President 2012: Will Senator Jim DeMint Endorse Mitt Romney for President?

Well, Senator DeMint (R-South Carolina) did in 2008, but now there are conditions?

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) “would never consider” endorsing former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for president again in 2012 unless Romney repudiates the health reforms he sought as governor, a source close to DeMint said Thursday.

A source close to the conservative icon emphasized that, despite comments to The Hill indicating that Romney shouldn’t shoulder all the political blame for the Massachusetts healthcare plan, DeMint wouldn’t endorse Romney again unless he admits the plan was mistaken.

“It’s obvious Jim was just trying to be nice to the guy he backed over McCain, as many conservatives did in 2008,” the source said. “But he would never consider backing Romney again unless he admits that his Massachusetts healthcare plan was a colossal mistake.”

These quotes from an unnamed source came after the Washington Post’s Jennifer Rubin spanked DeMint in this piece this morning.

So has DeMint suddenly decided to make peace with the individual mandate? Perhaps, but that would be a monumental and abrupt shift in his thinking. No, this is pure, opportunistic politics. It’s the sort of thing DeMint normally decries, to the cheers of his base. But Romney backed DeMint and now DeMint is giving Romney cover.

That’s unsurprising in politics, but it’s a major problem for a pol who has carved his identity on principled opposition to nearly every compromise with the left. For DeMint to give Romney a pass on an individual mandate negotiated with the late Sen. Ted Kennedy is a high-risk proposition for DeMint.

His backers and the Republican base more generally are not going to buy the excuse DeMint has offered on RomneyCare. Romney is going to be savaged by the right, and from those very people who have given DeMint his base of support. So the question for DeMint is: Is he willing to risk his own conservative street cred to support a candidate who will be the target of his base’s ire?

And, also spanked by Phil Klein over at the American Spectator.

But beyond being ignorant, DeMint’s comments are dangerous. I’ve long argued that the Massachusetts health care plan is not only toxic to Mitt Romney’s presidential candidacy, but it could prove toxic to the entire Republican Party. If Romney is excused for crafting and signing the Massachusetts health care plan, it significantly undermines the case against ObamaCare and weakens the effort to repeal it. The reason is that opposition to ObamaCare will start to look increasingly political and less about principle. It’s true that a state mandate doesn’t raise the same Constitutional questions as the federal mandate, but it still is government forcing an individual to purchase a product. These comments are especially dangerous coming from DeMint, who is known as a leading conservative and ObamaCare opponent. Let’s hope it’s an isolated incident and not part of a broader trend.

Mitt Romney should NOT be the Republican Party’s Presidential nominee in 2012. RomneyCare and his numerous flip-flops over the decades make him untrustworthy and not worthy of my vote.

    Period.

His nomination will undercut the repeal of ObamaCare which should be one of the GOP’s first priorities. ObamaCare will ruin American health care, bust the budget wide open and imperil America’s survival.

As far as Jim DeMint is concerned. He is an OPPORTUNISTIC POL not a Tea Party activist.

Remember how DeMint has promised Indiana Senator Richard Lugar he would not help fund a primary challenge to him in 2012. I mean, Lugar is clearly a RINO, who is old and votes way too left for the modern day GOP. But, DeMint will sit on his hands.

Remember when DeMint funded Chuck DeVore in California against a conservative Carly Fiorina when DeVore had absolutely NO chance of winning?

DeMint is a conservative Senator, but he is a POL like all of the rest and when he supports/endorses Romney, it will just be another example.

Mitt Romney for Massachusetts United States Senate – Ted Kennedy’s Seat?

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., left, and Republican challenger Mitt Romney argue while answering a question concerning welfare during a televised debate Oct. 27, 1994, at Holyoke Community College in Holyoke, Mass. Kennedy, the liberal lion of the Senate, has died after battling a brain tumor. He was 77.

And, why not consider the race?

Surprisingly enough, this brings things back full circle to Romney, who up to now has been busy laying the groundwork for another presidential bid in 2012. It would be an intriguing thing if, after waiting a day or two out of respect for the late senator, Romney were to downshift and announce he will be a candidate in the upcoming election to fill Kennedy’s vacant Senate seat.
Such an announcement would likely be embraced immediately by the Republicans, who would like almost nothing more than to deny Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada his new, hard-won, 60-vote, filibuster-proof majority. As a self-funding candidate who has already been elected once statewide, Romney has nearly 100 percent name ID. And, in an environment where President Obama seems to be dragging the Democrats down, he would be a serious threat to the Democratic hegemony in Massachusetts’s congressional delegation. Meaning Romney likely would win.

