Mitt Romney FLIP Watch: The Log Cabin Ad

Log Cabin Republicans Release Anti-Romney Ad
In one of Mitt Romney’s early TV spots, an announcer described how, “In one of the most liberal states in the country, one Republican stood up†for various conservative issues, such as “traditional marriage and the sanctity of human life.†Not so fast, say the Log Cabin Republicans, the major gay Republican group. It has put out a new ad today featuring a very liberal sounding Mitt Romney. The spot comes off as pro-Romney, boasting of his “Massachusetts values,’’ which is a fairly brutal thing to say considering that the Log Cabin Republicans plan to run the spot not only locally in Iowa for two weeks, but also on Fox News (!!).
Flap just saw the ad air on Fox News. It may not hurt Romney directly but will frame the issue of FLIPPER MITT and paints him as a HYPOCRITE.
The Log Cabin Republicans also have a web page highlighting FLIPPER MITT.
Some Highlights:
ABORTIONFrom the Left:Romney ran against Senator Edward M. Kennedy in 1994. During a debate, Romney declared: “I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country. I have since the time that my mom took that position when she ran in 1970 as a US Senate candidate. I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years we should sustain and support it.”
– Boston Globe, March 2, 2006“I respect and will protect a woman’s right to choose.”
-2002 Questionnaire for the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL)
Boston Globe, July 3, 2005From the Right:
“I am pro-life. I believe that abortion is the wrong choice except in cases of incest, rape, and to save the life of the mother. I wish the people of America agreed, and that the laws of our nation could reflect that view. But while the nation remains so divided over abortion, I believe that the states, through the democratic process, should determine their own abortion laws and not have them dictated by judicial mandate.”
– Boston Globe, Op-Ed, July 26, 2005More from the Right:
“Every decision I have made as Governor in a very liberal state has been on the side of favoring life.” – Governor Romney
– Robert Behre, “Romney Gets S.C. Support,” Charleston Post-Courier, January 30, 2007
TAXES
From the Left:
“Governor Romney…imposed a slew of fee hikes and tax ‘loophole’ closures….The largest of these was $259 million worth of fee hikes in FY 2004, the bulk of which came from higher Registry of Deeds fees. Smaller fee hikes, including higher charges for boaters and golfers, we imposed in FY 2003 and FY 2005. Romney also sought $128 million worth of so-called tax loophole closures for FY 2004; $70 million for FY 2005; and $170 million for FY 2006, which were later reduced to $85 million due to backlash from business leaders.”
– Club for Growth’s White Paper on Mitt Romney“Romney continues to oppose the flat tax with harsh language, calling the tax ‘unfair.'”
– Club for Growth’s White Paper on Mitt RomneyRomney didn’t support President Bush’s tax cuts in 2003. That earned him praise from liberal Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA)
– Boston Globe, April 11, 2003.From the Right:
“I said no to a tax hike; raising taxes hurts working people and scares away jobs. I also said no to more borrowing; borrowing just shifts our problems to the backs of our kids…Instead, I went after waste, inefficiency, duplication, and patronage.”
– Governor Romney, Boston Globe, October 24, 2005NO NEW TAXES PLEDGE
From the Left:
In 2002, Romney broke with his predecessor, Jane Swift, and Republican governors before her by declining to sign a written vow not to raise taxes once in office.
– Boston Globe, January 5, 2007 Read the article
From the Right:
Almost five years after he refused to sign a “no new taxes” pledge during his campaign for governor, Mitt Romney announced yesterday that he had done just that, as his campaign for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination began in earnest.
– Boston Globe, January 5, 2007 Read the articleCAMPAIGN FINANCE LAWS
From the Left:
Governor Romney has changed his position on key campaign finance reform issues several times during public life. During his 1994 Senate campaign, he held far left positions that advocated for abolishing PACs and creating strict campaign spending limits.
– Club for Growth’s White Paper on Mitt Romney
From the Right:
As he runs for President, Romney abandoned his previous stance and has come out as a harsh critic of McCain-Feingold, and those presidential candidates who support it. His transformation has even propelled him to call for the legislation’s repeal.
– Club for Growth’s White Paper on Mitt RomneyON HIS FAVORITE BOOK
From the Left:
He told Fox News his favorite book is L. Ron Hubbard’s “Battlefield Earth”
From the Right:
He also told Fox news his favorite book is the The Bible
Or
Who Knows:
His MySpace page said his favorite book is “Huckleberry Finn”

