CA-36: Janice Hahn Files Federal Elections Commission Complaint Against Craig Huey

For a video, Craig Huey did not produce and has denounced as racist and sexist. I mean how stupid is this?

Democratic congressional candidate Janice Hahn has filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission over a widely criticized hip-hop-themed video that links her to street-gang members.

That ad, which makes rampant use of stereotypical hip-hop video imagery and features Hahn’s face superimposed onto the body of a stripper, was produced by a new third-party political action committee called Turn Right USA.

Hahn’s complaint alleges Turn Right is working with the campaign of Hahn’s challenger in the race in California’s 36th Congressional District, Republican Craig Huey.

Huey’s camp has denounced the ad, as have other Republicans, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and advocacy groups such as the National Organization for Women.

Hahn, a Los Angeles City Council member, and Huey are competing to replace retired Rep. Jane Harman in the Southern California coastal district. The election is July 12.

Her complaint notes that a one-time volunteer for Huey, G. Rick Marshall, is a principal working for Turn Right, a so-called “Super PAC” that can raise unlimited funds from donors whose identities remain private.

FEC rules prohibit such committees from coordinating their efforts directly with political campaigns.

The video contains a disclaimer that the PAC isn’t affiliated with the Huey campaign, and the filmmaker behind the ad, Ladd Ehlinger Jr., said there’s no connection. In fact, Ehlinger said Huey was missing an opportunity to use the ad, which ties Hahn to an L.A. County gang intervention program, to his advantage.

“What they should have done is say ‘We denounce the ad but we think it has a kernel of truth,’” Ehlinger said.

Ehlinger said the controversy, as well as the FEC complaint, was playing right into his hands—racheting up interest in the video, which has already enjoyed about half a million hits on YouTube.

It is apparent Janice Hahn is just fanning the flames of this controversy so that no one really will make an investigation into the paying gangsters allegation. Hahn is in a tough race and wants to slime Huey with as much as she can.

The economy is so poor in this South Bay District and Janice Hahn’s ads so ugly, I continue to think that Craig Huey may surprise with an upset win.

CA-36: Janice Hahn’s Ugly Campaign Against Craig Huey Turning Off Voters

Pretty typical of Janice Hahn and the desperate California Democrats to slime Republican Craig Huey – see the mailer graphic above.

But, what they didn’t foresee is how it is turning off voters.

This upcoming special election on July 12 has me in a quandary. I’m a Democrat, but I can’t bring myself to vote for Hahn, our Los Angeles councilwoman, because  I know all that she has not done for our community.

After Hahn’s more than a decade on the City Council, Los Angeles continues to struggle with financial issues and a pile of other nasty problems while she fiddles with issues such as the Arizona boycott because of the Grand Canyon state’s stance on immigration. But what disturbs me the most are all the things Hahn could have done in her own backyard.

Hahn has done so little about serious issues that it’s hampered growth in our area. Yet she deplores Huey in her campaign for his anti-abortion stance and claims he’s too much like Sarah Palin.

That must mean she can’t dig up better, more worthwhile issues.

As I’ve watched our community deteriorate under Hahn’s watch, I can’t imagine what she could do for us in Congress–if anything.  You get what you vote for.

Well, if this Democrat elects to stay home and others do the same Janice Hahn may be in deep trouble.

The fact is Janice Hahn has been an abysmal POL, trading on her old man’s name and using the unions to bash her way into office. Look at what has happened in her council district and Southern California and tell me whether she really deserves a promotion.

Fanning the flames in order to raise campaign cash.

Meanwhile, Republican Craig Huey accused Hahn of fanning the flames of an inflammatory web video that portrayed her as a stripper that let gang members out of prison.

“The only one keeping this vile video alive is Janice Hahn. She is the one circulating it and she is even using it to raise money. It is disgusting that she would stoop so low. The only plausible explanation is that she is frantic about her prospects of winning,” said Huey consultant Dave Gilliard.

Noooo, Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn would never do that, now would she?

CA-36: Democrats Now Raising Money and Capitalizing on Controversial Ad Denounced by Craig Huey

LA City Councilwoman Janice Hahn (D) and Businessman Craig Huey (R) who will face off on July 12, 2011 in CA-36, Jane Harman’s Congressional District

You remember the flap and Craig Huey’s denunciation of the controversial video. But, while having nothing to do with the viral web video, the Democrats are trying to capitalize on it.