Well, Mitt wants to be President and it is uncertain whether President Obama will be vilnerable in 2012 anyway. And, Romney sure as hell could beat Democrat Congressman Barney Frank.

I think this an intriguing proposition because I do believe Romney can win this race, setting the stage for a Presidency campaign either in 2012 or 2016.

    Stay tuned……

Mitt Romney Watch: Concord, New Hampshire Paper Excoriates Romney

Republican presidential hopeful, Mitt Romney, speaks at a town-hall style meeting at the American Legion Hall, Friday, Dec. 21, 2007, in Rochester, N.H.

    The Concord Monitor:

Romney should not be the next president

If you were building a Republican presidential candidate from a kit, imagine what pieces you might use: an athletic build, ramrod posture, Reaganesque hair, a charismatic speaking style and a crisp dark suit. You’d add a beautiful wife and family, a wildly successful business career and just enough executive government experience. You’d pour in some old GOP bromides – spending cuts and lower taxes – plus some new positions for 2008: anti-immigrant rhetoric and a focus on faith.

Add it all up and you get Mitt Romney, a disquieting figure who sure looks like the next president and most surely must be stopped.

Romney’s main business experience is as a management consultant, a field in which smart, fast-moving specialists often advise corporations on how to reinvent themselves. His memoir is called Turnaround – the story of his successful rescue of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City – but the most stunning turnaround he has engineered is his own political career.

If you followed only his tenure as governor of Massachusetts, you might imagine Romney as a pragmatic moderate with liberal positions on numerous social issues and an ability to work well with Democrats. If you followed only his campaign for president, you’d swear he was a red-meat conservative, pandering to the religious right, whatever the cost. Pay attention to both, and you’re left to wonder if there’s anything at all at his core.

As a candidate for the U.S. Senate in 1994, he boasted that he would be a stronger advocate of gay rights than his opponent, Ted Kennedy. These days, he makes a point of his opposition to gay marriage and adoption.

There was a time that he said he wanted to make contraception more available – and a time that he vetoed a bill to sell it over-the-counter.

The old Romney assured voters he was pro-choice on abortion. “You will not see me wavering on that,” he said in 1994, and he cited the tragedy of a relative’s botched illegal abortion as the reason to keep abortions safe and legal. These days, he describes himself as pro-life.

There was a time that he supported stem-cell research and cited his own wife’s multiple sclerosis in explaining his thinking; such research, he reasoned, could help families like his. These days, he largely opposes it. As a candidate for governor, Romney dismissed an anti-tax pledge as a gimmick. In this race, he was the first to sign.

People can change, and intransigence is not necessarily a virtue. But Romney has yet to explain this particular set of turnarounds in a way that convinces voters they are based on anything other than his own ambition.

In the 2008 campaign for president, there are numerous issues on which Romney has no record, and so voters must take him at his word. On these issues, those words are often chilling. While other candidates of both parties speak of restoring America’s moral leadership in the world, Romney has said he’d like to “double” the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, where inmates have been held for years without formal charge or access to the courts. He dodges the issue of torture – unable to say, simply, that waterboarding is torture and America won’t do it.

When New Hampshire partisans are asked to defend the state’s first-in-the-nation primary, we talk about our ability to see the candidates up close, ask tough questions and see through the baloney. If a candidate is a phony, we assure ourselves and the rest of the world, we’ll know it.

Mitt Romney is such a candidate. New Hampshire Republicans and independents must vote no.

    ***********

    Wow, Mitt Romney is a PHONY…..Fancy that…..

Mitt Romney Attacks John McCain for “Failing Reagan 101”

West Michigan Republicans call on Mitt Romney to apologize for his comments about Ronald Reagan

Mitt Romney attacked Senator John McCain in New Hampshire today for “failing Reagan 101.”

At a campaign event in North Conway, NH, an audience member asked Romney “Could you tell us why we should vote for you over the Senator from Arizona?”

Romney first said McCain was “a good man and a national hero,” before quickly segueing to the issue of the tax cuts. “He voted against the Bush tax cuts. Twice…. That’s failing Reagan 101,” Romney said.

And, where was Mitt Romney during the Reagain-Bush era?

Hell, he wasn’t even a Republican.

John McCain can be attacked for opposing the Bush tax cuts, but he is for them now and wants to make them permanent. However, Romney has no pure record of tax cuts either since he raised fees and “closed tax loopholes” ( both ACTUALLY tax increases) while Governor of Massachusetts.

Mitt Romney has another HYPOCRITICAL attack moment. Next, Romney will say that McCain is a flip-flopper because of his change of mind on the Bush tax cuts.

