CA-36: Janice Hahn Gang Intervention Flap Not Over

And, it is all Janice Hahn’s fault since her lawyers picked a fight with Los Angeles Fox Television Channel 11.

Back in the early part of the last decade, America, and especially California, was living high on a speculative real estate bubble. Local and state governments were absolutely awash in tax receipts and felt, you know, we can probably afford just about any crazy idea you can come up with. Councilwoman Hahn became a cheerleader for just about the craziest idea since we decided to turn food into fuel; paying gang members to be ‘gang intervention specialists.’ What could go wrong?

As the above local news report shows, quite a lot, actually. Supporting this program was a dumb move. But, hey, politicians were on something of a spending bender back then, so maybe we can just chalk it up to a ‘youthful indiscretion.’ Dumber, though, and harder to explain away, was Hahn walking out of an interview when first confronted about the program in 2008.

Dumbest of all, though, is Hahn firing up her lawyers to go after the news organization reporting on the story. These Clarence Darrows actually tried to use a “Cease and Desist” threat against a news station…over a news story. This isn’t just dumb, this is a terrible, horrible, no-good, very-bad-day kind of dumb.

But, this is all noise and many of the South Bay voters have already voted by mail – and voted for Craig Huey.

Craig Huey WILL turn out his voters and the economy is so poor and unemployment so high, the race will be close. Folks are going to vote their pocketbooks and for a change.

Plus, the GOTV campaign for Craig Huey which is aided by the California GOP will be awesome.

As, I have said, do not be surprised if Craig Huey upsets Janice Hahn on Tuesday.

CA-36: Craig Huey Says Anti-Janice Hahn Video Hurt His Campaign

Yes, having known Craig Huey for over 45 years this is definitely not him. Huey is not a name caller or a sensationalist, despite what the Democrats try to spin.

Southern California congressional candidate Craig Huey said Thursday an inflammatory viral web video that portrayed Janice Hahn as a stripper has been “harmful” to his campaign and pledged to fire any member of his staff who had knowledge of it.

The issue was raised during a debate on public radio between Huey and Hahn, just five days ahead of the special election to replace former Rep. Jane Harman.

“It’s racist, it’s sexist, it’s bigoted. It’s the most harmful thing to my campaign ever done,” Huey said when asked about the video produced by the third-party group Turn Right USA.

The GOP candidate denied any involvement with the video and said he would terminate any member of his staff who was found to be coordinating with the outside group.

Just as dispicable was Joe Trippi’s last minute attack using Huey’s marketing clients as guilt by association.

Huey called a Hahn charge that that he bilked seniors with a marketing scheme “guilt by association,” and snuck in a not-very-subtle gang reference. “It’s like a dentist had a gang member come in … and all of a sudden that dentist is part of a drug cartel,” he said.

But, hey, that is politics where half-truths and embellishments are all too common. But, the difference is Huey had no control over the anti-Hahn ad and Joe Trippi works for the Hahn campaign.

South Bay residents will vote their pocketbook anyway and ignore all of this noise.

Will Craig Huey pull an upset?

I say look for an earthquake in CA-36 next Tuesday night.

CA-36: California Early Voting Forecasts a Close Race for Craig Huey Vs. Janice Hahn

Los Angeles City Council Member Janice Hahn and GOP Congressional Nominee and businessman Craig Huey

As, I have said before, this will be a tight race and I would not be surprised if Craig Huey pulls the upset.

Early Republican turnout in the special election for an open Southern California House seat is keeping pace with Democrats, indicating that Craig Huey may be on the verge of a midsummer surprise.

According to a Friday tally compiled by the registrar’s office and provided to POLITICO by the Huey campaign, Republican ballots are trailing Democratic ballots in the 36th Congressional District by just 692 votes.

The early vote tabulations as of Friday, by party:

    Republican/Libertarian – 13,343

    Democratic/Green – 14,035

    Non-affiliated – 5,512

While it’s impossible to know how many early voters crossed their own party affiliation, the numbers are the latest evidence that Huey is running a much closer race with Democrat Janice Hahn than most expected.

