LA Times Headline: “Protesters Out in Force Nationwide to Oppose Wisconsin’s Anti-Union Bill” – I Don’t Think So
This is what the LA Times Headline screams: “Protesters out in force nationwide to oppose Wisconsin’s anti-union bill.”
Promoters, such as David Dayen at Firedoglake, were predicting a million-person turnout nationwide. But reports as of 7:00 E.S.T. today make clear that other than in Madison, Wisconsin, the crowds were sparse.
The turnout in Madison was sizable, with estimates ranging over
from50-70,000, which included protesters bused in from other states. (Dayen is trying to pump the crowd estimate to over 100,000.) But elsewhere, the crowds numbered only in the hundreds or low thousands. In Washington, D.C., only about 500 people showed up (go to link for good photos of crazy signs). (Note, WaPo says 1000.)
In Columbus, OH, where you would expect a big crowd given a similar controversy, only “several thousand” people protested.
Other head counts, based on news reports, include: Boston (1000), Portsmouth, N.H. (few hundred), Augusta, ME (small crowd), New York City (“several thousand“), Chicago (1000), Miami (100), Austin (several hundred), Chicago (1000); Lansing, MI (2000), Nashville (hundreds), Los Angeles (2000), Richmond, VA (300), Denver (1000); Frankfurt, KY (several hundred), Jefferson City, MO (several hundred), Harrisburg, PA (several hundred).
While I don’t have a complete count, based on these numbers from some major cities and labor states, total protesters nationwide (excluding Madison) likely totaled under 100,000 combined.
Outside of Madison, there were no reports of sizable crowds. And if you read the news reports, almost all the protesters were other union members. Despite the efforts, the organizers failed to motivate significant numbers of non-union members to come out for protests. The 50-state protest was a failure, plain and simple, although the images from Madison may create the false impression of massive nationwide protests.
The subhead at the LA Times reads more accurately: “Up to 100,000 rally in Madison while hundreds show up in dozens of other cities to combat the Republican-backed measure that would limit collective bargaining rights for most public workers in Wisconsin.” But, the subheadline contradicts the headline because the protesters were not out in force NATIONWIDE.
This is NOT true.
But, there is MORE:
Nearly two weeks into a political standoff, tens of thousands rallied in Madison and in dozens of cities around the nation to oppose a bill that would severely limit collective bargaining rights for most Wisconsin public employees.
Joel DeSpain, spokesman for the Madison Police Department, said the rally — in steadily falling snow — drew between 70,000 and 100,000 and may have been the largest protest in Madison since the Vietnam War
Again, NOT true and implying that the protest crowds outside of Madison, Wisconsin were on the massive scale.
Later on in the piece they admit the protest crowd in Los Angeles was not so much:
Elsewhere, hundreds of boisterous pro-union demonstrators gathered on the steps of Los Angeles City Hall, loudly voicing their support for the Wisconsin workers while speaking of concerns that the perennially forceful labor movement in California could one day face a similar crisis.
“If it can happen in Wisconsin, it can happen anywhere,” said Pasquale Gazillo, a merchant marine, referring to Wisconsin’s long history as a union stronghold.
“States like that, they’re the ones that started the eight-hour workday and made sure workers got paid if they got sick. The Republicans are pushing, and if that state falls, the rest of the country is going to be in trouble,” he said.
Nice try at spin LA Times. Gotcha…..

Tribune Company – Parent of Los Angeles Times – BUSTO
The Tribune Company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy today. The company that owns the Los Angeles Times, KTLA Channel 5 and the Chicago Tribune filed for bankruptcy protection today, seeking relief from $12 billion in debt that largely stems from last year’s leveraged buyout of the media firm.
Tribune Co. directors approved the action to seek Chapter 11 protection in a meeting today, saying they want to restructure payments to banks and other creditors, following real estate magnate Sam Zell’s purchase of the company last year.
Reportedly Zell will sell the Chicago Cubs to reorganize the company.
Flap would think baseball is more viable business-wise than the Tribune newspapers – hell, sell them instead.
When does Tribune apply for their government bailout?

Day By Day by Chris Muir October 5, 2008 – Close Enough
Day By Day by Chris MuirGee Chris, Zed is now famous as a “CHEATING” Todd Palin. The MSM better not tell Sam, eh?
Interesting note in Starbucks today. No photo of the Sarah Palin event in Carson yesterday on the cover of the Sunday Los Angeles Times. But, there was a 5 by 7 inch photo of a waving, smiling Sarah Palin on the Spanish language newspaper, La Opinion
What do you know? The Spanish language press actually has some journalistic integrity – unlike the Los Angeles Times and the Tribune Company that owns it.

John Edwards Watch: The Cover-Up?
The latest from The National Enquirer on the John Edwards and his mistress-love child flapMickey Kaus says The National Enquirer has moved onto the “coverup” of the John Edwards, paid off mistress and love child story rather than publish the photographs of their reporters run-in with Edwards last week.In context, the photos would be powerful evidence. Enquirer editor David Perel apparently doesn’t want to win over the MSM by releasing them. He’d rather have the Edwards story all to himself.
An interview of the Los Angeles Times blogmeister Tony Pierce offers the MSM standard excuses of why they buried the story and continue to do so today. Or is it ignoring?
Of course, if Edwards had been a GOP Senator or Presidential candidate, all of the Los Angeles Times bloggers would have been directed to cover the story.
This story will remain moribund until The National Enquirer decides to release at least one of the photographs of the fleeing and/or cowering Edwards or breaks more of which they have promised.