Mitt Romney FLIP Watch: Hillary Health Care 2.0 Similar to Romney’s Health Care Plan
A combination image shows (L) Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and (R) Democratic presidential candidate and Senator Hillary Clinton. Experts say Clinton’s health plan borrows heavily from one Romney signed into law when he was governor of Massachusetts, which made the liberal state the first in the United States with near-universal health insurance.
Romney, Clinton health care plans similar: experts
When it comes to health care, Republican Mitt Romney loves to take swipes at Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.
He calls Clinton’s plan, which would require every American to have health insurance, “European-style socialized medicine” and derides it as inspired by “European bureaucracies.”
Romney is quick to remind supporters of the U.S. senator from New York’s dramatic 1993 failure to reform U.S. health care, which many Americans felt overstepped the role of first lady.
Despite all that, experts say Clinton’s plan borrows heavily from one Romney signed into law when he was governor of Massachusetts, which made the liberal state the first in the United States with near-universal health insurance.
That similarity could be fodder for Romney’s rivals vying to be the 2008 Republican presidential nominee.
“Hillary’s plan is just like the Massachusetts plan. There’s not a whole lot of difference,” said Jonathan Gruber, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology economics professor who was an adviser to Romney on the state’s health care reform law.
Like Clinton’s plan, the law Romney signed in April 2006 is underpinned by an “individual mandate” compelling people to buy health insurance. Both plans entail subsidies and government regulations. For those in Massachusetts earning less than the federal poverty level of $9,800, free coverage is provided.
But, Hillary’s Health Care Plan 2.0 is similar to Romney’s Health Care Plan 1.0.
Here is a Hillary Clinton ad that invokes 9/11 for her universal health care plan or Hillary 2.0:

Flap has criticized the then Massachusetts Governor Romney for his “universal†and “socialized†plan. You know the one Hillary Clinton has praised and supported by Teddy Kennedy.
But, Mitt has FLIPPED from this plan and Flap noted his NEW position here.
The problem with comparing Romney’s positions is that he changes them every week or whenever it is expedient to him politically. In THIS, Mitt and Hillary are very similar.
By the way, here is conservative health care expert Sally Pipes on Romney 1.0:Conservatives mostly understand the problems associated with the direct government provision of products and services — poor quality, shortages, high taxes, and shoddy service. What they must also understand is that forcing an individual to purchase health insurance is merely a rest stop on the journey to the same destination.
The best way to make health insurance available to the greatest number of people is to make sure that it can be provided at the lowest possible prices. Instead of abolishing the government regulations that have raised the cost of health insurance in Massachusetts, Governor Romney has proposed that the government should pay for the health insurance of the very people for whom the government made health insurance unaffordable.
Here is Mitt as of May on his 1.0 and 2.0 plans:

Flap is NOW confused because of the changing Romney positions.
Though it was his crowning achievement as governor, Romney has distanced himself from aspects of the law that offend his party’s conservative base, including the extent of the government’s role. He has proposed a plan that includes federal tax breaks and incentives to states to help the 47 million uninsured Americans afford coverage.
“What works in Massachusetts may not work in Texas,” Romney said at a campaign stop in Salt Lake City, Utah.
And he wrote recently in The Wall Street Journal, “As governor of Massachusetts, I led the fight for reforms that used free markets and innovation, rather than big-government control, to lower health care costs and cover the uninsured.”
Flap thinks Mitt Romney is confused as well.

