Update:Indictment Sought Against Rep. Jefferson
Sources tell CBS News that authorities are seeking an indictment against Congressman William Jefferson, D-La., on more than a dozen counts involving public corruption.
Jefferson has been the subject of a ongoing probe in which FBI agents allegedly found more than $90,000 in cash in his freezer.
CBS News correspondent Bob Orr reports that the Justice Department is expected to unveil the charges later today.
This was the latest development in the 16-month international investigation of Jefferson, who allegedly accepted $100,000 from a telecommunications businessman, $90,000 of which was later recovered from a freezer in the congressman’s Louisiana home.
Last year prosecutors and the FBI seized nearly 19,000 pages of documents and electronic files from his office.
Update #2:Jury Indicts Jefferson in Bribery Probe
Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., was indicted Monday on federal charges of racketeering, soliciting bribes and money-laundering in a long- running bribery investigation into business deals he tried to broker in Africa.
The indictment handed up in federal court in Alexandria., Va., Monday is 94 pages long and lists 16 alleged violations of federal law that could keep Jefferson in prison for up to 235 years, according to a Justice Department official who has seen the document.
Among the charges listed in the indictment, said the official, are racketeering, soliciting bribes, wire fraud, money-laundering, obstruction of justice, conspiracy and violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case.
Wonder if Speaker Pelosi will ask him to step down from ALL committee assignments pending trial?
Stay tuned……

Representative William Jefferson Watch: GOP Objects to Jefferson Homeland Security Seat
Josephine Butler, left, Rep. William Jefferson, D-New Orleans, Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Los Angles, Rep. Al Green, D-Houston, and Gwendolyn Guice, right, all shake hands in front of the new homes built for Butler and Guice in New Orleans, Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007. The two residents got the keys to what are believed to be the first homes built in the Lower Ninth Ward since Hurricane Katrina hit 18 months ago.
CNN: House GOP to object to Jefferson’s Homeland Security seat
House Republican Whip Roy Blunt, R-Missouri, announced Wednesday that Republicans will object on the House floor to Rep. William Jefferson, D-Louisiana, getting a seat on the House Homeland Security Committee.
Jefferson is entangled in a federal bribery investigation related to his dealings with a telecommunications company. Federal investigators found $90,000 in cash in his freezer in 2005 after Jefferson allegedly accepted a $100,000 bribe from an FBI informant. Despite the investigation, Jefferson was re-elected to a ninth term to his New Orleans’ seat in a run-off election in December.
So much for the “CULTURE OF CORRUPTION” that the Democrats painted the GOP with last November.
When Jefferson is indicted, will the voters even notice?
You betcha…….
The cold hard cash in the freezer is a “CLASSIC.”

Representative William Jefferson Watch: Jefferson on House Homeland Security Committee
Mocking the bribery scandal of United States congressman William Jefferson, participants hand out play money during the Krewe du Vieux parade in New Orleans, Louisiana February 3, 2007. The parade marked the beginning of the city’s second Mardi Gras season since Hurricane Katrina.
Washington Post: Rep. Jefferson Gets Seat on Homeland Security
Rep. William Jefferson, the Louisiana Democrat who’s facing an ongoing federal corruption probe, is being granted a spot on the Homeland Security Committee, according to Democratic aides.
The appointment will be announced Friday, according to one aide who requested anonymity because the decision isn’t yet official.
Jefferson was removed from his seat on the Ways and Means Committee, one of the most important panels in Congress, by Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) last summer in an attempt to show how seriously Democrats viewed the allegations of corruption.
But the move by Pelosi, who was still minority leader at the time, infuriated members of the Congressional Black Caucus, who said Jefferson shouldn’t be punished unless he is indicted; federal prosecutors have yet to bring an indictment, despite an FBI raid 18 months ago on his home that yielded $90,000 in cash in his freezer.
Homeland Security Committee, eh?
So much for the Democrats charge against the GOP for breeding a “CULTURE OF CORRUPTION.”
The voters in Loiuisiana should have thrown his ass out of Congress in the last election. But, until Jefferson is indicted, the new Democrat Majority in the House should at least suspend him from any sensitive national security committee assignments.
But, you know, the Democrat leaders don’t want to piss off their meal ticket – the Black Caucus.

And for what are the feds waiting? They have Jefferson on tape.
More money wrapped in another freezer?

Representative William Jefferson Watch: Democrats Keep Jefferson Off Ways and Means Committee
United States congressman William Jefferson (D-New Orleans) speaks during an election night victory party after defeating Karen Carter in a runoff in New Orleans, Louisiana December 9, 2006.
AP: Dems keep Jefferson off Ways and Means
House Democrats, insistent that they will hold lawmakers to higher standards, decided Tuesday that Rep. William Jefferson (news, bio, voting record) will not return to an influential committee until a federal corruption investigation involving him is completed.
Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi said the Democratic Steering Committee had resolved that Jefferson, who last Saturday won a runoff election in his New Orleans district, will not be given back his spot on the Ways and Means Committee, the panel that determines tax and trade policies.
But, will Pelosi allow him to be seated on the House Budget Committee? Or the House Bribes Committee?
Jefferson, an eight-term incumbent, handily defeated his Democratic opponent in a runoff election despite the controversy over the federal investigation. He was accused of taking bribes from a company seeking contracts in the Nigerian telecommunications market.
After his victory speech Saturday night, Jefferson said: “I don’t try to second-guess Ms. Pelosi. I don’t go there to work for anyone, I go there to work with the people down here.”
Right!
It is a mockery of Congress that this MORON be seated.
Flap awaits a speedy indictment.

Representative William Jefferson Watch: Jefferson Wins 9th Term in Congress
Congressman William Jefferson D-New Orleans, left with his wife Andrea Jefferson shakes hands at his victory party in New Orleans Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006. Jefferson defeated democratic State Representative Karen Carter for re-election.
UPI: Rep. William Jefferson wins 9th term
Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., who gained notoriety after the FBI found $90,000 in his freezer, was elected Saturday to a ninth term in Congress.
Jefferson defeated Democratic state Rep. Karen Carter in a runoff — even though Carter had secured all the major endorsements and had a better funded campaign, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported.
Jefferson secured a majority of the votes in black neighborhoods in New Orleans and also won in Jefferson Parish, where Sheriff Harry Lee campaigned against him.
What a JOKE!
Flap can hardly wait for the indictment and trial.
Karen Carter should keep her campaign posters handy. She will be running again soon.
Louisiana has a non-partisan system in which the two top candidates in the general election face each other in a runoff if no one wins more than 50 percent of the vote.
Jefferson won 30 percent of the vote in the first election, more than any of the dozen or so candidates seeking to unseat him. Most political observers speculated that the anti-Jefferson forces would unite behind Carter, giving her an easy win.
The congressman remains the target of a federal investigation for allegedly taking payoffs. Alleged co-conspirators have pleaded guilty, and Jefferson has said he expects to be indicted.
Stay tuned…….
