Houston Chronicle: Climate scientists feeling the heat

As public debate deals in absolutes, some experts fear predictions ‘have created a monster’

Scientists long have issued the warnings: The modern world’s appetite for cars, air conditioning and cheap, fossil-fuel energy spews billions of tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, unnaturally warming the world.

Yet, it took the dramatic images of a hurricane overtaking New Orleans and searing heat last summer to finally trigger widespread public concern on the issue of global warming.

Climate scientists might be expected to bask in the spotlight after their decades of toil. The general public now cares about greenhouse gases, and with a new Democratic-led Congress, federal action on climate change may be at hand.

Problem is, global warming may not have caused Hurricane Katrina, and last summer’s heat waves were equaled and, in many cases, surpassed by heat in the 1930s.

In their efforts to capture the public’s attention, then, have climate scientists oversold global warming? It’s probably not a majority view, but a few climate scientists are beginning to question whether some dire predictions push the science too far.

“Some of us are wondering if we have created a monster,” says Kevin Vranes, a climate scientist at the University of Colorado.

But, Al Gore was already a MONSTER…….

Al Gore Watch: Leaves Door Ajar for Possible 2008 Run for the Presidency

    GORE 2008

Al Gore waves during the premiere of the documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” in Hong Kong in this Sept. 12, 2006, file photo. The former vice president has criss-crossed the globe and the nation to promote the DVD version of his film, and in recent weeks has made high-profile appearances on the Jay Leno, Oprah and The Today Show, while still insisting he’s not planning a return to politics.

Washington Post: Gore Leaves Door Ajar for 2008

    Will he or won’t he?

As the Democratic field for 2008 takes shape, one big remaining question is whether former vice president Al Gore — winner of the popular vote in 2000, an almost-candidate in 2004 and now the public face of the movement to address global warming — will be in it.

Flap bets he is IN and hence this piece in the Washington Post. Hillary has NOT apparently cleared the field.

Over the past six years, Gore has become a heroic figure for the party’s liberal left, thanks in large part to his early and steady opposition to the war in Iraq. And it’s not just liberals who have taken to Gore. “An Inconvenient Truth,” the film detailing Gore’s lonely quest to raise awareness of climate change, is one of the most successful documentaries of all time and, as important, has transformed Gore’s public image from cold to cool.

That renewed popularity has stoked speculation that Gore just may have another national race up his sleeve. “He’s the Rocky Balboa of 2008,” said Chris Lehane, a former Gore adviser.

The LEFT and NUTROOTS love Gore because of his early and consistent anti-Iraq War rhetoric. With Barack Obama taking the African-American vote in the early primaries what natural constituency is left for Hillary – NADA.

Gore WILL be a formidable candidate.

Patrick Ruffini likes him too. As does Power Line.

All Al needs is the WILL…….

Power Line: An opening for Gore

There are three serious Democrats who are running, or seem likely to run, for president: Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and John Edwards. But collectively they fail to occupy all of the available space and, indeed, leave a rather clear gap. What’s lacking is an avowed leftist candidate with gravitas. Hillary is not running as a leftist and is not perceived as such by her party. Obama, though now running as a euphemist, is clearly a man of the left. However, his gravitas quotient is roughly zero. Then there’s Edwards — to the left of Hillary at this time and with more gravitas than Obama, but not terribly convincing in either regard.

Gore would be a SERIOUS contender and would outflank Hillary on the LEFT. Nutroot, Green and Labor support would abound.

Flap says Gore would BEAT Hillary.

But, does he have the WILL TO RUN?

    Stay tuned…….

Rudy Giuliani Watch: Giuliani Continues to Lead Clinton, Gore

Rasmussen: Giuliani Continues to Lead Clinton, Gore

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) continues to hold a narrow lead over Senator Hillary Clinton (D) and former Vice President Al Gore (D) in early Election 2008 polling.

Giuliani leads Clinton 47% to 43% in the latest poll. That’s very similar to the 48% to 43% lead he enjoyed in late November. When matched against Gore, Giuliani now leads 46% to 43%. In November, he also enjoyed a three-point lead over the Democrats’ Election 2000 candidate.

Against either Democrat, Giuliani leads among men but trails among women. The two Democrats lead among voters under 30, but trail among other age groups.

