Poll Watch: Senator Barbara Boxer Continues Unpopular

California U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer answering a question during election 2010

The latest PPP Poll is quite revealing.

There’s no such post election bounce for Barbara Boxer. She continues to have more voters (47%) disapproving of her than approve (45%). That was the case throughout her entire 2010 campaign and she got reelected by double digits anyway. You can take that as a sign that the entire GOP is hopeless in California or simply that the party needs to start nominating much stronger candidates but at any rate what they’re doing now is not good enough to even hold an unpopular Senator to a single digit win.

Obviously, the California GOP needs to rebrand itself and recruit new and younger candidates for the future. It may take quite a while though – if ever.

GOP Brand Dead in Deep-Blue California?

Yeah, probably so – at least for now in state-wide offices.

The Republican Party, as a brand, is dead in California.

That’s the eye-opening consensus of a crowd of political observers, lawmakers and strategists – Democrats and Republicans – gathered at a UC Berkeley symposium this weekend to mull over California’s defiantly blue status in the wake of a conservative tide that swept the nation in November.

Many of the 200 attendees at the two-day Institute of Governmental Studies conference appeared surprisingly unified on one issue: that, barring dramatic upheaval, the GOP’s prospects may be doomed in the voter-rich Golden State.

“Republicans, as a brand, are dead,” Duf Sundheim, the former state GOP chair, told the gathering Saturday.

Exhibit A: Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley, who had racked up a string of election victories in nonpartisan offices. But Cooley lost the 2010 state attorney general’s race to San Francisco Democrat Kamala Harris. Why? “He had an ‘R’ after his name,” Sundheim said.

“There’s a brand problem,” agreed Republican Jim Brulte, former state Senate minority leader.

Here is what I wrote after the November election.

California with its ethnic and geographic segmentation has been a super Democratic state. But, on the other hand, it appears to be the only state so predisposed, along with New York. The Democratic Party has become a regional, ethnic, and two state party.

So, what will be the policy implications of these findings?

    • I don’t think the national Republican Party will put too much money into California for statewide races any longer – at least for the foreseeable future.
    • There will be a hardening of national GOP positions on illegal immigration, border security, and illegal alien amnesty.
    • California will not be the recipient of much Congressionally generated pork or bailout monies.
    • The California Republican Party will hunker down into a permanent minority roll and concentrate on winning Congressional and Legislative seats in “RED” districts while waiting for opportunities.
    • California already known as business-unfriendly will be a jobs donor to other states who recruit California businesses.

California is in a deep blue hole and it may take decades to change – if ever.

But, the Democrats will have to govern and there will be no excuses – sink or swim. After redistricting and a few election cycles if California does not thrive, the California GOP will re-emerge like a phoenix from the ashes.

California Poll Watch: One in Five California Voters Would NEVER Cast a Ballot for a Republican

gopelephantupsidedown Memo to the California Republican Party: Time to Change?

    No surprise here.

Almost one in five California voters said they would never cast a ballot for a Republican. Among Latinos, that rose to almost one in three, according to a new Los Angeles Times-USC poll.

Only 5% of California voters were as emphatically anti-Democrat, according to the survey.

“I don’t know how any Republican thinks they can win in California after looking at this,” said GOP pollster Linda DiVall, who with Democratic pollster Stanley Greenberg directed the survey for The Times and the USC College of Letters, Arts & Sciences.

California voters surveyed in the poll repudiated the GOP stance on illegal immigration by endorsing a host of positions intended to make it easier for the undocumented to gain legal status. Their support for same-sex marriage outnumbered that opposing any legal recognition by more than 3 to 1. Californians also endorsed an assertive role for government in protecting minority citizens, regulating corporations and helping the poor and needy, and rejected arguments that an activist role for government had harmed the fiber of American society.

    The complete poll is here.

California with its ethnic and geographic segmentation has been a super Democratic state. But, on the other hand, it appears to be the only state so predisposed, along with New York. The Democratic Party has become a regional, ethnic, and two state party.

Memo to the California Republican Party: Time to Change?

Well, the California Republican Party (CRP) unlike the rest of the country did not perform well in this year’s elections. In fact, it appears the CA GOP lost every statewide race from Governor to Insurance Commissioner.

The California Democratic Party will continue to control the California Legislature as they have for decades (except for a few years) since World War II.

So, what should California Republicans do?