Romney seems a bit more forgiving of his own changes in position. “If you’re looking for someone who’s never changed any positions on any policies, them I’m not your guy,” Romney said about changing his position on the issue of abortion while on NBC’s Meet The Press.

A compliment from hypocrite, flip-flop Mitt who changes his mind whenever it suits him politically.

    Update:

    McCain’s campaign responds:

“From his claims of being a ‘lifelong hunter’ to receiving the NRA’s endorsement to marching with Martin Luther King Jr., it’s clear that Mitt Romney has trouble with the truth,” said Chuck Douglas, a former New Hampshire congressman and designated McCain surrogate there.

“His latest attacks are yet another example of his complete inability to level with the voters of New Hampshire. The facts are clear: Romney refused to endorse the Bush tax cuts he now claims to champion, maybe because he was too busy raising taxes in Massachusetts by over $700 million per year — more than any other state — in his first year in office.”

“New Hampshire voters expect and deserve integrity and authenticity in their leaders, not someone who changes his positions to fit the politics of the moment and can’t seem to tell the truth.”

    OUCH……..

Mitt Romney Watch: Planned Parenthood Support Plagues Romney Campaign

    romneydecember18bweb

Mitt Romney and wife Ann attending Planned Parenthood Fundraiser

Mitt Romney’s Pro-Choice past is starting to come back to haunt his campaign for the Presidency.

ABC News’ Rick Klein Reports: Mitt Romney attended a fund-raising reception for Planned Parenthood in 1994 in conjunction with a $150 donation his wife made to the organization — notwithstanding Romney’s contention that he had “no recollection” of the circumstances under which his wife made gave money to the abortion-rights group.

In the photograph obtained by ABC News, Romney and his wife, Ann, are shown in a yellow-and-white tent chatting with local political activists, including Nicki Nichols Gamble, who was then president and CEO of the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts.

Nichols Gamble — whose back is the camera in the photograph — told ABC that the event was a Planned Parenthood fundraising “house party” in Cohasset, Mass., in June 1994. At the time, Romney, R-Mass., was locked in a tight Senate campaign with Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., and was touting his support for abortion rights.

    No recollection, eh, Mitt?

Is this another Romney LIE like the Meet the Press Press – National Rifle Association (NRA) one?

Or is it just another cover-up of a classic Romney FLIP-FLOP?

    Take your pick……

Flap is sure a mailer and a television ad are being prepared like this one John McCain is using already in New Hampshire – except the subject will be abortion and stem cell research.

Mitt Romney’s Hypocritical Iowa Illegal Immigration Mail

    romneynovember30bweb

Mitt Romney drops this contrast mail piece in Iowa this next week.

For the first time, Mitt Romney is using paid media to go after his nearest Iowa rival, Mike Huckabee.

In a mail piece that hit Hawkeye State households this week, Romney compares his stance on immigration to all four of his top GOP rivals, including the one who has moved into a statistical dead heat with him in Iowa. In a previous mailer in the state on gay marriage, Romney ignored Huckabee (who also supports a constitutional amendment on the issue)

Of course, Romney’s opponents will take issue with how their immigration views are presented and will hasten to point out that in the fall of 2006 the then-Massachusetts governor was much more sympathetic to offering illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship.

    Hypocritical, you ask?

Yes, especially since Mitt Romney’s record is as moderate as many of his competitors:

    • While Romney was governor, the commonwealth of Massachusetts became one of the six states with the largest growth in unauthorized migrant population, from 2002 to 2004, according to the Pew Hispanic Center, with somewhere between 200,000-250,000 new illegal immigrants.
    • In the past, Governor Romney supported more LIBERAL positions on illegal immigration than the 2007 recently failed Kennedy-McCain legislation. In fact, he supported President Bush and Senator McCain’s efforts to change current law in favor of “AMNESTY.”
    • During Romney’s Term, Proposed State Aid To These Sanctuary Cities Increased 4.07%, From $103,218,421 In FY2004 To $107,419,246 In FY2007.
    • Romney’s Last Minute Agreement With Federal Government To Allow State Troopers To Enforce Immigration Laws Was Rescinded Before It Was Ever Implemented.

Might this be a televised response by Huckabee?

    Stay tuned…….

Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney “DUKE IT OUT” Over Illegal Immigration

Republican presidential candidates, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney (L) and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani are shown on stage during the CNN/YouTube/Republican Party of Florida presidential debate in St. Petersburg, Florida, November 28, 2007.

Well, Flap was wrong about the You Tube Debate. It certainly was NOT boring.

First up, Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney aggressively discussing illegal immigration.

Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney scornfully debated immigration Wednesday in a testy personal exchange in which Giuliani accused Romney of employing illegal immigrants at his home and running a “sanctuary mansion.”