Democrats are trying to capitalize on a controversial ad attacking Janice Hahn, the party’s nominee for a congressional seat in Los Angeles, that has been denounced as racist and sexist.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee says the ad, depicting Hahn as a pole dancer and black men as gangsters using derogatory language, is “despicable.” The video by a political action committee called Turn Right USA suggests that Hahn, a Los Angeles City councilwoman, has not been tough on gangs.

The DCCC hopes to raise $150,000 by Monday to fight what it calls “vile right-wing attacks like these.”

“An attack on women and minorities this blatant and offensive deserves our strongest grass-roots response,” DCCC executive director Robby Mook says in a fundraising e-mail.

So, the Democrats are talking out of both sides of their mouths.

Hahn campaign spokesman Dave Jacobson said Huey still has not gone far enough.

“Craig Huey still has not called on the the ad to be taken down. Councilwoman Hahn has called on Tea Party extremist Craig Huey to come out publicly, not only to denounce the ad, but to call for it to be taken down immediately,” he said.

I don’t think the Democrats REALLY want the ad to disappear but then again I haven’t heard them defending Janice Hahn’s record with funding the anti-gang programs either.

CA-36: Craig Huey Denounces Racist and Sexist Ad Against Janice Hahn

LA City Councilwoman Janice Hahn hearts gangsters. Learn more here.

I have known Craig Huey for over 45 years and this ad is definitely not him.

California GOP congressional candidate Craig Huey is denouncing what he calls a “racist and sexist” third party web ad that depicts Janice Hahn as a stripper who is soft on gang members.

In a statement provided to POLITICO, Huey said,  “Along with many other residents of the South Bay I am outraged over this racist and sexist ad. I unequivocally denounce it. It’s unfortunate that the video will receive so much attention, when voters are hoping to discuss our economy.”

“The ad was not authorized and not affiliated with my campaign. Whether people agree with my politics or not, anyone who knows me can attest to the fact that I would not participate in something of this nature. The ad is blatantly racist and sexist and neither racism nor sexism has any place in the public sphere,” he continued.

Democratic groups have been calling on Huey to repudiate the inflammatory spot which has gone viral, attacking more than 93,000 YouTube hits as of this writing Wednesday afternoon.

And, I agree with Craig that the campaign should resume on the issues that most affect the California 36th Congressional District – jobs and taxes – not social issues like abortion.

“Janice Hahn has spent this campaign attempting to discuss only social issues. I have spent this campaign focusing on the issues that matter to our district: jobs, taxes and the national debt,” Huey said.

“I hope that Janice Hahn and national allies will stop dragging this campaign into the dirt. They know the ad is not from me. In fact Hahn is the only person who has approved of typical negative attack ads. Our district deserves better, and that what I stand for,” he continued.

CA-36: California Democrats Nervous of a Craig Huey Victory Over Janice Hahn

Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn greets former Rep. Jane Harman

They probably should be very worried since Craig Huey was only behind by five points in Democrat tracking polls.

Southern California Democrats are growing increasingly anxious about a special House election in a solidly blue district.

They are stepping up attacks on the wealthy tea party opponent, but Democrats’ bigger enemy in holding onto former Rep. Jane Harman’s 36th Congressional District might just be themselves.

While no one believes the race will become a reverse N.Y. 26 situation — in which Democrats notched a surprise win in a special House race where the Republican was strongly favored — they are nervous that midsummer voter apathy coupled with a disenchanted base is leaving an opening for Republican Craig Huey.

Virtually everyone expects Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn to ultimately win the July 12 election in the reliably liberal sun-soaked beach district, yet Democrats are pointing to some worrisome signs as the campaign hurtles into its final month.

Some are concerned about election fatigue; some sense the Democratic base is unmotivated. Others are just plain nervous the contest is closer than it should be.

“Am I worried about Democrats not coming out to vote on July 12? You bet,” said Eric Bauman, Los Angeles County Democratic Party chairman. “Republicans vote, and this guy is spending a lot of money.”

Craig Huey will spend what it takes and while this race is an uphill battle, I would not be surprised if Huey can eek out a victory. Remember the economy is very poor in this area of Los Angeles and Republican voters WILL turn out in July.

And, if not this election, then in 2012, when the district becomes more Republican in registration.

    Stay tuned….