There have been suggestions from Democrat, left-leaning mainstream media types to change it up and betray, I mean modify, party principles.

    Why?

The GOP’s principles of smaller government, lower taxes, individual liberty and freedom, strong defense and less government are winners nationally and successful. The national GOP won back a majority in the House and made significant inroads into the super majority of a Democrat controlled U.S. Senate. Since World War II, the Republican Party has held the White House more than the Democrats.

Election 2010 was an overwhelming success for the Republican Party  – except in California.

    Again, why?

    The short answer is demographics.

I don’t have to beat the drum about ethnic voting blocks in California. It is painfully evident in the election results and will continue to be in statewide California elections.

California Republicans will have to be patient and wait until the Democrat super majorities run California into a ditch (which they will) and then pick up the pieces incrementally (independent commission redistricting next year will help), nurture their officeholders in California red areas, and recruit new candidates from the professions, business and industry who wish to serve. In the short term, they may also have to concede California as a deep blue Democratic state and fundraise/support Republican candidates from outside the state. After all, the Democratic Party nationally has become a two state regional party anyway.

But, sacrificing or selling out one’s principles by becoming Republican Lite or moderate Democrats is a non-starter.

Then, there really will be NO alternative to California Democrats who trend LEFT.

The California Republican Party will make a come back and win more elections because the principles are RIGHT. The CRP should stay the course.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger Considered Leaving the Republican Party

    arnold and crist feb 23

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, right, huddles with Florida Gov. Charlie Crist as President Barack Obama addressed the National Governors Association regarding the economic stimulus package, Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, in the State Dining Room of the White House in Washington

The Governator may as well have pulled the switch because after the latest California State Budget with it’s massive ($14 Billion) tax hikes, his credibility with California Republicans is ZERO.

A few months ago, Arnold Schwarzenegger and a few close associates discussed whether he should leave the Republican Party, according to two people familiar with the conversation. His friend Mike Bloomberg, the New York mayor, had become an independent. Maybe Schwarzenegger should, too. But the governor and his people quickly concluded that Californians already saw him as independent of the Republican Party. So what would be the point of a switch? (A spokesman for the governor declined comment.)

To people outside the state, Schwarzenegger’s recent battles with Republican legislators over a budget and his criticism of GOP governors and Congressmen for their opposition to President Obama’s stimulus package might sound jarring. Schwarzenegger once was “Conan the Republican” (the first President Bush’s nickname for him), a politician who declared in his 2004 convention speech, “I’m proud to belong to the party of Abraham Lincoln, the party of Teddy Roosevelt, the party of Ronald Reagan and the party of George W. Bush.” Now he is on ABC News saying that “it doesn’t really mater if you’re a Republican or a Democrat.”

Arnold has the ego of a movie star celeb and  has a crying need to be popular. Popularity has served him well in bodybuilding and movies. In politics – not so much

Making difficult decisions as California Governor has placed Arnold in a situation he abhors – making some voters dislike him. Thus, he doesn’t make any decisions unless pressed and then the Republican Party be damned. IT is all about Arnold.

Flap hopes the California GOP has learned a lesson. You can take a popular figure from Hollywood and make him governor. But, if he does not have the requisite skill set to actually govern, then you have a problem.

Shocker: California GOP Is In Trouble

    RepublicanElephantbigweb2

    You think?

With their registrations sinking and their political clout withering, California Republicans have come out of the November election in danger of slipping into political irrelevance across much of the state.

“There’s been a broad repudiation of traditional conservative Republicans in California,” said Tony Quinn, a former GOP analyst and co-editor of the California Target Book, which focuses on political contests in the state. “There are almost no areas in the state that can be considered safely Republican anymore.”

But, Quinn does NOT mention Proposition 11 that barely passed and the changes the heavily Democrat gerrymandered districts. But, Flap digresses.

The GOP brand has been hurt by President Bush and the corrupt GOP establishment in Congress, no doubt.

But, there are opportunities and although down and out now, the upside is good for the GOP – but maybe not majority but relevant.