It’s an difference of just 2 percent, and it has Huey’s campaign invigorated as they head into the final stretch before the July 12 runoff.

Notes a Huey adviser, “It’s very tight.  We lost in absentees in the primary and beat her at the polls on election day.”

The Hahn campaign responded by saying that the Decline to State or Non-affiliated voters should break 70-30% for Hahn, but I think that is a real reach.

The fact remains that Huey will run a good GOTV (Get Out the Vote) campaign for this summer-time special election and Republicans/Libertarians/conservatives, while a minority in the district, WILL turn put to vote.

One week to go and this race is very close.

CA-36: Craig Huey Vs. Janice Hahn – Little Voter Persuasion Going On

110630hahnhueyap328 CA 36: Is Janice Hahn Out of Campaign Cash?

Los Angeles City Council Member Janice Hahn and GOP Congressional Nominee and businessman Craig Huey
In the waning days of a special election Congressional race (July 12th), there is little persuasion and a whole lot of contrast between Craig Huey and Janice Hahn.

The 36th Congressional District race does not lack contrasting views from its two candidates, and perhaps none seem so stark as their differences on the subjects of creating jobs and reducing the deficit.

Summarized, the plans of Democrat Janice Hahn and Republican Craig Huey mostly follow familiar party lines.

Hahn’s jobs blueprint relies heavily on government subsidization of programs and initiatives that she says will help create 25,000 “green” jobs in the district by 2018.

Her deficit-busting ideas include returning troops home from conflicts overseas – saving $10billion a month – ending Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy and eliminating tax breaks for corporations that send jobs overseas.

Huey, a Tea Party favorite, holds to the legacy left by President Ronald Reagan.

Lowering taxes, Huey says, will encourage private employers to hire and grow. Dispensing with regulations that are “destroying businesses” will have the same effect.

Huey wants to rein in “out of control” spending as a first solution to getting employment and the economy moving forward. Along that line, he has identified $200 billion in what he considers overlapping bureaucracy, including 80 transportation programs, 56 financial literacy programs, 44 federal job-training efforts and 15 food safety groups.

If both offerings look ideologically Democrat and Republican, it’s by design, said Allan Hoffenblum, a former GOP strategist who now
co-edits the nonpartisan elections guide, the California Target Book.

With little time to campaign, Hahn and Huey push views that are ambrosia to the type of party voter who will come out to cast a ballot in the July 12 special election.

“There’s very little voter persuasion going on,” Hoffenblum said. “This is R versus D.”

This race will boil down to who turns out for this election. Huey will turn out his Republican/Libertarian/Social Conservative base and it is uncertain whether Hahn will be able to turn out traditional Democratic constituencies, like Big Labor and African Americans. Even with a large 16 point Democratic registrationa advantage, it her voters stay home, Craig Huey will win.

And, remember this district will likely change for 2012 and more than likely become less Democratic.

CA-36: Is Janice Hahn Out of Campaign Cash?

Los Angeles City Council Member Janice Hahn and GOP Congressional Nominee and businessman Craig Huey

Hard to say but parsing the records, the San Francisco Chronicle makes the case that she is struggling with campaign cash going into the last week of the campaign. The South Bay Congressional Special election is July 12th.

A Democrat in a Southern California House race is spending money faster than she is taking it in, leaving her campaign scratching for cash as the July 12 election approaches.

Records reviewed Friday show Janice Hahn had $323,000 in the bank as of June 22 for her campaign against Republican Craig Huey in the 36th Congressional District.

But she ran up nearly the same amount in unpaid bills.

If they were paid, Hahn would have $44 as of that date.

Hahn’s campaign says they have raised an additional $200K since the filing but that still leaves her with about as much money as Craig Huey (who wrote another big check a few days ago).