Updated: CA-36: Janice Hahn Hearts Gangsters In New Video – Give Us Your Cash, B—ch! – Craig Huey Campaign Denounces Video

    *****Updated*****

This video has created quite a flap and the Craig Huey Campaign for Congress has denounced the video.

Huey’s campaign manager, Jimmy Camp, quickly denounced the video, calling it “inappropriate” and “highly offensive” and noting that it has no connection to the campaign.

Thanks to Stacy McCain for this information regarding my friend Craig Huey’s opponent, Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn, in the California Congressional District 36 special election on July 12th.

Janice Hahn is the Democrat running for Congress in the July 12 special election in California’s 36th District, to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Jane Harman.

As a member of the Los Angeles City Council, Hahn promoted a program to use taxpayer money to hire convicted criminals as gang intervention specialists. Predictably, Hahns government employment program for gangsters amounted to a taxpayer subsidy for violent crime.

    From the Film Ladd Filmaker:

I give you, therefore, my latest viral. It’s a rap-video attack ad, launched at Janice Hahn’s prior behavior as an L.A. City Council member. She is now running for Congress in California’s 36th District. She ran a city program that coddled gang members, paid them with taxpayer money, got them out of jail to rape and kill again. She even got policemen fired for daring to arrest her boyz. It was so bad the Mayor of L.A. took the program away from her. He’s a Democrat. She’s a Democrat. That’s bad when your own party takes your goofy program out of your clutches.

We don’t need any more gangsters in Washington, D.C.

What she did was completely outrageous.

Janice Hahn releases a television ad featuring Sarah Palin and Craig Huey, now Craig Huey her Republican opponent should remind voters of Hahn’s outrageous gang intervention program, paid for by taxpayer dollars.

CA-36: Worried Democrats Call Out The Big Dog for Janice Hahn

Former President Bill Clinton and Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn

I guess the race for Jane Harman’s Congressional seat in the South Bay is closer than one would expect.

Now, the Democratic Party is bringing out the “Big Dog” himself, former President Bill Clinton, to help defeat Republican Craig Huey.

Bill Clinton endorsed Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn on Monday, the latest big-name Democrat to formally support her House bid.

Hahn faces businessman Craig Huey (R) in the special-election runoff for former Rep. Jane Harman’s (D-Calif.) seat. Democrats have moved to circle the wagons around Hahn after Huey finished a surprise second in the May 17 jungle primary. In endorsing Hahn’s bid, Clinton joins a list that includes House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and former Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean, among others.

“America is at a crossroads, and we need to decide whether we are going to pursue a path of right-wing extremism or one of compromise and common-sense solutions,” the former president said in a statement. “Janice has proven herself to be a champion for creating jobs, cleaning our environment, protecting a woman’s right to choose, and expanding access to healthcare. We need people like Janice Hahn in Congress, and I’m proud to endorse her.”

Note that this endorsement is aimed at moderate Democrats who might not be too happy about the California economy and who may stay home on special election day, July 12th. Clinton will also be writing a fundraising letter for Hahn but will not travel to campaign in the district prior to the election.

If this election tightens, don’t be surprised to see Vice President Biden or Michelle Obama make a campaign appearance. The Democrats do not want to take this seat for granted, particularly since the district will change in 2012 due to redistricting.

CA-36 Poll Watch: Craig Huey in TIGHT Race Against Janice Hahn

LA City Councilwoman Janice Hahn (D) and Businessman Craig Huey (R) who will face off on July 12, 2011 in CA-36, Jane Harman’s Congressional District

This is what Politico is reporting this morning.

Internal Democratic polling shows Democrat Janice Hahn up by only a handful of points — roughly five — in the special-election race to succeed Jane Harman, Democratic sources tell Huddle. Hahn Campaign Manager Dave Jacobsen, who declined to confirm the numbers, told Huddle that voters in the 36th District are just starting to learn about Republican Craig Huey. To wit, Hahn’s campaign is going up with its first cable television buy of the general election today, noting that Huey has called Planned Parenthood a “murder mill” in the past. D.C. Democrats know they can’t take anything for granted and they’re in close contact with the Hahn campaign. After the bump they got from Kathy Hochul’s special election victory in New York, they don’t want to give up that momentum — and certainly not in Pelosi’s home state.

Five points is probably within the margin of error, so Craig Huey the underdog Republican has a shot. This is why Hahn has already started the negative ads on cable television.

California Democrats are worried – and they should be.