Why is the Media in the Tank for John Edwards?
Mickey Kaus answers the question besides the obvious answer of bias and illustrates the “double standard” especially at the Los Angeles Times which has instructed its bloggers to not write about the story. In the meantime, John Edwards has NO comment and Fox News has interviewed the Beverly Hills security guard who intervened between John Edwards and the National Enquirer reporters.
Flap is waiting for the photos from the National Enquirer. You know they are going to drop soon.
Will John Edwards continue to “stonewall” the flap or will he check himself into rehab?

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Watch: Los Angeles Times’ SOB SISTER for the Rising Media Star – Mirthala Salinas
Graphic courtesy of ERS News
The Los Angeles Times piece we all expected has finally arrived. And it is the SOB SISTER for Mirthala Salinas.Telemundo executives are close to deciding the fate of Mirthala Salinas, who had a romantic relationship with L.A.’s mayor while reporting on him.
Mirthala Salinas was a rising star at one of Los Angeles’ premier Spanish-language television stations before she came to be known as the other woman in Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s life.
A respected and aggressive journalist, she anchored a newscast that won two local Emmy Awards at KVEA-TV Channel 52 during her 10 years at the Telemundo station. She earned a Golden Mike broadcasting award as well.
“She was very smart and always had her finger on the pulse of the community,” said one former Telemundo executive, who recalled the 35-year-old newscaster as poised and articulate.
Now, Salinas’ career hangs in the balance as Telemundo executives decide as early as Monday whether to fire her for having a romantic relationship with Villaraigosa while she was covering him as a political reporter.
Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah…….
The Los Angeles Times first apologizes for Mayor Villaraigosa’s immoral and unethical conduct and now is spinning the POWER FUC**R as the poor rising media star as the unfortunate victim.
Instead of directing an inquiry into the Mayor’s relationship with Salinas in the press room and with special interests, they profile Salinas and make a case of her continued employment at NBC/Telemundo:
“She is a community figure; people relate to her and respect her,” said Rochelle Newman-Carrasco, chief executive of Enlace, an L.A. communications marketing firm that specializes in Latino media. “Spanish-language news anchors are not just readers of the news. They are the voice of the community; they are advocates for the community and role models.”
GAG – BARF ALERT
And whether Mirthala’s relationship with the Mayor gave him favorable press treatment and NBC/Telemundo access to stories they otherwise would not have, the Los Angeles Times has this:
In an interview this week, Villaraigosa said he never gave Salinas or Channel 52 an advantage, adding that he regularly appears on many of Los Angeles’ television newscasts and provides almost unfettered access to reporters seeking one-on-one interviews.
“I play more favorites with … the L.A. Times than I have with anybody on this beat,” he said. “Honest-to-God truth.”
MORE GAGGING
During the course of a television interview on June 19, 2006, Villaraigosa walks with Salinas outside the state Capitol.
When the Los Angeles Times wants to protect someone, they go all the way.
But, why is the largest newspaper in Los Angeles protecting Mirthala Salinas and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, excusing their unethical conduct and failing to investigate the affair?
Isn’t it obvious?
Readers, you tell Flap…….
By the way, Mirthala is in NO danger of being fired.

Los Angeles Times Watch: Times Loses 4.2 % in Daily Circulation
The Los Angeles Times continues to lose circulation:
The comparisons are based on the six-month period ending March 2007 and the six-month period ending March 2006.
4.2 % loss in daily circulation to 815,723
4.7% loss in Sunday circulation to 1,173,096
Other notable newspapers:
The three large national papers made some strides in increases. However, The New York Times, which usually experiences small gains, lost daily circulation, down 1.9% to 1,120,420 while Sunday fell 3.3% to 1,627,062. USA Today reported that daily circulation was up 0.2% to 2,278,022. As reported earlier, The Wall Street Journal also increased, up 0.6% to 2,062,312.
The Washington Post lost 3.4% of its weekday circ to 699,130 copies. Sunday fell 3.2% to 929,921.
Daily circulation at The Orange County (Calif.) Register slipped 5% to 284,613 while Sunday was down 7% to 329,549.
Flap is happy to report that blog readership has increased.
But, it is a rare event indeed that I see anyone reading a newsprint newspaper in public and most of my colleagues, friends and acquaintances do not subscribe.

Los Angeles Times Watch: Times is Expected to Cut 5% of Staff
A view of the ” Los Angeles Times ” newspaper building in downtown Los Angeles
Los Angeles Times: Times is expected to cut 5% of staff
The Los Angeles Times is expected to announce Monday a plan to cut about 5% of its workforce, or approximately 150 jobs, as profits at the newspaper and its Chicago-based parent company continue to slide.
Times executives said they expected most of the cuts, including nearly 70 newsroom positions, to come through voluntary buyouts. After the reductions, the newspaper would have about 2,625 employees. The news staff would shrink to about 850 people from 920.
Not a Malaise…….
The Los Angels Times doesn’t get IT, now do they?