Mitt Romney Watch: Romney Health Care 2.0 – Another FLIP for MITT
Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney delivers his annual State of the Commonwealth, January 18, 2006. Massachusetts lawmakers overwhelmingly approved an ambitious health-care bill on Tuesday that would make it the first U.S. state to require nearly all residents to be insured or face penalties.
Is this another FLIP for MITT?
Apparently so……..
A far worse camel’s nose is the “universal” plan Mr. Romney championed in Massachusetts. As Democratic Presidential candidate John Edwards put it, “If universal health care was good enough for Massachusetts, why isn’t it good enough for the rest of the country?”
It’s not an unfair question. Mr. Romney’s Bay State legacy is now praised by liberals as a prototype for national policy. That’s done a great deal to set back the kind of tax reform that he now espouses. The issue for GOP primary voters to consider is why he went in such a different direction in Boston. Granted, a mere Governor couldn’t restructure the federal tax code, and he was dealing with a far-left legislature. Yet his willingness to compromise in Massachusetts on core matters of principle, and then trumpet those statist policies as a “free-market” solution, raises questions about how far and easily he’d bend to a Democratic Congress.
Mr. Romney’s conversion to free-market health-care thinking is nonetheless welcome — assuming he believes it.
Flap has criticized the then Massachusetts Governor Romney for his “universal” and “socialized” plan. You know the one Hillary Clinton has praised and supported by Teddy Kennedy.
Sally Pipes over at National Review had this criticism.
Conservatives mostly understand the problems associated with the direct government provision of products and services — poor quality, shortages, high taxes, and shoddy service.
But, wait, in Romney’s health care plan 2.0 he has eliminated the mandates he championed in Massachusetts.
The problem Mitt has had with his campaign is he simply is NOT CREDIBLE on the issues.
Health care is yet another in his flips and oddities.
And if this is not enough to convince ANY voter that Romney is NOT right for the Presidency, then check out his other inconsistencies and oddities:Scientology book one of his favorites

Mitt Romney Watch: Mitt FLIPS on Abortion AGAIN

Nevada political columnist Jon Ralston with Mitt Romney in a televised interview, August 22, 2007
In a Nevada televised interview, Mitt Romney contradicts himself again on the issue of abortion.
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Tuesday in a Nevada television interview that he supports letting states “make their own decision” about whether to keep abortion legal.
“My view is that the Supreme Court has made an error in saying at the national level one size fits all for the whole nation,” Romney told Nevada political columnist Jon Ralston in a televised interview. “Instead, I would let states make their choices.”
Asked by Ralston if it was “OK” with him that Nevada is a “pro-choice state,” Romney said, “I’d let states make their own decision in this regard. My view, of course, is I’m a pro-life individual. That’s the position I support. But, I’d let states have this choice rather than let the federal government have it.”
Remember Romney was pro-choice when he ran against Teddy Kennedy for United States Senate in 1994 and later when he ran for Massachusetts Governor.

