Tony Strickland Extends Vote Lead in California State Senate Race

Ventura and Santa Barbara County Election Divisions updated their totals today for the California State Senate District 19. Los Angeles County did not report an update today.

According to Flap’s math Republican Tony Strickland has extended his lead to 1,560 votes versus 540 votes yesterday.

    The raw figures:

Santa Barbara County (as of 4:32 PM today):

    • Hannah-Beth Jackson: 69,829
    • Tony Strickland: 56,522

Ventura County (as of 1:46 PM today):

    • Hannah-Beth Jackson: 104,920
    • Tony Strickland: 115,753

Los Angeles County (as of 4:49 PM yesterday)

    • Hannah-Beth Jackson: 11,322
    • Tony Strickland: 15,356

The Ventura County Star reports that Ventura County elections this afternoon added another 14,394 ballots to the results of last week’s election.

Ventura County has now counted 294,736 ballots, or about 88 percent of the those cast. The remaining 41,000 or so are absentee ballots that were handed in at the last minute, or provisional ballots, cast by voters whose registration status couldn’t be clearly determined on Election Day.

Because election officials don’t know where the uncounted ballots were cast, it’s impossible to know just how many votes are left up for grabs in each race. The county plans to release more results on Friday, but the final tally won’t be known until next week at the earliest.

Flap would rather be ahead by 1,500 votes than behind if this is any solace to Tony Strickland.

Stay tuned as Flap has absolutely no idea where the ballots are coming from or when the remaining ballots (late absentee and provisional) will be finally counted.

But, Flap will update as information becomes available.

Tony Strickland Re-Takes Vote Lead in California State Senate Race

Ventura County elections reported yesterday afternoon and former California Assemblyman Tony Strickland has retaken the lead over Democrat Hannah-Beth Jackson. This update has Srickland leading by 540 votes with over 357,000 cast.

Strickland passed Democrat Hannah-Beth Jackson, who had led by 255 votes going into the day, based on the results of 18,041 additional vote-by-mail ballots tabulated in Ventura County.

Neither of the two other counties that have 19th District voters, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, released additional results on Monday.

Los Angeles County is expected to provide updated vote counts today.

    Stay tuned…….

Tony Strickland Takes 840 Vote Lead in California State Senate Race

    strickland-and-jackson

Former California Assembly Members Tony Strickland and Hannah-Beth Jackson and candidates for California State Senate District 19

The lead comes from Ventura County mail-in ballots which were received after the time to process them before election day.

Republican Tony Strickland took an 840-vote lead over Democrat Hannah-Beth Jackson Thursday in the oh-so-close balloting in the 19th Senate District, the first day of what could be a monthlong process to determine the winner of the most expensive political contest in Ventura County history.

Strickland emerged with a lead after Ventura County election officials counted 11,294 mail-in-ballots that hadn’t been received in time to process before Election Day. His 948-vote net gain allowed him to leapfrog ahead of Jackson, who led by 108 votes after election night.

The votes counted Thursday were exceptionally rich for Strickland. He was the choice on 58.6 percent of the new ballots counted, well above the percentage by which he carried Ventura County and also above the percentage he received of the mail-in ballots from the county that were tabulated on Election Day.

The lead may be short-lived since Santa Barbara County will release its mail-in ballots today. On the other hand, Strickland supporting Los Angeles County is liable to add to Strickland’s total.

Next, will be the fight for the provisional ballots and a possible state mandated audit.

Flap bets Strickland will win this race eventually but hang on because the lead may change a couple more times over the next few weeks.

Tony Strickland and Hannah-Beth Jackson in Tight Race for California State Senate

    strickland-and-jackson

Former California Assembly Members Tony Strickland and Hannah-Beth Jackson and candidates for California State Senate District 19

    Wow!

The election yesterday settled NOTHING (Jackson leads by 108 votes with thousands yet to be counted) in the California State Senate District 19 which includes portions of Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles Counties.

Timm Herdt of the Ventura County Star has the poop and the numbers.

    • Elections officials have processed and counted mail-in ballots that were delivered in the mail through last Friday. All ballots that were delivered via mail on Saturday, Monday and yesterday have not been counted. To these, add all the mail-in ballots that were dropped off at voting precincts yesterday. Finally, add all provisional ballots that were cast. These are the votes that will now determine the outcome.
    • Provisional ballots are cast by voters who showed up at the polls and, for some reason or another, weren’t on the rolls. Ventura County Clerk-Recorder Philip Schmit told me last night that there was an unusually high number of provisional ballots cast yesterday.
    • The tallying of the outstanding ballots won’t begin until tomorrow or Friday at the earliest, Schmit said. The process could take two weeks.
    • California law requires an automatic recount of 10 percent of the ballots in any contest in which the outcome is within half a percentage point. If the contest remains within that margin after the first 10 percent of ballots are recounted, then another 10 percent are recounted, and so on.

Ventura County is where Tony Strickland is strong and many GOP voters vote by mail.

