates.

So, the GOP has a dilemma.

Exit Question: Does the RNC support moderate U.S.Senators who are meeting the needs of their blue state constituents and vote GOP most of the time or do they throw incumbent and long-time Senators over the side because of a few votes?

Poll Watch: 58 Per Cent Say Congress Will NOT Understand Obama Economic Stimulus Bill BEFORE They Vote

    ramirez toon021009
    Political Cartoon from Michael Ramirez

The latest Rasmussen poll says that a majority of members of congress will not understand what is in the Democrat/Obama Economic Stimulus Bill before they vote on it.

The Senate is scheduled to vote today on an $838-billion economic stimulus plan, but 58% of U.S. voters say most members of Congress will not understand what is in the plan before they vote on it.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that just 24% believe most of Congress will understand the contents of the 700-page-plus plan before they vote. Nineteen percent (19%) are not sure.

Two-thirds of the nation’s voters (69%) lack confidence that Congress knows what it is doing when it comes to addressing the country’s current economic problems. Just 29% are even somewhat confident in the legislators.

Fifty-two percent (52%) of Democrats have at least some confidence, a view shared by just 16% of unaffiliated voters and 12% of Republicans.

Some of the provisions of the bill include the imposition of UK type Cost-Effectiveness Standards for Medicare which could lead to rationing of American health care.

When questioned about these provisions on Fox News Channel this morning, GOP Senator Arlen Specter (R-Pennsylvania) looked like a deer caught in a car’s headlights. He was DUMB-STRUCK.

Senator Specter, who sold-out the Republican Party and was one of three Republicans that allowed the bill avoid a Senate filibuster had absolutely NO IDEA what was in the bill.

Flap suspects there will be more “stealth” surprises as the bill emerges from the House-Senate Conference Committee. And, no, most members of Congress will NOT know what is in the $1.2 Trillion bill.

Rasmussen: Arlen Specter 46% Vs. Chris Matthews 43% – Does Retirement Loom for Specter?

    Arlen Specter November 20 2008

Senator Specter speaks at a press conference announcing a bipartisan proposal to support the automotive industry, November 20, 2008

    Good grief, Chris Matthews?

It would be a difficult race for Arlen Specter to win because of his age (Specter will be 80 in 2010) and illness – cancer but with these poll numbers will he now retire?

Republican Senator Arlen Specter is potentially vulnerable in his 2010 bid for re-election. A Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Pennsylvania voters finds Specter leading MSNBC pundit Chris Matthews by just three percentage points, 46% to 43%, in a match-up that may foreshadow one of the nation’s most closely-watched Senate races.

Matthews, whose handling of the presidential campaign drew loud complaints of bias from Republicans, has expressed interest in the race. His contract with MSNBC expires next year.

Mark this Senate seat as a likely Democrat pick-up unless Matthews GAFFES his way against a REAL Democrat contender in the  primary election.

    Stay tuned…..

The Spectre of Chris Matthews as Pennsylvania’s Next United States Senator

Ellen explains how dancing with MSNBC’s host of “Hardball” Chris Matthews got out of hand.

If Chris Matthews has indeed talked to Democrat Party consultants about facing off against incumbent Pennsylvania GOP Senator Arlen Specter he should relinquish his “Hardball” Show.

The Patriot News reports the MSNBC host is “continues to talk with top Democrats about the possibility” of running for Senate in 2010 against Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Penn.

Matthews, 62, met with Democratic State Committee Chairman T.J. Rooney and executive director Mary Isenhour in Washington, D.C. “to discuss the logistics involved in a Senate run. Isenhour said she left that meeting convinced Matthews has not made up his mind about running.”

Would Matthews make the best candidate against Specter who is OLD and had cancer for years now?

    Who knows?

But, it is unlikely his show can be viewed as impartial, particularly in this Senate race until Matthews makes up his mind whether to run or not. Of course, he would rather “milk” his announcement and stay on the tube as long as he can.

NBC News should force his hand.

    In or out, Chris?