Giuliani criticized Romney after the former Massachusetts governor claimed Giuliani had retained New York’s status as a sanctuary city while he was mayor.

Romney said it would “not be American” to check the papers of workers employed by a contractor simply because they have a “funny accent.” He had landscapers at his Belmont, Mass., home who turned out were in the country illegally.

Giuliani shot back, calling Romney’s attitude “holier than thou.”

“Mitt usually criticizes people when he usually has the far worse record,” Giuliani said.

The Mayor was RIGHT on Romney’s hypocrisy. In fact, it is about time someone called Mitt on Massachusetts sanctuary cities and his employment of illegal alien Guatemalans at his mansion.

    Here is Mitt’s hypocrisy:

So, why is Mitt Romney hypocritically attacking the Mayor?

Mitt Romney WILL Say and Do Anything to trash his opponents and get himself elected.

Is this who American voters want as their next President?

Flap says no and is glad the Mayor FINALLY called Romney out on illegal immigration.

Mitt Romney Mormon-Gate Watch: New Hampshire Attorney General in NO Hurry to Investigate

Mitt Romney: Push Poll Charges Are like 9/11 Conspiracy Theories

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s office seems to be in NO HURRY to investigate the Mormon-Gate FLAP.

I just spoke with New Hampshire Assistant General James Kennedy who is in charge of the so-called push poll call investigation. Mr. Kennedy says he “is in the process of identifying” victims and determining whether there has been a violation of NH law. He reiterates that push poll calling is “not in and of itself” a violation of state law but failure to identify the entity who is making the call is a violation. There is no time frame for completion of the investigation and he indicated that “it is not our concern” whether it is completed before the January 8 primary, but only to determine whether NH law has been violated. A violation is punishable by a $1000 fine or by misdemeanor or felony (with up to seven years imprisonment). So far they have spoken to only “a few” NH residents. Subpoenas have not yet been issued to any of the campaigns but Western Wats has been “contacted.”

Wouldn’t it be appropriate for New Hampshire officials to speedily complete an investigation so that New Hampshire voters have “complete” information regarding the conduct of their elections?

    Why, of course.

Will the New Hamsphire Attorney General’s office get off their asses and investigate?

    Anyone’s guess.

    Stay tuned………

Mitt Romney Watch: Romney HYPOCRITICAL on Illegal Immigration AGAIN

Click the play button below to hear former governor Mitt Romney discuss Senator John McCain’s immigration reform plan in a 2005 interview with the Globe (11/30/05).

Flap heard Mitt Romney being interviewed by Sean Hannity on his radio show yesterday afternoon bashing Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Senator McCain on the issue of illegal immigration and “Sanctuary Cities.”

Flap has said before and will say again: Mitt Romney is a hypocritical Flip-Flopper on this issue.

Why, does Flap say this, you ask?

Now, let’s look at HYPOCRITE Mitt:

    1. Illegal Alien Guatemalans mowing his mansion grounds for ten years.

    2. While Romney was governor, the commonwealth of Massachusetts became one of the six states with the largest growth in unauthorized migrant population, from 2002 to 2004, according to the Pew Hispanic Center, with somewhere between 200,000-250,000 new illegal immigrants.

    3. In the past, Governor Romney supported more LIBERAL positions on illegal immigration than the 2007 recently failed Kennedy-McCain legislation. In fact, he supported President Bush and Senator McCain’s efforts to change current law in favor of “AMNESTY.”

    4. And here is Mitt Romney FLIP – FLOPPING on illegal immigration positions:

    Say what?

    5. In 2006, Romney said “those that are here paying taxes and not taking government benefits should begin a process toward application for citizenship, as they would from their home country.”

    6. Romney Couldn’t Even Enforce Immigration Laws In State Government Payrolls.

A Globe analysis of nine recent public works projects … revealed that of 242 workers on weekly payroll lists, more than a third appeared to lack legitimate Social Security numbers. On one of the payrolls reviewed, for masonry work on the UMass dormitory project, nearly two-thirds of the contractor’s 87 workers had bogus or questionable Social Security numbers. … A spokesman for Governor Mitt Romney said it was unsurprising state money was used to pay undocumented immigrants. ‘The governor is not surprised that our current immigration laws are a mess,’ said Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom.” (Jonathan Saltazman and Yvonne Abraham, “Fake IDs Are Rife At State Job Sites,” The Boston Globe, 6/18/06)

    7. As Governor, Mitt Romney Recommended Over $408 Million In State Aid To Massachusetts Sanctuary Cities Cambridge, Orleans, Somerville, Brookline, Brewster And Lexington.