But, then Mitt flipped to pro-life.
Here are Mitt’s positions on abortion AGAIN:
- 1994: Mitt Romney was pro-choice:“I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country. I have since the time that my mom took that position when she ran in 1970 as a US Senate candidate. I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years we should sustain and support it.†(Joan Vennochi, “Romney’s Revolving World,†The Boston Globe, 3/2/06)
- 2001: Mitt Romney was not pro-choice:“I do not wish to be labeled pro-choice.†(Mitt Romney, Letter to the Editor, The Salt Lake Tribune, 7/12/01)
- 2002: Mitt Romney was again pro-choice:“I respect and will protect a woman’s right to choose. This choice is a deeply personal one … Women should be free to choose based on their own beliefs, not mine and not the government’s.†(Stephanie Ebbert, “Clarity Sought On Romney’s Abortion Stance,†The Boston Globe, 7/3/05)
- November 2004: Mitt Romney said he converted to the pro-life position.Romney said he changed his views after meeting with Harvard scientists on stem-cell research: ‘It hit me very hard that we had so cheapened the value of human life in a Roe v. Wade environment that it was important to stand for the dignity of human life.’ (Karen Tumulty, “What Romney Believes,†Time, 5/21/07)
- May 2005: Mitt Romney reaffirmed that he was “absolutely committed†to support the pro-choice position.Six months after he claimed to have converted to the pro-life position, Romney stated: “I am absolutely committed to my promise to maintain the status quo with regards to laws relating to abortion and choice and so far I’ve been able to successfully do that and my personal philosophical views about this issue is not something that I think would do anything other than distract from what I think is a more critical agenda …†(Mitt Romney, Remarks At Press Conference, 5/27/05)
- January 2007: Mitt Romney acknowledged he was “effectively pro-choice.â€On January 29, 2007 during a visit to South Carolina, Romney stated: “Over the last multiple years, as you know, I have been effectively pro-choice.†(Bruce Smith, “Romney Campaigns in SC with Sen. DeMint,†The Associated Press, 1/29/07)
- February 2007: Mitt Romney stated that he “was always for life.â€On another campaign stop in South Carolina, Romney stated: “I am firmly pro-life… I was always for life.†(Jim Davenport, “Romney Affirms Opposition to Abortion,†The Associated Press, 2/9/2007)
And now Mitt says that let the states decide whether an abortion is legal, or not? What kind of PRO-LIFE position is that?
Not much of one………
Yet, in the same piece by ABC News, a Romney spokesperson issues pushback with a lame rationale of Romney’s opposition to Roe v. Wade and his support for a Human Life Amendment.
“We should aspire to passing a Human Life Amendment when the country as a whole is prepared for it,” Romney spokesman Kevin Madden told ABC News. “The American people just aren’t there yet.”
But, sir, letting the states decide will do just that – LET THE STATES DECIDE.
How does that accomplish the outlawing of abortion?
Answer: It doesn’t.
Mitt Romney FLIPs again on the abortion issue?

Perhaps, but did he REALLY FLIP the first time?
Damn, man, stay with a position and stick with it. People may say that you are either dishonest or disingenuous or all of the above.

Mitt Romney Watch: Romney HYPOCRITICAL on Illegal Immigration Sanctuary Cities
Republican presidential hopeful former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney stands in front of the fence separating the United States from Mexico while answering questions concerning his immigration policy during a visit Monday Aug. 13, 2007 in San Diego. Romney is flanked by campaign aide Tony Strickland, left, and Calif. State Senator Mark Wyland.
Last week Mitt Romney criticized Mayor Rudy Giuliani on the illegal immigration issue and the fact that New York City was a so-called “sanctuary city” during Rudy’s tenure as Mayor.
If you remember, Flap called Romney a HYPOCRITE for his outburst. And why?
1. Illegal Alien Guatemalans mowing his mansion grounds for ten years.
2. While Romney was governor, the commonwealth of Massachusetts became one of the six states with the largest growth in unauthorized migrant population, from 2002 to 2004, according to the Pew Hispanic Center, with somewhere between 200,000-250,000 new illegal immigrants.

3. In the past, Governor Romney supported more LIBERAL positions on illegal immigration than the 2007 recently failed Kennedy-McCain legislation. In fact, he supported President Bush and Senator McCain’s efforts to change current law in favor of “AMNESTY.â€
4. And here is Mitt Romney FLIP – FLOPPING on illegal immigration positions:

Say what?
“Romney’s being a hypocrite on this issue,” said Joseph Curtatone, the Democratic mayor of Somerville since 2004. “I did not receive any mandate, any communication, anything at all from him about this. If it’s so important to him why didn’t he have the state police enforcing it?”
Curtatone, president of the Massachusetts Mayors Association, adds that his May 2006 declaration of Somerville as a “city of hope” committed to providing services to illegal immigrants was just official recognition of what exists everywhere in his state.
“I don’t know of any community in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts — whether by official declaration or by their action — who has not adopted the same policy,” he said. I never heard Gov. Romney bring it up one way or another.”
So, is Romney flipping on sanctuary cities, or being dishonestly hypocritical AGAIN?
Mitt Romney = HYPOCRITE