Stay tuned but Flap thinks this race albeit tight today will ultimately go to Republican Tony Strickland.

Tony Strickland Leads in California State Senate Fundraising

    Audra-and-Tony-Strickland

If fundraising is an indicator of success at the polls, former Republican Assemblyman Tony Strickland will win California’s District 19 State Senate race.

The candidates in the 19th Senate District campaign have now raised more than $7 million combined, campaign finance reports filed Thursday show.

In what could be the most expensive legislative campaign in California history, Republican Tony Strickland has taken in $4.3 million, and Democrat Hannah-Beth Jackson has raised $2.7 million.

Thursday’s reports, which cover the period from Oct. 1 to 18, show that each raised nearly $1 million in less than three weeks.

Late contribution reports filed this week show that the two have combined to take in an additional $348,500 since Sunday.

Other reports filed Thursday show that independent expenditure groups have topped the $1 million mark in spending, putting the combined total resources dedicated to this campaign at $8 million and counting.

So, what does this mean for the Strickland campaign?

The 19th state senate district continues to hold a registration edge of Republican registrants over Democrats (albeit a small one). With more campaign dollars, Tony Strickland’s campaign and the the GOP GOTV (Get Out The Vote) operation will be in high gear turning out their base voters.

Remember California has early voting with a huge absentee ballot component. The campaign dollar edge will go along way in the waning days of the campaign to assure their message to undecided voters is delivered by mail, television, radio and telephone.

    Stay tuned……

Can You Trust Hannah-Beth Jackson in Sacramento?

Today’s Editorial at the largest daily newspaper in Santa Barbara County.

Our Opinion: Can you trust Jackson in Sacramento?

     October 15, 2008 8:07 AM

Hannah-Beth Jackson is trying to run away from much of her past. Ms. Jackson was known during her years in the statehouse as so extremely partisan and off-putting that even some fellow Democrats, locally and in Sacramento, wanted her out of politics.

But now, amazingly, Ms. Jackson is trying to portray herself as an independent in her run for the state Senate against Tony Strickland. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Ms. Jackson — who earned the title of Taxin’ Jackson — also is attempting to revise history and suggest she didn’t support one idea after the next to increase your taxes.

Now comes word that Ms. Jackson is trying to rewrite the circumstances regarding her participation in a scheme in 2003 to delay passage of the state budget for political gain.

Think back to that summer when Assemblywoman Hannah-Beth Jackson showed up at the county Board of Supervisors meeting to criticize the GOP’s no-new-tax stand and, in her view, that party’s partisanship at the expense of compromise.

It was just more grandstanding and hypocrisy from Ms. Jackson.

Days later, a broadcasting system in the Capitol building aired budget discussions by a group of 11 Democratic Assembly members that included Ms. Jackson. A staff member interrupted the legislators by saying: “Excuse me, guys, you can be heard outside.”

A report in the San Francisco Chronicle stated: “Members of the Assembly Democrats’ progressive caucus were heard making candid, if not intemperate, statements . . . that they may want to ‘precipitate a crisis’ over the budget this year.” The L.A. Daily News noted that the Democrats “speculated that the continuing deadlock over the state budget could benefit their party politically by slowing the drive to recall Gov. Gray Davis.”

At a recent candidates debate in Ventura, Ms. Jackson tried to distance herself from all this by saying there was no secret meeting, according to reports. The Strickland campaign notes: “Hannah-Beth Jackson thinks that when she says something, it’s true. This time, her denials are more hollow than usual. Taxin’ Jackson must have forgotten the news coverage of the now infamous ‘Squawk Box’ recording. In this meeting, Democrats inadvertently had microphones transmitting their secret plans to hold up the budget and to blame the Republicans in hope of gaining a political advantage.”

On top of these apparent lies or distortions about her past, Ms. Jackson has further damaged her reputation by over-the-top mud-slinging against Mr. Strickland.

Voters must ask themselves: Do you have enough trust and confidence in Ms. Jackson to give her a job in Sacramento?

    ++++++++++

    The answer is NO.

Tony Strickland for California State Senate, District 19.

Tony Strickland Vs Hannah-Beth Jackson – A Fight for the Middle?

    tonys5

Republican California State Senate candidate and former California Assemblyman Tony Strickland waving to early morning commuters in Camraillo, California, August 13, 2008

The Los Angeles Times has a piece up this morning about the Tony Strickland – Hannah-Beth Jackson race. The premise is that both are attempting to attrack moderate voters to win California’s 19th State Senate District.

But as they face off for the 19th state Senate District seat covering much of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties and Santa Clarita in Los Angeles County, both candidates are moving to the center in a bid to win over the crucial block of moderate voters who will probably decide the election.

With no incumbent and voter registration split nearly equally between Republicans and Democrats, big money and attention is pouring into the race. Republicans don’t want to lose the seat held by termed-out Republican Sen. Tom McClintock, and Democrats badly want a win to move the party closer to a two-thirds supermajority needed to pass budget and tax measures, analysts say.