    8. During Romney’s Term, Proposed State Aid To These Sanctuary Cities Increased 4.07%, From $103,218,421 In FY2004 To $107,419,246 In FY2007.

    9. Romney’s Last Minute Agreement With Federal Government To Allow State Troopers To Enforce Immigration Laws Was Rescinded Before It Was Ever Implemented.

“While it is technically true that Romney ‘signed an agreement with the federal government to allow state troopers to enforce federal immigration laws,’ he only did so in the closing weeks of his term, and the program never actually went into effect because it was rescinded by Romney’s successor even before the state troopers began training.” (Philip Klein, “Sanctuary Cities in Romney’s Massachusetts,” American Spectator’s Blog, www.spectator.com, 8/9/07)

So, why is Mitt Romney hypocritically attacking the Mayor and Senator McCain, when he has all of this political baggage?
    Because:

    romneymittvsfactweb

Mitt Romney WILL Say and Do Anything to trash his opponents and get himself elected.

Mitt Romney Mormon-Gate Watch: Who Did it?

Republican presidential hopeful, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, speaks during a town hall-style meeting in Henderson, Nev., Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007.

Remember the Flap and Scandal about someone or some campaign either conducting anti-Mormon and anti-Romney “PUSH POLLS” or represented telephone calls as polls.

Now, the Attorney General of New Hampshire is investigating the matter since it is illegal in New Hampshire to conduct such surveys over the telephone without disclosing the identity on whose behalf the call is made or who the phone survey/caller is opposing.

Deputy Attorney General Bud Fitch said New Hampshire has never prosecuted a case involving such calls but was moving forward. He cautioned against expecting an immediate resolution.

“Generally, these investigations can take at least several days and sometimes several weeks,” Fitch said.

Among the questions the caller asked was whether the person receiving the call knew Romney was a Mormon, that he received military deferments when he served as a Mormon missionary in France, that his five sons did not serve in the military, that Romney’s faith did not accept blacks as bishops into the 1970s and that Mormons believe the Book of Mormon is superior to the Bible.

“It started out like all the other calls. … Then all of the sudden it got very unsettling and very negative,” said Anne Baker, an independent voter who was called in Hollis, N.H.

Who is behind the telephone calls/polls?

There are a number of theories:

Roger Stone, a long time GOP political consultant points to Mitt Romney.

Just as Bobby Kennedy was behind anti-Catholic calls and literature to Catholic Households in The 1960 Democratic Party. I smell a dirty trick. I suspect a pro-Romney motive to inoculate against future use of the religious issue and to breed sympathy for Romney.

No respectable Republican polling firm like Tarrance would be involved with this.

PS- a 20-minute call is the work of an amateur. The long call is designed to get ALL the negatives out, to put them off limits for future attacks.

    STONE

Soren Dayton, a GOP consultant also points to Romney.

To prove a crime, you need means, motive, and opportunity. The Romney campaign has the motive. They have the means financially, intellectually, and logistically. And there is lots of circumstantial evidence linking the Romney campaign and his supporters to the people that used the weapon. Opportunity? Well, that’s self-evident, if it happens.

There’s a case here. More facts are necessary, but there’s a real case.

Mitt Romney’s campaign has denied involvement.

Erick Erickson from Redstate thinks it is a friend of a campaign including Romney’s.

Friends can be so well intentioned, yet so dumb sometimes. I’m talking about these anti-Mormon phone calls in New Hampshire and Iowa. I suspect close friends of one of the candidates are behind the calls. It would not surprise me if a friend of Mitt Romney’s, thinking it’d do some good, was behind the calls. That’s not to say it was a Romney friend, but I think that is just as plausible as a Huck friend, McCain friend, Rudy friend, or Thompson friend.

Jim Geraghty at National Review Online says someone with DEEP Pockets.

First, it’s both Iowa and New Hampshire, no? So that would boost the cost even higher, and make the likelihood of a bunch of renegade supporters of anybody less likely. On the other hand, I find a hard time buying the idea that any campaign would consider playing this card worth the risks. If and when the New Hampshire Attorney General names someone, I suspect we’ll find somebody with deep pockets, a relatively new desire to play in the political game, and little concern about long-term relationships in the GOP.

    So, who dunnit?

Flap bets that it is either a LEFTY or LIBERTARIAN based 527 group with stealth/unreported donors. Either of these groups have an incentive to smear the GOP.

Will those responsible be “OUTED” prior to the New Hampshire primary?

Only if Western Wats’ folks are called before a Grand Jury and squeal who hired them or someone who made the calls is paid or threatened with criminal prosecution to RAT OUT the donors.

    Stay tuned…..