    Here are the stats:

    October 2004

    • Total registered voters: 16.5 million
    • Registered Democrats: 7.1 million (43 percent)
    • Registered Republicans: 5.7 million (34.7 percent)
    • Registration gap: Democrats ahead by 1.4 million

    October 2008

    • Total registered voters: 17.3 million
    • Registered Democrats: 7.7 million (44 percent)
    • Registered Republicans: 5.4 million (31.3 percent)
    • Registration gap: Democrats ahead by 2.3 million

Counties that changed to majority Democrats since 2004

    • Alpine
    • San Bernardino
    • San Joaquin
    • Stanislaus
    • Ventura

Counties nearing majority Democrats since 2004

    • Del Norte (8 voters)
    • San Diego (380 voters)
    • Trinity (40 voters)

    Source: California secretary of state

The rebuilding will begin by the end of the decade with new legislative districts and term limits throwing out the incumbent Democrats.

Flap doubts California voters will change the 2/3’rds vote requirement for passing the state budget or to raise taxes. But, do the Democrats really want to push the issue?

Voters now blame Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for the economic mess which he was first elected to fix when he was elected six years ago. If the Democrats in the legislature want accountablility Flap is positive the GOP will be glad to oblige.

Watch for new registration initiatives as well for the California GOP beginning by next summer.

    Stay tuned…..

California GOP Legislators to Vote To Triple Motor Vehicle Tax?

This supposed “DEAL” is NOT going to happen.

Reporting from Sacramento — State lawmakers began moving toward a deal this week to close California’s deficit with the help of steeper car fees that would cost many drivers hundreds of dollars annually, according to people involved in budget talks.

Under the plan, GOP lawmakers — most of whom have signed anti-tax pledges — would vote to triple the vehicle license fee that owners pay when they register their cars every year in exchange for a ballot measure that would impose rigid limits on future state spending. Motorists’ annual license fees would rise from 0.65% of the value of their vehicles to 2%. For a car or truck valued at $25,000, the increase would be $336.

Flap has heard from a California Republican Legislator who blasts this deal as a “liberal/L.A. Times rumor.”

Tax Generator Arnold Schwarzenegger Calls for Special Session of California Legislature To Bailout State Budget

    arnold nov 6 2008

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today called for a special legislative session to address California budget shortfalls

The California GOP will NEVER support/vote for this proposal.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called today for a temporary 1.5-cent increase in the state sales tax to help close an $11.2 billion deficit in the state budget, as well as new taxes on liquor and oil production.

Schwarzenegger also proposed one-day-a-month unpaid furloughs for state workers for the next 17 months, as well as rescinding two of the workers’ 13 paid holidays

In calling the Legislature into special session to deal with the deficit, Schwarzenegger said it was vital for legislators to act swiftly.

Flap has been harping on Schwarzenegger for years to cut the bloated California budget and time after time shortfalls come home to roost.

Other elements of the Governor’s plan:

    • Cutting spending on programs in the current budget by $4.5 billion, $2.5 billion of it from elementary and high schools.
    • Revamping the state’s cash-strapped unemployment insurance system by gradually increasing the rates charged to employers and lowering benefits while tightening eligibility requirements.
    • Relaxing some state labor regulations dealing with meal and rest periods, overtime exemptions and work schedules.
    • Speeding up public works projects, especially hospital construction, to inject life into the state economy. That would require modifying some environmental regulations.

The California GOP must resist all tax increases and force the Democrats to cut the budget and take responsibility for their profligate spending habits.

    Think it will happen?

Nahhhh some spineless GOP legislator will sell out the Republican Caucus and Flap will be paying more and more in taxes.

Won’t help the very poor California economy much.

    McCain Event June 24 2008 069

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will not be attending the Republican National Convention this week.

    The Press Release:

Sacramento, CA – Governor Schwarzenegger today made the following statement regarding his attendance at the Republican National Convention:

“I am honored that Senator McCain invited me to speak at the Republican National Convention. He is an American hero, a great leader, and the right candidate to be our next president.

“However, California is always my number one priority, and there is no greater priority for our state right now than putting a responsible budget in place that fixes our broken system. Therefore — as I have said — I will not be attending the National Convention in order to focus on working toward a state budget agreement. It is totally unacceptable that 62 days past its deadline, the Legislature has not sent me a budget that I can sign. Just as they must do in our nation’s capital, Republicans and Democrats must compromise and do the work of the people.”

Arnold could fly in and out of Minneapolis quickly without a problem in his private jet but the REAL REASON Arnold is not attending is that because of Hurricane Gustav he won’t be delivering a prime time speech anyway.

    So, why bother?

Arnold is such a good Republican.