Gore is now viewed favorably by 50% of Americans and unfavorably by 49%. That’s a bit better than in earlier surveys. For Clinton, the numbers are now 48% favorable and 50% unfavorable, a bit weaker than the last time we checked.

Neither Democrat comes close to Giuliani on the favorability scale. The man sometimes known as “America’s Mayor” is viewed favorably by seven out of ten Americans (71%).

Rudy leads in the Republican primary election polls as well.

So, onto New Hampshire for Mayor Giuliani:

New York Post: GIULIANI WILL HIT ROAD FOR NEW HAMPSHIRE

Rudy Giuliani will pay a visit to first-in-the-nation primary state New Hampshire at the end of next month, part of his initial foray as he mulls a run for the White House in 2008, officials told The Post.

The former mayor will address the New Hampshire Republican Party’s annual meeting in Manchester on Jan. 27. State party Executive Director Andy Leach said several hundred people attend the yearly event, making it a broad early platform within the party.

Full speed ahead for the Mayor’s campaign. After a successful fund-raising effort this week in New York, Giuliani is off to convert the cash into organization and votes.

President 2008 Watch: John Edwards IN and Evan Bayh OUT

    edwardsdecember16aweb

Former U.S. Sen. John Edwards speaks to Marg Stephens during a book signing in Columbia, S.C., Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006. Though he hasn’t officially announced any White House intentions, the former North Carolina senator is campaigning all the same.

AP: Officials: Edwards to Enter 2008 Race

Former Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards intends to enter the 2008 race for the White House, two Democratic officials said Saturday.

Edwards, who represented North Carolina in the Senate for six years, plans to make the campaign announcement late this month from the New Orleans neighborhood hit hardest by Hurricane Katrina last year and slow to recover from the storm.

Edwards also plans to travel from New Orleans through the four early presidential nominating states _ Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire and South Carolina _ as part of an announcement tour between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Among Democrats, Sens. Hillary Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois are drawing the most attention almost two years before the actual vote.

Edwards, however, is in a strong position as the leading candidate in Iowa. He was a top fundraiser in the race for the nomination in 2004 before he became Democratic Sen. John Kerry’s running mate.

Could John Edwards with Barack Obama’s help become the “ANYONE BUT HILLARY” candidate?

Very possible – now that John Kerry has self-destructed and Al Gore continues to rule out a run.

Al Gore could take Hillary and end the race early. But, does he have the will to run?

    Doubtful

And apparently Evan Bayh does not wish to run for Vice President.

Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana announced on Saturday he will not seek the presidency in 2008, saying he believes the odds of a successful run were too great to overcome.

“At the end of the day, I concluded that due to circumstances beyond our control the odds were longer than I felt I could responsibly pursue,” Bayh said in a statement. “This path – and these long odds – would have required me to be essentially absent from the Senate for the next year instead of working to help the people of my state and the nation.”

Bayh from a RED STATE – Indiana had little chance in this race. It is doubtful that with either Hillary, Obama, Gore or Edwards as the presidential nominee that he is the right fit for even ticket balancing.

Stay tuned as Edwards makes the push in Iowa and Obama splits away Hilary’s constituency.

ABC News: Gore to Bush on Iraq: It’s Not About You

ABC News’ Teddy Davis Reports: Calling the Iraq war “the worst strategic mistake in the entire history of the United States” and “worse than a civil war,” former Vice President Gore urged President Bush to find a way to get U.S. troops out of Iraq “as quickly as possible without making the situation worse” while appearing this morning on NBC’s “Today.”

“I would urge the President to try to separate out the personal issues of being blamed in history for his mistake and instead recognizing that it is not about him. It’s about our country,” Gore said in an interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer.

When asked if he would pull U.S. troops out of Iraq even it was seen as a defeat for the U.S., Gore dodged the question, saying if he were president, he would have “the full flow of information” and he would be able to test these ideas.

On the question of whether he would run for president in 2008, Gore once again said he is involved in a different kind of campaign – to educate people about climate change – and that he isn’t planning to do so but he hasn’t completely ruled it out.

    Oh Please……

Al, if you want to play the game you have to step into the ARENA.