“It’s the hottest race on the Senate side,” said Allan Hoffenblum, editor of the nonpartisan California Target Book. “It’s a centrist district that leans Republican, but it’s anything but a safe seat.”

The 19th district has changed over the past four years with fewer GOP registered voters but the Republicans continue to hold a slight registration edge. This spells an uphill climb for Jackson who is a left-wing partisan from renowned liberal and Democrat dominated Santa Barbara.

Tony Strickland MUST turn out all of his GOP base and a few other voters and he wins. In the closing days of the Presidential race, should McCain precipitously decline in the polls, he must work his GOTV to make sure Republicans vote. However, Proposition 8, the Gay Marriage proposition, will likely motivate many Evangelical, conservative Catholic and Mormon voters to the voting booth. This will help Strickland.

Now, it is all about turnout and how the campaigns work the phones, walk the precincts and get out the vote, including absentee ballots. Whoever has the better political organization wins.

    Hannah-Beth Jackson LYING AGAIN

The latest televison ad from the California Taxpayer Protection Committee

Why is Democrat Hannah-Beth Jackson lying about her record again?

In a high stakes fight for the 19th District state Senate seat, Republican Tony Strickland squared off with Democrat Hannah-Beth Jackson Friday night in a standing-room-only forum at Ventura College.

While sitting side by side before a crowd of about 200 in the college cafeteria, the two started on a congenial note, then traded barbs, responding to questions about the state budget shortfall, education and the environment.

In light of the 85-day state budget impasse this year, both were asked what they would do to repair the process so the budget is passed on time. Both said bipartisan cooperation was important but blamed the other’s party for the lack of cooperation.

Jackson said negotiation was key. Strickland said he was in favor of redistricting reform and then said his opponent was part of a secret meeting that took place that created division among legislators, leading to a late state budget. Jackson said there was no secret meeting.

    NO secret meeting?

Hannah-Beth Jackson is lying – yet again.

After weeks of relentless and personal attacks on Tony Strickland, denying her work to create loop-holes in Proposition 13, and talking about everything but the economy, we’ve decided enough is enough:  It’s time to hold Hannah-Beth Jackson accountable.

When the topic of the state budget came up, The Ventura County Star reported in its October 4th edition, “Strickland said he was in favor of redistricting reform and then said his opponent was part of a secret meeting that took place that created division among legislators, leading to a late state budget. Jackson said there was no secret meeting.”

Hannah-Beth Jackson thinks that when she says something, it’s true.  This time, her denials are more hollow than usual.  Taxin’ Jackson must have forgotten the news coverage of the now infamous “Squawk Box” recording.  In this meeting, Democrats inadvertently had microphones transmitting their secret plans to hold up the budget and to blame the Republicans in hope of gaining a political advantage.

While in the California Assembly, Hannah-Beth Jackson met secretly to hold up the California budget for political gain. Now, she denies the meeting.

    What is the truth?

HEADLINE:  Democrats Discussed Extending Budget Crisis

“In a meeting they thought was private but was actually broadcast around the Capitol on Monday, 11 Assembly Democrats debated prolonging California’s budget crisis to further their political goals.

Members of the Democratic Study Group, a caucus that defines itself as progressive, were unaware that a microphone in Committee Room 127 was on as they discussed slowing progress in an attempt to increase pressure on Republicans to accept tax increases as part of a deal to resolve the state’s $38 billion budget gap.

The conversation was transmitted to roughly 500 “squawk boxes” around Sacramento that political staff, lobbyists and reporters use to listen in on legislative proceedings”

“…Democrats who attended the caucus session included Patti Berg,  Eureka;  Judy Chu, Monterey Park; Mervyn Dymally, Compton; Loni Hancock, Berkeley; Hannah-Beth Jackson, Santa Barbara; John Laird, Santa Cruz; John Longville, Rialto; Alan Lowenthal, Long Beach; and Patricia Wiggins, Santa Rosa.”

“…The liberals in the group have been pushing for billions of dollars in tax hikes to preserve education and health programs, and were discussing whether to vote for the budget approved in the Senate or to keep fighting.”

HEADLINE:  ANALYSIS:  Outgunned GOP makes big rebound

“…A private discussion of 11 Democrats that was inadvertently broadcast last week through the Capitol’s “squawk box” sound system helped Republicans dramatically.”

“…One Democrat, with comments beamed into 500 offices of lawmakers, lobbyists and reporters, suggested deliberately holding up the budget to force Republicans into line. That outraged Republicans — and the public. ”What I’m asked on talk shows and interviews usually comes down now to three things — the budget, the recall and the “squawk box,” Campbell said.”

“No wonder Californians are so fed up.”

Should California taxpayers and voters tolerate a lying politician? A politician who manipulates the California budgetary process for POLITICAL GAIN?

Hannah-Beth, Taxin’ Jackson is WRONG for the California State Senate.