Rudy Giuliani Watch: Mitt Romney HYPOCRITICALLY Attacks Giuliani on Illegal Immigration
Republican presidential candidates John McCain (L) Rudy Giuliani (C) and Mitt Romney stand at their podiums during the Republican Debate at Drake University in Des Moines, August 5, 2007.
Former Massachusetts Governor and Presidential candidate Mitt Romney attacked Rudy Giuliani today by implying the Mayor supported illegal immigration while he was Mayor of New York City.
Preposterous and besides the Mayor’s record is clear.
Now, let’s look at HYPOCRITE Mitt:

5. In 2006, Romney said “those that are here paying taxes and not taking government benefits should begin a process toward application for citizenship, as they would from their home country.”
So, why is Mitt Romney attacking the Mayor?
BECAUSE
Romney is behind in the polls.
Mitt Romney = HYPOCRITE
Mitt Romney = WRONG for America.

Mitt Romney Watch: Another Flip – Immigration
Watch the video and compare it to this:
Well, Mitt make up your mind.
Sheesh……….
Update:
Border security group attacks Romney for flip-flopping on immigration
In 2006 Governor Romney supported the President’s immigration policy as well as the McCain-Kennedy bill. He expressed support for an immigration program that places large numbers of illegal residents on the path toward citizenship and said illegal immigrants should have a chance to obtain citizenship.
He even went as far as to say that Republicans that break from the President on this issue are making a “big mistake” according to the Associated Press.
…
Governor Romney has a long history of flip-flops on issues from abortion, to gun control, to gay rights. This pattern of shifting positions should concern Iowa conservatives who are dedicated to securing our border and solving the illegal immigration crisis.

Mitt Romney Watch: Massachusetts Republicans for Truth
AP: Massachusetts critics plan anti-Romney Web site
A group of Massachusetts Republicans is planning to launch a Web site on Monday that highlights flip-flops in the record of their former leader, presidential contender Mitt Romney.
The so-called Massachusetts Republicans for Truth is also pledging to run radio and television ads across the country as Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, seeks the 2008 GOP presidential nomination.
He has acknowledged changing from a supporter of abortion rights to an opponent, and recently signed a no-new-taxes pledge that his gubernatorial spokesman had previously labeled “gimmickry.” During a 1994 Senate race, Romney also pledged to be more effective in fighting for gay rights than his opponent, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., although today Romney highlights his ardent opposition to gay marriage.
Will this be the beginning of the end of Romney’s candidacy?
Flap doesn’t think that Mitt’s campaign has ever really taken hold…….