Updated: Craig Huey Writes Another Big Check – CA-36: Janice Hahn Shows Fundraising Lead in July 12 Special Congressional Election

Los Angeles City Council Member Janice Hahn and GOP Congressional Nominee and businessman Craig Huey

According to the latest financial reports.

Janice Hahn doubled up on Craig Huey for the last two months of fundraising for the Southern California special House election, according to campaign finance reports provided to POLITICO.

A spokesman for Huey said he will report $323,000 in receipts from April 28 to June 22. Hahn took in $676,932 for the same period.

The Los Angeles Democrat also has a substantial cash-on-hand lead, with $326,338 remaining in the bank for the final week and a half.

Hueys campaign did not indicate whether his campaign figures included any of his own personal funds.

One of two things will happen.

Either Craig Huey will write the big check of $250K after today and be on spending par with Hahn the last week or his polling shows him behind and he will shut down the self-financing.

With about a week to go in the campaign, we will know how the race shapes up, if the big money from Huey comes in from his own bank account.

And, I have to repeat, this is an overwhelmingly registered Democratic District and it is a tough race for Craig Huey. The real campaign may come in 2012 when this CD is changed via reapportionment redistricting.

    Update:

Craig Huey has written a one half installment of the big check having loaned his campaign another $100K on June 24th, two days after the June 22nd filing deadline. It looks like the spending will continue and this race is competitive.

In addition to the loans to himself, Huey had raised $144,120 by the end of the reporting period, bringing his total campaign fund to $839,514. He had $56,526 left in his treasury.

But Huey, too, has continued to add to his coffers since the latest reporting period, notices filed with the FEC showed.  On June 24 he donated $100,000 to campaign.  He also has received $5,000 from the California Republican Party and $10,000 from others in the last few days.

CA-36: Janice Hahn’s Flack Joe Trippi Now Calling Craig Huey An Extreme Scam Artist

Video from the Democrat Janice Hahn for Congress Campaign

Joe Trippi, a renown Democratic Party strategist and the media consultant for the Janice Hahn for Congress campaign must be getting desperate in the CA-36 Congressional District race. I mean, my gosh, look at the tripe he is promoting.

The article on which Trippi makes most of his claims comes from this poorly sourced piece over at the LA Weekly rag. I mean quoting/sourcing comments from a blog and an anonymous blog post.

    Please.

And, Joe trying to scare South Bay senior citizens with your “Mediscare” tactics are just not going to stick.

The Hahn’s campaign polling in this “safe” Democratic district must have Janice Hahn losing by a few points or who knows – probably more.

CA-36: Janice Hahn Refuses to Mention She is a Democrat in Television Ads – Something Going On in This Race?

When the lefty site Daily Kos makes a mention on this race between Craig Huey and Janice Hahn in California Congressional District 36 that something is going on, one has to wonder.

Democrat Janice Hahn has two new “contrast” ads out — spots which start by attacking Craig Huey for his extremism and finish by touting Hahn’s own credentials. Something must really be up in this race, because the second ad (both are available at the link) focuses on Hahn’s “non-partisan” credentials and both shy away from mentioning her party affiliation. If an out-and-proud Democrat is having a hard time winning in this district… just oy.

Well, there has been little buzz about this race lately and no “leaked” internal polling. I suspect this race is close.

Remember this is a July 12th special election and Craig Huey WILL turn out his conservative/Republican voters even though they are badly outnumbered in CA-36.

    An upset in the making?

CA-36: Janice Hahn Running New Television Ads Against Craig Huey

This ad is acutally pretty weak and wonder if Hahn’s polling with her first attack ad compating Huey to Sarah Palin proved to be a negtive to her in her polling?

But, then Hahn comes back with this one which is decidedly more negative.

So, I guess Los Angeles City Councilwoman is covering her bets with a “good cop” vs. “bad cop” series of ads.

With two weeks to go, I wonder with what Craig Huey will counter. Whatever, it should be hard hitting.

    Stay tuned…..