Rudy Giuliani Watch: Giuliani and Edwards Top Latest Iowa Poll
****UPDATE****Â
The latest national Gallup Poll is out:
Gallup Poll. Jan. 12-14, 2007. N=412 Republicans and Republican leaners nationwide. MoE ± 5.
Giuliani – 31%
McCain – 27%
Gingrich – 10%
Romney – 7%
Rudy is pulling away from McCain.
Romney disappoints
Zogby International: Iowa Dems favor Edwards, GOP Favors Giuliani, McCain
Former vice presidential candidate John Edwards starts the new year with a double–digit lead over three impressive rivals a year before Iowans go to caucus to choose their next presidential nominee, a new Zogby telephone poll of likely Iowa Democratic caucus—goers shows.
Republicans are leaning toward two well–known moderates – Arizona Sen. John McCain and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani – in the race to replace George W. Bush at the top of their presidential ticket, a separate Zogby telephone survey of likely Republican caucus participants shows.
The poll results:
GOP: The Republican survey was conducted with 465 likely caucus-goers and was conducted January 15-16. It carries a margin of error of +/- 4.6 percentage points.
Giuliani – 19 %
McCain – 17%
Gingrich – 13%
Rice – 9%
Romney – 5%
Tancredo – 2%
Hagel – 2%
Not sure – 22%
Giuliani leads yet another poll over McCain and Gingrich makes a very respectable showing.
Romney disappoints
Democrats: The democratic survey included 596 likely caucus-goers and was conducted January 15-16. The margin of error is +/- 4.1 percentage points.
Edwards – 27%
Obama – 17%
Vilsack – 16%
Clinton – 16%
Biden – 3%
Kerry – 3%
Not sure – 13%
Edwards is doing well and Zogby asks if he is the Bobby Kennedy in the race? Edwards did well here in 2004.
Kerry disappoints
Hillary has her work cut out for her.
On the Republican side, the two most talked–about candidates are doing well and will fight it out for the support of moderate Republicans and independents. But our polling in this race also begs the question: Is Newt Gingrich the choice of the conservative wing? This is an impressive showing for him no matter which way you look at it. Should Newt’s support hold, he will complicate the efforts of Giuliani and McCain to move to the right. Condoleezza Rice represents the Bush mantle, but because she is not likely to run, Gingrich also stands to inherit that mantle. An interesting development can also be found in the 2% support for conservative Congressman Tom Tancredo of Colorado. It means that, if nothing else, he and Newt are going to influence the internal debate in the Republican Party.
Newt is the choice of conservatives. But, will he run? Or simply play Kingmaker at the GOP Convention?
A Giuliani Gingrich ticket will be very formidable.Nationally:
On the Republican side, nationally, Giuliani and McCain are the only top-tier candidates, with America’s mayor holding a small 21% to 17% lead over McCain. Gingrich won 8%, followed by Rice at 7%, who tied with former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney wins 6%, rounding out the second tier of Republican candidates.

Mitt Romney Watch: Romney on Abortion 1994 vs 2006 – Romney A Social Conservative?
Former Massachusetts Gov., Mitt Romney, R-Mass., left, sitting beside his wife, Ann Romney, in a convention center in Boston, Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, hangs up after asking his sister, Lynn Romney, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., for a donation. The call was the first from the call-center set up to begin fundraising for a possible presidential campaign.
AP: Romney says he was wrong on 1994 issues
A 1994 videotape mysteriously posted on YouTube.com prompted Republican Mitt Romney to declare Wednesday, “I was wrong on some issues back then,” while also insisting to social conservatives key to his presidential campaign that he is one of them.
The tape of a Senate debate between Romney and Sen. Edward M. Kennedy showed Romney defending a woman’s right to abortion, saying he supported allowing gays in the Boy Scouts and distancing himself from former President Reagan by noting he was a registered independent during the period the conservative icon was leading the nation.
All of the material has been previously published, but its presentation in video form — and on the easily shared YouTube medium — prompted an immediate response from Romney, who formed a presidential exploratory committee last week.
Ok, here is the video:
And the Governor’s response:
“If you want to know where I stand by the way, you don’t just have to listen to my words, you can go to look at my record as governor,” Romney said during a late-day appearance on the “Glenn and Helen Show,” a radio program featuring Tennessee psychologist Helen Smith and her husband, Glenn Reynolds.
“Frankly, in the bluest of states, facing the most liberal media in the country, I’ve led the fight to preserve traditional marriage. I’ve taken every legal step I could conceive of, to prevent same-sex marriage.”
A tape of Romney’s call was immediately posted on YouTube. Asked whom the campaign suspected of posting the tape, Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said: “It doesn’t matter. We used the very same mediums made available to those seeking to attack Governor Romney to set the record straight in his own words with the facts.”
The video:
So, is Mitt Romney a social conservative?
Doubtful…..
Is Mitt Romney a Reagan Republican?
No, he admits he was a registered independent
Flap never has had a problem supporting and voting for a Republican who has moderate or even liberal positions on social issues like abortion and gay rights. There is no litmus test in the GOP.
However, I have a problem with someone who is an opportunist and is not sincere in his/her beliefs.
Flap won’t be voting for Mitt Romney
